Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Volkswagen New Beetle based on all problems reported for the New Beetle.
Defective door latch ,,,safety issue because the warning light does not come on when you open door. I have two 2002 vw beetles and they both have non working warning lights due to defective latches, also airbags don,t work due to fault. Both problems are very common, but vw doesn't do anything about it. Also when you call the dealership parts department these latches are in stock due to high rate of failure. There should be a recall on the door latch, this is a safety issue. Also the air bags need to be recalled. The vw dealer wants 450. 00 to replace the door latch, and the airbags start at about 800. 00 so most people will be driving around without this safety equipment. Please make them stand behind there product . Thank you.

The lock mechanism on the passenger side door of my 1998 beetle just fell out without warning. I discovered that it was missing and went to a repair shop to get it replaced, only to learn the this is a common problem with beetles because the lock is held in by only one tiny screw. This defect will cost me $350. 00 to repair, in a car that has only 50,000 miles on it. I also recently had to replace a fuse that powered the radiator fan because there is no early warning system in the car to indicate that the fan is not working. I was only aware there was a problem when the check-engine light came on, by which time there could have been extensive damage to the radiator. The fuse itself had gotten so hot it had virtually melted. This problem cost me nearly $370. 00 to fix. The mechanic noted that he had seen this happen with beetles several times because there is no temperature indicator on the dash -- you have no idea there is a problem until the check-engine light comes on.
Driver door latch malfunction. No prior event. Driver door latch (diode/electronic controlled) failed -car door does not shut/stay latched. While driving car door opens on its own accord. Dealer acknowledges that door latch will not operate/close when it malfunctions. Suggested I use tape to hold door shut-while waiting for replacement latch. Part # 3b1-837-015-ak lock.

When opening and closing the door window catches on the convertible top. As a result, driver has to close the door three to six times before it is completely closed. This problem caused wear to the soft top. The armrest would not secure and the window would intermittently roll down by itself.

Door locks have never worked properly. The car has been at the dealer for repairs for lock problems at least 8 times. This is a safety issue. Often the doors will not lock with the interior power door lock. They have given several different diagnosis, we have been told they can't reproduce the problem, and now they are stating that the car is designed to operate so that the doors cannot be locked from the inside until the car is started if the trunk was opened with the power trunk release on the key. They tell me I have to open the driver's door, use the trunk release button on the door and then the locks will work properly. I cannot use the remote trunk opener and I have to open the driver's door first!!!! this problem did not start until we had owned the car for 14 months. There have been multiple other problems as well.
