1 Other Fuel System problem of the 2016 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 02/06/2026

Nhtsa recall 24v-110 (vw 20uf). The vehicle is in limp mode and experiencing low oil pressure symptoms. It is also subject to recall 24v-110, which identifies a fire risk due to fuel leakage. Despite the safety hazard, the local Volkswagen dealership has refused to perform the recall repair or diagnose the vehicle, stating it is at their 'discretion. ' I am reporting a failure by the manufacturer and the dealer to remedy an active safety defect, leaving me with an unsafe, undriveable vehicle. ".

2 Other Fuel System problem of the 2017 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 02/05/2026

Had an immediate loss of propulsion event without warning (2-Feb-2026) after recall work completed on 16-Dec-20256 (24v110000). I lost propulsion on public roads and was lucky that this happened just after I exited the highway otherwise I would have ended up in a life threatening situation.

3 Other Fuel System problem of the 2016 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 12/29/2025

I am reporting a safety concern related to safety recall 20uf on my 2016 Volkswagen golf Gti se and the handling of this recall by an authorized Volkswagen dealership (pohanka Volkswagen, capitol heights, MD). Prior to the recall service, the vehicle exhibited loss of power, intermittent shuddering, and severe difficulty refueling (fuel pump nozzle repeatedly shut off even with a low fuel level). These symptoms were similar to prior evap system failures that required replacement of the charcoal canister and evap purge (n80) valve earlier in 2025. I brought the vehicle to the dealership on December 29, 2025, specifically requesting completion of recall 20uf and inspection/replacement of evap components if necessary. The dealership initially refused to perform the recall unless I returned the vehicle with less than one-quarter tank of fuel, despite the recall documentation specifying that fuel extraction equipment (vas5190a or equivalent) is required for this repair. A diagnostic report generated by the dealership listed a “fuel pump (in tank)” replacement as a customer-pay repair before later removing it once it was identified as recall-related. After significant delays, the dealership stated the recall had been completed and declined to replace any evap components. Since the recall service, the vehicle continues to experience intermittent shuddering and difficulty accelerating. While refueling has temporarily improved, drivability concerns persist, raising questions about whether the recall repair was properly performed and whether the vehicle remains safe to operate. I am concerned about inconsistent handling of a safety recall, improper diagnostic practices, and continued fuel-system-related drivability issues that may pose a safety risk.

4 Other Fuel System problem of the 2017 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 10/13/2025

On October 13, 2025, while driving my 2017 Volkswagen Gti, I noticed a strong odor of gasoline inside and around the vehicle. After parking and inspecting the car, I observed a large pool of gasoline forming in front of the rear passenger-side wheel well. This poses a serious safety risk due to the potential for fire or explosion from fuel leakage. This is the second time my vehicle has experienced gasoline leaking from this same area. The issue appears to originate from a component in or near the fuel system (potentially the fuel line, rollover valve, or suction jet pump assembly), but the specific part has not yet been confirmed. The vehicle is currently at honolulu Volkswagen for inspection, and the affected components are available for review upon request. At this time, no warning lights, dashboard messages, or prior symptoms appeared before the leak occurred. The odor of gasoline was the first sign of the issue. I believe this recurring fuel leak presents a significant fire hazard and warrants further investigation by Volkswagen and NHTSA.

5 Other Fuel System problem of the 2017 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 10/08/2025

Description of the problem: the fuel pump failed and began spraying gasoline during operation. The malfunction was documented on video by an authorized Volkswagen mechanic and confirmed by a Volkswagen dealership in honolulu, hawaii. The component is available for inspection if required. Safety risk: the failure caused pressurized gasoline to spray within the engine compartment, presenting a serious fire and explosion hazard. This defect posed a danger to the driver, passengers, and others nearby due to potential ignition of leaked fuel. Reproduction and inspection: the condition was reproduced and confirmed by both an independent authorized Volkswagen mechanic and a Volkswagen dealership in honolulu. The issue has not yet been inspected by Volkswagen of America, insurance representatives, or police authorities. Warning signs or prior symptoms: a strong smell of gasoline inside the passenger cabin was present prior to discovery of the leak. No dashboard warning lights or error messages appeared. Summary: fuel pump failure caused gasoline to spray under pressure. The problem was verified by an authorized vw mechanic and dealership in honolulu, hi. The defective component remains available for inspection. Immediate safety risk due to potential ignition of fuel vapors.

