1 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 01/28/2024

I recently bought a 2011 Volkswagen Jetta tdi last owner wasn't aware of recalls, car started throwing white smoke, my local service mecanics northwest express auto care let me know that the problem is a recall on emission need to fix but dealer don't want to do it.

2 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 05/05/2022

The car turns off while driving and it has put me in several safety problems that I feel could an accident.

3 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2022

It's the transmission when the mph needle just bob's constantly, when sometime up to 60 mph the rps stays above the three for at least 15 sec before sometimes going down others have to push the gas pedal fast to shift gears. Constant thud sound from the motor and more condensation then should be coming from tailpipe. The odor coming from the air vents is absolutely nauseating.

4 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 08/12/2021

Car randomly stalls while driving and shuts off without warning in the middle of the road. Immediately is able to turn back on without issues. Took to mechanic and they couldn't find any issues and said the car had zero error codes. This has happened multiple times while driving low speeds, usually when driving stop and go with street lights.

5 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 05/24/2021

This Jetta sportwagen tdi is one of the "diesel gate" vehicles that was supposedly fixed. However, post fix, the vehicle has been at the dealership for repairs more than it has been on the road for various emissions related issues revolving around the exhaust gas recirculation system and diesel particulate filter. Vehicle is washed regularly, including scrubbing of the chaise pipe ends with heavy duty soot cleaning solution. Vehicle takes less than a week to collect enough soot on the tailpipe to cause transference to finger when whipped. This is an indication that an excessive amount of soot is not being properly recirculated by the exhaust gas recirculating system to be rebut in the diesel particulate filter. This also indicates that the "fix" for the cheating emissions system is not doing its job and vehicle is likely emitting particulate and nox at levels far above legal limits.

6 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 05/12/2021

My car would randomly stall while driving, happens both when braking and not braking. When it stalls steering wheel locks up, cannot press gas pedal, and brakes stop working almost. This is incredibly dangerous because while on a road at 50mph+ and my car suddenly stops it can cause a serious accident. The dealer has been able to reproduce it multiple times, and has said it is a common problem. The only warning light that switched on was the battery light after it had stalled. Currently at the vw dealership and was told that it was the fuel filter, was not the problem and car continued to stall more. Not only was a good part replaced but created an even more dangerous situation than before.

7 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2020

After driving for 1 hour or more on the highway, the car does not have the power to accelerate when driving at slower speeds and loses control of the speed. After driving 3 hours or more, the car will do the same while still on the highway. The car is not able to maintain speed in heavy traffic and becomes immediately dangerous.

8 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2019

The car randomly stalls!!! this has happened several times and the dealer says nothing is wrong because there are no codes. This is so dangerous and I do not feel safe driving it. Twice the car stalled when sitting at a stop light and once when I was driving on the city street. It will restart after I let it sit. It also stutters/jumps and DE excellerates.

9 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2019

I have a 2011 Jetta se 2. 5l auto pzev and when I turned on the car outside from my house, the check engine light turned on with no reason. I passed the scanner and threw the code p0106. The car would drive well, but when I release the brake and press gas, the car wouldn't react right away, it would accelerate slowly and kick-in I second gear. Then the gears indicator (prnd123) disappears. I changed the map sensor and works good for 3 or 4 day. After this the problem returns. I saw a technical bulletin from Volkswagen company and this bulletin says that the car needs an update programming. I called to my concessionary and they says that I must to pay, first for the diagnosis, and second for this update. I have been investigating about this trouble and too many owners of Volkswagen vehicles presents this fault, including USA and mexico. I guess that Volkswagen must correct this problem with no charge. Attached the technical bulletin 2034012 from Volkswagen.

10 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 07/26/2019

Vw Jetta 2011 has been dying when idling, in park and while decelerating. It will be stopped at a stop sign or red light and just lose power. It has to then be put in park and the key must be turned to come back on. This also happens when coming to a stop. Recently, it happened coming off the highway going 45 mph. Car had to coast and the brakes were ridden to a stop where car had to be turned back on. Dealership has allegedly replaced issues with the epc light coming on, timing belt and fell pump. The problem persists. Thousands have been spent on this issue and the car keeps dying. It currently has 115k miles on it. There is also an issue when pumping gas at a gas station. Every time the car is filled up, it will not stay the first time turning the key. The gas pedal must be pressed a number of time for the engine to turn over and then the gas pedal must be pumped to keep the engine on. Randomly dying on the highway, on city streets and in intersection is very dangerous and will result in damage to cars, injuries and deaths.

