Power Window problems of the 1999 Volkswagen Jetta - part 1

58 problems related to power window have been reported for the 1999 Volkswagen Jetta. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Power Window problem

Failure Date: 03/06/2007

I own a 1999. 5 Volkswagen Jetta iv GLS. There is a major problem with the window regulators and Volkswagen refuses to recall them. They know there is a problem as they have issued a 7-year extended warranty on the part. I have had to get the regulator replaced on my front passenger side window twice, due to window falling into door. This was under extended warranty. However my front driver side window (which I hardly ever use) has fallen into the door. I am now outside of the extended warranty period and the dealership is trying to charge me $500 to replace the regulator. I should not have to spend $500 I do not have on a part that is known and well documented to be faulty. This defective part poses several dangerous possibilities. For example I am currently driving with plastic where the window should be to secure the car from weather and intruders. I can hardly see through it; this is very dangerous, it is a huge blind spot. If there is an attacker I can not shut the window. I can not secure the car. If the weather was bad driving would be difficult. Sometimes the faulty regulators make the windows stuck closed. If there was a wreck someone could get trapped inside. Please put pressure on Volkswagen to do a full recall on this part. Everyone who has a recent Volkswagen has experienced the window regulator failure. It is irresponsible and negligent for Volkswagen not to recall this.

2 Power Window problem

Failure Date: 12/11/2005

In my 1999 Volkswagen Jetta, all four power windows have had to be replaced in the last 5 years and now another has broken and needs to be replaced. A very shoddy product from what used to be a great car company. I've bought three vw's but never again. Shame on Volkswagen!.

4 Power Window problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2005

1999, Volkswagen, Jetta wolfsburg edition. Front and back passenger side power windows will not go down; back driver's side window fell down into door. Passenger's side windows was stuck in the up position could represent a hazard should there be a wreck and the windows could not be let down. Driver's side rear window fell down into the door was a security risk, not only for being able to secure the car, but from someone being able to enter the car while driving. Volkswagen had a service order to repair the known defective mechanism in the late model 1999 cars and later, but it did not cover the early 1999 models, even though it was the same problem and defective parts. Neither the dealer on lorain avenue in north olmsted cleveland, ohio nor Volkswagen of America will repair the defect without charge to the consumer.

8 Power Window problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2004

I was driving home from work. It was a nice day so I had the front windows open part way. When I hit the expressway, I decided to put the windows up. When I hit the switch for the passenger window, I heard the sound of plastic breaking. I looked over and saw the passenger window fall into the door. I drove home and removed the panel to find a couple of broken plastic clips in the bottom of the door. I have not contacted volkwagen yet, buy apparently this is an ongoing problem that Volkswagen refuses to recall.

9 Power Window problem

Failure Date: 05/21/2004

I own a 1999 Volkswagen Jetta. I have now had to replace the window regulator on 2 occasions. A quick survey of the internet shows that this is not an unusual repair.

10 Power Window problem

Failure Date: 01/04/2004

Both my passeger side window and the rear window of the passenger side does not work - I heard there was a recall but I can not find any information.

11 Power Window problem

Failure Date: 10/03/2003

Power windows are winding down by themselves and happened twice (10/3/03-10/04/03). I go outside and all the windows are down. If someone steals my car , then vw will have to buy be another!.

12 Power Window problem

Failure Date: 08/08/2003

Multiple problems: main complaint 1. Failure of window regulator, driver and passenger side - several times on each side 2. The car is a 1999 and I have replaced the battery twice once in 2000 (blew up) and once recently (8/2003) and now starter motor and alternator are failing. Sometimes the gas gauge works and sometimes it doesn't, sometimes the key lock/alarm works sometimes it doesn't and horn works intermittently - all problems since 2000. The car is known to lock/unlock itself. The fender liner and front grills fell off in 2000. The sunroof cover and the sunroof have both failed once. The gas tank cover failed twice. The front clutch dropped off the engine while driving at 24500 miles and the dealership did not work with me on expenses ($600 to fix). The vw symbol on all 4 tires have fallen off (only in place with adhesive).

13 Power Window problem

Failure Date: 07/20/2003

Front passenger-side power window has fallen into the door and will not come up.

14 Power Window problem

Failure Date: 07/13/2003

Regulator on driver's side window broke again. Recently repaired cup holder fell apart again. Car self-locks (locks me out of my car by itself) plus I paid for numerous other common problems listed by others. Volkswagen never takes care if their known problems. Consumers need to get together & file class action suits!!!!.

