1 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 07/03/2023

So it appears to be fine until about 30/45 mins drive time then it starts shifting/slamming real hard and hesitates to shift in the next gear to the point where stopping and going isn’t an option or it slips after about 45 mins all the prnds lights turned on and did the same in manual mode. . I read someone it’s a valve body that leads to a faulty tranny I’ve read almost 150 of the same exact accounts on here and reddit with the same 2006 vw Jetta 2. 5 it’s too common of an issue most of them were under 100k miles and never dealt with by the manufacturer myself my car has roughly 168k miles and I’ve been working to fix it up I just got it a month or so ago and now I have to deal with this honestly is sad that vw hasn’t been held accountable for an issue that is way too common to not be their fault. I understand the car is almost 20 years old but a bunch of these accounts I were reading dated as far back as 2009 with 86k miles it’s a shame. .

5 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 11/12/2016

The vehicle has a long history of the throttle becoming inoperative resulting in no-power (idle power strictly speaking) conditions. That condition is cleared when the clutch pedal is depressed and released. Recently there was an instance of uncommanded acceleration: instead of no power, full power was applied by the engine. Again cycling the clutch cleared the condition. The no-power cases appeared more likely in urban driving and soon after a transmission shift but did occur under almost any conditions. The full-power case occurred once, climbing a hill at ~2800' altitude. The power fail occurred as early as 34k miles, and continued with vw's knowledge until ~72k miles, when vw of America technicians finally did something to end it. Those symptoms started reoccurring at ~270k miles. The acceleration incident occurred at about 275k miles. The vehicle has been taken out of service; it will be sent to a salvage yard if the ntsb is not interested in the vehicle.

6 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 11/06/2016

Key gets stuck in ignition when turning off the engine.

7 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 08/30/2016

My car has some shifting problems when in motion. My car has a jerking motion that it does when going into gears and when slowing down its rough going down gears.

8 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 08/19/2016

My camshaft and lifters went bad and were replaced in 2015. It was just around 100,000 miles. Then I found out today that they were bad again. My understanding from the mechanic is that this is a common problem, and looking at the Volkswagen tdi forum, that year is particularly bad. This camshaft failure caused a loss of power on the interstate during a heavy traffic time, both times. First incident was on I-240 in asheville midday. Second time was travelling west on I-40 near morganton, nc in evening traffic. Loss of power, smoking. I could barely get off the exit. I was lucky not to have impeded traffic, both times.

9 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2014

This car had a defective camshaft and lifters. Dealer refuses to repair under warranty 2 years ago, now its getting worst and I don't have the money to repair it.

10 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 09/09/2014

Currently experiencing a problem with the body valve in the transmission on my Jetta. There was an extended warranty for this part that ended in 2012. I am experiencing this problem with my car now and it is a safety hazard. My car shifts so hard between 1st and 4th gear and will have a significant lag time between acceleration which during traffic, can cause numerous problems. Vw won't offer any reimbursement to pay for this to be fixed because it is outside of the warranty however I think it is ridiculous when they know there was an issue with the part in the first place. So now I am stuck paying another $1,500 repair bill for this car in addition to all other repairs I have paid for. I know I am not the only one now experiencing this problem after the end date as I have called numerous body shops and dealerships who have shared that there have been multiple others with the same problem.

11 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 05/10/2014

The direct shift gear transmission failed. The car could no longer get out of neutral.

12 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 08/15/2013

Cam shaft and lifter inferior quality!!what has happened according to other owners of tdi's that I have talked to is that the camshaft and lifters have failed. They were built inferior and breakdown. This causes a lot of confusion with mechanics trying for endless hours to figure out why its smoking. With a lot of research I found out that the camshaft and lifters are inferior and breakdown. Why does Volkswagen do that to people, it cost me so many thousands of dollars replacing turbo, mass air flow sensor to rebuilding the engine for god sake to find that it is the cam and that this is a common problem. Volkswagen should be held accountable for this.

13 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 05/13/2013

Entire camshaft has to be replaced, car is inoperable. This is apparently a known issue but vw of America will not acknowledge this or help with the replacement cost, which is substantial.

14 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 04/03/2013

Vw is very much aware of the defect regarding camshaft failure in the engine, resulting in high repair costs and dangerous loss of power that could result in a collision. Vw southtowne in utah called the engine "experimental" basically admitted that vw knew there was a problem and only built the engine for 1. 5 years as a result. They only respond that the car is out of warranty and is the consumers problem to pay for a $4000 repair onto of paying for the loan on the car.

