One of the hid headlamp stopped working causing the bulb fail warning light on the dash to be illuminated. I went to the auto parts store and bought a new bulb. Upon removal of the bulb access cover I found that all the insulation on allof the wiring in the headlight unit to have disintegrated causing the bare wires to touch and short out. I then inspected the other side of the vehicle and found the exact same condition. Upon contacting the dealer I was told that as the car was out of warranty I would have to purchase two new headlamp units at a cost of $500 per unit. I then contacted vwofa ( customer care ref #190304452) only to be told that again being out of warranty it was my responsibility to incur the repair costs. As the vehicle only has 60k and this is not only a safety issue but potentially hazardous and a manufacturing defect please investigate.

The contact owns a 2007 Volkswagen Gti. When a passenger is seated in the front passenger seat, the air bag sensor light constantly illuminates and displays "passenger side air bag is off". The dealer stated that the wiring harness needed to be replaced. The replacement was made, but the failure persisted. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer and the seat tensioner was replaced. The failure persisted as well. While driving less than 60 mph, the check engine light illuminated on the instrument panel. The weather stripping on the passenger side was replaced three times, in addition to the sunroof once. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer for repairs. The failure mileage was 10,000 and current mileage was 41,000.

I noticed that my speedometer was not properly functioning so I went to the vw dealership and they told me that I had a coolant leak and coolant migration. The coolant apparently migrated through the wiring harness to short my instrument cluster. The entire wire harness and part of my instrument cluster is now inoperable due to the migration. I was quoted a $3,800 estimate and my car only has 68,000 miles. I performed online research and several 1999 vw's had the same problem due to a design defect that dripped coolant over the wire harness. There is even a technical service bulletin filed with the NHTSA that instructs vw how to replace to massive problem. I contacted vw and they will not help even thought this is a widely reported problem with 1999-2001 vws and a design defect. Now I need to replace the wire harness, which apparently runs through most of the engine and car components and my instrument cluster- a $3,800 repair. Rather than correct their design defect, vw offered me $1,00 offer a new vw, which is totally unacceptable. Updated 12/12/07.

Left work after sunset. On my way home my headlights stopped working. I then noticed that my turn signals, wipers, and defroster stopped working as well. Luckily I am a mechanic so I was able to find the problem as soon as I got home. That was after driving 5 miles with no lights at all on the exterior of the car. The problem was the ignition switch. When I took everything apart I noticed that the wire and connector was melted. I replaced the ignition switch, melted wire, and connector. I have the old part and the receipt. My only concern is that my car could have caught fire.

I bought a Volkswagen Gti 1. 8t in 2001. It had numerous failures on me. Ignition coil failure, window collapsed sudently, shift is stuck in parking, catalyst converter failure, rear brake pads worned out very fast while the front pad was like new. I am extremely disappointed in Volkswagen. Their customer service was horrible. Allltheir responses were this is not under the warranty, it's normal wear and tear etc.
