39 Equipment problem of the 2011 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 08/23/2016

Problem started about 4 weeks ago with car not starting. Would turn over but never crank up/start. Local vw dealer said issue was fuel pump and replaced. Symptoms continued with longer than normal cranking before starting. Sometimes vehicle acts like the battery is dead and will "click" until after multiple attempts it will finally turn over and start. Certain times after having vehicle in reverse and placing into drive it just dies, have to place in park and restart. While slowing for a traffic light, vehicle has hesitated as if to die, but thankfully it has continued. While slowing for a stop, transmission miss shifted into 1st and made a loud bang. Since then at slow speeds if you lifting off the gas the transmission makes loud noises. All of these issues have happened in the last 4 weeks. It has been to the dealership 2 twice and I am awaiting contact via the dealership for a 3 visit in 4 weeks. Since original purchase, I have installed 3 batteries in this vehicle. We have lost all confidence in this vehicle, and find ourselves hoping nothing serious happens if it dies while traveling. This intermittent electrical issue while traveling at speed is a concerning safety issue.

40 Equipment problem of the 2011 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 08/16/2016

Car wont start, only sometimes. Just turns over repeatedly, until you turn the key off. Sometimes nothing happens. Sometimes it starts normally. Once it stalled. Usually this happens on the first start, but sometimes it doesn't matter.

41 Equipment problem of the 2010 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 07/19/2016

When you turn the ignition nothing happens - absolutely nothing!. The car does not start, or make a sound as if it is trying to start. You have to sit and wait several minutes up to fifteen and then it may start. Vw has replaced the ignition switch according to the recall and still we continue to have the same problem. We have taken the vehicle into the delearship and had several others look at this situation as well. I viewed several online forums and found out that many others have had the same issue. I called the vw customer care line and have not had satisfaction as they insist on having a dealership look it over and they want us to continue to pay for replacing more parts. I have explained to customer care that if they take the time to look online they will see many complaints for this issue and all they come back with is "we monitor online for complaints about our vehicles and when we see many we investigate. Well it looks as if they are not doing a good job. We have had the starter replaced (cost $530. 79) and today they told us the starter went bad because a module was bad and we now need to pay an additional 600 dollars. If the module was bad, that should have been replaced and not the starter. For almost 6 years this issue has been going on and they did nothing. Now they want us to pay for something they should have repaired years ago.

42 Equipment problem of the 2010 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 06/07/2016

Vw Routan does not start sometimes. One day it starts, and other day it does not. The computer diagnosis does not detect any problem.

43 Equipment problem of the 2011 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 05/09/2016

Takata recall. I bought a vw Routan in March of this year with 77,000 miles on it. The first week I had it I went out to start it and it would not turn over. I tried it again and it started. Next day it did the same thing. Now its gotten so bad it takes 20 trys before it starts. Now my trans. Is jerking when I put it n gear. Im taking it in tomorrow so I will let you know what happens.

44 Equipment problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 01/21/2016

I bought a certified pre-owned 2009 Routan. After about a year, the car randomly will not start, it just clicks but will not start. Replaced battery. Still - car will not start. This has been going on for 3 years. Had starter & alternator checked - both good. Had the ignition recall done and problem resolved itself for about 3 months - now it started doing this again - randomly will not start. Hubby moved a wire under the hood and magically the car started. Got home and van will not start! after spending $5,200 on a new transmission - I hate to put any more $$ into this van. Has anyone found a fix for this problem - I've seen many have this same issue. Talked to a lady at vw repair shop who has been in excess of $3,000 trying to fix this exact same problem. Still keeps happening. Help!.

45 Equipment problem of the 2011 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 01/10/2016

Multiple instances. Vehicle shuts off while driving and will restart after sitting for an hour or two. The first instance occurred while traveling on a busy interstate at 65 mph. I had a semi to the right and another semi behind me when the vehicle stalled. Very scary! I took it to the dealership that I bought it from and they could not get the problem to repeat. No repair was made. This problem recurs every 6-10 days. I just purchased this vehicle about a month ago with 65,000 miles on it.

