Radio/tape Cd Player Problems of Volkswagen Beetle

Since purchasing more than 7 months ago, vehicle's blind spot monitoring system fails to recognize approaching vehicles and does not have an audible alert inside the vehicle making it nearly unusable and unsafe. Rear-cross traffic alert system goes crazy (incessant beeping) and unexpectedly when vehicle is shifted into reverse. Even if there are no vehicles around and there is nothing surrounding the vehicle the system will go off and beep frantically. Rear-cross traffic alert frequently will not identify or warn of vehicles passing behind, such as when trying to back out of a parking space. Vehicle's in-dash display will periodically go black when vehicle is started. Vehicle's radio system will display random characters for the song or artist, or display the same song and artist for 10 minutes or longer even though the song, artist, or stations have changed. Vehicle has been taken to the dealer multiple times without success. Vw corporate was contacted and responded quickly and with concern, but dealer was still unable to resolve the issues.

The backup camera on the vehicle is so dark to be almost unusable. It is supposed to be a safety device, but you cannot identify what is in your path. It has been back to the dealer for this and they cannot find a fault or a way to adjust the image. They contacted Volkswagen tech support who offered no solution and do not seem to be interested. I have asked to contact Volkswagen directly, but they have no way for the consumer to do that. This car has the "premium 8" radio and no navigation. It appears to be an odd combination as I have not been able to locate one for comparison within a 50 mile radius. Again, this is a safety issue that should be addressed before someone backs over a child or something else.

Since I purchased my Beetle in 2001, it has been an ongoing money drain. In 6 yrs. I have replaced the manual transmission twice, had the brakes worked on a number of times, been unable to open the gas "door" on the car w/ the gas cap latch, had to replace the hood opening latch, had repeated electrical failures, problems w/ front & rear light wiring, had door locks/alarm fail & subsequently had my laptop stolen from the car, the radio has not worked for 1+ year, & it's cover panel is loose & falling back into the dash, the rear-view mirror switches have failed, the power window switches have had to be replaced, the drivers side door fell off (!) of its top hinge when the hinge broke while opening the door normally at a gas station, the air compressor has failed many times, the a/c is currently not working, the drivers side door lock fell out of the handle(!!!!), the catalytic converter has been replaced twice, & the list goes on. Currently I have not been driving the car for several wks b/c though only a week or two out of the shop, again it is having transmission problems. I am at my wits end with this car & having recently graduated from college, am not in the greatest position to have to buy a new car. Moreover, I am so displeased w/ the car that I would literally feel guilty about trading it in to be sold to some other unsuspecting person. Vw should be so ashamed of themselves, & should be reimbursing owners of the 1998 Beetle in full for all of the strife & trouble that they have caused. In fact, after writing this & realizing how many problems this car has had, I may try to take legal action - this is totally unacceptable! finally, our local vw dealer is terrible, keeping my car for wks. Longer than expected, one time leaving a candy bar stuck to my passenger side seat!!!, and acting like they could care less about the poor quality of their products & labor.

Consumer has been having alot of problems with electrical features. Consumer has replaced 2 batteries/ 1 cd changer/ 4 headlight bulbs, and air conditioner outlet didn't work. Dealer stated vehicle had too many miles. Problems existed since day 1.

Driver window not opening/closing automatically, driver door and trunk periodically fails to shut completely, left radio blown, rocker panels have dents due to no fault of driver, continuous deep scratches on exterior body of vehicle.

Vehicle has high oil consumption, radio/cassette failure which resulted in fire, previous incident radiator failure, computer failure, defective control switches and defectice engine.

Radio/cd/cassette unit failed.

Radio failed, volumn controls sticking.

Radio failed. Yh.

Shortly after I bought the vehicle, engine"check light came on and stayed on. Also, cd player was not operating correctly and temperature display (by rear view mirror) did not work. Took in to dealer's svc dept. Many times, but problems persited . Dealer svc. Dept. Claimed everything working fine. Recently, the window on the driver side failed and it would not go up. Took car in to dealer svc. Dept. And got repaired. Shortly after that, car died. It was not the battery, so car was towed to dealer service dept. On 8-14-02. Dealer examined car and said it was the tri-lock system and didn't know how to fix it. Tri-lock system removed by dealer but car still not working. Problem: power windows did not work, push window button and trunk would pop open, air bag light stayed on, etc. Etc. Etc. The car has been at dealeship for over a week and dealer keeps telling me it's fixed, but when I go pick it up (3 times), the car is still doing the same thing, and the air bag light is still on all the time. Very frustrated and disappointed.