15 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 10/15/2012

The oil pan in the above mentioned vechile that I own had to be changed due to a design problem. The manufacturer had put a aluminum pan with a steel bolt. The steel bolt over the years corroded the pan necessiating a replacement of the pan. Fitzgerald automall (410-224-3480) in annapolis MD replaced the pan free of labor but charged me for the oil pan. They did inform me that it was a design problem that vw has since rectified in the newer models and that I had to contact the manufacturer for reimbursement. When I contacted vw, they refused to reimburse me stating that the vehicle was not under warranty. They informed it was under their discretion to rectify the defect in newer models and were not responsible for older models. In my opinion vw should reimburse me and also recall all their vehicles with this issue to be addressed appropriately. Please contact me at the above address if something can be done about this or not. [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

16 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 09/29/2012

Vehicle lost power. Engine became louder. Car shudders under acceleration. Camshaft failure. Camshaft must be replaced. Known issue with this car.

17 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 07/30/2012

At 130,623 miles our Jetta had to have the camshaft and lifters replaced. The lobes on the camshaft had completely worn off and the lifters had pitted. I feel like our diesel motor has aged prematurely and there is an underlying problem that vw is ignoring. This is a common problem for this model and year. We are having both replaced, but until the root of the problem is found there will be an issue again. Vw must know of this problem. They stopped production of the tdi Jetta in 2006. The 2006 was the last year before stopping production. Why would they stop making a car that was in such high demand with the rising cost of diesel and gas. They knew of an issue in the car that they couldn't figure out. Now they ignore the problem and continue to blame the customer for poor maintenance. The car is defective and vw needs to address the problem.

18 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 06/04/2012

On highway going approx 60 mph, car locked up, skidding for about 50 feet. Was unable to engage clutch, engine was still running though. Got car towed to dealership, discovered engine mount bolt had sheared off, car has never been in an accident and has had all oil changes/etc ( 2k miles late for 60k service).

19 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 05/04/2012

Camshaft began knocking around 100,000 miles. Many other '06 Jetta tdi have had premature camshaft failures as well. Knocking intensified just before 101,000 miles. Took it to mechanic who was very familiar with the issue, as he has seen more than his share. He said the earliest failure he has seen was at around 40,000 miles. I had to go to great expense to replace cam follower, camshaft and cam bearings. It also caused premature wear on my lifters, which I expect I'll have to do soon, as they are starting to "tick". I love my tdi, and have made sure all service was done promptly. I am frustrated that vwag has denied there is a problem. If enough people complain, then they will have to admit that poor engineering is the cause of the premature camshaft failures that are plaguing pumped use owners.

20 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 12/15/2011

The contact owns a 2006 Volkswagen Jetta. When the contact started the vehicle, she heard a noise similar to something moving inside the engine after the vehicle began violently shaking and jerking. When she attempted to place the vehicle into gear, the engine rpms would also increase. The vehicle was carefully driven to a private mechanic who informed the contact that the dual mass fly wheel had a hole in it which caused the metal to fracture the bell housing and damage the transmission. The mechanic replaced the fly wheel and informed her to replace the transmission. The manufacturer was aware of the failure. The current and failure mileage was 67,000.

21 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 12/13/2011

About 4 years ago ,I took my Jetta to the Volkswagen dealer in regard to front airbags recall. The light would not go off. They repaired it, but after a year the light came back on and stayed on. When I call the dealer, I was told I would have to pay for an inspection of the car before they can determine if it is defective or not. It seems to me they did not fix the problem and I should not have to pay for it. Also my horn want off, one day, and the only way I was able to stop it , was to pull the fuse out. When I put the fuse back , the horn would not work. Nothing wrong with the fuse. . My yellow engine light keep coming on , especially when I use my a/c and there is a very strange smell in the car. I only have 55000 miles on this car. And to top it all, while driving the car, I got a icon lighting up in regard to my coolant. The little black tube that connects to the reservoir had slipped off and all the antifreeze fell out of it onto the engine. Owning a Volkswagen is a real nightmare, had Honda before, put over 130000 miles on it and never had any problem. Will definitely never buy Volkswagen again and will not recommend it. To anyone.

22 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2011

The contact owns a 2006 Volkswagen Jetta tdi. The contact stated that while driving approximately 60 mph, he noticed that the engine was vibrating abnormally. The vehicle was taken to a dealer and they advised him that the flywheel failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was replaced for the flywheel. The manufacturer was contacted and they offered no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 84,000. The VIN was unavailable.

23 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 08/17/2011

The transmission is slipping between 3 and 4 gear and between 4 and 5 gear.

24 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 06/15/2011

Originally, the turbo would lose boost and the engine would lose power. After some time, particularly during wet weather, the car will suddenly vibrate, jolt, and then the engine warning chime sounds. The tachometer drops to zero, the oil pressure light comes on, the stability control shuts off, the glow plug lights flash, rear window defroster will not work, cruise control wont work, and if the car is shut off it will not restart. This is particularly dangerous during snow or rain, as the car loses traction control during weather in which it is most important to have. Also, if the car dies and is on the shoulder of the road, during rain or snow, there is poor visibility and it increases the risk of someone hitting the disabled car. I have seen many mentions of this same effect happening on other 2006 tdi models, and it seems to be a recurring issue with this particular model and engine type. The root cause appears to be an electrical harness that runs in the engine compartment chafing over time, which happens outside of the warranty period, but causes significant safety concerns with its failure mode.