46 Equipment problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 08/28/2015

I took my van into the vw dealer to get the safety recall #28h1 performed to replace the ignition switch. The dealer discovered that there was an aftermarket remote start installed and told me that they will not perform the recall service until I get all the wiring connectors back to stock. I took up this issue with the vw corporate office and they gave me the same answer. I don't see how this aftermarket remote starter absolves vw from the responsibility to perform the safety recall. It is their defective part that needs to be replaced. I told the dealer that I don't care about the remote starter, I just want the safety recall to be done as they are responsible to do.

47 Equipment problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 08/26/2015

My 2009 Volkswagen rutan dies while driving. I've on the vehicle for two years and this has been happening the whole time. That usually happens at lower speeds (under 35mph). It happens when I'm going straight and when I'm turning corners, going over or no bumps at all. When mike carr dies I lose steering, all power/electrical. I have taken it to Volkswagen three times for this issue. The first time it was serviced for a recall fix. The problem continued so I took it back and was informed of a second recall for the same issue. So I had it serviced for the second recall fix. The problem continued so I take it back a third time. Volkswagen service department kept my car for over two weeks and then told me they couldn't find anything wrong with it. The problem has continued and seems to be happening more frequently.

48 Equipment problem of the 2010 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 03/16/2015

I purchased this vehicle in March of 2015 when my vehicle shut down and rebooted itself while driving. Since 2019-present, my vehicle shuts off while driving and will restart back up maybe 5 mins, an hour or so later. The abs, check engine, airbag, and other lights on the dashboards come on and remain on, in which, my car begins to make a beeping sound. The headlights, wipers, and sometimes my horn goes on and off by itself. When my vehicle shuts off, so does my ability to steer the wheel, it locks up. When I turn the air on in the car, my car begins to shake as well. Also, I have replaced my car battery, alternator, and starter two times this year and my vehicle still have the same issue.

49 Equipment problem of the 2010 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 01/21/2015

This will be the third time that my fiance and I are experiencing this problem. I have taken my van back to the dealership the first week of January 2015, it hasn't been 2 weeks and the problem has come back. The van is going back to the dealership to get fixed. This morning the windshield wipers turned on and won't turn off or stop when we turn the switch to turn off, the turning signal blinkers, and the heated seats won't turn on at all. We called the dealership and they said the manufacture fixed it but they don't understand why it¿s happening. To cover ourselves we have a video of the problem as it happened this morning. We depend on this van when we to transport my 3 kids I don't want to keep thinking something will happened on the road while in use or cause or be in an accident especially that the turning signals won't turn on. Please investigate.

50 Equipment problem of the 2010 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 01/21/2015

I dropped my van off on 1/21/15 and today is 1/28/15 and I called the dealership that I bought the vehicle from and he has been helpful but where they dropped the van to, to get it repaired at the Volkswagen dealership where they can work on it say they cannot duplicate the malfunction. It¿s been over a week and my fiance had to be the one to contact the dealership for an update. Now I have a video that my fiance has recorded and I sent it to the dealership where I bought the van and he has looked at it. He also tried to send it via email to the Volkswagen dealership where my van is being repaired and their email is incapable of receiving the file due to the fact that it is too big by their standards. Now my fiance has called the Volkswagen dealership directly and said to the supervising person in charge of working on my van that we are more than willing to drive over there and show him the video, his reply was it is not necessary. Ok my thought on that is if you cannot duplicate the malfunction of the windshield wipers not turning off, the turning signals not working at all and the heated seat not working at all wouldn't you want to see the video. We have a record of it and I feel like he doesn't care. Please investigate this faulty vehicle. I am frustrated and now looking into the lemon law. This vehicle is a hazard and my kid¿s safety while in this vehicle is my priority. I do not feel safe in this vehicle.

51 Equipment problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 10/09/2014

On the said date, I was driving my car when I heard a loud noise coming from the ignition area and the car suddenly and unexpectedly stalled, I was able to restart the car right away. A month later, I heard the same noise and the car stalled again, while I was in the middle of a very busy intersection. In August of 2014, I had received a recall from vw informing me of a recall ( NHTSA 14v-396), I took my car to the dealer who has not been able to fix the issue, in November, parts are still not available for the repairs to be performed. I spoke to the regional case manager at vw who won't do anything either. Vw is letting me drive an unreliable and unsafe vehicle.

