Failure Date: 11/16/2019

Car electrical system goes crazy, speedometer needle goes crazy. Radio turns off and on, then the vehicle turns off completely. It turns on after. Sometimes all this happens before turning off, sometimes it turns off suddenly with no warning. Have spent a lot of money trying to fix issue with no luck. Driving it makes me very nervous but I can't change cars right now. It has happened both on small streets and highway in motion.

4 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 09/12/2018

Tl the contact owns a 2009 Volkswagen Routan. While driving between 30 to 65 mph, the vehicle randomly jerked forward and backward as if it were skipping a gear. In addition, the check engine indicator illuminated afterwards several times. The contact spoke with two unknown dealers and then contacted an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the underdrive solenoid circuit of the transmission was malfunctioning. After conducting some research, the contact found that the manufacturer placed a Chrysler engine and transmission into her Volkswagen vehicle. The independent mechanic completed the repairs with another new Chrysler transmission solenoid part. While the contact was driving on the highway, the vehicle lost complete acceleration and had to be pulled over to the shoulder of the road. The vehicle was towed back to the independent mechanic, but had not yet been diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer provided case number: 181899879 and NHTSA's phone number to file a complaint. The failure mileage was 115,226.

5 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 02/05/2018

While taking my grandson to school this morning on a very curvy country road the engine died on my 2009 volkswagon routain. Having no brakes and no power steering made it very difficult to control vehicle. I turned on emergency flashers when car finally stoped turned to off position then restarted engine. This is not the first time this has happened to me and my wife. Problem cannot be diagnosed by dealer why can't Chrysler fix this serious problem before someone gets injured or killed. I know as well as NHTSA that this has happened to many people. Previous recall fix for ignition switch at wv dealer to solve this problem did not work . Its a shame that many people have to injured or killed by a serious known problem like this before companies are forced to fix them.

6 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 07/11/2017

Our Routan has, yet again, left me stranded. I was running errands with two of my children and the vehicle would not start. This is not an isolated incident for me or, it would appear from research I've done, for this make and model. Our mechanic has run diagnostics and can not find anything wrong. It is a safety concern because it is unreliable and leaves me stranded, twice late at night, several times, fortunately, in front of my own home and this needs to be addressed.

Vehicle continues to shut down while driving without warning. Vehicle must either be stopped and restarted or placed in neutral while coasting to restart.

10 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 05/19/2016

For years I have experienced intermittent failures in starting my car, each time if I wait a while it will start. Additionally, beginning in Feb 2016, my engine will simply shut down while the car is in motion (pretty scary). I have dealt with vw several time to no avail and always at my expense. This latest development may cost me or someone else their life. Vw acts like this has not happened to anyone else and if they can't recreate the issue they can't address the issue, really! this is criminal! I have had a starter replaced as well as a switch and no change. All I get from vw is "you can take it to another dealer and get a second opinion we will cover 1 hour of the cost to diagnose the problem" really no greater expertise no information sharing, just another dealer, the third of which will likely tell me, we can't create the problem!.

After my van has been sitting for a while and it been warmed up for 15 minutes. Then I have to turn the key to off and restart the van and it sometime repeat itself if I'm stuck in traffic.

12 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Had the win module replaced for the electrical system ignition switch recall. Now the car will make sudden stops and shut down. Car then will not start up unless the battery is unhooked and hooked back up. Dealer wants to charge 350. 00 to do a diagnostic test to determine the cause.

13 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 11/03/2015

The vehicle while driving had all the warning lights come on , the gauges go up and down and the vehicle cut off. This happened multiple times one afternoon. Had to have it towed to the house. Internet search shows that this is a routine problem for others as well.

14 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 09/06/2015

Driving downhill, foot off accelerator. Abrupt loss of engine power followed by loss of power steering and braking. Vehicle under known recall and has been "fixed". This incident has now occurred 3-4x since the recall fix, nearly identical circumstances approx every 1-3 months. Vw kept the vehicle for > 2 weeks, unable to identify the problem, vehicle was returned to me without any new attempts at fixing it. I will be returning it to vw and taking it out of service.

15 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 04/21/2015

I went to pass a vehicle at 65mph and the accelerator pedal did not release, the van hit 80-mph before I popped it in neutral and then back into drive to correct the issue. Hitting the brakes had no effect on the unintended acceleration. . Read more...

