1 Ignition Coils Failure problem

Failure Date: 11/17/2009

The contact owns a 2002 Volkswagen Jetta. While driving 55 mph the vehicle lost power and decreased speed to 10 mph. He was able to avoid a crash and drive onto the emergency lane. He was also able to drive the vehicle to his residence. The dealer stated that the ignition coil caused the vehicle to lose power. The manufacturer stated there were no related recalls. The failure and the current mileages were 52,000. Updated 03/01/10 the consumers daughter hit the front seat and sustained a bloddy nose. Updated 09/16/10.

2 Ignition Coils Failure problem

Failure Date: 11/26/2008

Ignition coil!!! was entering interstate and accelerated and engine lost a lot of power and started running roughly. Was lucky enough to be only a few miles away from a vw dealership (not my own, we were out of town). They said #1 coil failed, be careful because the rest will probably follow shortly, but recommended I wait for another one to fail and then replace the rest. $230 and 16 days later, another failed. Was not accelerating hard, just normal hwy driving. Started doing some research, found out this is a major problem and has been known for 5 yrs!!! will complain to high heaven to get these replaced free of charge. I understand normal wear and tear and a random part here and there failing, but a 5yr old problem is a little bit harder to understand. Dealership and vw need to practice better business practices and I don't know why this hasn't been an official recall yet. Losing power at 65mph on an interstate is very dangerous, no matter what vw or NHTSA says. What is it going to take? deaths? I hope I can get this resolved to my satisfaction by the dealers and vw.

3 Ignition Coils Failure problem

Failure Date: 11/28/2006

Failure of ignition coil pack as described in NHTSA action number dp05004. Coil pack failure was diagnosed by dealership service department (where we had the car towed after it died on an interstate highway). The dealership intends to bill me about $700 to replace the coil pack. When I mentioned the customer satisfaction campaign cited in the action summary on your website, both the dealership and the vw customer care center said they had no information about it and would not honor it.

4 Ignition Coils Failure problem

Failure Date: 01/06/2005

Repeat ignition coil and ingition coil wiring harness failure. The coils fail to spark resulting in reduced engine power and the wiring harness sheathing keeps cracking apart, resulting in ground out on the engine.

5 Ignition Coils Failure problem

Failure Date: 05/25/2003

Ignition coil failure. This is the third failure of the electrical system on this auto. On the previous two failures, vw would not replace all four coils, but only those coils that were the cause of the problem. As a result work time has been lost, and it has been a great inconvenience to take time off of work, have the car towed, and travel to the repair facility. Request vw be required to initiate a recall to fix all problems.

6 Ignition Coils Failure problem

Failure Date: 05/21/2003

I want to know why NHTSA has done nothing about the vw ignition coil failures. This is a serious safety issue --the car can die at any moment, at any speed, under any conditions-- but apparently the agency does not care. I am afraid to drive my car any distance greater than 20 miles for fear of being stranded for hours (I live in a rural area). Vw has been unresponsive, essentially telling consumers that they must wait until a failure occurs before a fix will be offered. This places many at risk needlessly. I would appreciate a follow-up as to why there is no action being taken.

7 Ignition Coils Failure problem

Failure Date: 04/05/2003

A faulty ignition coil caused the engine to stall while driving. The dealer replaced the faulty coil pack.

8 Ignition Coils Failure problem

Failure Date: 03/23/2003

This is the second time in one month that I have taken my 2002 vw Jetta wagon in for repair for the ignition coil problem. How can a car manufacturer allow someone to drive around in a unsafe vehicle especially when you or the dealer can not predict when this will happen next? this problem needs to be resolved, but the corporations always win.

9 Ignition Coils Failure problem

Failure Date: 02/03/2003

I purchased a 2002 vw Jetta 1. 8t during the summer, 2002. I have recently been made aware of a safety-related defect with the ignition coils that vw is failing to do a recall to repair. While my understanding is that vw claims that this is not a safety issue, I am aware of publicized auto occurrences that point to a serious safety issue if this is not repaired. A recall is essential in order to repair this and correct this problem ASAP.

