Failure Date: 11/11/2019

On 11/10/2019 while driving I constantly felt burning sensation on my right thigh while on the highway at speeds around 70 miles. The next day on 11/11/2019 with the family and kids my right thigh started feeling like its burning. Subsequently we started smelling something burn and switched off all heat and heated seats and drove back home with out any heat in 15 f . On arrival we noticed that the heated seat got so hot that it burnt a hole in the driver car seat and melted the leather . We all got extremely scared of a possible fire in the car and could had got injured or stranded on a very cold day. There are 100's of similar issues posted online but I am not sure why this is not being fixed. If the cloths fire catches on and we are on a freeway at a high speed then my family's life could be endangered if I loose control because of this burn. The car is 2019 January vw Passat bought from vw and is almost brand new . I have taken a dealer appointment and will be visiting on 11/16/2019 to get this checked and probably fixed. But should I trust that this wont happen again ?.

12 Seats problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 01/15/2016

My front driver seat warmer was turned on low. I could feel the seat getting warmer and checked to be sure the setting was not on high which it wasn't. I thought maybe I was being sensitive and stuck my mitten under my thigh. I then noticed a funny smell and suddenly things got very hot and started to burn my leg as I was driving. I looked down and actually started to see smoke. I was not able to just pull over but quickly turned the seat off. I pulled out my mitten and fleece was actually melted. I was a block or two from work and tried to keep from sitting completely down as it burned. I arrived and jumped out to see a blackened area and hole in my seat!! the car was smelling and I am still in shock over this. I have looked and can't find a recall on the seat. This is very disturbing and dangerous. This should not happen no matter how old the car is.

23 Seats problem of the 2013 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 03/24/2013

I purchased the vw Passat in December 2012. I noticed within the first week the slow response of the navigation but I thought maybe because of the cold weather. I live in michigan. When spring came around I still saw the slow response and it was agitating me. I put the car in reverse and back out of my drive way and the camera still doesn't come on till after. At the same time my seat was squeaking. I took it to the dealer and they said the seat is fine and they will ask about the navi unit. At one point the navi restarted while I was driving. I took it back to the dealer and showed them how slow it responds and they got approval to replace it. I also showed them the seat they looked and saw that it was cracked. How can a seat crack? the second navi unit had the same response time. It also restarted while I was driving. I took it to the dealer and they called vw and the technician on the phone told them that the sd card I am using for my music is to large of memory probably that's why its slow. Now I am an engineer and that is just absurd. I called vw and they said I cant talk to a technical expert they will have to call the dealer ship. Have not heard anything and the dealer has not as well. I then moved all my music to the internal hard drive and took it to the dealer and they said will call them and explain to them what is happening. The music is not the problem even with out any music the unit is very lagging. If the navigation unit boot up is slow that is fine. What is the purpose of the camera if I can back out of my drive way or any parking spot start to drive then see the camera. Now sometimes it works but most of the time the unit takes close to a minute or so to boot up. Also the new seat they put in is beginning to squeak again.

24 Seats problem of the 2004 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 02/27/2013

While driving my vehicle, the driver's seat caught fire causing a hole to be burnt through the leather seats caused scorching to pants and a minor burn to the buttocks. A moderate amount of smoke was seen coming from the burning seat and filled the interior of the car. I immediately turned off the seat warmer, pulled the vehicle over, and turned off the engine. The seat continued to smoke profusely; I smothered the fire and contacted my local vw dealership immediately. The local dealership advised me to contact vw of America; the entire process has been a complete hassle and I am now without a vehicle while vw of America "investigates" the issue. My two young children and I were in the vehicle at the time; they became extremely upset and scared. Fortunately, this incident happened prior to my getting on the freeway (I commute 45 minutes each way for school). Had my seat caught fire while driving at highway speeds in heavy traffic I don't know that I would be alive to write this complaint. Words cannot describe the surprise and panic I felt when the seat began to burn me; to call this a safety hazard would be a gross understatement. This malfunction/defect is one that has the potential to cause great bodily harm and/or death should it happen under the above stated circumstances (highway driving, highway speeds, and heavy traffic). It is my opinion that a recall should be made to protect additional consumers from this hazard. I am extremely upset with vw and the seemingly casual attitude regarding this issue; as a consumer I feel vw has a duty to ensure the safety of their consumers-a seat that can catch fire at any time is a breach of that duty. I feel that some warning, at the very least, should have been issued to the consumer pertaining to this issue.

25 Seats problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 12/03/2012

When I turn my heated seat on the driver's side past level 1, there is one spot on the seat that gets painfully hot. I usually turn the heat off at that point. Today I was so cold that I didn't want to turn the seat off, so I put my hand between the seat and my leg. When I took my hand out, it smelled like smoke. I called Volkswagen, and they don't have any recall on these seats. I thought they might make a concession since it is a possible safety issue, but they wouldn't do anything for me.

26 Seats problem of the 2004 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 03/08/2012

I had been driving my car for fewer than 15 minutes with the seat heating element on. I noticed an acute burning heat near my upper left leg, and shortly thereafter noticed a hot/burning/melting smell. I immediately turned off the driver's side seat and pulled into a parking spot. After being turned off for 10 minutes, the burning smell was still hanging in the car and my seat was still extremely hot to the touch. The gray leather near the outer left edge of the seating surface is emblazoned with a singed, brownish burn mark, and a hole was burned completely through the leather. I have not turned on the seat heating element since this incident, but am quite concerned about the failure and fire hazard.

35 Seats problem of the 2004 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 11/06/2008

I own a Volkswagen Passat 2004 model. On November the 11th 2008 after working the night shift at mbusi in vance, alabama, I got in my car to go home. I turned on the heated seat just as I have done for the past 4 years only this time I got more heat than I wanted. My heated seat caught fire and burned my leg. In attempt to extinguish the fire, I wrenched my back by stomping out the fire with my foot. I did not have anything close to me to use with my hands so they would not get burned. I could not believe how fast my car filled with worst smelling smoke I have ever smelt. The seat was on fire before I even left the parking lot. If I would have waited two minutes to turn on my seat, I would have been on interstate 20/59 driving at 70 mph and I can only imagine what would have happened. This is one of the worst experiences of my life. Volkswagen has offered to replace the cover on the car, replace my pants and pay my medical bills, but what about the seat I will continue to sit on, and my confidence that this will not happen again. I am horrified to think about the potential for recurrence and I cannot overcome my ordeal I am devastated and have lost my confidence in the processes that are supposed to protect the consumer.
