1 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 07/03/2023

So it appears to be fine until about 30/45 mins drive time then it starts shifting/slamming real hard and hesitates to shift in the next gear to the point where stopping and going isn’t an option or it slips after about 45 mins all the prnds lights turned on and did the same in manual mode. . I read someone it’s a valve body that leads to a faulty tranny I’ve read almost 150 of the same exact accounts on here and reddit with the same 2006 vw Jetta 2. 5 it’s too common of an issue most of them were under 100k miles and never dealt with by the manufacturer myself my car has roughly 168k miles and I’ve been working to fix it up I just got it a month or so ago and now I have to deal with this honestly is sad that vw hasn’t been held accountable for an issue that is way too common to not be their fault. I understand the car is almost 20 years old but a bunch of these accounts I were reading dated as far back as 2009 with 86k miles it’s a shame. .

2 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 05/26/2021

The contact owns a 2006 Volkswagen Jetta. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the transmission shuddered without warning. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the transmission was faulty and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the VIN was not under recall. The contact was referred to the NHTSA for assistance. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 156,000.

3 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 10/03/2019

Transmission goes into limp mode once vehicle reaches normal operating temperature. Codes are p1689 and p0746. When this happens the car will only function in 2nd gear and nothing else. This is very dangerous on interstates where the minimum speed limit can not be reached. Researching online, this is a known problem and the mechatronic needs to be replaced.

4 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 07/24/2018

Transmission nor shifting properly(automatic). Creates safety issues particularly on highway.

5 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2018

The contact owns a 2006 Volkswagen Jetta. During a routine inspection, the vehicle failed to pass emissions inspection. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who stated that the signal from the ecu and transmission module indicated that there were two pins that were defective and needed to be repaired. Colonial Volkswagen (89 turnpike rd, west borough, MA) was contacted regarding the failure, but they refused to assist the contact. The manufacturer was contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 163,000.

6 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 09/27/2017

While driving, the car seemingly pops out of gear (goes from 50 mph to 10 mph or less with no warning). It will not accelerate, even when pressing on the gas pedal. Very unsafe! we have been told that it is a transmission issue (one which vw recalled 2007-2010 models for).

7 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 01/11/2017

The contact owns a 2006 Volkswagen Jetta. While driving various speeds, the instrument panel indicators remained illuminated. Also, while driving on an incline, the transmission would downshift. Furthermore, the battery would drain overnight and the vehicle would fail to start. The contact called the lee summit Volkswagen dealer (located in lee summit, mo, (816) 600-4224) where an appointment was scheduled for diagnostic testing. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and did not offer any assistance. The approximate failure mileage was 180,000.

8 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 08/30/2016

My car has some shifting problems when in motion. My car has a jerking motion that it does when going into gears and when slowing down its rough going down gears.

9 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 07/04/2016

I have two major saftey problems that could have ended in a fatality. First my transmission went out without a warning while I was on the interstate going 75 mph and a 18 wheeler was behind me the car dropt down to 40 mph and I almost got rearended by the semi. I had the transmission rebuild. Second thing I pulled out of burgerking and the car has no power and about got tboned and theres no check engine light on.

10 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 04/16/2016

I've got a 2006 Jetta, 2. 0tdi with the dsg, I purchased 04-16-2016 from the original owner. It seems as if every time I stops and takes it out of gear and attempts to go into reverse it won't engage and the flash of death happens. Has to turn the car off/on to get it to move again. This is a classic safety hazard. I read Volkswagen and Audi (few years ago) are recalling 16,000 vehicles because of transmission problems that make them lose power -- or completely stall -- out of the blue.

11 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2016

Automatic transmission shifts hard and sometimes fail to shift. The is a major safety concern while operating the vehicle.