11 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 04/20/2016

Driving on the highway and the glow plug indicator light starts flashing with a lose of power. The vehicle stalls but luckily while exiting freeway. The Jetta was towed to dealer where it was determined hpfp failure and the whole fuel system needs to be replaced. The car was not fixed ($6000) as it was past the warranty by 1000 miles.

12 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 09/06/2015

While driving on the freeway, the diesel coil light started flashing and our vehicle lost power. We pulled off of the road, the vehicle stalled, so we had the vehicle towed to the dealership. Dealership determined it was a fuel system failure(metal in the system) and sent the fuel to be tested. Test result said insufficient lubricant in fuel, therefore repairs not covered under extended warranty. Dealership informed us that we needed to be using "toptier" diesel. We researched this (having never been told this before) and realized we had purchased diesel from a "toptier" listed station (shell). Dealership told us to make a claim with our insurance company since it was an "outside influence" that caused the failure. Insurance company is investigating whether or not this is a valid claim.

13 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 08/27/2015

The car , 2011 vw Jetta tdi, stalled while driving on the highway for the third time. This is third repair to the high pressure fuel system. Metal debris were found per dealer. The second time was approx 1 1/2 yrs ago while my wife was driving on the freeway with 2 kids. The first time was approx 3 yrs ago.

14 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 08/14/2015

Manual transmission tdi sportwagen. Driving 30 mph in 4th gear. Flashing glow plug warning light went on. Vehicle lost power and speed. Attempted to downshift. Engine immediately shut off and rpm went immediately to 0. Lost power steering and brakes. Did not have enough speed to bring vehicle to curb. Vehicle stopped at intersection and had to be towed. Dealer diagnosed as hpfp failure.

15 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 07/04/2015

Tl-the contact owns a 2011 Volkswagen Jetta. The contact stated while driving 40 mph, the vehicle made a jerking motion, the check engine warning indicator illuminated, and the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was restarted, but the failure recurred. The was taken to a dealer for diagnostic testing. The mechanic stated that the fuel injector system failed. Four injectors, fuel rings, ignition coil, and wires was replaced. The contact stated that the windshield wipers failed to operate. The vehicle was taken to a dealer and it was diagnosed that the windshield wiper motor failed. The windshield wiper motor was replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 38,000. Mf.

16 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 04/09/2015

Hpfp catastrophic failure started vehicle and while driving experienced loss of power. Diesel glow plug illuminated and mfd message read "service now". Stalled at traffic light and would not restart. Towed to vw of corpus christi the next day. Vw repaired at their cost. Never fueled with anything but diesel. Repair ticket indicated that 'diesel looked ok". I was fortunate that this did not occur at highway speed. I believe that the complaint was closed too early by the NHTSA and is not due to misfueling as you have been convinced by vw but rather a design flaw in the hpfp. I have lost confidence in this brand and the NHTSA due to this issue.

17 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 02/08/2015

Was driving our 2011 Jetta sportwagen tdi 25 mph and check engine light and engine heater light were flashing. Car went into safe mode with very little throttle control. Took to dealer and was told a catastrophic fuel system failure occurred and the entire fuel system needs to be replaced. Found other car owners online have had similar issues. It is being covered under warranty but if this is an on going problem should be addressed. This would be a huge expense over $6,000. 00 if not under warranty.

18 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 01/20/2015

The contact owns a 2011 Volkswagen Jetta. While driving at 65 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. The contact merged to the right side of the road and restarted the vehicle. The failure recurred three times. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the number two and three fuel injectors were faulty and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 105,000.

19 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 01/06/2015

I had driven the car earlier that day (about 40 miles) with no problems. I got home at about 7:30pm and parked the car outside our house. At about 2am, I heard a beeping car horn. I looked outside and saw flames coming out of the front drivers side of our beautiful 2011 Jetta sportwagen. I dialed 911, the car continued to burn until the fire dept arrived and put it out. The car is a total loss. I'm only happy it wasn't parked inside a garage where the fire would have destroyed our house as well. No work had been done on the car recently and no aftermarket options were installed. I have only one question - what could cause a completely cold car (not driven in over 6 hours) to suddenly burst into flame?? thank you.

20 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 12/04/2014

While driving, the hpfp pump failed. The glow plug light came on, started to blink, the car went into fail safe mode, and then died. All took place within 6 minutes on a highway. Car taken to dealer and confirmed that the hpfp failed and sent metal debris into the fuel system which contaminated all other fuel system components (pumps, lines, filters, housings, injectors, etc. ) vw customer care provided excellent support during repairs which required replacing all components in the fuel system. This is being reported for tracking purposes.