52 Equipment problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 09/27/2014

My key has been sticking in the ignition intermittently. Usually I have to turn the car back on turn the wheel, put it in gear and back in park, one or both of those things usually frees the key from the acc mode and allows me to remove it from the ignition. Today, I went to start the van and it is dead. Click. That is all it does. It does not appear the battery is dead, as the headlights and interior lights come on, the door dings, the mileage comes up, etc. There is a recall for something involving the ignition, but I have not been informed by vw yet as to a repair. I have sent in four prior complaints concerning this vehicle. I bought it used 7/2010 from carmax. It is unreliable and dangerous to have on the road. The entire brake system needs repaired every 7,000 miles following a sudden caliper seize, the van has numerous electrical issues that cause the car to just stop. One day I heard it running in my garage. I cant rule out one of my children messing with the fob, however, I have difficulty with the remote starter myself? (click2x&hold) I do not feel safe with this vehicle. I will not drive my children long distances or travel roads with them that require speeds over 40 mph. The van died while I was driving it 55-60mph on a busy highway, the vw dealership said it was not a recall issue. I clearly see it is a recall issue for some Routans, my receipt reads exactly as the side door harness recall is stated. I will be working with vw to request reimbursement, however, I don't feel that is good enough. There is a major problem here. I am lucky myself or my children have not been hurt. In hindsight of the gm ignition recall, I would be amiss to think a car company has my best interest in mind. I am hoping my government does.

53 Equipment problem of the 2010 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 08/14/2014

On August 14th, 2014, I placed my key in the ignition of my 2010 Volkswagen Routan. The car/engine made an odd sound when the key was turned and all the lights went out. Additionally, the dash lights started flashing and my key became permanently stuck in the ignition. I heard a very rapid "clicking" noise under the hood so I opened it and discovered the fuse box under the hood was the source. Upon opening it, I heard a very fast clicking sound and felt each fuse and found the large fuse, 2nd from the left front was clicking very fast and loudly. I needed the vehicle so I used jumper cables and this eventually enabled my car's key to release. All the warning lights were lit up and I left the engine run for approximately 8 min. , then turned off the car - to verify it would start again. It did, and now only the engine warning light that lights upon an incident is still lit. I called my closest vw dealer, who has services my car in the past, and they claimed no knowledge of the issue and stated the recall #66665 electrical system - ignition switch - is not applicable to my vehicle. Sure it isn't! exact same issue that is noted in the recall, but somehow my vehicle is not one of the ones affected. I am pursuing thing with the service manager, but so far only push back.

54 Equipment problem of the 2010 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 07/29/2014

Car battery is in good shape because I recently replaced it with a new one. The problem is occasionally I try to start the vehicle and it will not start when the electronic throttle control light is blinking but if I use my car keys to lock and unlock the car, then the electronic throttle control light will go off and car will start. Last week it occurred two times and I took the car to Volkswagen dealership but they told me, the diagnostic test is not showing any code and hence there is no problem with my car but I think there is a problem because I have experienced this problem five times in total. They requested I tow my car to them the next time it occurs to see if the code can be determined but I still not comfortable because I don't know what is coming next.

55 Equipment problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 07/01/2014

Vehicle stalled several times approximately February 17, 2015. Then finally wouldn't start at all. Emergency road side assistance came got car started. Then while driving dashboard started blinking power was lost car cut off. Had to contact road side assistance again to have cart towed to repair facility. Could not find out problem suggested to be towed to dealer. Dealer couldn't find the problem initially then found it made repairs which I found out later it was partly due to the recall (28h1. ) then approximately the middle of July 2015 car began to stall again when trying to start. Contacted vwoa made arrangement to have recall repair done again. It lasted approximately 7 weeks later September 2015 and once again the car is periodically stalling when trying to start. If this is electrical again if this problem continues to occur will it eventually loose power and disable the car all together and be in a life threatening situation again.