12 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 01/19/2015

After replacing the cam shaft and timing belt I took the car for a test drive. The problems were apparent, a hard shift from a stop into first gear and hard shifts all the way to 4th gear. From a full stop it will not respond to the accelerator and if it does it jolts. Multiple times crossing traffic the accelerator does not respond, and I have nearly been hit multiple times. I brought it into a service shop and they have said it is the mechatronics unit that controls the transmission. I was told that is an issue in many vehicles like mine, and to report it to NHTSA and Volkswagen.

13 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 08/03/2014

Tl * the contact owns a 2006 Volkswagen Jetta. While driving approximately 40 mph, the mounts snapped that secured the engine and transmission. As a result, the engine and transmission detached from the vehicle. The vehicle stalled and was unable to be restarted. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, who stated that the transmission and front driver side axle needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer was notified. The approximate failure mileage was 180,000.

14 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 07/09/2014

While driving in the highway the car's transmission suddenly downshifted by it-self and would not respond to the engine's acceleration commands. Since than is has been more often, and has caused fear and anxiety. There is no warning signs on the dashboard to notify the driver of any problems. I researched this issue and found out that there were other people that had the same problem, and there was a recall on the model 2007 and new-er. The 2006 model is not for some reason included in this recall. I contacted Volkswagen and it was just a waste of time.

15 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 05/20/2014

The contact owns a 2006 Volkswagen Jetta. While driving approximately 25 mph, the transmission shifted from drive into neutral independently without warning. The engine was turned off. After restarting, the vehicle resumed normally. The failure recurred five times. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 199,000.

16 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 03/13/2014

The contact owns a 2006 Volkswagen Jetta. The contact stated that while driving 70 mph, the vehicle suddenly decelerated. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, who replaced the "mechaeron". The manufacture was made aware of the failure however, declined to provide a remedy to fix the failure. The vehicle was repaired. The failure mileage was 192,000.

17 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 01/06/2014

Traveling along at 55 mph and the gear display started flashing/blinking as the car just shut off. It would not restart. Battery is fine.

18 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 12/10/2013

The contact owns a 2006 Volkswagen Jetta. While driving 45 mph, the vehicle speed decreased to 20 mph and all the instrument panel lights illuminated. When shifting into a gear, the vehicle would jerk. The failures recurred on numerous occasions. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who stated that the module and transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 138,000.

19 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 07/30/2013

#1 Jul 262013 Jetta sedan 2. 5l automatic transmission 87,850 miles a d v e r t I s e m e n t s I recently purchased a used 2006 vw Jetta with a dsg transmission and 2. 5 l motor. The vehicle lurches and loses power as if gas had been switched off or the transmission has bogged down and seems to occur when shifting. It also happens from a dead stop, with the vehicle lurching forward with considerable force when the transmission engages. This has occurred on both very hot days, 100+ degrees, and also during evening and nighttime while driving on surface streets and on the interstate though on the interstate it doesn¿t lurch forward when power is restored. The vehicle usually regains power 3-5 seconds after loss of power most times this occurs but there were a few times the vehicle stalled. Once this happens this condition continues to occur more with increasing frequency until the vehicle is not drivable. Once the vehicle has cooled off for a period of time, 2 or more hours, it drives with out this problem for the same amount of time, or less, as when driven from a cold start. This has also occurred while passing and forced me to cancel my pass of a slower moving vehicle and merge into the traffic which on one occasion had closed ranks leaving me no room to merge. I have only been driving this vehicle for about a week. This statement was posted around 8-5-2013. The problem is still the same.

20 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 04/17/2013

The dsg clutch on the 2006 vw Jetta tdi lost structural integrity and came apart completely while driving, destroying the automatic clutch and potentially the transmission. The springs are so damaged that they were ejected from the casing onto the the engine protection matt underneath the vehicle. There is extensive damage to the clutch which will need to be replaced completely and potential transmission damage.