21 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 11/30/2014

Driving down the highway at about 55mph, started switching lanes and stepped on the gas to accelerate. The car sputtered and the engine vibrated. The car felt like I was going to stall driving in the high-speed lane. The yellow check engine light came on and epc light started flashing. Swerving back into the lower speed lane I couldn't even keep the car at 55mph. I had to pull over on the highway to see if I could make sense of it. After turning off the car and then back on, the lights went off and the car was fine. I took it too the mechanic and they said they couldn't find anything wrong after $85. 00 diagnostic. The car ran fine for 2 days until the same exact thing happened while driving on the highway again. This occurred on and off intermittently about every 1-2 days for about 2 weeks. Three trips to the mechanic within those 2 weeks and with each visit there was a computer connected to the car and a full systems diagnostic reported that there was nothing wrong with the car. It became dangerous for me to drive the car and even more so to drive it on the highway. After the second week the lights finally came on and stayed on and the problem was diagnosed as the engine misfiring in 2 of the cylinders. The mechanic changed with the ignition coil on 12/15. 2014. The engine ran completely fine without any issues until last week, 3/19/2015. At 3 months and only 28,000 miles on the car the same problem started to reoccur while getting onto the highway and attempting to accelerate from 40-45mph. It started just as it did before intermittently and about 2 weeks later the engine and epc lights were on permanently again. After the mechanic confirmed that it was the same issue with the same component we changed the same part again. I am expecting to be changing it again in 3 more months, if I still have the car.

22 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 11/03/2014

November 2014 incidents: two incidents of failing to start. First incident: car failed to start once and started on second try. Second incident: car several times failed to start & engine made clanking noise. Had car towed to vw agency. Car started after unloaded from tow truck and agency found nothing wrong. December 2014 incident: car started, but after slowly driving to parking lot exit and before at full stop, at engine quit and would not restart. I put the car in neutral and backed down a slight grade to get car out of traffic; after coming to a stop the car started up.

23 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 09/20/2014

Driving on I-5 southbound in our 2011 vw Jetta tdi; my car dropped horse power and the glow plug light started blinking. The car did not shut off, but the horse power was cut significantly. We stopped at the next interchange 6 miles away and called vw. They said it should be looked at and scheduled an appointment for the next Monday. I turned the car off. It restarted and the glow plug light was not on. Car functioned normally on the drive home (35 miles). I took the car to the dealership on Monday and they ran some tests. The hpfp on the engine was out. It sounds like it is a known issue. It is covered by my 60 power train warranty. But my car only has 34,000 miles. It sounds like there are quite a few issues on this type of tdi with the hpfp. Is this something the ntsb will be investigating?.

24 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 09/08/2014

Driving the car at freeway speeds prior to taking the exit. When we took the exit, there was a sudden loss of power and the vehicle would not go over 1000 rpm. The vehicle was limped to the shoulder where it died and would not restart. Vehicle was towed to the mechanic shop where they are in the process of repairs. The vw is equipped with a 2. 0l tdi engine and I have read multiple other reports of the same issues occurring involving the hpfp failing.

25 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 05/14/2014

I was in the drive thru of mc donalds then came a terrible rattle from under the car, 10 seconds later the car turned off. Turned it back on and glow plug light was flashing parked the car immediately. Turned it back on and had little to no power then came to a halt, tried to turn it back on and would not start. Had it towed to vw there looking at it I'm waiting on a response. This is not supposed to happen this early. I always had it serviced at the dealer. On time. Help us!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! from the other complaints my stress has hit a limit. If it costs 10k to fix. Then I could of bought a BMW or whatever. 24k + 10k = 34k I'm sad :(.

26 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 03/08/2014

The high pressure fuel system failed in our car when we were on a one lane highway. 'engine control malfunction' light started flashing and suddenly our car was stalled. When we looked in the manual it said to get the car to a vw dealership ASAP. We had to hold up traffic until the car was finally towed. Not only that, we were on vacation in the different city and this happened during the weekend when the service centers are closed. After a painful 2 days we just found out that out high pressure fuel system has broken again. It was last replaced in April 2013 and it was exactly the same situation. This is a really big structural damage and happened with no fault on our side. The last one cost up to $10k, which vw covered due to warranty. However, it is also a safety hazzard since we could have easily gotten into an accident. After having gone through this twice, we no longer feel safe driving the tdi and strongly feel that the car should be recalled.

