Exterior Lighting Problems of Volkswagen Beetle

The 2015 Volkswagen Beetle was in a minor accident that was rear-ended by another vehicle. No one was injured. The other party claimed responsibility and the vehicle was repaired and the other party paid for the repairs. The problem is with Volkswagen not having the oem safety equipment available to complete the repairs. The specific part is a spoiler attached to the rear trunk lid that increases the visibility of the brake light built into the rear trunk lid. In traffic this vehicle has only two brake lights within the rear fenders lower to the ground. The spoiler attached above the brake light that is attached at the top of the rear trunk lid, sits above the tail lights and the brake light can be seen by the driver in the vehicle behind the vw. Vw claims that this part is on backorder. It is not available within the united states. I believe Volkswagen is refusing to manufacture this critical safety part for repairs of their vehicle. I have been told by several dealers that this part is not available and is on back order. I have tried to locate this part from vw dealers in texas and out of state also. They all tell me the same thing. Its on back order. I understand this vehicle model is out of production but is being reintroduced again in 2025. Volkswagen should be responsible for providing original parts, especially critical safety parts. Hopefully the ntsa can bring this problem to Volkswagens attention and they will make the responsible safety decision and provide a critical safety component of this vehicle to the customers of their company. This car was extremely modified by a company caledl hestermann motorwwerks. The specific problem is the installation of led tail/brake lights. The lights are not compatable with the cars electrical system and as a result they have a problem that is called hyper flashing. That means the turn signal, when engaged, flashes erratically and wehn the brake pedal is applied the light flalso ashes erratically causing the following vehicle to be confused and resulting in an unsafe condition. The contact owns a 2014 Volkswagen Beetle convertible. The contact stated that the front passenger side seat would no longer side backwards. The contact was concern that the front passenger was too close to the air bag system due to the seat malfunction. Also the rear truck door handle had malfunctioned and the rear trunk door could not be opened from outside the vehicle. Also, the rear truck door would not completely shut and the front drivers side light bulb had overheated and experienced charring inside the bulb lens. The cause of the failures were not determined. The failures were not yet repaired. The manufacturer and local dealer were notified of the failures. The failure mileage was 70,000.

Low beams both stopped working, bulbs and fuses are fine.

Headlamps do not stay illuminated regardless of speed. This issue occurs each time the car is used. This is a hazard when driving in low light conditions as others cannot see the vehicle and lack of lighting impairs ones ability to see the road. This issue has not been investigated by a service center. There are no warning indicators that the lights are not functioning. The issue was present when the used vehicle was purchased in 2020.

Fuse that controls reading or map light in cabin and external lighting outside for night driving continually fails (3). Safety issue because rear lights at night only come on when brakes applied.

Takata recall air bag light switch has been recalled on several 03 Beetles but nothing that included the 03 convertable version of this light being activated the car has never been in an accident that I know of and is a cause for concern where none of my airbags will deploy if I ever get into an accident. God forbid. This has been checked by the VIN but does not necessarily mean the part is not defective. Also opposite lights in the rear seem to have some sort of electronic issue new fuses new bulbs and relay seems not to fix this issue. Could possible be part of the same 03 Beetle break switch recall??.

The front lights on both sides go out without warning. I change out the bulbs and they work intermittently. As I was driving over colima road toward whittier, CA on the way home, one light went out and then the other. Colima rd is an unlit road. I don't drive at night. I have spent over 150. 00 on mechanics trying to get it fixed. I read on the internet that many are having the same problem. This item should be investigated, and in my opinion should be recalled by the manufacture.

Break light.

Head light housing on both sides have been replaced twice not to mention how many bulbs have been replaced on both side. Occasionally, if a bulb goes out then all lighting systems fail even if you are driving!.

Sunroof crack after 2 times change, very unsafe condition. When rain front light the get full of water and they stop working, very unsafe driving at night time.

The contact owns a 2006 Volkswagen Beetle. While driving at an unknown rate of speed, the driver side low beam headlamp fractured and detached without notice. The contact took the vehicle to an independent repair shop. The technician replaced the low beam headlamp. The contact later noticed that the low beam headlamp fractured on a roadway. Months later, both low beams fractured and had to be replaced. In addition, the contact mentioned that the low beam lights had been replaced more than twice before the fractures with the part detaching while the vehicle was in motion. The VIN was not available. The manufacturer was notified of the failures. The VIN was unknown. The approximate failure mileage was 30,000.

Car wouldn't excel while driving suddenly 1 mile from town suddenly traffic slowed from snow storm in town,the vehicle smell was funny black smoked slowly leaked inside the car windows up heard a misfire engine light went on blinked then I heard loud blast like I thought it was a plow trucks muffler loudness realized ir was my vehicle stopped immediately less 1/3 mile at bank. Shut off motor m now seeing smoke slowly entered in the middle of the 2 front seatsand console. Feeling hot under belly of floors. Orange glow through electrical outlet in back of console appeared to be hotwith plastic casing in and under floors hot sizzling crackling under center casing/I try to call 911 misused the cell wouldn't operate effectively flagged down a man n woman at the corner light of bank they declined to help so I went to car put snow on compartment and wet it down and aired out smoke with passenger door open . I went in bank for assistance . This vehicle was recalled for safety issues by manufacturer in the past . Were said to be corrected by repairman also said seatbelt harness was a issue heated seats were a issue and airbags tranny also recalled for electrical issues and or transmission and air bags on some 2004 vw vehicle Beetles recalls so far occurred to this vw were airbag sensors/ also the seatbelt harness cases were breaking repeatedly once purchased due to putting the seats up and back to get in the vehicle. Now this mysterious fire and headlamp issue. .

Since I purchased my Beetle in 2001, it has been an ongoing money drain. In 6 yrs. I have replaced the manual transmission twice, had the brakes worked on a number of times, been unable to open the gas "door" on the car w/ the gas cap latch, had to replace the hood opening latch, had repeated electrical failures, problems w/ front & rear light wiring, had door locks/alarm fail & subsequently had my laptop stolen from the car, the radio has not worked for 1+ year, & it's cover panel is loose & falling back into the dash, the rear-view mirror switches have failed, the power window switches have had to be replaced, the drivers side door fell off (!) of its top hinge when the hinge broke while opening the door normally at a gas station, the air compressor has failed many times, the a/c is currently not working, the drivers side door lock fell out of the handle(!!!!), the catalytic converter has been replaced twice, & the list goes on. Currently I have not been driving the car for several wks b/c though only a week or two out of the shop, again it is having transmission problems. I am at my wits end with this car & having recently graduated from college, am not in the greatest position to have to buy a new car. Moreover, I am so displeased w/ the car that I would literally feel guilty about trading it in to be sold to some other unsuspecting person. Vw should be so ashamed of themselves, & should be reimbursing owners of the 1998 Beetle in full for all of the strife & trouble that they have caused. In fact, after writing this & realizing how many problems this car has had, I may try to take legal action - this is totally unacceptable! finally, our local vw dealer is terrible, keeping my car for wks. Longer than expected, one time leaving a candy bar stuck to my passenger side seat!!!, and acting like they could care less about the poor quality of their products & labor.