25 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 05/27/2011

I took my 2006 vw Jetta tdi, 5 sp, 40k miles to the vw dealership for its 40k service on 5/27/11. After the service was completed, I started the car and noticed it was running very rough (the car wasn't running rough when I dropped it off for service). My service rep took the car back to the service technician who checked all the filters and re-bled the fuel filter to remove any air bubbles that may have been trapped, which did not fix the issue. The service technician took the cover off the engine and identified the that the camshaft is wearing. Maintenance on this car is completed every 5k miles and serviced by the dealership it was purchased from.

26 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 04/18/2011

The dual mass flywheel ( dmf ) failed at 90,801 miles.

27 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 11/17/2010

At 83,000 miles our Volkswagen Jetta tdi 2006 utterly failed with a cam shaft and lifters failure. This is a well known problem with the Jetta. - vw refused to acknowledge it. Within 3000 miles of the repair the turbo was completely destroyed - most likely from metal fragments in the oil from the cam lifter problem. They did nothing to clean the system with the first repair - which clearly led to the complete failure of the engine on the second repair. Again vw refuses to acknowledge the problem.

28 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 11/11/2010

2006 vw Jetta tdi has excessive wear on the camshaft with 96,000 miles on it.

29 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 05/13/2010

Bought new vw Jetta sedan on 08/17/06. On 05/13/10 took the car to the dealer because of car decelerating while driving I. E. Dropping in seconds from 60 miles to 20 miles. It was taken to the dealer multiple times for the same problem. Dealer answer "unable to replicate problem" until warranty of four years expired. The problem continues even after the carbon accumulated on the throttle was cleaned and the fuel pump was replaced. Due to unsafe to drive, requested for the dealer to buy the car back as a lemon. The dealer refuses because the four yr warranty is over. Other problems experienced with this vehicle during this period: air bags lights going off, air bag cover falling off, trunk opening on its own while driving, rain water leaking inside the lining of the car, screws coming off a door panel, doors falling off the hinges, emergency switch falling inside panel, fuel cap not locking, recalls. Dealer recommending to replace the steering wheel column for 2,340.

30 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 12/11/2009

The contact owns a 2006 Volkswagen Jetta. The contact stated that while driving approximately 35 mph, she heard a noise coming from the front end of her vehicle. When the vehicle was parked and turned off, the vehicle would not re-start. There were no warning lights prior to or after the failure. A local mechanic inspected the vehicle and stated that the dual mask fly wheel (connected to the crankshaft on the engine) had a large hole (size of a silver dollar) in it. She called the manufacturer but was told that there was nothing they could do about the failure. The vehicle was repaired by the mechanic. The current mileage was approximately 79,990. The failure mileage was 78,750.

31 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 08/22/2007

The contact owns a 2006 Volkswagen Jetta. The vehicle experienced various recurring failures since the date it was purchased. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer on numerous occasions where the battery was replaced, throttle valves were cleaned, the recirculation valve was replaced, the engine fan control module was replaced, the fuel pressure sensor was replaced, the crank case breeder valve was replaced, the high pressure fuel pump was replaced, and the cam shaft follower was replaced. The vehicle was also repaired under the recall 09v164000, power train driveline, driveshaft and had the sunroof drained due to water leakage. The failure mileage was 16,257 and the current mileage was 47,000.

32 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2007

Originally purchased in 2007. Complained about the car - when shifting it would excel and jerk after shifting. Then as time went on I would be driving and the Jetta would hesitate as if a fuel was not getting to the engine. I took my car in for regular oil changes and regular maintenance. I live in a rural area and drive just highway miles and have approx. 121,000 miles on it. I purchased this vw as I anticipated it to last a lot longer than a regular vehicle. When I took it in for the last oil change and the intermittent hesitation was really bad I was told it would cost me anywhere from $7500 to $8000 to fix. And I still owed $9000! I asked if it was covered under the warranty. Of course the warranty expired in July. . . But nothing was found all the previous times I had brought my car in for service. And vw's regional rep and hq was contacted and both were apologetic that vw could do nothing about fixing my car. Looking at the internet - I found that nationwide and up to canada other individuals with less mileage have had the same issue and individuals were seeking arbitration against vw. I understand vw does not have a recall or anything considering this is a recurring problem. All they can offer is $1000 to buy another vw!!! ther nerve! totally disheartened with vw.

33 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 06/17/2007

I was driving on I-80, I moved to the off ramp , and when I pushed the clutch, it went all the way down to the floor. The 2006 Jetta tdi with 26 000 miles now needed a new clutch and flywheel, $1700 repair bill. The new clutcha nd flywheel were not the same as the original. The replacement parts have been upgraded by volkwagen, why? maybe the original clutch was defective. Or Volkswagen did not take into account the added torque of the new pd engine. Very annoying.
