1 Ignition Coils Failure problem of the 2012 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 07/21/2014

Engine started shaking / running rough. Significant power loss during acceleration / takeoff. I was not far from the dealer when it happened - I drove it in right away and the diagnosis was bad ignition coil. Since then, over the next 6 months, I replaced (on my own) the remaining 3 ignition coils as the originals would fail. It costs ~$18 to buy a new ignition coil (versus $50 from the dealer). However, I was driving with spare coils in the trunk.

2 Ignition Coils Failure problem of the 2010 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 12/22/2012

We purchased and we were servicing our vw Gti 2010 at autobarn mt. Prospect/IL. In the last 2 years we replaced all ignition coils at different time intervals and twice for cylinder #2. There are actually multiple issues here. First, this kind of problem can easily generate an accident, if one ignition coil fails at the wrong time and the wrong place (when passing or driving on a mountain road). Second, the ignition coils are poorly designed and they go bad way too fast making the car undriveable. Costly towing was required almost every time. Third, the vw dealership should advise customers to replace all coils in the same time at the first sign of trouble. Instead they choose to replace them one by one, charging between $180. 00 and $220. 00 every time just for labor, when the part itself costs just $32. 00 and the level of difficulty for this task is very low.

3 Ignition Coils Failure problem of the 2006 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 05/01/2010

Car information: 2006 Volkswagen Gti 2. 0t, 59,279 miles. Incident: went to start car after eating in a restaurant, ignition coil exploded. Melted the wiring harness, valve cover and damaged other electrical components. This could have resulted in a serious car fire and endangered people's lives. There is currently a recall on these ignition coils for emissions problems, but I think there needs to be more investigating done. Volkswagen is covering parts and labor to fix issues resulting from explosion, but will not provide rental car or other transportation while car is being worked on. I am worried about future electrical issues as a result from this.

6 Ignition Coils Failure problem of the 2002 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 02/23/2006

Check engine light came on, car lost power. I figured it was an engine coil, because this has happened to me before, last time it was covered under warranty, #6 coil. Since I was 30 miles away from dealer, I took my 2002 Gti to a local mechanic, who diagnosed the problem as the # 5 ignition coil. I called the dealership to find out if there was a recall or extended warranty on this part since this was the second one to fail. Dealer said "no recall and the charge would be about $200. 00 since the vehicle is no longer under warranty. Vehicle has 50,850 miles at this time. Since it wasn't covered, I had it fixed locally. Gti has the 24 valve vr 6 engine.

7 Ignition Coils Failure problem of the 2001 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 10/04/2005

On October 4, 2005 the check engine light activated on my 2001 vw Gti, upon bringing it to my repair shop - they notified me that my ignition coil was defective and needed replacement, this repair cost me nearly $1,000. Upon learning that the ignition coil on 2001 vw's was defective and reading a press release from vw that stated in part all 2001 vw cars including Gti's equipped with 2. 8 liter vr6 would be replaced at no cost" and all customers will be notified that this part doesn't meet our high standards and will be replaced, I contacted vw and requested reimbursement for my repair. They notified me that, contrary to the info contained in their press release, my car wasn't eligible for this repair. It appears that this is the part referenced in service bulletin 0401 and 0402, 10007016 and 10007205 on this website. It appears that vw isn't living up to their commitment, they neither notified me initially or agreed to reimbursement or other remedy when I contacted them today.

17 Ignition Coils Failure problem of the 2001 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 01/05/2003

Ignition coilpack failures in four cylinder 1. 8 turbo engines. Model year 01+, engine code aww. Vw is well aware of this epidemic condition and is not issuing a recall, nor have they communicated anything to their coustomers. Vw has new redesigned parts but are in short supply so vw is only replacing parts in cars that have failed, and then only to the coilpack that has failed not in all four. This is unnaceptable. They are basically waiting for everyone that ones a car with that engine to break down on the road and then only replace 1 of the 4 coilpacks with the new design. So after 3 more breakdowns and endless days waiting for parts will your car be "trustworthy" again.
