Warnings Problems of Volkswagen Tiguan

The vehicle’s automatic emergency-braking and parking-assistance systems intermittently activate when no collision is imminent. The vehicle unexpectedly stops, shifts itself into park, and engages the electronic parking brake while moving at low speed. This has occurred while pulling into parking spaces with vehicles on both sides and while beginning an unprotected left turn when oncoming traffic was still at a safe distance. The sudden stop creates a risk of being struck by another vehicle. The vehicle was presented to an authorized Volkswagen dealership for inspection, but the dealership was unable to reproduce the condition and stated that it did not believe there was an issue. Who was involved: driver/owner of a 2026 Volkswagen Tiguan sel-r line turbo what happened: while reversing into a parking spot, the vehicle stopped unexpectedly with no obstruction present. Driver held the brake and shifted to drive; the vehicle stopped again, then shifted itself into park and engaged the electronic parking brake without driver input. Driver had to shift to drive again to get the vehicle moving. On the next attempt, reverse and forward motion worked normally and the vehicle was parked successfully. When this occurred: July 24, 2026, approximately 3:40 pm where: a parking lot with mostly empty parking; empty spaces on both sides of the target spot (there was a truck two spots over but otherwise no vehicles present), clear/unobstructed view of all parking lines, no cross-traffic, pedestrians, or objects present why (suspected cause): unknown. No obstruction, object, or hazard was present that should have triggered automatic braking or a park/e-brake engagement. Suspected false positive from park assist / parking sensors or a parking-brake logic fault, consistent with reports from other vw owners of similar phantom-stop and self-shift-to-park incidents. All sensors were free of any debris. How resolved: condition cleared on its own after shifting to drive a second time; vehicle was then able to be reversed and parked normally with no further incident.

A few weeks ago I noticed that a car passed me and the little blind spot alert light didn't light up. When I arrived at my destination I did some scanning through the menus and I discovered that the blind spot (side assist) was not on, but when I attempted to turn it on, the car said "function not available". After some investigation (using a odbeleven scanner) I discovered that the blind spot assist functionality has a fault with "no communication". This system, upon failure, give no indication anywhere, plus this also means my rear back up alert ( a kid running behind my car, for example, which would normally cause a huge alert, nothing happens). I also learned that there is a technical bulletin : [xxx] related to this. This should be a recall, its dangerous to have no indication that a safety feature system like this is completely nonfunctional (without an odbeleven read). Vehicle was brought to Volkswagen dealer on 4/2/26 for recall service/software update. Prior to service, rear camera and safety assistance systems operated normally. During recall procedure, update reportedly failed and vehicle was returned with rearview camera, parking sensors, and multiple driver assistance/safety systems inoperative. Vehicle has remained unrepaired for approximately seven weeks pending parts or further repair, with no clear resolution timeline provided. Failure occurred directly following dealer-performed recall work involving safety-related systems.

System: the rearview camera system on my 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan failed and has not worked reliably since shortly after lease. The camera intermittently displays a black screen or fails to activate when the vehicle is placed in reverse. This issue has persisted despite normal vehicle use. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. Safety risk: this defect presents a serious safety risk. Rear visibility is critical to avoid hitting unseen pedestrians, children, or obstacles when reversing. The rearview camera is a federally required safety feature for a reason. I am especially concerned because I often drive in residential areas and near schools — places where children may be behind a vehicle without being visible through mirrors alone. I am a parent myself, and the thought of potentially harming someone due to a malfunctioning camera is deeply distressing. This unresolved defect has caused significant anxiety and fear each time I drive. I do not feel safe operating this vehicle, and I worry constantly that I might unintentionally harm someone due to the lack of full rear visibility. It has diminished my confidence and peace of mind behind the wheel. Dealer confirmation: yes. I brought the vehicle to the dealership, where it was kept and I was later told they could not fix the issue because no remedy is currently available. No loaner was provided during that time, and I was left without transportation while believing the vehicle was being repaired. Inspection history: the vehicle was inspected by the authorized Volkswagen dealership. However, no repair was made due to the lack of an available fix. It has not been reviewed by police or insurance representatives. Symptoms/warning signs: there were no warning lights or dashboard alerts, but the camera would randomly fail, showing a black screen or partial image when reversing. These symptoms started within the first few months of leasing the car and continue.

• March 26, 2025 – backup camera & sensor failure: while reversing my Tiguan in a parking lot on a rainy day, both the rearview camera and parking sensors failed simultaneously. The screen did not display the rear view, and the sensors did not activate. Although I checked my mirrors, the low-lying wall on the left was not visible, resulting in damage to the left side of the vehicle. • July 9, 2025 – dealership inspection: the vehicle was inspected at Volkswagen bayside service, where I was told no issues were found and that the camera and sensors were functioning properly. These features are designed to work together as part of Volkswagen’s integrated park assist/park distance control system. • direct causation: • manufacturer liability / recall acknowledgment: in April 2025, I received a notification from Volkswagen customer protection regarding “compliance recall 91ny – camera control unit. ” warranty and recall coverage: I purchased the vehicle on July 26, 2023, and it remains under the 4-year/50,000-mile new vehicle limited warranty.