16 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 09/27/2014

My key has been sticking in the ignition intermittently. Usually I have to turn the car back on turn the wheel, put it in gear and back in park, one or both of those things usually frees the key from the acc mode and allows me to remove it from the ignition. Today, I went to start the van and it is dead. Click. That is all it does. It does not appear the battery is dead, as the headlights and interior lights come on, the door dings, the mileage comes up, etc. There is a recall for something involving the ignition, but I have not been informed by vw yet as to a repair. I have sent in four prior complaints concerning this vehicle. I bought it used 7/2010 from carmax. It is unreliable and dangerous to have on the road. The entire brake system needs repaired every 7,000 miles following a sudden caliper seize, the van has numerous electrical issues that cause the car to just stop. One day I heard it running in my garage. I cant rule out one of my children messing with the fob, however, I have difficulty with the remote starter myself? (click2x&hold) I do not feel safe with this vehicle. I will not drive my children long distances or travel roads with them that require speeds over 40 mph. The van died while I was driving it 55-60mph on a busy highway, the vw dealership said it was not a recall issue. I clearly see it is a recall issue for some Routans, my receipt reads exactly as the side door harness recall is stated. I will be working with vw to request reimbursement, however, I don't feel that is good enough. There is a major problem here. I am lucky myself or my children have not been hurt. In hindsight of the gm ignition recall, I would be amiss to think a car company has my best interest in mind. I am hoping my government does.

17 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 09/11/2014

My wife took our 2009 vw Routan minivan to a vw dealership today to repair inoperable electronic door locks and faulty headlights (seperate complain filed), at which time she was informed of an ignition problem recall. The ignition part was placed on order and my wife was told the part had to be shipped from out of state and should arrive within five days. My wife asked, and was informed the vehicle was safe to operate; however, I looked up the recall when I got home from work and discovered the recall specifically states the engine can shut of during operation due to added weight from other keys or key rings on the vw key fob. According to the recall, dealership and maintenance personnel are supposed to inform customers to remove added keys from the fob. My wife had keys on her fob which the dealer mechanic had in his hand during inspections, but the mechanic never informed her of the risk, and allowed her to jeapordize her life by driving the vehicle without the required safety information.

18 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 08/29/2014

Vehicle completely turns off while driving, losing all control, use of brakes and steering. It has been 4 weeks since the recall was sent out and there is still no fix available, and the company can not give any other information besides they are working on it.

19 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 07/19/2014

Driving from indiana to phoenix the van began to shake violently while braking downhill on mountainous terrain. Temperature gauge went up over 200 and van smelled warm. Van did not overheat and problem subsided once back on level ground. Purchased van used on July 10 2012 with approx 25,000 miles.

20 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 07/04/2014

I have been experiencing the engine dying suddenly while I am driving. There is no warning or engine lights. Everything turns off including the power steering. This is terrifying. I took my vehicle to the dealer, I have an extended warranty. After keeping it two days, they claim that nothing is wrong with the car. I tried to explain the danger involved in my car suddenly losing power but the dealer states there is nothing they can do about it.

21 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 05/23/2014

The engine turned to off while I was driving and depowered power steering and brakes. At that point I restarted the car and was able to drive. Took the car immediately to vw dealer, kept the car for 24 hours, and they could not replicate the incident so nothing was done by them. This happened again at 93000 miles on August 8, 2014.

22 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 04/30/2014

While driving in jacksonville florida on highway, wipers suddenly came on, all idiot lights began to blink, headlights began flashing off and on, beeping sound like when door is open, the van suddenly died and I was unable to brake, steer or control vehicle. The van was towed to vw dealership the problem was found to be the sliding door harness which was interfering with normal operation of the electrical system. Replaced sliding door harness and failed battery. When I questioned the faulty part possibly being a recall issue I was told it was not. Cost=$624. 48 + rental car. Is important to note here that I had just crossed over a very long large bridge. If I had been going uphill when the van suddenly died I am certain I would have caused an accident inflicting injury or possibly death to either myself or another motorist, as there is no shoulder on the bridge and I was traveling at 55-60mph. I could not control the vehicle. This is clearly an issue with these Mini vans. Thank god I was traveling to work and did not have my children in the van as I waited 2&1/2 hours for a tow.

23 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 04/27/2014

The car suddenly shuts down loosing all electrical power. It looses all power steering and braking ability. It has done this several times at various speeds. I have to completely turn off the car and start it all over again. This has been very dangerous.

