The contact owned a 1999 Volkswagen Beetle. The contact stated that there was an abnormal noise while driving in the middle lane of the road. The contact stated that smoke emitted near the left part of the dashboard close to the steering wheel. In addition, due to the extensive nature of the smoke, the contact had to engage the hazard lights and exited the vehicle while in the lane. The fire department extinguished the flames. A police officer was present to direct traffic and a report was filed. The vehicle was towed to a yard. The vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 14e007000 (engine and engine cooling). The VIN was included in NHTSA campaign numbers: 07v063000 (exterior lighting) and 06v183000 (exterior lighting). The manufacturer was notified of the failure months ago and was to provide further testing to determine the failure. The contact kept calling, but received no response from the manufacturer. The vehicle was destroyed. The approximate failure mileage was 125,000.

Car would stall and abruptly stop when operating and all engine and electrical functions and safety features would turn off and not work (e. G. , engine, assisted brakes, air bags, horn, running lights, brake lights, hazard lights, entire dashboard would not work). About 10 minutes later, the car would power up again and run. The problem was intermittent (it happened again) and neither the manufacturer nor dealer could find the cause. The owner refused to drive it anymore unless they found the cause because the abrupt stopping could be catastrophic on the highway. The current position of the manufacturer and dealer is that it never happened. Another case is reported here where the same car abruptly stopped three times and the manufacturer and dealer could not find the cause.

The turn signals and hazard some times work , or they just stop working for days at a time am going to take car in to dealer to find out what the problem is and have it fixed. Now they have failed all together and am afraid I am going to get in to a accident if I don't get them fixed. This has been going on for a year.

Each time I select the turn signal it now blinks a couple times and then stops working. The hazard lights work fine.
