Door locks intermittently fail to lock or unlock, either by the key fob button or door panel lock/unlock switch. I believe this is a safety issue as it may impede access to the vehicle in the event of an accident.

The contact owns a 2009 Volkswagen Jetta. While exiting the vehicle, all four doors locked without intention. The engine remained on, and a child was positioned in the rear of the vehicle. She attempted to access the vehicle with the key fob and manually. The key failed to unlock the door. She had to break the passenger window to open the door. The vehicle was in the process of being repaired. The failure and current mileages were 12,000. The VIN was unavailable.

The trunk of my 2006 Volkswagen Jetta turbo will randomly open while driving and/or parked. This has happened while I have been driving on several occasion blocking the visibility from my rear view mirror. The trunk will also close, however, the car/dashboard recognizes the trunk as being open; disabling the ability to opening the trunk with the keyless entry and within the car. I notice this issue usually occurs more frequently when the weather is colder.

This vehicle was purchased approximately September 2008, and to date has experienced five (5) failures of the electronic door locking/unlocking mechanisms of three of the four doors of the vehicle and in some case multiple failures. I am currently experiencing failure number six (6). The failure of the locking/unlocking mechanisms is a safety issue as these failure have at time prevented being able to exit the vehicle and in the case of an emergency it is a serious threat to my safety. Additionally, I'm unable to lock the vehicle whenever I go anywhere thus putting anything in the vehicle at risk of loss from theft. The dealer's solution is to replace the locking mechanisms as they fail and as the vehicle is no longer under warranty it's cost roughly $370. 00 per incident. Below is a summary of the failures experienced thus far. I have copies of the service records available. 2008 Jetta door lock failures:

2000 Volkswagen Jetta GLS vr6 automatically locks after unlocking it with the keyless entry remote. It happens intermittently but over the past few weeks the occurrences are becoming a lot closer. I was seating my two children when this happened luckily my key was in hand when the doors locked. I feel this is something vw corp should look into as I've seen several more postings as time has progressed.

This vehicle design allows for poor rear visibility in general; however, it is amplified in low light situations with the combination of high rear head rests, a glare on the back glass from the third brake light, and if you have a rear spoiler this makes for a really bad combination. Nighttime visibility in a Jetta is the equivalence of wearing a blind fold. Oh and the salesman neglected to mention that the all weather package included a trunk that will not shut or stay shut in cold weather. Even the replacement latches need replacing. Vw is making big bucks on the consumer hoping to save a few dollars with fuel economy. Vw not only fails to address or acknowledge the defects with these vehicles, but to exacerbate the situation they attempt to lock you -the consumer into their monopoly, for example:keyless remotes in which the batteries are only replaceable by vw dealers, a synthetic vw oil, a very costly trunk latch, that with my experience you end up replacing annually. . . The list goes on. Whatever happened to old fashioned customer service? to sum it up my Jetta has alot of bugs. . . Not to worry, I'm sure vw has patented the pesticide, just hope I'm able to afford that-can use the money I'm saving in fuel economy.
My 2000 Jetta is locking and arming automatically. Recently, I opened my passenger door (driver's side) and put my 3 month old baby in her car seat. When I shut the door and reached to open the driver's door the doors locked and armed. Thankfully I had my keys in my hand and was able to quickly unlock and get into my car, but I shudder to think what could have happened to my child if it had been a hot summer day and I couldn't get into my car quickly enough. This has happened several times (intermittently) within the last two months. When I contacted my local dealerships service department I was told that the problem is a faulty door latch and that this is a common problem with vw cars. This was upsetting not only because my child could have been hurt, but because I had just replaced another door latch just prior to the birth of my child. I?m not sure why the service department didn't check the other door latches at that time, but I think that should be standard practice as these can become dangerous if unfixed. Until I can afford the $400 to fix the door latch (or buy a new car at this point) I no longer lock my doors or use my remote in order to prevent this from happening again. However, even if service department replaces my door latch I am not confident that this will not happen again. In talking to people who have serviced vw cars I have learned that this is a recurring problem. I understand that car parts stop working at some point; however what they should not do is turn the car into potential death trap. It is frightening to think that my child could become trapped in my car because of this problem. I also don?t feel that simply replacing the door latch with another possible faulty door latch will fix this problem or restore my confidence as a vw driver. As a parent I want to feel secure that the car I drive will be safe for my family. I feel that this issue requires further attention from vw and the us department of transportation.
My trunk has never closed properly from the day I drove it off the lot. I took the vehicle back within a few weeks to be repaired. They did not have the part and it took a few more weeks. When they replaced it, it still continued not to close properly. I have the old part. I also recently had an air bag default sensor come on. I have contacted them multiple times regarding this and they continue to advise that they will have to charge me a diagnosis of 97. 50 and I will have to pay for a rental if this is not covered under warranty. I have continuously had problems with this service department. I have tried to drop the vehicle off and they insist that they do not have room and will not be able to get to my vehicle for several days. These are very serious hazards that could be life threatening yet they fail to recognize the importance of their customer.
Purchased a new '09 vw Jetta sdn 2. 5 l s and the second day I had it, I had to take to service dept. The door seal from drivers door was coming off, the car would smell like burning plastic and I noticed after 3rd trip ( in 2 days ) the rear brakes were "glowing" red hot. They said they could figure it out and said it may be a plastic coating they put on brake pads to keep rust from building up on the ship overseas! after the brakes constantly squeaking and having to take my new car in 2 more time with every excuse known to man , I was mistakenly told it was a defect and they changed them at no charge. My brakes are again going out and it has only been about 6-9 months. The concern is that they have not fixed the root of the problem as well as a seat belt indicator which has been faulty. I have had them make me take it in 3 times for that ( first time they couldn't duplicate the problem, so I was told to bring it in again ) and one passenger side was replaced but it is still happening and I fear that the combined brake and seat belt/ airbag issues could be dangerous! also troubling is in the last few months the drivers side rear door would not unlock by any means for on 3 occasions (the last which I called vw service to make an appointment for and never got a return phone call) the last time it was unusable door for 2 weeks then just started working again. It has not been attended to, but my fear is again, in a accident if someone was back there they may get trapped in car.
I own a 2001 vw Jetta. I bought it 3 years ago, used from the Volkswagen dealership. The automobile was sold as a "certified" auto, which I found out later does not mean much. My trunk is locked shut and does not open manually or with remote, I've had to replace cv boots, catalytic converter, transmission and numerous headlight, taillight and blinker bulbs. And today one of my headlights is so dim, it doesn't really provide any light when it is dark. I have replaced it and replaced it. It stays fine for about 2 days and then just dims out again. I can't afford to keep taking it to Volkswagen. It's a rip off and they don't even fix anything right anyway. My engine fan went out all of the sudden the other day, causing the car to overheat. I had to get it towed. That isn't the first time I have had to pay to have it towed. The interior plastic coating on armrests and all plastic inside is peeling and looks terrible. When I push unlock all doors, the driver's side back seat door will not open unless I reach inside and pull the lock open manually. There is so much more, but I don't want to waste my time. I know nothing will happen, even though it is so obvious that these cars are complete lemons, and they need to stop selling them to people.

