1 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 01/03/2022

My car been fine and went to take my daughter to school and shut the car off and get back in to go home and wouldn't start and the abs light came on and check engine light as well. I am concerned because I think since I have done the abs no longer then 2 years. I feel like there is a problem and dont think vw fix it the first time when I took it in. . My fiance had a terrible accident 12 month ago and no income and I dont know how we are going to fix it if we have too thats what I am worried about as well. . Thank you, dawn.

2 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 04/02/2021

While driving at highway speeds of 65mph, instrument cluster indicated stop! oil pressure engine off! and car went into limp. Was able to maintain control of vehicle and pulled over to side of exit. Vehicle had to be towed from highway to repair shop. Diagnosed to be a failure in the hex drive bit from the balance shaft module to the oil pump. Also caused turbocharger failure due to lack of oil flow. Car has been maintained to required schedule and had no prior indications of imminent failure.

3 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 06/14/2019

3 weeks after purchasing my pre-owned vehicle in may 2019, smoke started pouring out of the engine on my way to work. I had my car towed to a shop and was told the cause of the issue was broken engine hose clamps. The shop charged me almost $700 for brand new hose assemblies and clamps. Also, my transmission is slipping intermittently and I do not feel safe driving this vehicle.

4 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 09/21/2018

Takata recall. Car hesitates to speed up, abs light come up some time and go off. Light cover all the signal p r n d s when the gear lever is on drive (d).

5 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 05/17/2018

Tl the contact owns a 2009 Volkswagen Jetta. The contact stated that the electrical system failed and most of the warning indicators on the instrument panel illuminated. In addition, the instrument cluster panel was faulty. The vehicle leaked fuel and the power steering was faulty. The entire electrical system constantly failed. The vehicle was towed to crown Volkswagen of lawrence (3400 iowa st, lawrence, KS 66046, (785) 838-7750) where it was diagnosed that the internal module in the transmission failed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 148,376.

6 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 05/18/2017

Takata recall. In February of 2017 my check engine light came on and was accompanied by a series of 3 beeps. As I continued to drive more lights came on and my dash board looked like a christmas tree ex. Airbag, oil, check engine, abs, epc, brake light, etc. When driving on the high way my gauges will shut off and I can not see how fast I am going, my car will decelerate with my foot on the gas at random times on the high way. I look my car in for repair to cars auto in las vegas because my car could not pass smog. They did an analysis and informed me that my abs module was shot and there was an active recall for the device. I took it to my local vw dealership and thought with my safety in concern that this would be a simple fix. Instead, they informed me that I would need to make an appointment and come back another day but I refused to drive my car off the lot. They took my car to the back and said that my abs module was not communicating with the computer and that I would need to pay $700 to have a diagnostic done before they would replace my abs. If the abs is faulty as explained in recall #16v913 under vw action 45f2 if the abs fails to pass the test then it will be replaced free of charge. They seem to not be complying and giving me the run around.

7 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 12/04/2016

The car was driven a short 7 miles and parked for 2. 5 hours in 28°f weather. Upon starting to return the smell of fuel was noticeable. Upon driving the smell did not dissipate and seemed quite intense. The vehicle was stopped after about ½ mile of slow in-town travel and on a hunch the top engine cover was removed. Fuel was found to be all over the top of the engine in the area of the injector lines. The recall work (11v490000) for these lines was done years ago. The car is currently at the dealership awaiting evaluation but I can't help wonder if their recall work was not fully successful at preventing the fuel leak it was meant to.

8 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 06/30/2016

At 140k miles 2009 volkswagon Jetta tdi stalled out in middle of intersection. Towed to dealer and diagnostics revealed p0191-fuel pressure sensor implausibleand p0087-fuel rail system pressure too low. Volkswagen will not fix due to emissions recall of my vehicle and over warranty. Volkswagen knows this is a defect with the diesel engine and won't fix it.

9 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 06/19/2016

Vehicle stalled without warning while traveling out of state in 118 degree weather near phoenix. Stall occurred just as we were turning back onto the highway after stopping to check the map. Check engine light came on and engine would crank but not start. Towed to nearest dealer who diagnosed hpfp failure known to occur with vw tdi engines.