6 Other Fuel System problem of the 2015 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 09/17/2025

Recall service was performed on the fuel system. The vehicle was operating normally before the recall. Shortly after the recall service, the fuel gauge failed and became stuck at mid-level. Dealer refuses to cover the repair and claims it is unrelated, but the timing and failure of another fuel system component suggests otherwise. This presents a safety issue because the driver cannot determine fuel level or range and may impact other recalled vehicles and should be included in the repair of the fuel system. The recall that was performed on the vehicle was "safety recall 20uf - suction jet pump". I believe the timing of the failure suggests that the recall work impacted the vehicle fuel system and I don't believe it's fair for customers following safety recalls to be punished and required to pay for further damages caused from a recall on the vehicle.

7 Other Fuel System problem of the 2017 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 08/09/2025

I had fuel leaking from my carbon canister. I was driving the previous day and noticed a gasoline smell. I thought it was something I ran over. The next day, while performing errands, I noticed the smell even more. Then I exited the vehicle to see the fuel pouring out of the car. The dealership has it now.

8 Other Fuel System problem of the 2016 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 08/01/2025

Fuel is leaking from near the gas tank when the car is running and creates a puddle- I took my car to the local vw dealership in February to get the suction jet pump recall completed.

9 Other Fuel System problem of the 2015 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 02/22/2025

I purchased a vehicle from a dealer and there was an open recall for said vehicle. I was looking on the NHTSA. Gov website and discovered a document mentioning that it is illegal for a dealership to sell a vehicle with an open & not fixed recall, prior to selling said vehicle. I am not entirely sure what this means for me and my vehicle but, I wanted to submit a claim just in case. Please contact me back if you require more information. I have scheduled a service at a certified Volkswagen dealership in my area to repair the suction jet pump recall for next Thursday (March 6) but, am afraid to drive the car until then as I started experiencing issues 2 days after the purchase of my Gti. Thank you.

10 Other Fuel System problem of the 2017 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 12/22/2024

Earlier in 2024, Volkswagen of America issued a recall for the suction jet pump, on the 14th of December I went to vw of pompano beach in florida, to get the recall done, however, after they delivered back the car, it started to leak fuel after I put gas on it. On December 17th I took it again to the dealer to get it fixed and they gave me back the vehicle on December 19th. On December 22nd I put gas on the vehicle and it started to leak fuel again and this time it was way worse than before. I accuse the dealer of being responsable of performing a bad job on the recall as the vehicle had never leaked fuel before I had the recall done. I have the vehicle since febraury 2024. It worries me that there is a big possibility that the car can catch on fire if by any reason there is a spark near to me or there is any thing that can trigger the fuel to ignite.

11 Other Fuel System problem of the 2023 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 11/09/2024

I have a 2023 vw Gti with a manual transmission. It has a feature called "hill hold assist", where it enables the parking brake when you are uphill and at a stop, at a red traffic light, for example. The issue is the feature does not disengage the parking brake for about 3 seconds after you engage the gas to begin moving the car. It basically holds the car for too long when you are trying to get moving. This feature has become more of a hinderance and safety concern, than an assistance: 1) almost rear ended by another car as the hill hold assist would not disengage at a traffic light 2) the amount of gas and clutch use while the car is being held in place while engaged negatively impacts the longevity of the clutch 3) in the case of an emergency, I am unable to move the vehicle when I need to - this is most concerning. This function would not be an issue if there was a way to disable "hill hold assist", or reduce the time it takes to disengage, but unfortunately Volkswagen did not include a way to disable or adjust this feature in the vehicle's software. I previously had a 2018 Gti, manual transmission, with the same feature. It was far less aggressive, and it could be disabled if needed. Please consider this a safety concern and address with Volkswagen of north America, as I have made several calls to vw with no resolution. Many other vw Gti drivers have concerns about this feature as well. Thanks, [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

