Air Bag On-off Switch Problems of Volkswagen New Beetle

Safety restraint system failure has occurred in this 2000 Volkswagen New Beetle multiple times. Volkswagen responded by replacing the wiring harness under the driver's seat the first time that the failure occurred but refused to actually correct the engineering issue causing the failure to return. The wiring harness is too short under the seat and feeding to the switch in the seat belt of the driver. The car is now out of warranty and failed yet again. If you will notice, there are many issues with the 2000 New Beetle but only 4 recalls of third party lighting products and no actual Volkswagen recalls. Volkswagen is being allowed to get away with abuse to the consumer.

Airbag light illuminated. No operator reason for this; I. E. , no vehicle impacts, no work done on car other than brake light switch replaced one week prior. Research indicates airbag system is inoperative if this light is on. Research also indicates this is a very common problem that is expensive fix and is not always reliable. Cannot be diagnosed with obd ii reader; needs expensive ($250+) diagnostic software and cable to use with laptop computer for reliable diagnosis. Vw dealers typically charge in excess of $100 to read diagnostic codes and then price of repairs is unaffordable. This is a safety issue--occupant protection systems are at least as important as emissions systems and should be reliable for more than 70,000 miles.

Air bags light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer two times on Nov 15,2005 cause:00591 lt side belt switch it was replaced. On Dec/12/ 20007 the test diagnostic and confirm fault cod 00591,drivers seat belt switch faulty. Estimate fore service $472. 00 I had to declined . If they replaced it two years ago it shouldn't have the same problem.

Air bag light intermittent. 3rd time for service to air bag system. 1st event was in warranty - replace clock spring, 2nd and 3rd events were not covered - over 50k miles and extended warranty claims they do not cover safety related systems including air bag systems. 2nd issue, was too short in length of wiring harness leading to clock spring. 3rd issue was due to seat belt switch, now light is again on. Have not taken car back to dealer yet.

Our 2004 vw New Beetle has had two air bag switch failures. The first one was within the first couple thousand miles and was covered under warranty. The second one just happened and was not covered by our original warranty, or our extended warranty. If this is a safety issue and we did nothing to promote the failure, is the $535 repair our responsibility? srs. Pco.

Air bag light and the warning light for malfunction indicator lamp comes on and does not go out also driver seat is stuck. The vehicle was taken on 11/15/2005 at that time it was only the air bag cause; 00591. Drivers seat belt switch faulty it was replaced on 12/12/2007 the same problem and more but,this time I have done a lot of research on the internet and I have found a alot of people have had the same problem and NHTSA is aware of it. The car is no longer under warranty I have had repair driver seat slider. It has been very frustrating, never purchase another vw.