56 Equipment problem of the 2010 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 06/15/2014

Automatic sliding door did not lock in open position. Instead, it opened almost all the way and then immediately began closing again. I was already reaching into the van at that point and had to move out of the way quickly after applying pressure to the door to keep it from closing on me didn't work. This has happened on 3 other occasions. Vehicle was seen by a vw dealership under warranty. They could not replicate the issue but stated it was a known glitch. It took a lot of force from me as an adult to try to stop the door from closing. We have 3 children that ride regularly in our van. "known glitch" is not acceptable.

57 Equipment problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 06/07/2014

I've had the vw Routan since 2010 - purchased it with 6,000 miles on it. It's a sel so it's auto-everything. In the past 12-16 months both the left and right passenger auto doors stopped working due to a wiring issue. (2 seperate incidents; $300 each repair). Today, my left passenger auto door stopped working again. The vehicle sees normal usage and has not been in an accident.

58 Equipment problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 04/15/2014

Your site wouldn't allow pull-down for affected parts earlier, here is part of the e-mail report I first sent dealer 5/6/ " . . Something new is a problem w/my Routan but I want to check in prior to making an appt. Since we so recently had it in for diagnostic check up. Here'¿¿s what'¿¿s happening it'¿¿s very scary: 6 times now over the last 2 weeks it'¿¿s just conked-out/shut off while i¿m driving, leaving me with no steering, brakes or anything! fortunately it'¿¿s happened in low traffic areas on fairly straight roads so i¿ve been able to coast to the side, but i¿m getting scared to drive my van. Yesterday- it conked out three times. . . Bringing kids home from school-- again very scary, and once on a turn which was difficult but luckily no one was behind me. . . These events. . . All happened at low speed 15-30 mph and happen so ¿¿quietly I can barely tell it¿s happened. . . It¿s like the key/ignition somehow flicks all by itself into the acc position. Then I have to wait ¿til the van stops, turn the key and van all the way off and re-start. Then it seems to start up fine. But this happened three times just yesterday p. M. . . . It'¿¿s dangerous, and i¿m getting more and more scared to drive my van, but I have to with four kids and activities. " today 6/30/14 (again) dealer found no problem. Cost to replace switch $989. 00. I researched delphi, china, austin martin and fully believe a commonality with gm recall exists. The Routan is a vw & Chrysler complicating my research. I've followed hierarchy- dealer, vw, now NHTSA but hit a road block(no pun). Please investigate this ASAP. Update 6/30- gm recalled 8m more as "unintended key ignition rotation"- exactly what's happening with my Routan. I tried submitting this complaint earlier- but your website wouldn't allow. So this is not someone jumping on the bandwagon. This is real, please help.

59 Equipment problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 09/12/2013

Our 2009 Routan randomly loses power and the engine attempts to turn off while driving. This has happened at least five times in the past year. Our Routan is part of the ignition switch recall, which should fix this problem, yet more than six months after this potentially deadly recall was issued, Volkswagen has not officially issued a repair, so our dealership will not repair. We have contacted Volkswagen directly, and all we have been told is "we are still waiting for more information. " considering Volkswagen issued this same recall on the 2010 Routan more than three years ago and should be familiar with the repair, I find this unacceptable. It is a lawsuit waiting to happen.

60 Equipment problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 07/03/2013

Passenger side power sliding door wire harness keeps coming out of place and getting caught in door. Local dealer claims this has already been repaired under the recall but it is still happening.

61 Equipment problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 04/17/2013

The ignition would not shut off and the key gets stuck. Have to play with it several times to get it to shut off. The dealer replaced the ignition as well as other items in the steering column.

62 Equipment problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 03/31/2013

The electronic driver side passenger door will not latch open. The door will power open then slide back shut hitting whoever or whatever is in the way. This is an intermittent problem. The van was checked by our local dealer several times over several years. This is still an issue. This has led to myself and children being hit by the door leaving bruises. It almost smashed my 2 year old daycare child's leg in the door but I intervened stopping the door prior to it hitting her. I have looked on the internet and found several other complaints also with no remedy from vw.