My trunk release will not work, with or without the remote key. I contacted vw of America and they refuse to indicate this is a defect, even though multiple complaints are found online by other vw owners.
The contact owns a 2006 Volkswagen Jetta. While driving approximately 55 mph on normal road conditions, the trunk door unlatched unexpectedly and without assistance. The driver pulled over to the side of the road, but the trunk failed to close tightly. The failure occurred intermittently and more frequently in cold weather conditions. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who stated that the failure was related to a defective latch system. The technician stated that the latch defect was a common failure with this vehicle. The failures occurred on forty separate occasions. The vehicle has not been repaired. The failure mileage was unavailable and the current mileage was 70,000.
I have a 2003 vw Jetta. On numerous occasions, when I start the car and get out to scrape the snow & ice off of the windows, the door locks engage and lock me out of the running car. Since I have just left my car to remove snow, of course my purse and cell phone are in the car, so I have to leave the locked car running while I knock on neighbors doors to call someone to bring me a spare key to my house, so I can get the spare key to my car. I have not had the locks repaired, but when I took my car to gebhardt vw in boulder for other repairs, I was told the problem is so common that the mechanics roll the windows down whenever a car comes in for service, to make sure they won't get locked out. The mechanic actually had a broken lock sitting on his desk, and showed me how the lock was supposed to work, but what it does instead.

Intermittent malfunction of rear door locks. Can't open. Reporter to dealer while under warranty. Dealer could not remedy. After warranty expired, dealer recommender service. Dealer checked and verified that the problem had been reported previously when serviced(from their records). Neftin Volkswagen, thousand oaks CA.
I drive a 2001 vw Jetta. As I opened my glove compartment today, the handle including the lock mechanism fell into my hand. It just broke off right then and there. I do not use my glove compartment often so it is not from wear and tear. My issue is that now there is a hole in my glove compartment. If someone was thinking about breaking in, this could be the deciding factor for them knowing that the glove compartment is completely accessible and at times there are valuables located in compartments as well as trigger switches to trunks and in some cases even spare keys to the car or a person's home! I do not have any of those items in the compartment, but someone could be intrigued enough to try to break in. I contacted the warranty company and Volkswagen and the most the dealership offered was 25% discount to fix it. Just not enough to ensure the safety of the car.
My 2002 vw Jetta tdi has many electrical problems. The one that might be a safety factor is the micro switches in the door latches. The doors with faulty switches don't know if there open or closed. When open the safety light on the door does not come on to alert oncoming vehicles that a door is open. If the switch stays on when the door is closed, the dome lights stay on until the battery is dead. The vw dealer just "jerked" me around until the warranty had expired. (fredericton vw). Since the part(s) for this repair are expensive, I feel that vw should recall all vehicles to replace the switches and door latches. Mel moir.