12 Other Fuel System problem of the 2015 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 08/01/2024

On 8/1/2024 my housemate was driving this vehicle on the highway and another driver signaled to her that there was an issue with the vehicle. He put a white board outside of the drivers side window which said "gas is pouring out of the back of your car. " there was no warning light to indicate that something was wrong and no prior leaking. When she arrived at home the fuel tank was nearly empty and she informed me of the problem. I asked her when she had filled the tank and she said approximately 2 days ago and that prior to starting her short drive today had over half a tank of fuel. I took the car to the gas station to try to fill the tank. I was unable to fill the tank as the shut off mechanism kept triggered at the fuel pump. I was able to get less than half a tank of gas into the vehicle, so that I could drive is less than 5 miles to the mechanic. During this drive I lost approximately 1/4 of a tank of fuel. After an analysis of the vehicle they determined that fuel was leaking through the carbon canister. They identified this as an issue related to a recalled suction jet pump seal. I had my vehicle towed to the vw dealership in order to complete the repair. I was informed that at that time the repair for the recall was unavailable. Their review of the vehicle noted that the carbon canister had overflowed and leaked. This is a direct result of the suction pump seal failing. I requested both from the dealer and vw directly that this repair be covered under the recall and they stated that the language in the recall prevents them from covering the expense of my repair even though this damage is listed as a potential result of their recalled parts failure. Vw put me & my loved one at risk. Driving a car that is leaking fuel is extremely dangerous and they have skirted their responsibility as a business by refusing to cover a repair that is a direct result of their recalled parts failure. I have filed a report w/ vw directly and the case number is 06376308.

13 Other Fuel System problem of the 2015 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 07/01/2024

Suction jet pump failed causing vehicle to have numerous issues and had to be repaired due to being unable to drive. Suction jet pump has a recall with no remedy. Repairs cost me $3369. 39 and car was in the shop for 24 days while shop tried to locate recalled part from a distributor.

16 Other Fuel System problem of the 2015 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 02/14/2024

This recall was issued in Feb 2024 and there is still not a remedy available. Feb 14,2024 manufacturer recall number20uf NHTSA recall number24v110 recall statusrecall incomplete, remedy not yet available I am smelling gas in my car intermittently and this could be related to the recall. We need a remedy for this now. So I am issuing this complaint.

17 Other Fuel System problem of the 2015 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 10/12/2023

Fuel leak in the passenger rear wheel well. Called local Volkswagen dealership and was told the suction pump was replaced in 2016 as the originals were known for having defects causing the same issues I am currently having. Replacement part seems to be defective as fuel is leaking onto the ground and in the wheel well which is a hazard for the environment and potential danger as a fire hazard. The problem has been recent for me (within the past 2 days) reading online it has apparently been a persistent issue since 2015 with the same make and model of vehicles for the 2015 and 2016 models.

18 Other Fuel System problem of the 2003 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 08/20/2023

When my car gets down to 1/4 tank it cuts out and dies I’ve replaced the fuel pump and fuel filter. I believe this is a serious possibly deadly issue. Please take action on making our vehicle safe to be on the road with a recall! I’ve talked to countless owners of the same vehicle I own and they are having the same issue. With no luck of fixing it on our own I’ve been in countless situations when I shouldn’t be stalling in middle of intersections, and on the highway doing 65-70 it’s not safe at all. Take note it only does it at a quarter tank and below anywhere on the fuel gauge about a quarter it doesn’t do it.