10 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 03/15/2016

The vehicle is part of the vw tdi emissions scandal. The vehicle currently needs a dpf which is one of the parts affected by the emissions scandal and one that will eventually need to be replaced for the car to meet/pass emissions. Vw should pay for this expensive repair now.

11 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 02/21/2016

We have been having an issue with the engine stalling out while driving. It started with the epc light coming on several months ago, but the light does not stay on and there has been no consistency to the occurrences. However, now, the car will stay running for long and stalls out shortly after starting. The epc comes on sometimes, but not every time that is stalls out. Today I took the car for a drive around the block, as soon as I got it back home, it stalled out. From that point on the car would not stay running for more than 15 seconds.

12 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 02/09/2016

Engine fire in motion on the highway cause unknown.

13 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 01/03/2016

This is for a 2009 vw Jetta tdi. The tdi of course has been involved with vw adjusting software to cover up nox emissions on several year models of their diesel 2. 0 engines. What also needs to be looked at is the high number of failures involving the diesel particulate filter (dpf) units. It could be the software hat has been churning out wrong emissions readings could have possibly overtaxed the soot collection in this vehicles as well. I would suggest someone from your office peruse forums at tdiclub and other tdi sites to see the number of these units that have been reported by members. I have not had the failure as of yet, but wanted to bring this to your attention.

14 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 12/03/2015

Driving of freeway & sudden loss of power. Car died on the offramp & unable to start. Glow plug light & battery light illuminated. Towed to local shop expecting an alternator repair. They diagnosed hpfp failure. $5500 repair!! this is a known issue & should have been a recall! I received a warranty extension (10yr or 120,000mi) letter June 2015. My vehicle is 2009 with 155k miles at that time. My vehicle has depreciated due to the emission system & now this.

15 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 12/03/2015

While driving on a city street, my car began to make a rumbling sound, followed by a engine warning message turning on. Within a minute, my car died and would not restart. We towed our 2009 vw Jetta sportwagen tdi to a vw specialized mechanic who confirmed that there were metal shavings in the fuel system that seems to be resulting from a hpfp failure. Mileage was at 131769 at time of failure. (outside of the extended warranty time period for the hpfp issue) 12/21/2012 two faulty rear passenger seat belts were replaced. Airbags had not been deployed and car had not been in an accident prior to seat belts breaking.

16 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 10/19/2015

Driving home when exiting off to the hwy my Jetta will flash the abs, brake and esc lights while beeping. Took car to mechanic it was relayed that the abs module was bad. I refuse to take car to vw dealer because I already have issues with them about the erc valve and diesel fuel particulate filter (engine light constantly stays on) being 1 of the issues vw has admitted being faulty but still not doing anything about it. To get the abs fixed it's going to be over $2500 and the have the erc & diesel fuel particulate filter fixed is over $3000. Each of these items are faulty and should be taken care of by the dealer with a cent paid from my pocket. Both are life threatening faults that eventually could lead to my death or deaths of others. I have no choice as this is my sole source of transportation so I have to drive it. Even though vw admits fault they are doing nothing to help except for offering "consolation" gifts - none will cover cost to fix car and get myself and others out of danger. Vw needs to be held responsible.

17 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 10/02/2015

Engine light came on, I had my mechanic do a 120,000 mile service and diagnose the dash engine light and the intake manifold was replaced. When I picked the car up I smelled diesel. I drove it 13 miles, when I got home I smelled diesel again. I opened the hood and there was diesel all over the left engine side. There was a wet, split fuel line, leaking fluid in the parking lot, a blue plastic set small rings (like the olympic symbol) sat near the split hose. It could have caused a fire, and other cars to be in danger from slick road, among other things.

18 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 08/24/2015

Engine stalled when driving and would not restart. Metal fragments were found in the entire fuel system damaging all components. Complete fuel system replacement is only alternative per Volkswagen of America. Contacted Volkswagen customer assistance and was told assistance is not an option due to a federal mandate limiting time and mileage to 10 years or 120000 miles. Also stated Volkswagen would have been able to repair at their discretion if not for the federal government regulations?? this is a very common failure that local dealer states occurs locally 4-5 times a week in this area. The average repair cost is over 6000. 00 dollars. I have been told the NHTSA had investigated this situation and closed the probe. If dealer records were investigated thoroughly, they would have found a tremendous number of like failures that cannot all be attributed to improper fueling or tainted product. 4-5 times a week since 2009?? absurd and unacceptable.