10 Ignition Coils Failure problem

Failure Date: 02/03/2003

Two of my ignition coils failed and I had to have the car towed to the dealership to have them replaced. Apparently this is a common problem with the 2002 Jetta 1. 8t. I would have liked to have all the defective coils replaced but I have read numerous complains that Volkswagen will not replace these because not enough parts have been produced. I should not have to have a car that is only one year old towed to the dealership. I don't understand why Volkswagen wouldn't do a voluntary recall on these as the problem seems to be widespread. I am happy with the service I received (colonical Volkswagen, westoborough MA) but disappointed in the manufactuer for not stepping up to the plate and notifying owners before their car leaves them stranded on the side of the road.

11 Ignition Coils Failure problem

Failure Date: 01/30/2003

I own a 2002 Jetta 1. 8t and two of my four ignition coils have failed. Vw has told me that they can only replace ones that are broken and refuse to replace the remaining two coils. This is extremely dangerous. I am afraid to drive because I have no idea when the other two will fail and the most likely will (as I am told by my vw service advisor)!!!.

12 Ignition Coils Failure problem

Failure Date: 01/26/2003

Ignition coil pack failed upon initial start up of engine today. This is my third failure to date on a less than 1 year old car. This failure can lead to an accident as you immediately lose the ability to accelerate at anything other than a crawl. We will see fatalities and injuries eventually. Please make vwoa recall all applicable 1. 8 liter turbocharged vehicles when the parts aren't on back order.

13 Ignition Coils Failure problem

Failure Date: 01/15/2003

Ignition coils of a 2002 vw Jetta 1. 8t "burned out" according to the dealer. He informed me this is a known and widespread issue. This causes the car to behave irratically, causing my vehicle to lunge forward while idling at a red light, and vibrate violently while driving at 20 mph on my residential street. After doing research on the internet talkign to the tow truck driver who towed the car to the dealership, and information from the dealership's mechanic, I have found that a large number of other owners have had this same problem with this part. Vw north America will not issue a recall voluntarilly, and this could cause a serious or fatal driving condition if this happens when travelling at highway speeds and the car begins to violently shake and vibrate as it did when I was driving, and I feel that it warrants further investigation by the NHTSA to see if an across the board recall is necessary to protect both owners of these vehilcles, as well as those who share the road with us. I have been told that due to the large number of people who have had the same problem that voldwagen cannot get enough of these coils to replace in those of us who need them, let alone a recall due to the sheer numbers of people who are breaking down due to this. . . This really should be looked into before it kills someone .

14 Ignition Coils Failure problem

Failure Date: 01/12/2003

While driving one of vehicle's ignition coils failed causing car to stall. The dealer advised consumer 1 more coil out of the four is badly damaged and will soon fail. Dealer will not replace until coil fails. Ts.

15 Ignition Coils Failure problem

Failure Date: 01/11/2003

Coil failure in 1. 8t engine. I have a '02 Jetta 1. 8t. One of the four ignition coils died while driving. Result was complete loss of power and sudden stop without benefit of brake lights. The car is then undrivable and needs to be towed to a dealer. This is a huge safety issue as had I been merging into traffic or had someone been behind me, this would have caused an accident. Vw acknowledges that there was a faulty design and has since redesigned the part. They also acknowledge that at some point every coil will fail in a simmilar manner. They, however, refuse to replace the other three pre-revision coils with the new part until each of them fails on its own. They further refuse to even sell the part (as it is easily fixed and would keep someone from becoming stranded if they had a spare. ) this is absolutely terrible. I will never buy another vw because of they way they have handled this issue. I am afraid to take my car anywhere outside of a few miles because I know that I will end up stranded at least three more times. I did not pay over $20,000 for an unsafe and unreliable car.

16 Ignition Coils Failure problem

Failure Date: 01/10/2003

My 2002 vw Jetta 1. 8t engine started to run rough, check engine light began to blink, and car smelled foul like burning rubber and sulfur. Engine power was significantly reduced. I was in busy traffic, but fortunately, was able to pull over safely. Had car. . . . . . Towed to vw dealer. No surprise- faulty ignition coil. Although this is known to be a bad part, dealer stated that vw would not replace all 4 coils, just the bad one, because the computer code only indicated one bad coil. Dealer said that vw doesn't have enough replacement parts to repair all 4. Just waiting for the others to fail. . . Hopefully in a safe location.

