Volkswagen Jetta Sportwagen owners have reported 11 problems related to other fuel system pump (under the other fuel system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2014 Volkswagen Jetta Sportwagen

Failure Date: 03/01/2020

The vehicle has a hard time on startup when stationary (when the temperature fluctuates from freezing to thawing), sometimes taking three to four times for it to crank over. Once it cranks over it will vibrate and shake like it is going to stall. It will also shake and act like it's going to stall after in motion for the first minute. Took to the dealership, said it was an old battery. Replaced battery, the issue is intermittent (again when the temperature fluctuates). Read online that it could be a tdi intercooler design flaw. The dealership will not cover unless they experience the problem. This issue says it can cause engine failure. Looking to take it to an independent vw tdi shop to see if they can diagnose the problem and get a second opinion. Hopefully, this doesn't have anything to do with the fuel pump.

2 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2013 Volkswagen Jetta Sportwagen

Failure Date: 08/28/2019

While driving home, the car stalled with no warning and would not restart although starter etc were working fine. After getting it towed to the dealership, they reported that the fuel pump had failed leaving metal through out my fuel system, a problem they've seen with this make and model in the past. After contacting the manufacturer, they said it was a known issue, but not common enough to warrant a recall and would not cover the cost of repair which was over $5000, more than the current value of the car in good condition.

5 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2013 Volkswagen Jetta Sportwagen

Failure Date: 07/31/2016

While driving the vehicle was low on power and the glow plug light was flashing. This was the second time that this exact thing happened. The first time I turned the car off and let it set for a few minutes and it restarted and ran fine. We were on the highway and had to make our way through traffic to the side of the road, luckily it was not busy. On July 31 the same thing happened but this time the car was stopped in the middle of an intersection coming off of the highway. This time the car would not restart and the check engine light along with the glow plug light were on. Once we had the vehicle towed to the dealership they proceeded to inform me that the high pressure fuel pump had failed and the entire fuel system minus the tank had to be replaced due to metal shavings being in the fuel system. The only good thing about this issue was that none of my children were in the car when this happened as the car stopped in the middle of an intersection.

9 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2011 Volkswagen Jetta Sportwagen

Failure Date: 06/29/2012

Traveling in the left lane on 95 n outside baltimore MD at 65 mph my vehicle's gas pedal stopped responding and the car began to lose power and lurch forward and eventually die as the yellow diesel engine indicator along with the yellow engine indicator began blinking. I was able to avoid two lanes of traffic and coast over two lanes to an off ramp before the steering wheel locked. After contacting vw roadside assistance the vehicle was towed to heritage vw located at 9215 harford road #2 parkville, MD 21234 (877) 398-1963. It was after 9:00 p. M so the vehicle was left in the lot and all the paperwork was dropped in the box. The service department cited a fuel pump malfunction along with a faulty fuel gauge as the issue. This is the second time we have had to submit a report to your agency for the exact same issues (please see reference number 10417213), the agents information is listed below. 10 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2010 Volkswagen Jetta Sportwagen

Failure Date: 05/12/2012

While driving on the interstate at approx 72 mph, the vehicle suddenly lurched, the indicator light for the glow plug came on, and then all power was lost as the engine stalled. I was able to safely maneuver through traffic to the emergency lane and stop. The vehicle would not restart. I had refueled the vehicle approx 168 miles earlier and had been running at highway speeds the entire time until the vehicle malfunction. I have a 2010 vw jettasportwagen tdi. Diagnostic tests run by the vw dealer two days later revealed that the high pressure fuel pump had disintegrated, sending metal debris into the fuel filter and throughout the fuel system. The vehicle had undergone a 40k service just three days prior by a vw dealer.

With little or no warning, engine stalled in busy intersection during evening rush hour. Luckily car cost into adjacent parking lot. Had car towed to local vw dealer who said total fuel system had to be replaced due to high pressure fuel pump failure. Repair took several weeks.
