Any day, any weather, any road conditions. The road could be as dry as a bone. When I drive around a curve (it doesn't matter if I'm driving 45 mph, or 15 mph), the break pedal will engage on it's own, the steering wheel will lock, and a beeping alarm will go off. I have no control of the van. It will put me into oncoming traffic. Everyday. Everyday. Any time I drive this van. Multiple times a day for the last 15 months. Lots of $, and lots of trips to dealer and car repair shops. Can't figure out what is causing the problem, but it's a major problem. We tried new tires, changing wheel sensors, new brakes, adding fluid to steering wheel column, new axels. . . And the list goes on. Nothing fixes the problem. I've read a lot of similar stories on the internet. Lots pf people, same problem, and nothing is fixing the problem on anyone's van. There isn't a solution to a major problem.

On Thursday, September 19, 2013, while turning my steering wheel and attempting to park my 2007 Toyota Yaris I heard a loud crack. I knew something was definitely wrong and quickly realized that a connection between the steering column and the wheel had broken as the steering piece was no longer turning the wheels. In fact, the steering piece just spun around 360 degrees. I left my car in park and called a friend who really knows cars. Upon examining the car, he immediately said that something was seriously wrong with that Toyota part and it never should have broken especially because the part is covered by a protective boot and is not located in the front of the car. If I had been on the highway, I could have died. I brought it to the dealership, but because the part is not yet on the recall list and my car had over 60,000 they told me that I would have to pay nearly $2,000 for the repair. I believe that this is a problem with a Toyota part that should be added to the recall list and I should not have to pay for the replacement of the part.
The contact owns a 2007 Toyota Yaris. Whenever the contact turns the steering wheel to the left or right, she hears a loud grinding sound coming from the steering column. The failure was noticed while driving 15 mph. She took the vehicle to the dealer and they stated that the intermediate shaft failed and was a very common issue with the vehicle. The contact was informed that since the vehicle was out of warranty, she would be responsible for the repairs. The manufacturer was aware of the failure, but stated that there was no recall. The contact believes that the manufacturer should be responsible and that a recall should be issued. The failure mileage was 50,000 and current mileage was 55,000.
