Other Fuel System Pump Problems of Volkswagen GTI

Volkswagen GTI owners have reported 16 problems related to other fuel system pump (under the other fuel system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2012 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 08/14/2020

A month ago I noticed my Gti was stalling when I tried to accelerate after a stop. Went on a drive with a lot of hill climbing and the car starting to stall on the uphill portions. The problem was noticeably worse after that, so I took it to a local shop. They weren't entirely sure but put in a new fuel filter. The problem did not get better. Today, a month later, I took my car to a different shop for further diagnosis and they determined it was a high pressure fuel pump/camshaft failure. The car is not performing safely due to stalling and a lag in acceleration.

2 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2010 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 12/23/2019

I was driving on the freeway mesa,az at the rate of speed 72 mph and the car just shut off, I put it in neutral and coasted through traffic, I was able to get it from the fast lane to shoulder, my heart was racing, I put the car in park try to start it didn't start for a few minutes, drove home few miles away. With no problems. Next morning wouldn't start. With 59,500 miles I was stocked. Had the code's read coils, spark plugs, so I changed them. Still didn't start. 3 day later, (she's garage kept) and started up. Well in the last 6 month's it has done the same thing 9 times on the freeway, 4 times in the city. Took it to vw dealership they read code's p0087 witch is low pressure fuel pump, fuel pump control module, fuel filter. So buying all new parts, I got fuel pump control module & fuel filter at vw dealership, fuel pump over the internet all new parts. The vw parts manager told me that vw has had problems with control module on other models, I think he said that they were recalled on jetta's, golf's and vw has updated the fuel pump control module on my 2010 vw Gti 2. 0 turbo 3or4 times. I asked how do I know if I'm buying updated version or not, he pointed out the different part numbers and said your good to go. I youtube video of r & r fuel pump, fuel pump control module, and fuel filter. My car ran great for 20. 5 miles, starting it up two days later at home, I'm letting it warm up the motor for a few minutes and just quit again wouldn't start up. Then I find out there's a updated & upgraded fuel pump control module that's has 32 amps. Going to the fuel pump, wires, device, clips for $699. 00 after I spent $500. 00 on the parts installed. My point is that someone who is not Smart enough, strong enough, and road conditions vary may not get to the side of the road with no power steering, power brakes, everything on a car quits. Hope nobody gets hurt/ killed.

3 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2012 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 09/27/2017

Water pump failed on 3 separate occasions. Had the fuel pump fail, air intake, excess carbon build up on valves, and now total engine failure. The rocker arm for number 3 cylinder broke in half causing total engine failure. Vehicle was in motion during all of the events. Vw won't assist in repairs even though the 2. 0 tsi engine has a well documented history of engine failure when the timing chain tensioner fails. They won't fix it unless it is under warranty. If you have this model of engine get it checked before you are out an engine.

4 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2008 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 06/12/2017

Car loss power had to be towed to voltswagon later the high pressure fuel pump was found to have failed causing a lost of power while on the on ramp to the highway. There was also damage done to the motor from the internal metal fragments from where the pump works with the cam shaft and the metal fell into the motor. Had to have a new engine replace ment mileage 135000.

5 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2015 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 07/05/2016

Would like to know why we were never informed of the 3 recalls on our 2015 vw Gti. Started investigating after our 2015 vw passat has the bad airbags in them. Also own the Gti and we investigated to see if the bad airbags are in there too. That is when we found problems with the fuel pump which was recalled in June 2015, we were never notified, also a fuel leak of an ignition source. . . Never notified and a loose stabilizer link in the steering. Who wants to drive this car. Why were we not notified of these three recalls. We never moved, I want an answer as this car is always in use. We were really upset with the passat that we got rid of it and thank god we had gotten rid of our other new passat last year only to buy another lemon and unsafe vehicle from vw. . . . . . This being the Gti. Please get back to us. If anything happens life threatening, you will be held responsible. You are ignoring your customers who at one time loved their vehicles. . . . Now they are afraid to drive them. . . . But still must pay for them. Maybe we need a car replacement from vw for this Gti for not letting us know. Not even sure if this Gti has the bad airbags as your 800 number keeps me on the line on hold for over an hour I just think you don't want to answer.