19 Other Fuel System problem of the 2015 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 01/06/2023

There have been several instances where I can’t fill gas tank. Check fuel tank cover light comes on frequently along with the check engine light. I smell gas while warming up my car there have been several instance where fuel gage is going down extremely fast, not in line with how much gas I’m using.

20 Other Fuel System problem of the 2015 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 09/03/2022

Gasoline leaking through the evap charcoal canister on my Gti 2015.

21 Other Fuel System problem of the 2015 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 03/25/2022

Vehicle started to show intermittent coolant gauge fluctuation with simultaneous loss of cruise control function. The coolant gauge would show cold, then hot. After visiting a dealer, a coolant leak was identified from a crack in the thermostat/water pump housing along with corrosion in the coolant bottle. In addition, the trunk latch failed, likely from a faulty windshield washer fluid valve leaking onto the electrical equipment. All parts were replaced. Within another 3 months the fuel pump failed and needed to be replaced. All parts were repaired at a Volkswagen dealer. The overheating of the engine and failure of the fuel pump could have caused engine failure and the car to lose immediate power, causing a fire or crash. The faulty rear door latch could have caused the door to open while driving. All of these issues occurred without warning. Check engine light, epc and disabled cruise control lights came on at the time of the problem. The vehicle also restricted the speed of the car and maximum rpms allowed.

22 Other Fuel System problem of the 2016 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 02/07/2021

The suction pump (part 5q0-201-029) in the evap emission control of my vehicle failed on February 7 2021 causing fuel to be brought into the charcoal canister and then into the purge valve. This led to heavy fuel smell in my vehicle and required replacement of suction pump, charcoal canister and purge valve. Note that this failure with exact same description was identified as part of the safety recall 20y6 (https://static. Nhtsa. Gov/odi/rcl/2016/rcrit-16v647-1179. Pdf) issued by nhsta on October 13 2016 and my vehicle was part of this recall. It was claimed that the issue was fixed on my vehicle on June 28 2017 as part of this recall by vw dealership. However, the suction pump which failed on February 7 2021 had the manufacturing date stamp of 15. 08. 15 which indicates that perhaps vw didn't replace the suction pump as part of the recall repair or replaced it with another faulty suction pump which still had the issue (since the manufacturing date of the failed suction pump is almost 2 years before the date of recall repair). Vw of America hasn't provided me clear answers to my questions stated below (see attached letter dated February 13 2021, that I sent to vw of America raising these concerns): I) would this suction pump that failed and which was manufactured on 15. 08. 15 will have the fix for the issue identified in 20y6? ii) what was the manufacturing date of the suction pump originally installed on my vehicle before the recall repair was performed? vw of America replied to me on February 15 2021 stating that they won't help me with this repair as the part was out of warranty. However, they didn't provide me answers to the specific questions I raised. If the recall repair was not done properly, isn't vw still responsibile to fix the issue that my vehicle suffered and I would also like them to provide me clear answers to the above two questions.

23 Other Fuel System problem of the 2015 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 11/01/2020

First car starts. Second put the gear into reverse. Third car starts to stall slowly shutting down the engine while in reverse. Fourth, car has difficulty starting the engine while putting in park gear. Fifth, I had to press the brake and the push start button in order to start while pressing the gas pedal to increase the rpm. Then I drive. This happens often when first starting the vehicle under stationary.

24 Other Fuel System problem of the 2016 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 08/12/2020

It sucks in too much air and fails as if it had a sparkplug fault it wastes too much gas and sometimes suffocates and wants to turn off.