24 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 02/03/2014

Vehicle loses power, losing power steering, brakes, etc. Warning lights illuminate. Able to restart engine by shifting into neutral and turning key to start. ***happens multiple times approx every 1-3 months, random*** taken in for recall fix for this known problem in 2015. Has happened now 3-4x since the recall fix. Extended testing by vw has not established a reason. Multiple attempted fixes, no change to the loss of power. Last happened 9/6/2015, traveling 40mph downhill in gear, abrupt loss of power, followed by loss of power steering and loss of power brakes. Again, able to restart by shifting into neutral and turning the key to start.

25 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 09/12/2013

Our 2009 Routan randomly loses power and the engine attempts to turn off while driving. This has happened at least five times in the past year. Our Routan is part of the ignition switch recall, which should fix this problem, yet more than six months after this potentially deadly recall was issued, Volkswagen has not officially issued a repair, so our dealership will not repair. We have contacted Volkswagen directly, and all we have been told is "we are still waiting for more information. " considering Volkswagen issued this same recall on the 2010 Routan more than three years ago and should be familiar with the repair, I find this unacceptable. It is a lawsuit waiting to happen.

26 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 02/05/2013

While driving at various speed the car suddenly shuts off and loses power steering. This has occurred 4 times now and is extremely dangerous. Car can only be restarted when at a complete stop and placed back in park.

27 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 10/09/2012

Notice oil light coming on between oil change. . . . Filled oil to proper level. . . I took car in for service today (1/7/13) was told by dealership the gasket will need replace, that was the reason for oil usage. I just had my vehicle in to fix the sliding door (TSB recall not honored) in October and in was inspected with no problems. Doing research on internet and finding the oil, door is a common problem in vw Routan ( also talked to another owner was in for same problem, stated has been given runaround since day one about problems with his Routan).

28 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 10/07/2012

10/7/entering onto road, began acceleration up to 20/25 mph -then all power, controls dead. Lost power steering and coasted into parking lot. Shut car down, flooded/pumped accelerator pedal. Difficulty starting but worked, drove like normal, again. 10/14/turning from sidestreet, on to main street -going 20 mph. Lost all power again-manually turned coasted car into left middle turning lane. Re-started, operated normal.

29 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 11/15/2011

Vehicle engine will turn itself off and lose power while driving down the road. Able to pull the car off the road and immediately restart the engine. It causes a loss of power steering, power brakes, etc. This has happened multiple times and whenever taken to dealer for diagnosis the issue can not be duplicated. Usually happens when the car is cold, but yesterday it happened after we had been driving for a couple of hours. You can watch the rpm's drop every now and then and sometimes it will catch it and keep the motor running, but sometimes not.

30 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 01/03/2011

While driving at 35 mph the engine including electricity and power steering shuts off completely. Had to pull over and put it in park to restart the car. This has happened numerous times. I told the dealer that I read about the recall on the year after model that they fixed their car (changed win module) free of charge. He said my car is not included in the recall. When does it become a recall? this is a safety issue.

31 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 08/15/2010

2009 Volkswagen Routan. 1) normal vehicle, 22000 miles, put away in attached garage at night. Bedrooms above garage. 2) before going to bed I checked to be sure garage door was closed. I found vehicle in garage running. 3) vehicle has remote start key. Key should only activate pushing first door lock button and then remote start button twice. Checking system I found only pushing remote start button will start the vehicle unlocked. This is a possible deadly incident as carbon monoxide would undoubtedly have killed my whole family as we slept had I not been thorough in checking the garage door. A child could push the bottom or it can be pushed inadvertently in a pocket or if something were set on it. I know this now we are safe but other people are bound to encounter this incident.

32 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 07/12/2009

During the first month of purchase of my 2009 vw Routan I experienced problems with the rear sliding doors. At first it was getting them to open an close an went to the point of the door trying to open while car was in motion. I have had the car in for multiple problems like I have gone through 26qrts of oil in the last 9 months an they have supposedly fixed it 4 times now . The rear sliding doors are a whole other issue, I have had the car in for this issue atleast 12-15 times an 5-6 of those times was during the first year of ownership. My most recent time of having it in the vw service dept was about 6 wks ago an nothing was resolved after it being there for a week. I did not know of the lemon law or I would have talked to a lawyer then. There has to be something that someone can do to help consumers with this vehicle. I cant keep worrying about the door opening while my children are in the car an I am driving the dealership an vw customer care have been made well aware of the issues an have done nothing but tell me to bring it to the service dept where nothing is done.
