I've owned this car for nearly two years. On April 3, 2025, I took my car to niello vw. A service person told me he'd just had a vw Beetle with the same problem, just the passenger's side. Since there was nothing jamming the glide rails, there was no reason for the seat to be stuck. I took the car to a car upholstery shop because they specialize in removing car seats. The person had a hard time removing my seat, but he did. He said one of metal teeth like glides or steel buttons was broke. There are three on each side of the car seat. It was only on the right side of the driver's seat. The driver's seat is stuck and unable to be adjusted to the driver's leg length. There was nothing jammed in the lock that caused this to be stuck. I have owned 4 vw Beetles and I've never had a problem like this. It's very expensive about $1000 to repair. Mine is 2018 vw Beetle. I should not have a problem like this. I am reporting this because other vw Beetle owners have had to same problem. I did have the air bags repaired a recall.

I was driving with my child sitting in the passenger seat and we had the heated seats turned on the setting of 2. After a few minutes she yelled out “my butt is on fire!” she sat up off the seat to reveal a large black charred burnt hole in the leather seat!.

Passengers side headlight shorting out for 7th bulb replacement and new electrical problems. Strange, all within 6 months. My 21 yr old nursing student of ecu university has had the exact same issue while on her 4 hour trip home 7 times now. The wiring continues to fry itself in the main fuse box , now affecting theabs braking system. I paid $9k in cash and have electrical receipts, seat belt, convertible top, blower door, front end replacement, radiator, water pump, trunk latch, hydro licks on convertible, timing belt, 4 batteries, air bags! I could continue with a longer list. I added up to $17,000. 00 I have in this piece of crap that continues to break monthly . I would be ecstatic to provide all receipts. Isn't problems of this great nature unreasonable for a car with 70,000 miles also considered a lemon? all incidents have left my daughter stranded on interstate 85 where she has feared her life fight off the homeless psychotic people. It has left me unable to buy her a new car with no savings due to fixing something new each month. And 27 degrees outside with no ability to start it. The seat levers back and forth have had to be bolted in one position to prevent seat belt electrical too short electrical cord so the faulty airbags may by chance deploy if she ever got into an accident. Latest is. She needs another water pump and timing belt from just being done 2 years ago!! something major defects with this car. I fear for her life! last trip home a car did not see her pulled over on interstate and side swiped her bumper. Water pump again. See photo of it leaking more when we had it towed home in garage. Also rear bumper of inciden.

The interior smells strongly of crayons and will not go away with shampooing, cleaning and/or other methods of odor removal. The odor is very strong and rubs off on clothing and skin whilst seated.

The front passenger seat caught fire while I was driving. It started smoking then a flame came from the top of the seat. I put the fire out with my bottled water.
First the button to roll up the passenger window broke, then the button to lock the passenger door broke, then the seat fell apart for not reason and would not clip down, then the plasitc panels inside the door crack and are falling off.

The airbag sensor light came on while driving at 65mph. I took to the dealership where I purchased and they sent the car over to the vw dealership. Vw dealership contacted me and said that the driver side seatbelt, airbag igniter was defective and needed a driver side airbag unit to the tune of 881. 79. I have an extended warranty however nothing related to the airbag or safety is covered. Since this is a safety concern I wonder why vw doesn't stand by their products and warranty.
Two small bolts that hold down the front of the drivers seat became loose and over time they eventually broke completely free allowing the seat to roll and tip backward and sideways. This was a complete shock when it occured, I had noticed the seat becoming loose but then to have it break free was a scare. Thankfully there was not a crash and injury as a result. It appears that I am not the only one this has happened to so it is surprising that that cars are not recalled to have thread locker or different bolts installed.