9 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2012 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 01/29/2015

Within seconds of starting, the engine stalls (making a sputtering sound) and dies. This seems to happen on warm starts, not hot, not cold. I'm typically able to move the car (only a few feet) before the stall out occurs. The temperature gage seems to be around the 11 o' clock mark when this occurs. Specifically, it's happened after driving the car for 20-40 minutes, then letting the car sit for 1-2 hours. The car starts up again and runs anywhere from 30 minutes to 1 hour after the incident - closer to the 30 minute mark, pressing the accelerator seems to help the car from stalling. It is difficult to duplicate this behavior, there are no warning lights indicating what the issue may be, and it seems that there is either no fault code generated by the electrical system or it is being erased periodically. This has made it difficult to have the issue diagnosed and repaired by dealer service centers. This is very dangerous, considering it may cause the car to stop in traffic leading to an increased risk of crash. This is not an isolated report, there are other complaints on this site and on several vw forums posted online (these accounts include several videos that confirm this is a consistently experienced problem). Potential issues commonly identified include the fuel pump, fuel filter, or the fuel pump control module. Another vw vehicle - vw tiguan, model year 2007-2014, has been recalled for a similar issue attributed to the electronic control module (ecm) of the vehicle.

10 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2008 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 11/17/2014

Vehicle required extra cranking before starting. Upon starting and beginning to drive, there was lack of power and rpms did not want to go above 4k. After approx. 1/4-1/2 mile engine began to respond normally. Took vehicle to dealership for diagnosis. Told the high pressure fuel pump, cam follower and cam needed to be replaced due to cam follower losing hardness and wearing through causing fuel pump to run directly on cam. Fuel pump arm was worn and also scored cam. Was told that 2006-07 model years had extended warranty from vw to fix this but 2008 did not. In model year 2009, a completely different system was used. I believe that my engine still contained the defective parts and vw internet forums also have extensive mention of this problem in 2008 models. I also on many occasions have taken vehicle to dealership for routine maintenance and was never informed that I should have the cam follower inspected for wear. This is a $60. 00 part that could be replaced before it wears through. Instead, I have a quote from the dealer to replace not only the cam follower, but also the high pressure fuel pump and the cam for slightly over $2,000. 00. I took the vehicle to an independent repair shop and was told that because there are also metal shavings in the cam housing that I should also replace this along with some other misc. Parts. The housing part alone is approx. $1,600. 00. I am replacing the fuel pump and cam follower and will be checking the parts for wear every 10-20k miles. Reported this issue to vw customer care and was told that my VIN did not fall into the range for the extended warranty so there was nothing they could do. I did receive a "coupon" for $500 off a new vehicle purchase but not sure I would buy another vw after this experience.

11 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2008 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 10/23/2014

Tl-the contact owns a 2008 Volkswagen Gti. The contact stated that the vehicle had to be placed in the accessory mode approximately 1 minute before starting the ignition. The contact also stated that while driving approximately 50 mph the vehicle started to make a jerking motion while attempting to accelerate. The failure had recurred numerous times intermittently. The vehicle had been taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing and the cam, high pressured fuel pump and the evap purge valve needed to be replaced. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer had been notified of the failure however, the VIN was not included in the manufacturers extended cam follower warranty. The approximate failure mileage was 99,800. Sw.

12 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2011 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 10/04/2014

Engine will stall and die within 5-20 seconds after starting. Happens on a warm engine after it sits for 45-60 minutes. Happened multiple times, each after engine has reached operating temperature. This is potentially a deadly problem if the car dies on a street, as it won't steer or have propulsion! had it seen at vw dealer: they suspect it is the "in-tank fuel pump" but this part is not covered under drivetrain warranty? I called vw customer service but they said they can't help on this $834 repair. I'm perplexed how a fuel pump goes bad on a 2011 with only 45k miles, and that a vital component that will make the car stall & die is not covered under drivetrain warranty. This is a potentially deadly problem if it dies suddenly and cars following cannot swerve around. Very disappointed. This will be my last vw, ever. If you own a vw with 2. 0 tsi you should look into this.