27 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 09/19/2013

High pitched whine, sudden stall at hwy speed. The fuel light and service engine now light came on. The vehicle would not run and required a tow to the dealership. I was notified it would be a $5000+ repair and the hpfp failed requiring the entire fuel system to be replaced.

28 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 07/18/2013

I was passing a semi and needed to accelerate to get out of the way of car to my rear. . . Depressed the accelerator and no response. Two days later experienced similar event at low speed (30 mph).

29 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 06/16/2013

The contact owns a 2011 Volkswagen Jetta wagon. The contact stated that while driving 75 mph, the coil light illuminated. The vehicle then stalled and the contact smelled fuel inside the vehicle. The contact pulled over and exited to inspect the vehicle. The contact then noticed a fuel leak on the ground and on the engine. The vehicle was towed to a dealer but was neither diagnosed nor repaired. The failure mileage was 35,000.

30 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 06/11/2013

2011 Volkswagen tdi Jetta. Came to a three way light, the light changed, I hit the gas and the car died. I was in the turn lane at the bottom of a hill at a busy intersection. I tried several times to restart to no avail. No engine codes or error messages. Had the vehicle towed to the dealership where they found metal shavings in the fuel filter. Parts are being ordered and the fuel system is being replaced. Waiting to hear when the parts are in and the work is competed.

31 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 04/10/2013

The high pressure fuel system failed in our car when we were on a busy city street. 'engine control malfunction' light started flashing and suddenly our car was stalled. When we looked in the manual it said to get the car to a vw dealership ASAP. We had to hold up traffic until the car was finally towed. Not only that, this happened during late night around 10 pm and all the service centers were closed. After a painful 2 days we just found out that out high pressure fuel system had to be replaced. This is a big structural damage with the car and I no longer feel safe owning or driving it.

32 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 03/27/2013

While driving down the highway at 70 mph the engine lost power and coasted to a stop on the side of the highway with several lights on the dash flashing and it appears from research on the internet this is a common problem that the hpfp quits and the car will not accelerate. The motor is a diesel tdi.

33 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 03/16/2013

The contact owns a 2011 Volkswagen Jetta. The contact stated that while driving 70 mph and applying the brakes in an attempt to avoid another motorist, the vehicle stalled without warning. The vehicle was towed to a dealer for diagnosis. The contact was informed that the fuel injector line would need to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified but offered no assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 33,000.

34 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 05/11/2012

My 2011 vw Jettas high pressure fuel system stopped working and the car will not start. The dealer said that is was caused by the fuel. The repairs are well over $8000. I understand that NHTSA is looking into this problem because it has happened to so many other vw diesel Jetta cars. I have now talked to over 15 people in my area that have had the same issue with the fuel system. I own numerous other diesel trucks that fill up at the same filling station and have not had this problem. Please do something about a recall so this is covered by vw. I can see if this problems was just a few cars, but the tdi web site lists thousands of cars that this has happened to.

35 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 01/02/2012

Approximately a year ago, my engine began to give a clear sense of the car shuddering or rocking back and forth. While sometimes the feeling would occur even when stopped at a light, the vast majority of the time this occurred while I was driving at consistent low speeds. In almost all cases, I was attempting to maintain a consistent speed around either 13pmh or 30 mph. Eventually, I found the rocking motion very easy to reproduce. I'd set the car to 30 mph via cruise control and drive down a straight road with very slight upward and downward slopes. While it happens even on flat ground, I found that a slight decline is most likely to reproduce the feeling. My best guess is that there's something about the way the fuel supply system/transmission is trying to determine whether or not diesel needs to be supplied to the engine. The fuel supply system seems to almost cut out because giving diesel would produce a speed too high, and then it comes back on suddenly, because giving it no diesel would cause the car to slow too much. While sometimes this is simply a nuisance, I have had on many occasions felt that it was a genuine safety hazard since I couldn't predict how the engine would react. This in combination with overly strong engine break when letting off of the accelerator and delayed acceleration when stepping on the peddle that can cause inconsistencies and safety hazards when maneuvering in stop and go traffic on the highway. I've mentioned this problem every single time I've taken my car in for it's regularly scheduled maintenance. The vehicle has a diesel dsg engine, and as I've been told by service technicians and representatives, some of the things like strong engine breaking are associated with this type of engine. However, the car's rocking motion certainly goes beyond anything that could realistically be considered normal and safe.