Three out of four door lock alarm sensors went bad within the last year and a half at about the same time whereas while the door was open, the car alarm would sound. The system functions so that if keyless entry is used and computer does not sense doors are open, the vehicle will relock after an allotted time. The vehicle should (and used to) disable the alarm as soon as any of the doors opened. The alarm goes off after the allotted time to lock the car again, even with door open (except for driver's side). This proves incredibly inconvenient while putting sleeping baby back into car seat. Have had two back doors repaired at about $400 per door. Front passenger door not repaired as vw service computer refuses to see issue with sensor. Regardless, alarm sounds while door is open. Also, lock sensor in truck failed with similar results. Replaced at $75. When inquired whether alarm could be disabled, was told it is tied into electrical system and would lose functionality of horn and other systems.

Center console latch broke and had to be replacedl.
1) vehicle comfort module spontaneously failed. This happened while driving the car! 2) a majority of the functions controlled by this module failed, including alarm going off while driving, fuel cap release not working, door locks, trunk release, etc. All failed. In the middle of the freeway, the alarm went off and there was nothing I could do to turn it off. Called emergency roadside service and they showed me how to disable the alarm (turn the key in the door lock on and off several dozen times). However none of the other functions worked, most serious was that the fuel cap could not be opened. I had to get this fixed before I ran out of fuel! 3) took the vehicle to the dealer. They replaced the comform module and most of the system operational again. 4) however over time, one by one various systems starting malfunctioning again. Within weeks, one of the rear door locks wouldn't close automatically. Later the trunk release didn't work with the remote. Then the interior lights wouldn't go off automatically. Other door locks stopped functioning, etc. 5) since the car was out of warranty and these were not crucial functions, I lived with these failures. But now I'm uncomfortable driving the car, not knowing where again in the middle of nowhere, everything stops working again. 6) I called Volkswagen and described this. They said I would have to go to a dealer to have the problem diagnosed and fixed at my own cost. They said that since the vehicle was out of warranty, they could not help fix this. I argued that this was a core component that failed - not due to wear and tear or misuse, but they still said sorry!.
I purchased a used 1997 vw Jetta gl in November of 1999. When I purchased the car, the dealership refused to give me a warranty. They said that they didn't offer the warranty with cars over 55,000 miles, mine had 55,500 miles. In late September of 2001 (69342 miles), my automatic transmission went out, during rush hour, in a high traffic area. About 1-2 months prior I had the transmission serviced, including a fluid change. I was forced to replace my transmission, and had several problems with it after. The shop that I had replace it said that they have seen many Jetta's with this problem. I still am having problems, with the car. Problems include: check engine light clicks on and off for no reason, not starting in warmer weather, irregular idleing, and sticky locks. I am aware that these cars have electrial problems that could cause unsafe conditions. I do not believe that the customer should be forced to pay for these coastly repairs, when so many cases exsits.

A wax melted out of the doors of the car, then a few days later the right passenger window made a screaching noise then dropped down into the door while electrically rolling it up. All other windows are making the same noise so I can't use them in fear I they too will fall down into the door. Sun roof cover came off the track while shutting it. The lever that you push to open the arm rest popped off while opening it. The drink holder first kept sticking inside the consul, then it slowly broke apart. The dealership is going to charge me hundreds of dollars to fix these things that shouldn't have broke in the first place. My warranty expired after only 24000 miles. My coolant (water) pump just broke last week, but they fixed it because it was covered under the powertrain warranty. That shouldn't have needed repair either. I'm in need of help and I don't like the way this dealership is treating me. This car is an expensive piece of junk. I'm waiting for the next problem to happen. Thanks for your help!.
The windshield wipers were intermittent. The dealer stated the wipers were incompatible. The wipers did not work in cold weather and did not have the proper speed in warm weather. The driver side window had fallen down into the door, the locking mechanism had malfunctioned and was replaced, the metal triangle pieces on the doors had been replaced, the cruise control never worked from purchase, and the front brakes had to be replaced. The consumer would like to know if there was a recall on the wipers. (no recall for wipers) mr scc.
