36 Seats problem of the 2007 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 03/21/2008

A/c was not cooling as normal then the a/c was not cooling at all. The day the a/c system failed I was driving on the highway at the speed of 70 miles per hour and it was raining heavily. All windows to the vehicle fogged to the point where I had no visibility. I pulled over to the emergency lane. I had to wait for the storm to pass to open my windows and be able to see through all windows. I drove the car home and made an appointment with a vw service shop the next day. The shop checked the a/c system for refrigerant and found that it was contaminated. They vacuum/drained the system, refilled it with new refrigerant, and replaced the temperature sensor for the a/c system. The a/c was working as normal for two months then without warning my a/c system was not cooling at all. I took it back the next day to vw service. They found that the a/c compressor shaft was seized to the compressor housing. To repair it they had to replace the compressor, expansion valve, and condenser. They also cleaned to a/c lines, vacuumed the system and refilled it with refrigerant after putting all the parts together. I was without a vehicle for a week. Till this day my a/c system is not working properly. For example, I drive the car one day, the a/c works and normal, and the next day it does not cool at all. It works at random times. To add, the same time my a/c was broken my air bag warning light came on. Vw checked it and found that the front passenger side igniter had too much resistance. To fix it they removed the front passenger seat and bypassed the front passenger side airbag plug. Then they checked the seat harness and reinstalled the seat. My air bag warning light is on again. Moreover, the sunvisors lights didn't work, shift knob was corroded, the rubber seal to the satellite antenna rotted away, and both tail lights on the interior started to burn and look melted. All was replaced under warranty. Good for that because I couldn't have been able to pay for all the repair costs.

37 Seats problem of the 1999 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 01/06/2006

While driving my 1999 Volkswagen Passat, the driver's seat slid backwards and became completely detached from the frame. For a moment I could not reach the pedals or the steering wheel. Luckily, I was able to retain control of the car and stop it safely. It seems the entire seat is secured to the car with two screws which had come loose. After re-attaching the seat, I took it to a local Volkswagen dealership to see if they could do anything about it. I believe they applied some lock-tight to the screws, but that was it.

I sensed a rocking motion in the driver's seat, especially when applying the brakes. I reported the problem to the dealership. They determined the seat frame had broken at the point of a spot weld. They replaced the frame at a total cost of $480. 79. The repair resolved the problem.

43 Seats problem of the 1999 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 05/24/2003

Consumer moved the driver's seat to its fully forward position in order to retrieve a dropped item. The seat became stuck in that position and could not be moved. This was an unsafe position for the seat to be in according to the owners manual, as it allowed the possibility of injury if the air bag deployed.

45 Seats problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 09/10/2001

Ever since the vehicle was purchased, the drivers seat emitted a clicking sound and a slight feeling of movement in the seat when the car lunges forward or is stopped. We complained about the issue several times. This is documented on my bills with mileage reading 19k and 35k miles. The dealer was unable to identify the cause of the sound and movement. Finally, when the car had 40k miles on it (after the warranty period) the issue was identified. A factory rep was on hand that day at the dealership and identified that there was play in the seat track. I asked that this be covered and fixed under vw's goodwill program and appealed that this has been an issue since the beginning of the life of the car (during the warranty). I was denied this claim as the rep said that the seat did not pose any safety threats and this resulted from normal wear and tear. I felt that this was not a fare determination of this case so I appealed twice to vw (case # 60127133). They stated twice that they had to stand by the determination of the rep on hand that day and would not fix the issue (cost = over $800). I have been advised by consumers union to contact you as they stated that any play in the seat track is in fact a safety issue. . .

51 Seats problem of the 1999 Volkswagen Passat

Seat has been coming apart from the floor. Dealer replaced the frame of the seat, and now the seatback is not adjusting properly. Regional manager went on a test drive with the consumer, and said that it was not a safety problem. But, would fix it for her. Seat is still loose, and has been taking back manny other times.

52 Seats problem of the 1998 Volkswagen Passat

Driver's seat rocks and moves while car is moving. Manufacturing company says that there is nothing wrong with this and that its "normal". This is not normal and its dangerous. It becomes very easy to lose control of the car while it is moving! the ntsb board has a number of similar complaints by other drivers, so I am not the only one. This needs the company's immediate attention and correction. It shouldn't do this for any reason.
