This is a followup on my NHTSA complaint with odi 10660489. I would like to bring to your attention the NHTSA campaign id number 04v584000 which precisely describes the same problem I have encountered with my Jetta. Please note that my Jetta is also a 2002 model as noted in the above campaign.

7 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 05/19/2014

The car takes 15 minutes to heat up to 190, otherwise the car won't drive forward in proper gear without jerking. It drives like it is a stick shift instead of an automatic changing gear on it's own. The car stops without me pressing the brakes and sometimes just turns off unexpectedly. It smells like gasoline in the car. The cd player, clock and vehicle electrical malfunctions on and off. The engine light stays on. Autonation performed a multi point inspection and says the car needs a timing belt, coolant flange and after run pump, and rollers.

8 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 08/07/2013

Engine abruptly lost all power and turned off while driving down the street. No warning lights came on, and the car restarted and ran normally for 6 months. The same thing happened about 6 months later. 10 minutes after the second episode, mechanic wasn't able to find a fault code and drove it without the stall recurring.

The approximate failure mileage was 116,000.

10 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 04/19/2012

When backing out of my driveway my drivers side airbag deployed for no reason. I didn't hit anything. Now the engine starts then stalls. All dash lights are now out.

11 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 12/26/2011

Driver side lach switch, unable to lock my 02 Jetta with remote key. Interior light on the driver door constantly stay on.

12 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2009

The bottom seat heater on my 2002 vw Jetta either doesn't work at all or if it turns on, it overheats the extreme right side of the seat. A small hole is burned in the upholstery, and the foam underneath is melted, deforming the appearance of fabric above. This could result in a burn to the skin on the right side of the leg if it goes undetected. I see this as a huge safety issue.

13 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 11/25/2008

While driving the vehicle, smoke and a burning smell started to emerge from the cabin instrument cluster. I pulled to the side of the road and now noticed that the fuel level display and the coolant temperature display are not working even though engine was a normal operating temp and the fuel tank was just filled up.

14 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 05/22/2008

Manufacturer refuses to reimburse me for work done for a manufacturer recall not performed at a dealership, even though car could not be driven there due to recall defect and mechanic came to my house to repair the defect with an authorized manufacturers part.

15 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 10/14/2007

Car will suddenly stop working. Vw corporate will not address as the car has hand many issues and is no longer in warranty. Spent $2k with vw dealer to diagnose. Appears to be electrical in nature. While driving the car suddenly stop running and all electrical stops bring car to a halt. Issue began 9/07 and dealer has had car in shop about 2 months in total.

16 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 06/28/2007

I have 2002 Jetta having the same electrical problem. The door / latch switch has a malfunction and won't come on when the door is open. The dome light does not come on and the light on the door does not come on. Which can cause an accident if the vehicle coming from the rear of the vehicle and can't see the door is open at night. The dealership won't replace it even though it was still under warranty at the time. There are plenty of people having the same problems and pays the dealership a lot of money to have it fixed. Obviously it is a problem with all Jetta that year. The dealership should have a recall the defective switch be replace. Could potentially cause a fire.

17 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2007

(1) many electrical anomalies. Loss of air condition. Dealership advises it is coolant migration causing electrical/power problems. Coolant migrating from coolant bottle into the electrical harness and into all electrical systems. (2)coolant migration has caused severe electrical problems and the vehicle must be re-wired. Cost to me $310. -to be determined(probably 6-10,000$) (3)dealership refused to assist with getting vw of America to correct the problem at their cost. Vw of America refused to correct the problem at my request. Vw has known since 2001 (see technical bulletin 97-01-01) that the coolant bottle is defective and has not recalled it, or provided technical bulletins as to how to prevent it. Dealer advises the car is not safe to drive in its present condition.

18 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 09/03/2006

Way to many to list here. I have had problems from the start. More than $7000 worth of repair (plus more that was covered by warr) the final item that caused me to say I would never consider another vw product was the engine damage caused by a timing belt failure. All services were performed at the dealership. The users manual states inspection of the belt at services (that I paid for) and replacement at 120,000 miles. I only had 92,000 miles. It will cost $5,000 to repair the engine. It is not cost effective to repair this car. It was a great car to drive but quality control is poor at best.

19 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 05/23/2006

Turn signal stalk is defective and causing a full electrical loop causing a fast clicks as if the turn signal flasher was on, but it's not. At times it has caused the flasher lights to come on when I had not even touched the turn signal stalk.