21 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 12/30/2012

My wife and I were driving home and suddenly my car started jerking and made a "knocking" sound, without any warning (I. E. Check engine light). We were close to home and decided to continue on; however, in the next couple of miles, the problems persisted, still with no check engine light or any indication of what was wrong with the vehicle. Over the next several days, while parked on a secured premise, I started the car up and it had an erratic loping sound. I proceeded to call a nearby Volkswagen dealer and spoke to two certified vw mechanics, who failed to acknowledge the issue that there was no warning indication before the car started to act up and said to bring it in to swap out the engine at approx. $7500; they dismissed the problem as "normal wear and tear". I researched the problem on the internet and it lead me to believe that it was a problem with the cam, which I had confirmed by an auto-mechanic after towing the car in. He told me the entire engine was warped due to the cam going out. Other 2006 vw Jetta tdi owners have commented on the same issues, which at this point leads me to believe that it is not "normal wear and tear", but a manufacture defect.

22 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2012

Electrical problems have been abundant in this vehicle starting in 2012. Driver side door locks work randomly. The car responds to the keys randomly even with a new battery. Alarm will sound when it fails to respond to key. Over the last year lights go out monthly. Shifter electronics failed. Repaired in June 2014. Mechanic had no idea why it would go out which was cause for my concern.

23 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 06/04/2012

On highway going approx 60 mph, car locked up, skidding for about 50 feet. Was unable to engage clutch, engine was still running though. Got car towed to dealership, discovered engine mount bolt had sheared off, car has never been in an accident and has had all oil changes/etc ( 2k miles late for 60k service).

24 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 03/07/2012

At interstate speed, I heard a bang and the dsg transmission dropped into first gear. I was almost rear-ended by other motorists due to the sudden deceleration, but was able to make it to the right shoulder. All transmission indicator lights were flashing along with the check engine icon . I was able to limp home with only first gear available! fault code analysis shows a mechatronic module failure inside the dsg. Dealer said there were many dsg units recalled last summer, but mine was not on the list. :(.

25 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 02/28/2012

The contact owns a 2006 Volkswagen Jetta. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for unrelated repairs when the mechanic advised the contact that the dual mass flywheel would have to be replaced. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for repair. The vehicle was repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 125,000.

26 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 02/18/2012

Dual mass flywheel(dmf) detached itself, causing enormous damage to the transmission(dsg). Initially,I have to replace dmf, then crankshaft positioning sensor, crankshaft seal and bearing. This repair cost me $1,700. 00. After taking a closer look at the car,the mechanic found out that, because of the damagesdmf has caused to the transmission, the transmission is now leaking oil. A pieces of the dmf cut into the casing of the transmission and created a number of holes. As a result of all this, the mechanic suggested,as my only solution,to rebuilt transmission, which cost an additional $ 3,300. 00. Vw of America, denied any reimbursement, because warranty expired in January 2011. They can not explain why dmf faild. They just lost one customer.

27 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 02/17/2012

I own a 2006 Volkswagen Jetta tdi diesel (brm engine code). This car has died on me 4 times now, 3 three times on the expressway. It always happens when the engine gets to normal operating temperature and when I come to a stop. It does not happen any other time. By the way it acts, I assumed it was some sort of fuel problem. Due to the mild winter here in southern indiana the fuel is not gelling. Code reader displays "no codes". I changed the fuel filter. Then the fuel pump relay, and today I installed a new fuel pump. I started the car and let it warm up for about 20 minutes. I drove it down the road, slowed to a stop and it died. It will start back up after the engine cools down some. This car was at our local Volkswagen dealership for 3 days. Even after they consulted with vw tech's they couldn't figure it out.

28 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 01/19/2012

2006 Jetta tdi serious clatter coming from underneath close to transmission. Sounds like tin can clattering while in park or idling. Took to dealership was told it was a normal diesel clatter. After research and getting much worse found it is a defective dsg flywheel hundreds of complaints found online about this. Vw has now replaced the defective flywheel with a new one. But has not recalled this part!.

