1 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 04/11/2016

Purchased vehicle from used car dealer 5/2014. Within 6 weeks a noticeable odor of gas both in the passenger compartment and outside the car. When standing within 5 feet of it. Regular maintenance was performed but licensed repair shops were unable/unwilling to find a cause. The car was driven approximately 8 miles within the city of tucson, az on public roadways todavis-monthan afb for service again. The technician immediately evacuated my car's driver away from it as he saw fuel had spilled into the trunk space, traveled through the access panel, spilled into the backseat passenger compartment under the back seat, saturated the carpet and floor mats, and had begun reaching beneath the front seats. The fuel was hosed until it could safely be driven off the military base then towed to a vw dealership. Per the dealership's service manager, the fuel pump had cracked and caused several gallons of gas into the car. Neither vw of America or it's authorized dealer are able to give me a detailed description of what had been addressed in 2011, prior to my ownership, regarding the fuel system recall reference NHTSA #10v621000, and vw will not fund the repair of the fuel system. Vw of America reports to NHTSA that no recall repairs remain to be done. All repairs to the fuel system; gasoline delivery hoses, lines/piping, and fittings have been completed on 2006-2010 certain models jetta, new. Beetle, Beetle convertibles, jetta sportwagon, and rabbit vehicles. Without vw providing me a recall repair record and accepting no responsibility to provide me such, I am screwed!! as a single, hard working mother, I can neither afford 1k to fix it or a monthly payment on a car that can't be driven. Vw once again reveals it's reprehensible practice of deceiving american consumers.

2 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2013 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 03/07/2016

First this is my 2nd complaint on this sme vehicle. I also posted last year on this site when this vehicle stalled in middle of freeway going 60 mph. Now this car has trouble starting. Especially after sitting a few days. Was parked at airport parking for 4 days. Sputtered a few minutes before starting but finally started. Drove 30 miles in rain & stopped to get gas. Then the car would not start. All lights came on. Got several warnings like "key not in range" but it was in range. "stability control error" lots of clicking sounds but engine wouldn't start. Have to have towed and take back to delearship. I see lots of service bulletins on this site for this same issue. Not sure if it's the fuel pump, starter, or something else.

3 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2005 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 12/22/2014

While traveling on a level busy freeway at the normal speed limit (55-60 mph), the engine sputters then dies off causing me to immediately put my right turn signal on and try to maneuver my now coasting vehicle 3 lanes (of a 5 lane roadway) over to the right shoulder lane. Luckily the other vehicles noticed that my now slowed vehicle was in trouble so they allowed me to cut in front of them so I could pull over. At freeway speeds this easily could have been a disaster. After got to the side, three attempts to restart worked, got myself home, turned it off, tried to restart and it wouldn't. Got my tow to the repair shop, initial diagnosis indicated that there were no fuel pressure which indicated a possible fuel pump failure. The repair shop ordered a replacement fuel pump and filter ($561. 61), replaced both; also ordered ($27. 88) and replaced a discovered cracked oil dipstick tube. Parts and labor subtotal cost was $919. 49, not including state tax. This complaint is prompted due to the repair shops comment of "normally fuel pumps doesn't fail at 32k miles". The car runs smoothly now, so far so good after driving it 100 miles or so. Reimbursement of my expenses can be justified if this is an item of recall.

4 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2013 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 05/15/2014

Preparing to enter freeway when engine sputtered, "check engine" light came on and engine quit running. Stuck in traffic until fire dept. Came by and helped push to the side of the road. Outside temperature was 101f when this occurred. Had towed to local vw dealership, who informed me the high pressure fuel pump failed causing metal debris to enter the fuel system. They replaced the entire fuel system to include the pump & injectors. They also dumped the fuel that was in the tank. The tank was full of diesel, less 45 miles, when this happened. There has never been gasoline put in this diesel tank.

5 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 01/01/2009

I read the recall announcement in the paper (NHTSA 17v-509, vw 20ae) regarding the fuel pump cut out. I have complained to vw a number of times over the years that my vw engine stops when driving between 55 and 65 mph. The service writers response was that the fuel pump needs to be replaced - a $1000 item. Other mechanics that I've asked have said that if that was the case the engine would not get fuel and not work and that it was probably something else. When I read the symptoms reported in 20ae, they were exactly what I have experienced many times, but not consistently. At 65 mph when the engine cuts out, the deceleration is almost immediate to 50 mph. The symptoms started about 8-10 years ago. I have not driven the car on the freeway since because I was nearly run over by a cement truck. The article I read said that no known crashes or injuries were caused by the problem. Please consider expanding the investigation to include the 2001 new Beetle to see if there were any serious injuries due to this issue. I believe my issue is exactly the same as the issue reported in the press.