Was waiting at an intersection and began to pull out into traffic. The vehicle's wheels drop momentarily into the gutter section of the street (also causing the vehicle body to rock forward/down), but then the parking sensors "detect" the street itself as an object and slam on the brakes. This locks the vehicle's brakes while it is half in the oncoming traffic's lane and is difficult to recover and continue driving. This happens several times a year after owning the vehicle for 3 years and is bound to cause an accident. In the most recent case, there was plenty of space before the next vehicle, but this won't always be true. The vehicle has not been inspected for this specific problem. It appears that the sensors are working "properly" in that they detect and alert of objects reasonably. The issue is with the logic built into the vehicle's computers when deciding when to apply/hold the brakes. The vehicle should be Smart enough to recognize when body roll or other factors are causing a false positive and not be so quick override the driver's intentions. There is no warning when the system will misbehave and cause the vehicle to stop abruptly. The same intersection can be traversed hundreds of times and then suddenly it will beep and immediately lock the brakes.

Take blind spot indicator is not working. Not warning of another car in our blind spot posses a safety risk to us and other drivers on the road with us. The dealer, garvey volkswagon queensbury NY 12804, confirmed our complaint. Our car has not been inspected by anyone other than the dealer. The problem first appeared in April 2023 without any warning. I contacted volkswagon of America and they said they would not pay for the repair. I have a statement from the dealer and Volkswagen of America.

When unlocking the car the speakers will play a constant loud thud sound at max volume. The infotainment system will seize. Additionally, the sound system may play no sound from the speakers at all. The vehicle must be allowed to completely turn off in order to be fixed.

Instrument cluster and infotainment display were blacked out in day time from start up and for duration of drive aproximate 2 hours. Restarting had no effect, turning lights on and off had no effect on dash display. Brightness of display is controlled through infotainment display which was not visible. After 20 minute shutdown and restart display was normal again. Checking display brightness setting, it was normal. I reset it to very high. 1 hr later while driving display dimmed and brightened repeatedly over 5 minute duration, then went dark again for duration of drive, but due to reset of brightness I could dimmly see speedometer reading. Perhaps if I had a blanket to cover display when it first started it may have been visible but just extremely dim. During this condition backup camera display also black.

The blind spot warning, forward collision warning and parking collision warning suddenly stopped working even though they showed that the features were enabled in the car's dashboard settings. Fortunately, I realized this and took it to the dealer for repairs.

I've been having backup camera problems since I purchased this vehicle in June 2020. It only works 20% of the time. There have been times were I don't see people or vehicles as I back up. I've only been seen for service twice. I don't have the time to take it in once a week for them to do to a hard reset or replace the j949 module. I've attached a service receipt. I've been having issues with the reverse camera and the infotainment display. This happens 70% of the time but when I put the car into reverse, the screen will go black with a pop up saying "the parkpilot is currently not available". This happens randomly, sometimes when I leave home the reverse camera works fine, but when I try to park somewhere at my destination the issue appears. Sometimes an image from the rvc will appear for a split second then cut out to black with the popup of the park pilot not being available. I don't the have park assist feature available on the model I've purchased, so I'm not sure why the car even thinks I have "park pilot". The issue "fixes" itself when I've left the car on off for a couple of minutes but the issue will reappear again sooner or later. It's an ongoing problem and I've taken my car into the dealership time and time again with no resolution. I purchased this car because I thought this was a great safety feature and now I can't even use it because it does not work.

I purchased this 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan in September 2019 and began noticing an intermittent rearview-camera problem around that time. I do not remember the exact date of the first occurrence because the problem initially happened only occasionally and was not persistent. When the vehicle is placed in reverse, the rearview camera intermittently fails to provide a reliable image. At other times, it operates normally. Because the problem is intermittent, it has been difficult for the dealership to reproduce consistently. Loss of the camera image reduces visibility behind the vehicle and creates a safety concern while backing up. An authorized Volkswagen dealership inspected the vehicle. The service manager stated that the stored fault indicates an intermittent open circuit in the video cable. The dealer’s diagnostic history reportedly shows approximately 90 fault occurrences beginning July 19, 2026. During recent testing, the dealership was able to get the fault to set once. The dealership has not conclusively confirmed that the camera control module failed. It proposes replacing the module as the first repair step for approximately $1,165 and stated that additional repairs may be necessary if the module replacement does not correct the problem. Volkswagen customer care documented the concern under case number 07696586. I am submitting this report because the intermittent loss of the rearview-camera image may reduce the driver’s view behind the vehicle and increase the risk of a backing collision.