29 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 12/15/2011

While traveling at a speed of 45mph at 5:40pm on 12/15/11 my '06 Jetta tdi suddenly stopped driving. It sounded as though the car had slipped into neutral. This happened on hwy 83 in delafield. Hwy 83 is one of the busiest highways in wisconsin. We were unable to pull out of traffic and were stranded in the left of the 2 lanes. Our hazards were turned on as traffic started to pull around us we were calling aaa for a tow. Within 5 minutes of the stall we caused a 5 car pile up. Of the 5 cars, 2 were totaled. 2 other had significant damage. One had minor. We sustained no damage as we were not hit. Car was towed to a transmission repair shop where they found the dual mass flywheel to have caused the failure. $4,500 - $5,000 estimated repair from that shop. $5000 "minimum" from hall imports of brookfield. How many more people's lives will you allow to be jeopardized before you do something about this transmission problem? I am horrified that I caused an accident of this size! vw stopped making tdi's after 2006. . . Why? did they realize there was a problem? are you going to wait until someone is killed before you take action? I am going to research class action lawsuits to see if this group of vw owners has a case against vw. And what is the NHTSA's responsibility to take this further than just accepting complaints?.

30 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 11/25/2011

Vehicle stopped moving after stopping at the traffic light. Engine starts but car will not move . Shift position indicator flashing. Vehicles towed to the Volkswagen garage. Needs mechatronics transmission module replaced . Almost $2300 repair .

31 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 04/28/2011

When driving down road, transmission went into neutral and engine nearly redlined. Car would no longer move forward or reverse. Car had to be towed to a service center. The mechatron controller for the transmission had to be replaced. The car had a dsg transmission. We were lucky it was not on a busy road and highway speeds when it occurred.

32 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 04/18/2011

The dual mass flywheel ( dmf ) failed at 90,801 miles.

33 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 02/16/2011

Vibrating noise was heard from motor at idle and would stop under acceleration. Stopped vehicle and motor rattled loud. Turned motor off and it would not start. Broken springs were noted laying on undercover.

34 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 02/02/2011

I am the owner of a 2006 vw Jetta tdi sedan. I purchased the vehicle used in a private sale in 2009. By 2011 I was having numerous problems with the vehicle. The dual mass flywheel failed just after I had my car at the dealership for the timing belt service (approximate mileage 106,000). I had to have it towed (at my expense) to the dealership since it wasn't safe to drive the 130 miles. Dealership said it was a known problem but Volkswagen of America has not offered any assistance. Apparently someone has to die to get their attention. Approximate cost of repairs: $1,800. 2nd big problem is electrical. Wiring harness in the driver door failed soon after I purchased it. It started with the driver window switch not working. Then the lock/unlock button quit working. Then the interior/exterior safety lights. I have heard that it will progress to the trunk lid, the other windows, the fuel door, ect. Once again an extremely common problem due to a poor design. Once again Volkswagen of America has refused to offer assistance - the dealership quoted me just under $500 in parts and labor. Why would a harness cost $205!!! third problem is cosmetic issues. The paint is flaking off especially near the seams and at the wheel wheels. Rust formed where the paint bubbled up at two of the four wheel wheels. There is a service bulletin for paint problems in the generation before this vehicle and a 10-12 year corrosion warranty that vw refuses to honor. Additionally, problems with poor manufacturing practices and materials abound in this vehicle. The headliner pulls away from the pillars at the seams in the rear due to defective materials. It will separate from the roof and become a hanging visibility hazard. The plastic dash pieces don't fit together - shrinking and pulling away at the seams. Stereo buttons (as well as door switches) bubble and flake off.

35 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 02/02/2011

The dual mass flywheel has failed on my car. If this would have happened at high speed it could cause the transmission and engine to seize thus locking the front wheels and causing loss of control/serious vehicle damage. There is widespread information about this on the internet documenting the failures, some of which have destroyed the vehicles transmission and engine in the process. Volkswagen of America is aware of this problem and has issued a recall in europe but refuses to do anything about it in the us. I am forced to replace this part myself since vw will not cover this part despite the fact that they now have an upgraded replacement part as they know the original is defective.