Drivers seat will not stay latched to the floor of the car, and seat bounces as I drive. Was repaired at dealership in Dec 2007, broke again in June 2008. Dealership refuses to accept responsibility. Suggests replacing the seat frame for $700. Normal use of a drivers seat should not cause this type of an issue.
The contact owns a 2003 Volkswagen Beetle. The welding has failed on the driver's seat track. As a result, the seat moves back and forth and, in the event of a crash, the seat would detach from the vehicle. The dealer stated that they were aware of the failure, but were not obligated to make the repair. The failure mileage was 38,000 and current mileage was 39,000. Updated 01-11-08. Updated 12/12/07.
The contact owns a 1999 Volkswagen Beetle. While driving, the driver's seat moved by itself and prevented the contact from reaching the accelerator pedal. The driver observed that the seat had completely separated from the vehicle. Aaa stated that the plastic failed in the seat and that the screws were detached. Aaa replaced the screws in the seat so that the contact could drive home. The dealer repaired the seat and confirmed that the screws and the plastic failed. The second time the seat failed, the dealer would not repair or inspect it to determine the cause of failure. The dealer also stated that her vehicle was no longer under warranty. The manufacturer has been notified. The speed and powertrain were unknown. The current mileage was 52,000 and failure mileage was 50,000. Updated 12/12/2007
the consumer stated the dealer called and informed her the cost of the repair would $178. 00, however the consumer is on a fix income and can not afford the cost of the repair. Updated 12/12/07.

The consumer has had to replace the transmission, bearings, axle, cooling system, seat tracks and bolts and window track in her 2001 Volkswagen new Beetle. The consumer also needed to replace the catalytic converter and the front axle.
With normal use of the seats in the vehicle, the 2 bolts that hold the rail to the seat of the floor of the vehicle came loose and the seat slid around recklessly. It almost caused numerous accidents because it would come loose while driving the vehicle. We finally had to use lock tight on the bolts to hold them in place because even after tightening it back it place it would still come loose.
I was driving my 98 bug when the entire seat fell off the track, and I fell in the backseat, the car stalled while on a 45 mph road I was not injured. Keffer volk recured the seat but say I will cost $1000 for a new floor track. Volks says this isn't a warranty issue. It would be nice to have a seat to drive the car. My concern is how many other cars/volks have done this and I cannot believe their lack of concern. Had I been injured or worse killed there would be a huge lawsuit at this time. I do not weigh 300 pounds nor am I abusing to my vehicles. I do believe a motor car industry should be able to build a car that keeps the seat in place. I rarely have even moved the seat back and forth on the track. I am the second owner and the car has never been involved in a wreck. We are getting rid of the car very soon. I have lost my confidence in volks. This was my second car with them. Thank you. Previous firefighter and er nurse and safety previontion officer with the fire depart.

Consumer was driving , approaching a stop light, and applying brakes and seat came loose. Driver was forced into steering wheel, and then went all way back, not allowing driver to reach the pedals. Only component that held the seat to vehicle was a wheel mounted in a track. There were 2 screws (3/4") that had come loose which caused this defect. Please provide any additional information/attachments.
Consumer states the drivers seat slides foward each time the vehicle stops, the dealer was notified and they still have not fixed the problem.
Was starting to apply brakes when seat went backwards, and driver lost visibile contact with road. Later, had seat checked out, and noticed screws on track of seat had become stripped. This what caused seat problem.
Driver's seat is loose from floorboard. There's alot of movement when driving and braking. Seat was repaired by an independent repair shop. Consumer will attach additional information. Seat bolts failed.
On 2 occasions when my car has been facing down on a slope it will not start and I have to put it in neutral and roll to level ground to get it to start. On one other occation my car did have a problem when I pulled into my parents driveway and I put my car in reverse , it did not go into gear and I rolled over my mom's flowers. The deal has checked in their database and with Volkswagen of America and noone has reported a problem similar to mine. They tried to recreate what I described, but to no avail. To date I have not had any incident repeat and I have gone to my parents house to try to recreate it myself, but again to no avail. The dealer has been very helpful with any problem I have encounted with my new car.
Passenger chair adjusting knob came off. Yh.
The drivers seat completely detached itself causing consumers daughter to fall backward. Consumer re-attached the bolts and the defect occured again. Consumer re-attached the bolts a second time this time adding a lock washer to the bolt and some locktite on the threads. Consumer would like this issue to be looked into.