63 Equipment problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 11/20/2012

I was accelerating from a red light when the hose from the cooling system exploded. My van lurched forward and died. I had purchased an extended warranty but was told they would not cover it. I had to pay over $600 to get the hose fixed. This is just the beginning of many problems.

64 Equipment problem of the 2010 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 08/22/2012

I was making a left turn in my 2010 volkswagon Routan VIN# 2v4rw3d17ar388450 onto a busy street and car suddenly stalled out. I lost power steering and nearly jumped the curb and hit a woman with a baby stroller. I had my 3 kids with me in the car ages 5, 4, and 1. Car started back up right away. This problem happened once before when I was driving straight at about 30mph on a residential street but I thought it was a freak incident since the car was brand new with barely 10,000 miles on it. This time it nearly cost people their lives. I took it to the dealer. They kept it for 6 days. Meanwhile I had to use a much smaller loaner car which was not made for a family of five. They told me they couldn't duplicate the problem and that everything seems fine and that there is nothing they can do and if it happens again to make another appointment. Well it happened again. 3 more times in fact. I called up the dealer again. He tried to deter me from going in saying "you can bring it in again but if we cant duplicate the problem then there is nothing they can do. " also made it a point to tell me that they only have small loaner cars available. I also called volkwagon and told them the story. They told me to bring it to dealer. This stalling issue which occurred again on 4/16/2013 is the last straw. I refuse to get into this deathtrap to take it to the dealer. Its a shame the car only has 18000 miles on it yet it is having these issues. I will never buy a volkwagon again. They can send a tow truck. It is very dangerous. I guess legal action is called for here.

65 Equipment problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 03/18/2009

We recently purchased a 2009 Volkswagen Routan se with both driver and passenger automatic sliding doors. Our 4 year old son went to open the rear passenger side door by pulling on the handle, and at the same time my husband went to open the door by pushing the "door open" button on the key. As a result of this, the door ended up closing completely, and latching, on my son's hand. It also would only open once my husband forcefully pulled the door open. Of course his hand immediately swelled up and we visited the emergency department, had xray's taken, and there was no incidence of a fracture. When we reported this directly to Volkswagen of America, we were instructed to bring it to the local dealer and have diagnostics done. The result? "there is nothing wrong with your vehicle. " they went on to explain to us that the anti pinch protection is working, but is not designed to sense such a small object. Volkswagen of America assured us that this matter was not taken lightly, and that the engineering department came to the conclusion that the door was functioning properly. When we addressed any further actions, ie replacement of door, vehicle, or termination of our lease agreement, we were told, "we are sorry for this unfortunate accident, but accidents happen and there is nothing more we can do for you. " when we expressed our concern that our 4 year old son is petrified of our car, and that he refuses to get into the vehicle by himself, let alone open the door alone, we were told, "I am sure he will get over it after a while. " these answers are not acceptable to us. For a car that is marketed as a family mobile and a safe vehicle, we feel that it does not live up to it's claims. It makes no sense why an automatic door would be designed to sense something bigger than a child's hand, limb, or other body part. What goes hand in hand with a minivan? a child! we feel we have been neglected due to the lack of caring or importance that this matter has been given.

66 Equipment problem of the 2010 Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 02/06/1016

I would like to inform you that the tipm is not just related to Chrysler. The Routan is a joint venture between Chrysler and vw. It has the body of a vw body but the engine is a Chrysler. My Routan has had the tipm fail on 2/6/2016 and confirmed by vw dealership. The van has the same signs that every one else was reporting except that the engine never shut off while. It has the signs of the engine not wanting to turn over, dash lights not wanting to work properly and now the headlights not working on low or high beams. The head lights happened when I was driving on the city streets. The engine not working happens when we come out of the stores from shopping, first thing in the morning and same with the windows and doors opening when not is use. I researched online about other Routans and they have Chrysler tipm in them. I do not understand why Routan's have not been included because it is a Chrysler product but it has a vw name on it. It was made in the Chrysler windsor plant in canada. This all started in late December of 2014 and it was off and on since then. The headlights problem is new but the engine, doors and windows are off/on issue too.
