I have a 2001 vw New Beetle. I have replaced brake light, which was drains the battery, serpentine belt, remoteless key which is still broken- basically 6 days after buying this car- I spent $1200 on repairs- now the check engine light is on, the transmission is acting funny, and basically- my vw dealership has a field day with me. To top it off- my battery died a month ago- and caught on fire when I tried to jump it. I am afraid that this car will blow up on me at any time. Please help me!.

Lock on gas lid was loose. I didn't think too much about it until I ran the car through a car wash. The air from the dryer popped the lid open and it went flying through the air. Lid is fiber glass and it didn't take much to break it. I saw another bug last week with the gas lid gone too!.
We have a 2002 and a 2003 vw beetle. The 2002 has door locks that only lock part of the time. The first seven times the dealer attempted to repair it they said it was an internal malfunction or they could not reproduce the problem. On the eighth repair attempt they finally decided that our power locks are not supposed to lock all the time becaues we have crank windows!!! the first fourteen months (until they replaced the instrument cluster for another problem) the locks worked perfectly all the time. They said that the locks meet vw specs but refused to give me a copy of the specs they are referring to. Vw said our owner's manual is our vw specs and it says to push the button and the doors will lock. That only happens part of the time. This is a real safety issue. Our teenaged daughter drives this car and needs to be able to lock her doors when she gets in and know that they will lock. The locks have done multiple other strange things also but the inconsistant locking is the most common problem. Our 2003 beetle has a safety issue with the rear defogger. It takes anywhere from 9 - 20 minutes to begin to clear the rear window. The dealer says that it clears in 7 minutes and that meets "vw specs" but the 2002 vw we have and the loaner beetles we have driven all clear the window in 1-3 minutes. The fact that the window doesn't begin to clear, at times, for 20 minutes is a real safety hazard. The 2003 also has lock problems. It locked itself while in our garage and would not unlock for two days. If that had been a dark parking lot it could have been a disaster.

Seatbelt air bag sensor- air bag malfunction light came on 11/8/03 took the car to the dealership they ordered the part. Both headlights were not working by the time I got to the dealer, they replaced those, turn signals were going on and off along with the hazard lights, was told these needed to be ordered. Called in 2 weeks and was told the parts were on manufacture backorder and they would call me when they came in. I called every 2 weeks they part were not in. 3/3/04 smog test done to register my car- failed smog, took car to dealer cat converter out, they had to order part said they would reorder the sensor, 3/12/04 took car back in parts not in yet, called every day parts not in now my registration was late. Cat converter came in on 4/2/04 it was installed dealer was refusing to smog test for free the finally did but would not pay the fees for my registration being late. Called again every 2 weeks parts did not come in. 6/30/04 went in other parts on the car were braking off, emergency brake handle broken, display lights not working, cup holder broken, again they had to order parts, and they never came in. 8/18/04 air conditioning stoped blowing cold air, made appt online for 8/23/04 took car in, none of the parts ordered are in again. Service stated my air conditioning is not covered because of a hole in the condensor even though my warranty states it is covered they refused to fix it and tried to charge me $95. 00 for finding the hole, I refused to pay after all I have been waiting since November for several parts including a saftey issue, the dealer service has been the worst I dealt with in 25 years of driving. I have sent emails, phone calls and faxes to the dealer regarding all my complaints and have not received a response.