19 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 08/23/2015

Stopped and left the line at a green light when our 2009 Jetta tdi sputtered and stopped in the middle of a busy intersection. Was able to get the vehicle towed to a local vw dealership and given an invoice for $5500 for the high pressure pump, which is identified a known issue by vw under a self-imposed extended warranty but never under a recall. As I was told by vw customer service, since there was never a catastrophic issue to our vehicle prior to 120k miles, instead at 124k miles, the safety items were not identified and corrected.

20 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 08/14/2015

Driving down the road at 35 mph the car suddenly dies, leaving me no power to escape a possible accident, brakes are hard to use, stuck in a traffic lane with cars coming up on me at 35 to 45 mph, turns out the hpfp exploded sending metal thru out the fuel system causing the engine to starve for fuel and stall out, with no fuel getting to the engine the motor wont restart causing a life threatening situation.

21 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 07/21/2015

Was driving and there was a loss of power, as if the turbo had stopped working, it eventually stalled out.

22 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 11/18/2014

For the past year or so my 2009 Jetta tdi (diesel) has had the same reoccurring problem: my glow plug light will come on and I lose normal driving capabilities. I cannot accelerate or maintain speed as I normally do. My car will remain around 25 mph, sometimes losing power until I am forced to pull over. My solution has been to turn the car off, and back on again. The light will go off and I can drive normally most of the time. Sometimes I have to leave the car off for a period of time to regain standard driving capabilities. It has been about 2 weeks since that has happened. 2 days ago, my engine light came on. I took it to the dealer and they pulled codes p0087 and p0088 (fuel pressure too high and fuel pressure too low at the same time). They want me to replace the fuel rail, which will be an estimated $1000 in total parts/labor. I called another dealer in hopes of getting a better price and they are put off by the first dealer's recommendations. I was told there is no evidence of metal in my fuel system but even so, other dealer thinks this will be more serious than just replacing the rail. After researching I am beginning to think that I am experiencing the beginning of hpfp failure. I feel like I am driving a ticking time bomb and I'm not sure what to do! replacing the fuel rail feels like a quick, expensive and inefficient solution to a bigger problem. I contacted Volkswagen customer care and I was told that I will receive a call from a regional agent about my situation tomorrow.

23 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 07/21/2014

Driving on my way home from work in town and all of a sudden the glow plug light comes on flashing and the engine light appears on the dash. I immediately turned off the car restarted the car and the problem was not resolved and a message appeared on the sash "engine fault workshop!". Hpfp failure.

24 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 07/17/2014

Was turning right onto a backroad, shifting from gears 1 to gear 2 hitting 22 mph. Lost all acceleration, had to pull over and turn vehicle off, smell of smoke but no visual, let vehicle sit, checked oil, coolants, all perfect. Smell went away, attempted to start vehicle with hood open, checked engine with vehicle on, movement of 1-2 inches from engine rocking severely. Turned vehicle off, towed to dealership.

25 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 06/29/2014

Driving in the neighborhood when all of a sudden car's rpm's go super high. I turn off the vehicle and it wouldn't start again. Had it towed to vw dealer who has diagnosed problem as full fuel system blow out/failure. I am the original owner. No problems previously and no symptoms of fuel system problems prior to this incident.

26 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 05/16/2014

The car began to flash the "glow plug" warning light along with a message "engine fault workshop" pulled to the side of the road and attempted to restart. Engine would crank but not turn over. Got the following failure codes: p0087, p13e3, p2196. Looks like this is a common issue and yet vw does nothing about it. Class action anyone?.

27 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 04/21/2014

I got a warning light on the instrument panel indicating "diesel particulate filter. " after a few minutes, I got another warning light indicating an overheat in the exhaust system. I immediately took the car to the dealer. I was presented with a bill for $6,800. I have never heard of that problem in vw's, so I would hope someone would look into it. Everyone who buys a vw diesel should know that a potential exists that a clogged filter would result in a $6,800 repair.

28 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 12/09/2013

The contact owns a 2009 Volkswagen Jetta. The contact stated that while traveling various speeds, the vehicle suddenly lost acceleration power. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was found that the diesel fuel injector number one had failed. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was contacted about the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 156,000.