17 Ignition Coils Failure problem

Failure Date: 01/07/2003

While traveling on the highway the vehicle will shake and vibrate due to the ignition coil spring. Dealer is aware of the problem. Please provide additional information. Ph.

18 Ignition Coils Failure problem

Failure Date: 01/03/2003

My 2002 Jetta has had three ignition coils replaced in three seperate incidents. Each time the car completely stopped leaving me stranded. Vw has acknowledged that they have a coil problem but has refused to replace the remaining coil stating that they will not replace it until it fails. With the high likelihood that this coil will fail just like the others which were installed at the same time, vw's attitude shows a complete lack of regard for their customer's safety. Fortunately, up to now the failures have only cost me time and frustration. Until vw can do the right thing, I feel like I'm driving a ticking time bomb.

19 Ignition Coils Failure problem

Failure Date: 12/29/2002

Twice now, a single ignition coil has failed on my 2002 vw Jetta 1. 8t this results in immediate failure of the car to have sufficient driving power, preventing the car from being driven any further. The company has not recalled them _yet_ however thousands of us are having the same problem. My biggest comliant is that they will only fix one coil at a time, virtually guaranteeing that we will be stranded 2 more times in the next few weeks.

20 Ignition Coils Failure problem

Failure Date: 12/22/2002

2002 Jetta 1. 8 t, start shaking after driving for 5 minutes. Dealer detected as a failed ignition coil problem.

21 Ignition Coils Failure problem

Failure Date: 12/18/2002

This was the 2nd failure of one or more ignition coils on my 2002 Jetta 1. 8t causing a dramatic loss of power. The first time was November when 2 coils failed causing car to be almost undrivable, no accelaration and very hard to maintain speed. Second failure, luckily, only happened a couple of blocks from the local dealership. Same problem with no power, etc. If this would have happened while driving on the freeway it could lead to a rather bad accident. This probem seems very prevelant on the 2001 and 2002 vw and Audi models with the 1. 8 turbo engine.

22 Ignition Coils Failure problem

Failure Date: 12/17/2002

Failure of ignition coil. Ts.

23 Ignition Coils Failure problem

Failure Date: 12/05/2002

2002 Jetta glx (v6). Car has 10,000 miles on it and the second ignition coil pack just failed. Car has been in the shop for 3 weeks waiting for parts this time around. Dealer indicated that several other Jettas have been brought in with the same problem. Other vw owners (passat) indicated similar problems. Other dealers indicate similar problems and long wait times. I see from other complaints on the NHTSA website that this problem is epidemic in other parts of the country as well. The repeated and unexpected failure of the ignition coils is an incredibly serious safety issue for the drivers of these vehicles as well as anyone else on the highway. These coils fail without warning - the second one failed while I was hundreds of miles from home on a very lonely stretch of the western massachusetts turnpike (no cell phone service of course) early in the morning in a snowstorm!.

24 Ignition Coils Failure problem

Failure Date: 12/02/2002

While driving "check engine" started flashing, and there was a odor coming from the air vents. The dealership indicated after that the number 2 ignition coil had burnt out. A month later the number 1 ignition coil had burnt out. Replaced part on both occasions. Ph.

25 Ignition Coils Failure problem

Failure Date: 11/30/2002

While driving 2 ignition coils failed on two separate occasions which caused the vehicle to stall. The first failure was on 11/30/02 at 9500 miles and the second failure was on 01/18/03 at 11000 miles. The manufacturer advised that they will only replace defective coils when they fail.

26 Ignition Coils Failure problem

Failure Date: 11/21/2002

I feel that the high failure rate of vw ignition coil packs is a danger to the general public safety. It is not uncommon to have multiple coil packs fail. I have to cross a busy highway to go to work and fear being killed should I accidentally pull out into oncoming traffic and have this problem again. The car has virtually no power to accelerate to avoid an accident when this happens. Dt.