25 Other Fuel System problem of the 2017 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 07/03/2020

7-3-2020: drove car in drive mode and sport mode throughout the afternoon, stopped to talk to someone and car sat on a flat surface, idling when suddenly there was gasoline leaking out of the rear right wheel well. Parked the car for the night, had no more leakage. 7-4-2020: drove to vw dealer/service about 20 minutes away in drive mode, did not have replication of the gasoline leak. 7-6-2020: vw called and said they couldn't replicate the problem. He said they drove it, had it idle, put it on a flat and an angled surface, looked at everything while it was on a lift. . Saw nothing. I was out of town so I picked the car up on 7-13-2020. 7-13-2020: picked up car and drove half a mile to gas station to fill up. Car immediately would not allow fuel to be added, popping the gas handle lever every half gallon. I called vw and he said to try another pump. I didn't have time to continue checking so I drove the car, in drive mode, and had no problem. 7-15-2020: finally had time to try another gas pump, had the same issue with car not allowing gas to be filled, popping gas handle lever again every half gallon. Decided to take it back to vw. Briefly put the car in sport mode and felt like the car was starved of fuel. Had my husband follow behind me to vw. Decided to put it into sports mode about a mile from vw and husband called me within seconds to tell me my vw was leaking fuel, varying from a steady drip to stream. Half a mile up the road I pulled into vw service and fuel was legit gushing out, creating a puddle the size of a small baby pool, were there not a drain for it to drain into in the service garage. Currently awaiting word about diagnosis.

29 Other Fuel System problem of the 2019 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 11/27/2019

While driving at low speeds and coming to a stop, the engine may sputter as if it isn't getting the correct air/fuel mixture and shuts off. This is an s trim Volkswagen Gti with a manual transmission and driver assistance package. The incident(s) occurred while in neutral on the three occasions it has happened. The vehicle has 700 miles on the odometer. I believe this to be an engine/electrical system issue.

30 Other Fuel System problem of the 2019 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 07/25/2019

When at idle or coming to a stop, with the car in neutral and the clutch pedal not engaged the vehicle will soft stall and require a key turn to start the motor again. This has happened several times on a brand new vehicle. 6spd manual.

31 Other Fuel System problem of the 2019 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 07/15/2019

The car stalls when coming to a stop- 0 mph and at idle with clutch in or in neutral. This is happening more often and seems to happen more when the car is warmed up.

32 Other Fuel System problem of the 2019 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 07/12/2019

The car stalls when either driving very slowly or stopped. I bought it Wednesday, July 10th. It first stalled yesterday, while I was in neutral at a stop light. Today it stalled four more times. Three times in a parking lot and once at a stop light. The car had normal engine temperature. When it stalls it's so quiet and subtle that it's difficult to notice. Each time the vehicle was stationary and in neutral. I entered several issues, as I'm unsure what is actually affected.

33 Other Fuel System problem of the 2019 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 07/10/2019

The engine stalls when approaching a stop despite being in neutral. The stall is gentle (not sudden). Each time, the coolant and oil temperature were at regular operating temperatures (warmed up, not cold). This has happened 3 times thus far, at approximately 30 miles, 120 miles, and 500 miles on the odometer. This car is with the manual transmission.

34 Other Fuel System problem of the 2019 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 07/08/2019

Bought a new 2019 vw Gti 's' in 6 speed manual. The vehicle stalls and has stalled at least 10 times and I've had it for about a week. Its very concerning. I've made an appointment to take it in tomorrow, and I've called vw customer care to let them know. It happens while coming to a stop, has happened in the middle of the intersection. I see many others are having the exact same issue but vw is currently unwilling to acknowledge the problem. Sounds like many different parts have been replaced for various consumers to no avail. Most stories I've read have ended in vw buying back the lemons. . .

35 Other Fuel System problem of the 2019 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 07/05/2019

Bought a new 2019 vw Gti rabbit edition in 6 speed manual. The vehicle stalls and has stalled at least 10 times and I've had it for 2 days. Its very concerning. I've made an appointment to take it in, and I've called vw customer care to let them know. It happens while coming to a stop, has happened in the middle of the intersection.
