While driving on the highway, made a short stop and both sections of the back seat unlocked and came down/forward. Luckily nobody was sitting in them. There was nothing in the trunk that would have set off the unlocking bars.

Was driving my 1999 vw Passat. While in motion the driver seat steel bracket that holds the seat in place sheared off. I was then flipped 180 degress back into the rear seat. Lost control of stearing wheel and brakes since it flipped me. Contacted vw to see if there was a recall on this since the part is not exposed to weather conditions and the steel should not shear off like that. Vw stated no recall and they would not pay for repair due the age of car and no warranty. I had it repaired at vw service center ($860) since needed a car for transportation. I have the defected part and pictures. Sent up complaint to vw America and they said they will look into it but not able to keep me posted, leaving me to feel that they might not see the urgency to this terrible incident that happened to me. If my toddler kids were in the car I could have crushed their legs when the driver chair flipped. My husband and I really could have died in a car accident.

While starting off from a standstill, I heard a popping sound and I flew backwards in my seat. Apparently the seat frame mechanism for my drivers seat failed. The metal of the frame, as it was designed and manufactured, failed from metal fatigue. When it did, there was nothing holding the front of the seat to the floor board. I flew into the back seat, my hands were ripped from the wheel, and I could no longer reach the pedals. I struggled to maneuver myself back into a position where I could regain control of my car. Thankfully, it was very early in the morning, and there were no other vehicles or pedestrians located close to my car. As of this point, nothing has been done to fix the car.

Driving north in the far right lane on gallatin pk in nashville, TN, another driver in the south bound turning lane turned into oncoming traffic with no warning. My view was obscured by the line of traffic in the left hand north lanes. The car I was driving (2002 vw Passat) hit the car that turned in to my lane in a direct, classic t-bone hit. I never saw the car and hit the car at approx. 32 mph without braking. The driver's side airbag on my car failed to deploy although the passenger side airbag did deploy. I was wearing a seat belt, but the car seat also slid forward and I hit the steering wheel. The back seats came unlatched and everything flew forward through the car at impact.

When getting in to my 1999 Volkswagen Passat the seat base came loose and tipped me and the seat back against the back seat. There had been no previous warning with the seat shifting while driving or any creaking noises. Luckily I wasn't driving when this happened because I could have easily crashed with the severe recline of the seat. The vehicle was taken to a local vw dealership who looked at the problem and asked if I'd ever been in an accident because of the seat breakage. "no" was my response. Their bill for a replacement was for over $800 so I called vwoa and spoke with one of their customer care personnel about the high price and if they'd help with any of the cost even though the car was out of warranty. Their response was "no". The car was repaired out of my own pocket and a newer model seat base was installed that was of an obvious redesign. (I guess they thought the old one was inferior but didn't feel like it was a safety issue to let anyone know about. ).
1. ) normal usage 2. ) failure of latch that secures the rear, fold down passenger seat in an upright position. Possible consequences include personal injury due to object in cargo area impacting the seat during deceleration causing seat latch to fail and the seat to collapse into seated passenger. Particularly vulnerable in wagon models where larger cargo items can be stored. 3. ) we had seat latch release mechanism replaced. (failed part is not available).
My 2001 vw Passat GLS was hit in the rear by a large 89 chevy van. The seat that I was sitting in reclined almost all the way back to the back seat so that I was looking up at the roof. My seat belt cut my head and wrist of my left arm as I fell back. I know it was the seat belt because there was skin on the shoulder portion of it. After the accident I looked at the totalled car and noticed that the seat had shifted. The front thigh support portion came up, and the back support went down. Upon close inspection, I think that the seat brackets yielded in the collision changing the overall orientation of the seat. I was not seriously injured, as far as I know I just had a case of whiplash. However, I am staying in touch with my doctor should any additional back or neck problems come out of this. However, I could have been ejected from the seat or throw into the back, not to mention the serious injuries the seat would have caused to a person sitting in back of me. I called vw and the regional representative claims that the seat is designed to give in a severe rear impact. I asked for a statement in writing, and they agreed to this but I have yet to see it. (it may or may not be coming) I have the date and time of that phone conversation. I also have pictures of the car, the seat, and the brackets. Vw does not advertise any special seat features like Volvo's whips protection, so I am worried about the safety of this seat design. A quick internet search showed that several people have had similar events in a rear impact. Clubb5. Com, and audiworld. Com both have conversations about this in the forums. If this is a poor seat design, I think that they should all be fixed.