29 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 09/14/2013

Left the wal-mart parking lot and the car stalled while driving. Lucky no one was behind us. Tried to restart but the car would not start. Had a tow truck take it to our home. My husband read the trouble code "000135 - fuel rail/system pressure p0087 - 000 - too low" looked it up on the internet and found this is caused by the hpfp malfunctioning. Nhtsa has a current investigation ongoing on this issue, I hope you can help, this could have been very dangerous, as my daughter was supposed to take the car to college this weekend and this could have happened on the highway or in orlando city traffic. We have had diesel cars since 1998, 2 other tdis and my husbands truck is a diesel, we fuel them at sam's club unless we are on the road, there has not been any accidental fuel mix ups. Please let me know if I can be of further assistance.

30 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2013

This issue has been happening in my Jetta tdi for over a year, and so far my mechanic has been unable to figure out the cause. I hear a ding and the glow plug light begins flashing, and on the small screen I see "engine fault - workshop" once. The car sometimes seems to lose power or go into "limp mode" but sometimes there is no affect on how it drives. When I pull over and turn off the car, then turn it back on, the error is gone and the car drives fine. This has happened more & more frequently, almost always when I'm driving on the highway. It now happens at least every other week or so. After doing some research I see that this is a pretty common problem for Jetta tdis, and it seems that vw needs to do something about it! the last time I had my car in the shop for it, another check engine light had come on, and that was fixed, but this issue was not because my mechanic couldn't replicate the problem. Now that I've done more research I am calling my mechanic in the morning.

31 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 07/13/2013

We were driving down the road when our car sputtered once and then died. We coasted into a parking lot and tried to crank it again. It sputtered once and died again. Then we were unable to get it restarted. This was on a Saturday afternoon. Monday morning we had it towed to a certified independent repair shop. They diagnosed it as a fuel system failure. There was metal shavings in the fuel system. He indicated that repairs would cost six thousand. He had to replace all the fuel components. It was three weeks to repair it. The final cost ended up being $5688. 17. The vehicle has never had gas put it in. We were always very particular about where we purchased diesel fuel.

32 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 05/24/2013

2009 Jetta sportwagen tdi hpfp failure and fuel system contamination. Failure of hpfp sends metal particles throughout fuel system via fuel return lines. This is serious and expensive issue to repair. Vw did acknowledge issue with hpfp and repaired at their expense.

33 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 02/25/2013

I was coming to a stop off a highway off ramp. My car died while coming to the stop. This has happened before and I've taken it to the dealership several times for this and stalling out while accelerating from a complete stop, and I was told there was nothing wrong. Today the car would not stay started after starting 8 times. I started from p and n, but once I put the car in d or s it would immediately shut down. Putting the car in r made a huge clunk. I was stuck and blocking a huge line of traffic! I am going to the dealer to find out what's going wrong, but this is unacceptable for any car to die for no reason.

34 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 01/16/2013

I was making a left turn entering north bound traffic on greenfield road south of baseline road on Wednesday January 16, 2013. Traffic was very heavy and upon entering traffic the engine suddenly began to loose power, run very rough. It seems like all of the dash warning lights flashed several times before the engine completely died. After the engine died, I lost power steering and was unable to safely negotiate my way to the side of the road. I was almost struck two times before I was able to coast into a parking lot on east side of greenfield road. The repair of the vehicle is currently underway. The failure was due to the high pressure injector pump failing, creating metal shavings that clogged and contaminating the entire fuel system. The car has 104,000 miles on it and there was no prior indication of fuel system problems. The failure was catastrophic. There was no other contamination of the fuel .

35 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 01/15/2013

Driving at steady speed of around 20 mph when suddenly speed and rpms decreased with glowplug light flashing. Noticed a loss of power. Car would pick up speed very slowly. Did not force engine in any way. 5 minutes later the car died. Tried starting car back up but would not start. Had it towed to known local mechanic shop. Was told it was a fuel system issue in which the filters and injectors were being clogged up therefore damaging the entire fuel system, which was a known common problem in tdis that Volkswagen did not acknowldge, and repairs would cost around $6k-7k to replace the whole fuel system. Very unhappy with this situation and disappointed with Volkswagen at the fact that nothing has been done to help the customers that drive their vehicles considering the amount of complaints regarding this issue.