15 Power Window problem

Failure Date: 03/12/2003

The window regulators have been replaced on 5 occasions. Twice on the same two windows and now two different windows are defective.

16 Power Window problem

Failure Date: 11/14/2002

Brake light switch replaced because cel illuminated indicating a failure of same. After some testing, it became apparent that the brake lights were not illuminating approximately 9 out of 10 times that the brakes were applied. At approximately the same time, the right turn signal began arcing. Replaced the right front signal bulb due to carbon buildup on the bulb. Also replaced the turn signal relay. Right outer cv boot was found to be leaking grease on 5/22/2002 and again on 4/29/2003; in both cases it was replaced. Battery died on 3/10/2003. On 7/9/2002, the center rear seat belt became stuck in its retractor and would not release. Seat belt assembly was replaced. On 10/1/2001, the driver's front window regulator was replaced after the window fell into the door without warning.

17 Power Window problem

Failure Date: 11/02/2002

Right rear window fell into door when powering it down and then back up. Power motor sounds as if it is still working, therefore suspect the mechanical clips holding the window to the power motor must have failed. Research shows that window clips have been a problem for this make and model. In fact, on November 5, 2002 vw. Com website was showing a press release explaining that window clips were failing, and vw would be sending letters out to 1999-2002 vw owners about repairing/replacing the window clips with redesigned clips (note: this is not a part recall, but only a letter to owners). In addition, my front right window occasionally does not power itself from open to fully closed (it stops half way). Assume this is well known "power window voltage regulator" problem that vw is currently covering the repairs for (but I can never get the failure to repeat itself when I bring it into the dealers so they wont agree to tell vw it is broken until they actually witness the failure). ****dimsii ivoq entry posted after 12/12/02 cut-over to artemis****769315.

18 Power Window problem

Failure Date: 10/15/2002

2 days after we purchase the car a brake shoe braket came off and was rubbing the rear rotor. July, 3 windows went bad, 2 were the wiring and 1 was the motor. October the front wheel bearing needed replaced plus wheel alignment. September the exhuast broke off behind the catalytic converter I had it fixed myself. The exhuast had also broke off 6 months earlier in front of the muffler but I fixed it. One window that they fixed in July 2002 went bad again in June of 2003 and needed fixed. The rear brake on the same wheel that they fixed in January of 2001 has gone bad now. I'm done with this car. It's been in the shop more then I have ever had any car combined. Thanks.

19 Power Window problem

Failure Date: 08/17/2002

I heard a snapping noise when I raised window. When I tried to lower the windows, the driver's side front window fell in between the door & panel. I've been told by the dealership that this part is on national backorder and I may not be able to get one for six weeks.

20 Power Window problem

Failure Date: 08/08/2002

While driving, I went to crack open my driver side power window. The entire window dropped into the door and broke inside the door. It happened very fast and made a fairly loud noise. When I called my vw dealer, they said that this is happening due to plastic window clips expanding and breaking with excessive heat. I live in the south and it's been very hot. They told me that there is a backorder for the replacement parts (now with aluminum wiindow clips), but that I could bring my car in and they would put it in the vw "cue. " I did so this morning. There were 8-10 vws with broken windows just in front of my car, with the exact same problem. This is only at one of two local dealers, and they both have as high of a volume/backorder. I am upset that they won't proactively replace other windows with the plastic clips. They report that the windows have to break before they'll pay for them. I am told that my extended warranty will cover the cost of replacement, but have no confirmatin of this yet. Vw should do a national recall and fix all these windows for free. I will not buy another vw, and I'm hearing many people say this. This is not my first prototpye (happening across vws) problem since the 3. 3 years I've owned the car. I've had a door seal fall completely off and have had major problems with bumper and curb clearance, causing me to have to have the entire front bumper and guard replaced ($500 for insurance deductible). The engine in the car seems to be fine, with the exception of the O2 sensor that had to be replaced at 1. 5 years of ownership. I was told, but have no confirmation, that this sensor problem is also somewhat common with the newer vws. Other than that laundry list, I love my car!.

21 Power Window problem

Failure Date: 08/02/2002

Power window was going down, heard snap and window never went back up. Service center said it would be 5 days before they could get me in and they decided to duct tape my window so it would stay up. They said this is a common vw problem. . . Somehting about a plastic regulator. Nevr buy Volkswagen.

22 Power Window problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2002

This is a known problem by Volkswagen. This is the 4th time my window regulator has broken. The last time I spoke with vw and they said they acknowledge there is a problem. The last time my window fell, I was in a parking lot and a "crazy" person came running towards my car yelling the the police were going to get him. As I quickly tried to roll up my window, it broke. I was extremely upset and sped away.