20 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 01/13/2005

Repeated failure of break lights in 2002 Volkswagen Jetta over 2 and 1/2 year period. Incident #1 ? date: 10. 29. 02 od reading 5226 miles ro# 776322 incident #2 ? date: 07. 18. 03 od reading 15765 miles ro# 817328 * incident #3 ? date: 12. 15. 03 od reading 19219 miles ro# 843079 incident #4 ? date: 07. 14. 04 od reading 24000 miles ro# 877075 incident #5 ? date: 01. 13. 05 od reading 31291 miles ro# 26004548/1 * this was when the recall break light switch was installed per NHTSA recall no. 04vo96. We have narrowly avoided collisions in the last two of these incidents of failures and have asked that Volkswagen take the car back from us as after the fourth attempt to correct the problem they cannot ensure our safety in the vehicle. Volkswagen has refused our request and insisted that they repair the car under the terms of the warranty for the fifth time despite the track record of failures. The comment made to me is if it happens again to be sure to contact them with my concerns?.

21 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 08/28/2004

Bought new 2002 Jetta had no brake light problems until I received recall notice concerning switch recall. Took car to dealer w/ recall letter and they replaced switch. No problems for about 4 months, then brake lights began staying on and acceleration occasionally cuts out. Dealer had car off and on for a month and a 1/2 problem w/ lights and accel. Continues.

22 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 10/13/2003

I have taken in my 2002 vw Jetta about 9 times for electrical problems: the engine comes on, the doors have messed up, the odometer is incorrect and the speedometer floats drastically 5-10 miles up and down. This is an extremely dangerous car not only for the electrical problems that might cause a fire, but also because people don't know how fast they really are going - this is an extreme hazard. My friend's 2001 vw Jetta is just starting to do the same things as mine, with the engine light coming on, and a women today said all of her friends got rid of theirs for the same reasons - Jettas with electrical problems.

23 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 01/29/2003

The coils on my 2002 Volkswagen Jetta GLS 1. 8t are burning out. Volkswagen of America has informed me that rather than replace all 4 coils, I must wait until each coil burns out before they will replace it. I have a letter from them as well stating they are aware of the problem but can not do anything more about it due to a lack of coils in stock. I guess the letter is a way to shut the customers up. Apparently this is happening to over 500,000 people last I heard. I want this complaint logged and a personal note added and directed to Volkswagen of America (if possible), "I will not renew my lease on this lemon and I will never purchase another Volkswagen again. " the coil issue is just one of the issues I'm having with this vehicle. The date below is the last time I went in for coil replacement and got to work late.

24 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 01/07/2003

Coil pack has been replaced 3 times but vehicle continues to lose power and drive rough. There have been several occasions when an accident was narrowly avoided. I do not feel safe driving this car. This is a lease. I offered vw the option of letting me make one cash payment to pay out the lease but vw refused to do this. Vw said I have to keep this car until 90 days before due date. Car has been towed in 3 times for this problem and driven in three other times. I never know when I will have to walk.

25 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 12/12/2002

Coil pack failed on Volkswagen Jetta 2002, luckily it died on start up and not while traveling. Car has 4 coil packs, dealer only repaced one. Vw has numerous cars with same failure, numerous times. Requested they replace all coil packs, they said no. They agreed with me that there is a good chance car will fail again. What happens if it fails while driving on the highway ? !.

26 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 11/23/2002

Epc warning light came on while driving. When this occurred, tail lights and brake lights were not functioning. When I arrived at my destination I parked my car as usual. When I returned to my car, it started, but I could not shift out of park. I called the roadside assistance number. They instructed me to hit the brake with my foot as hard as possible. This allowed me to shift out of park. They also suggested that I take my car to the dealer as soon as possible for service.

27 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 10/10/2002

Bad coils! in October of 2002, my 2002 Jetta 1. 8t broke down. I was told that coil #3 had burnt out. When I asked the dealer why this occurred, I was told it was a fluke. I had not realized that I had been lied to. On December 24, 2002 my car broke down again. Now coil #4 had burnt out. This time I was told that it is a reoccurring problem in 2002 Jettas with 1. 8t engines. I asked if all coils could be replaced but was told no. I was told that I just have to wait for my car to break down again and it probably would. Why is there no recall? according o vw, they do not have enough parts to have a recall. This is absurd!.