13 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2013 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 01/02/2014

My 2013 vw Gti has an ongoing issue-condition with what appears to be a fuel pump and/or low fuel pressure. It usually occurs randomly, without any hint. After the start up the car stalls within a few seconds. At that point the car would die at every attempt to start up again. However, the car will come back to life after staying idle for 40-60minutes (in severe cases even longer). In addition, we had several incidents when the car would stall while in slow motion on a hill. The gas tank in all instances was full or near full. We have had numerous major and minor incidents that have started since approximately 7,000 miles. We had somehow tolerated such randomly occurring incidents until the issue became (suddenly) almost a daily norm in December 2014 and January 2015. The car was repaired by the vw dealership at least 2 times within 2 week period. The issue still occurs these days, yet with lesser frequency. The issue is causing serious health and safety concerns on top of the major inconvenience and additional out-of-pocket expenses.

14 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2008 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 09/12/2013

Shortly after purchasing my 08 Gti with the fsi motor, I was searching the internet for common issues to watch out for. The cam follower which sits between the camshaft and high pressure fuel pump was seen multiple times online as an issue due to wearing through allowing the cam shaft to interact with the pump. I asked a vw dealership about the problem and they told me that earlier models were covered under warranty, but 2008 was not due to the problem being fixed by the factory for this year. I decided to check anyway and found that the follower was completely worn through allowing the cam shaft to interact with the pump. This was at 56k miles. When I returned to discuss this with the dealership they said that there was nothing they could do. This shows that the problem wasn't solved, and while earlier models are covered for their damage if something goes wrong due to metal shavings in my engine, or other issues I'll be forced to pay out of pocket. I am now replacing the follower myself every 15k just to be sure, but the fact that one year isn't covered is not right. Since the issue persists they should cover it.

15 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2013 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 08/17/2013

Took car for first drive. After traveling 145 miles into this trip when trouble started. Ambient temp was 101f. Drive time was just over 2. 5 hours. Gas tank was slightly over half empty. Car stalled taking off from stop. Engine running but car would not accelerate. Engine then stopped. Cranked over (started) and went about 2 blocks. Car stalled again. This time it was difficult to get started again. Had to crank it 3-4 times. Started then stalled. Engine malfunction light came on. Eventually started. While driving on highway at 55mph engine turned off without warning. I pointed car to the shoulder and braked to a stop. Two more stop light incidents where car stalled and quit running at and in intersections. Pulled over and called dealer. Talked to service consultant. Discussed options. Engine malfunction light on all the time. Even though roadside assistance was offered, service consultant stated that since the engine light was steady amber it should be ok to drive if I was comfortable doing it. I determined my best option was to drive it back to tucson. Waiting for roadside assistance on hwy 191 between safford and willcox in 100f+ sunshine would have been unacceptable, if not more dangerous than driving the car - because of the remote location and the extreme heat. Made it back to tucson. Drove straight to service and dropped the car off. Total mileage on car 353 miles. Note that I had not added any gas to the vehicle, and was still using the gas provided by dealer upon delivery. (I mention this because a tech asked if diesel fuel was put in the tank instead of gas. No!) dealer service confirmed fuel pump not working properly and replicated problem. Noted fuel pump extremely hot and discovered associated electrical damage to fuel control module with strong potential for fire. In my opinion, this is a critical safety problem and should be investigated.

16 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 12/01/2010

The contact owns a 2009 Volkswagen Gti. The contact stated while traveling 65 mph, the vehicle suddenly stalled. The contact was able to merge to the side of the road to restart the vehicle where it began to function normally. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was confirmed that the fuel pump had failed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted about the issue. The failure mileage was 89,000 and the current mileage was 190,000.