23 Power Window problem

Failure Date: 06/29/2002

Front passenger's side window has been a constant problem . I have talked to several people who have had their regulators replaced numerous times . This is my third time and each time I 've had to pay to get it fixed. Volkswagen will not admit there is a problem . It's a problem when you have no way of keeping rain out of the car . I have had other probems with this car which I don't have time to write about .

24 Power Window problem

Failure Date: 06/26/2002

The drivers side window fell into the door and will not come up. Both the dealer and manufacturer were contacted and responded that it is the regulator. It seems that there have been many complaints with the same problem. I was told that Volkswagen uses plastic pieces to support the window. Obviously it is a defect in the design, which needs to be fixed, but not at the consumers level. I was told that this is not covered under the warranty, but the car is not even 3 years old with hardly any miles. In my opinion, Volkswagen needs to recall these cars and remedy the problem at no cost to the consumer. Please help.

25 Power Window problem

Failure Date: 06/20/2002

Window just dropped down into the door. Plastic clips inside cracked.

26 Power Window problem

Failure Date: 06/16/2002

The power window regulators failed while driving on the freeway, causing the window glass to fall hard into the door panel, causing me immediate alarm. This is the 3rd such failure. It has occured once already on this same window, and the regulator was replaced with a "new design" by the dealership. This also occurred on the driver's side window previously. Each repair costs me $360, so my total for the 3 repairs over the past year have been $1080. This is a major safety issue as once cannot park their car with the windows open safely let alone drive at highway speeds or in bad weather. I have read numerous reports of these failures and also the dealerhsip has confirmed this and it's about time Volkswagen of America did a recall and I get reimbursed.

27 Power Window problem

Failure Date: 06/13/2002

Rear brakes were sqeualing for months. Took into dealership 5 times and they could not duplicate noise. Finally rear brakes went all together and had them replaced at another dealership. Dealer said they should not have gone after just over 30,000 miles so Volkswagen covered half of costs. One week later picked up car as I was driving home malfunction indication light came on. Took into dealership again. All three oxygen sensors had blown. Day after picking up from dealership passenger window fell into door and is currently back in being fixed. I know these are all common problems with 1999 Jetta. Vw was somewhat helpful on cost but will do nothing now because they "have already been too kind". This car is dangerous and I do not feel comfortable driving it anymore. Now I have to cover the cost of an early lease termination for fear of injury or more $ for damage repairs.

28 Power Window problem

Failure Date: 06/12/2002

Power windows and rear center seatbelt first failed within months of purchasing the vehicle. Dealer has made repairs but same components continue to fail in the same fashion. I never know when the driver or passebger window will fall into the door and cannot be raised until the whole assembly is replaced. The rear center seatbelt periodically retracts to the point where it will not release making it unuseable until the dealer repairs it.

29 Power Window problem

Failure Date: 03/28/2002

The window in the front passenger door intermitently rolls down when the automatic locking occurs at 9. 5 mph. The switch to control the window on the driver's side has failed. When this occurs the only way to get it to roll back up is to get out of the car and roll it up by turning the key in the door lock. Nlm.

30 Power Window problem

Failure Date: 02/15/2002

Volkswagen does not seem to think it's a safety issue when you are out of state driving home with your children on i75 in the middle of December while snowing and your window fall's down. I feel it is a safety issue when you cannot stop to call for help for the fact your in an unfamiliar place and you do not feel safe, so you proceed to drive on a hwy. With your window down for two hours while snowing. My kids were so cold when we arrived home, which I find ridiculous that we had to experience this in the first place, but yet still an additional three more times. It is well known on the internet of complaints of the window regulator being a defect and it's in the market for paying customers to be inconvenienced over and over again. No yet has Volkswagen compensated the time and inconvenience this has caused vw owners. I only wish someone would have told me before my purchase of the amount of occurrences I would be dealing with on repairs, I would not have purchased a Volkswagen. I will definitely educate anyone I come in contact with on what they will be faced with if they purchase a Volkswagen.

31 Power Window problem

Failure Date: 02/02/2002

Just bought this used car and after using the window twice, the regulator broke. According to Volkswagen, this is a reoccuring problem and there is not prevention against it. I'm from WI and can't have a broken window in the middle of winter. Plus when I cannot do business in IL anymore because my window doesn't work and it is too cold out to be driving like that.

32 Power Window problem

34 Power Window problem
