2 Cruise Control problem of the 2011 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 09/11/2017

No acceleration up hills. Car cranked but didn't turn over engine, randomly. Almost stalled out on the highway during storm by using headlights, wipers, a/c all at once. I had to turn off headlights, wipers and a/c (that kept windshield from fogging) in order to keep from stalling out on the highway with three kids in the car. While driving in neighborhoods (5 mph-25 mph) the car would sputter and jerk forward. I was told the cars trouble could be just water in the gas and so we poured a solution that would clean the gas tank of impurities, if only it was that simple. While driving on the highway using cruise control, the cruise suddenly stopped working, cruise light stayed on but the car just physically slowed down. Our family is scared to get into our vehicle for safety reasons and right now it's our only means of transportation. The tire sensor also has been on constantly and fixed 3 times only to light up 20 minutes later after leaving the vw service department. The sliding passenger door window is having electrical problems and we only used it 5 times from 2011-2017. We paid to have the fuel pump and the tipm sensor replaced last week which cost us approx. $1800 and replaced front brake pads and rotors because our rotors had gouges in them. We replaced a car battery in 2016, while we were on vacation, the car would start and it locked the key in the ignition and wouldn't give it back.

4 Cruise Control problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 06/21/2015

On 6/21/15, I was driving on the highway with cruise control set at approximately 75mph. I was not accelerating, nor had my foot on the gas or brake petal. Without any warning, the gas petal pushed to the floor and the vehicle began accelerating quickly. I immediately turned on my hazards and turned off the cruise, but the vehicle continued to accelerate in excess of 100mph. I feared colliding with other drivers on the two-laned highway, and began braking against the car's acceleration, which was quite difficult. I pushed the brake petal down as hard as I could, which stopped further acceleration; but did not slow the vehicle quickly. The vehicle continued to rev up and tried relentlessly to accelerate against my best efforts to brake. I was able to move the vehicle to the gravel shoulder. Once I was able to slow the vehicle to around 20mph, I turned off the vehicle and coasted to a stop. There was a strong smell of smoke from the brakes. I believed the problem was related to a cruise control malfunction or a related sensor. I discontinued using the cruise at any time. However, on 7/9/15, the same problem occurred. This time, the cruise was not set, and the vehicle was traveling at approximately 50mph in heavy traffic during rush hour on a three lane freeway. The same steps noted above slowed the vehicle after it began accelerating out of control, making it difficult to navigate through the surrounding vehicles. The gas petal was again stuck to the floor and could not be pulled up. After the second occurrence, there is likely significant damage to the brakes and/or engine. I contacted a Volkswagen dealership, that plans to diagnose the vehicle. I am fearful of driving the vehicle to the dealership, but was instructed by the vw sales manager to bring the vehicle in for inspection and be sure to turn the key to "off" or "accessory" should the problem occur again.

5 Cruise Control problem of the 2010 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 05/22/2011

I had the following problem occur within the first few months of owning a 2010 Routan. (the dealership told me that it was not a problem, rather that I was not familiar with the way the new transmissions work. ) when the cruise control is set near 50 mph and the vehicle goes downhill it will downshift automatically and the engine will increase its rpms, essentially creating a motor-brake that keeps the speed less than about 55 mph. I accepted their explanation and their assurance that it was safe and would not damage the vehicle. I have only observed this happening at speeds near 50mph. However, this Sunday when it happened on a particularly long, winding hill, I decided that I would prefer to manually use the brake, so after it began downshifting I pressed the cruise control button to turn it off. It did not turn off. I pressed the button several more times, but it had no effect. I pressed my foot on the brake, but the vehicle stayed in the lower gear with the engine revving and it appeared to me that the brake and the engine were working against one another. I decided to let the vehicle control itself until we returned to level ground. Once we reached level ground and I could hear the engine begin to reduce its rpms, I pressed on the brake and the cruise control disengaged. This was scary but controllable because the road was dry and the road, though steep, was wide and easy to navigate. However, on a snowy or wet road, this would have been a very dangerous problem and if it happens to anyone else they may panic and do something even more dangerous. Then, an accident investigator will not realize the cause of the accident because, as in my case, the cruise control will be turned off. But the driver will not have been in control of the vehicle. This, I believe is a very unsafe situation. I have not reported this Sunday's incident to the dealer or to vw.