27 Ignition Coils Failure problem

Failure Date: 11/05/2002

I started vehicle, proceeded to drive, but vehicle shuddered and lost power. Also there was a slight foul smell. Malfunction indicator light came on. Was told car unsafe to drive by dealership, as ignition coils failed. They said only two damaged at this time and will not replace other two unless problem occurs again. There are other reported incidents on similar vehicles. I am afraid to drive vehicle if this causes the vehicle to be unsafe why are they not replacing all 4. This could also cause me to be stranded somewhere as I drive long distances on occasion. Dt.

28 Ignition Coils Failure problem

Failure Date: 10/24/2002

Ignition coils failed 3 times. Car has been in repair shop for a month, no replacement parts are being delivered. Dt.

29 Ignition Coils Failure problem

Failure Date: 08/06/2002

I've taken my 2002 Jetta 1. 8t in on 3 occasions to have an ignition coil replaced, and I'm still running the car with the fourth original ignition coil. The service manager even stated, "it's probably only a matter of time before the fourth goes bad, but we aren't authorized to replace it if it's not having any problems. ".

30 Ignition Coils Failure problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2002

Nar 03-24-2003 mr. The vehicle has been to the repair shop on 6 different occasions for the same stalling problem. The first time the incident happened the vehicle lost all power after coming to a stop. After the fifth visit the consumer was told there was a problem with the ignition coil and the consumer would have no other problems, however that proved not to be true. Each time the consumer went to the dealer another part was replaced with the same results.

31 Ignition Coils Failure problem

Failure Date: 06/08/2002

Hello. My complaint is about the 2002 Jetta 1. 8t. I purchased mine in may 2002 from curran vw in stratford, CT. With just 400 miles on the car, an ignition coil malfunctioned, and the shifting performance was very poor. In November, the second ignition coil malfunctioned. I was placed in a rental for about 10 days. Made the trip back to MA to pick up the car, got back to CT just to have the third ignition coil malfunction, less than one week later. Then, two weeks ago the car began, once again, to shake violently and lose power on I-95 at 6:30am on my way to work. I was forced to take the car down to 20mph. I dropped the car off at vw for inspection and was told it was fine and that it was not the ignition coil, but that they reset the computer for my peace of mind. I was also told that despite what I've read about the recent recall the ignition coils that I had to wait until they failed before having any replaced. (the one replaced last may was replaced with the same poor quality coil. ) it's about a week later and the car has been towed for the 4th ignition coil failure. I can't take it. I feel totally unsafe in this car. I drive in the slow lane so as to be close to the break down lane. How anyone can say that this is not a safety issue is beyond me, when the car significantly loses power with no warning - and on a highway where cars are traveling at 60-80 mph! this is a very serious issue that must be addressed. This car was a total waste of $25k+. What a terrible first new car buying experience.

32 Ignition Coils Failure problem

Failure Date: 04/14/2002

Ignition coils on the vw Jetta have failed twice. The computer module on the car has also been reprogrammed in an attempt to correct the problem. When the ignition coils fail, the car is unsafe and nearly impossible to drive. Ignition coil failure at highway speeds could be incredibly dangerous. Please make vw address this problem immediately.

33 Ignition Coils Failure problem

Failure Date: 01/22/2002

I had my first ignition coil pack fail a few days ago. The dealer was great and very prepared to handle this problem the best they could, however vw cannot make the parts fast enough to satisfy the demand and I will have a loaner car for at least 3 weeks. I know that vw will only replace the coil that failed so I guess I can look forward to this happening several times in the future. Great. I am disappointed and mad that vw knows about the problem and is unwilling to replace all 4 leaving me to break down again.

34 Ignition Coils Failure problem

Failure Date: 01/17/2002

Ignition coil pack failed, resulting in greatly reduced power. Would have been dangerous had I been in traffic. I understand that frequently they fail in multiples on this particular engine, disabling the car completely.

35 Ignition Coils Failure problem

Engine check light flashed soon after vehicle started losing power and jerking. Vehicle was on its fourth repair of ignition coil pack, service done by dealer. Ts.
