Volkswagen Tiguan owners have reported 57 problems related to wiper (under the visibility category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Volkswagen Tiguan based on all problems reported for the Tiguan.
The wipers of this car go on and off automatically and you are not able to turn off the feature. They go on without rain or any debris on the windshield. I already took it to a Volkswagen dealer and they accepted the error and replaced the steering wheel, saying this was the cause. With the new steering wheel, the problem is still going on and they don’t offer any solutions because they don’t understand what is happening to the car. This is very distracting and I’ve been close to crashing due to the wipers going on and off consistently. I researched on the internet and there are several vw cars with this issue and no solutions found.

The vehicle's sunroof glass failed catastrophically and shattered spontaneously without any external impact or contributing factor. The glass was not safety glass and shattered into sharp shards, dispersing throughout the vehicle interior, including the rear seating area. This failure posed a serious safety risk, as glass shards caused minor injuries to my skin, and could have resulted in significant injury had a child or pet been seated in the back. The incident has not been reproduced; however, the damage was confirmed and repaired by the authorized dealership, which replaced the sunroof glass, frame, and sunshade due to extensive damage. The vehicle was inspected by the dealership, and a comprehensive insurance claim was filed. No warning lamps, messages, or symptoms were present prior to the failure, and the event occurred without warning.
Wipers randomly start when switch is turned off. Wipers will randomly not start when wipers are turned on. Safety of others is affected due to visibility being obscured due to wipers not turning on. Injuries can occur when wipers randomly start. There was no warning prior to the problem starting.

Went to work, drove home, went to take my daughter to her friends and noticed my windshield on the passenger side was cracked big time. Just from sitting in my driveway.
Four cracks of varying lengths ranging from roughly one inch to four inches have spontaneously appeared on the drivers side of the windshield. These were first noticed when entering the car, not while driving. Cracks can be felt from the inside of the vehicle only. One crack appears to be jagged and looks black when looking through the windshield from the inside.

Driving long the interstate in south carolina, all of a sudden there was a loud explosive sound and a crackling sound accompanied by the loud explosion. It startled me!! I gathered myself and put on hazard lights and got over on the far right lane to pull onto the shoulder of the highway. I thought that a tire or two had blown but was not the case. I got back into the car and started visually looking around to see where the crackling noise was still coming from. I looked up towards my sunroof and discovered that a large hole in my sunroof. Fortunately, my sunshade was closed and shield the debris/glass from spraying my face and body. I took the car to the v. W. Dealership and explained the infraction to them. They diagnosed the problem and contacted me later that day to let me know that they were sending the request to v. W. Corporate to get authorization to repair under warranty. The dealership did not detect any signs of rocks or debris causing the explosion. Corporate denied the dealerships request to repair under warranty. I filed the damaged sunroof under my auto insurance. Im currently awaiting for the adjuster to inspect the damaged sunroof that is at the dealership. I feel that corporate dud not even consider the fact that this could have been an exploding sunroof. . . And im sure that they have encountered this defect before. There are articles on-line of others who encountered this problem.

The defect has occurred since the day the vehicle was leased. The entire multimedia and safety interface shuts down randomly while driving (screen goes black, gps stops, rear camera and driver-assistance functions stop working). This happens in multiple areas across the city, not in a single location. The dealership initially blamed my internet or phone, delaying proper diagnosis. The first available service appointment was more than a month later, and the vehicle was first taken in on January 27, 2025. Since then, the vehicle has been in the shop more than five times across multiple dealerships, including over a month during the most recent repair attempt. I have also been required to visit the dealership more than 30 times for the same issue. Dealership technicians and the service manager stated that the vehicle is defective, that nothing else can be done, and that all repair attempts have failed. The manufacturer claims it is an “environmental connectivity issue” in one spot, which is not accurate. Multiple videos requested and submitted show the failure happening in different areas of the city. At the dealership’s request, I drove with a technician who recorded the failure again. Customer care instructed me to return the loaner vehicle immediately and take back the defective vehicle, even though it is unsafe to operate. The customer care manager refused to speak with me and required an appointment several days later, but they still demanded that I return the loaner and pick up the unsafe vehicle now. When I requested written documentation acknowledging that the vehicle is unsafe, they refused to provide it. This is an unresolved, repeated safety defect that puts me at risk while driving. Please, I'll appreciate any help. Thank you in advance.
Windshield wiper motor damaged. Yes available for inspection. Preventable damage to wipers causing visibility issues. The damage was inspected by a Volkswagen service center. No one else has inspected it. The service center gave me an estimate to repair the windshield wiper motor for an estimate of $1100. When asked how to shut it off , they didn't know and had to go back to their colleagues, then he came back and gave me a 4-5 step process on how to shut off the wiper, similar to a combo on a playstation or sega remote. The failure happened due to my lack of knowledge on how to shut off the automatic wiper sensors off. The manual doesn't clearly state how to completely disable the automatic sensors. Due to this, the wiper was damaged in a car wash, ripping off one of the wipers and no both wipers not functioning. I took the quote for repair and called the corporate office of Volkswagen and they denied pick up any of the cost and said it was damage done to the car. But I argued that it was preventable and that it didn't clearly state in the manual (owner's manual Tiguan edition 08/2023 united states version) how to shut it off completely. I asked for the call to be escalated, they refused, then I came back and said I wanted to know where in the manual does it clearly state how to disable the auto sensors. The leadership member couldn't tell me at first where it was documented, after a few minutes he finally gave me the page numbers were it did not state how to completely disable the sensor. He said decision was made. He took me from page 112 to 114 to 37 and where we landed was where they made the decision " page 114 fig 106 labeled "a" "rain/light sensor deactivated and a square next to "a". The design of the wiper functionality is flawed and so is the documentation to support what it truly does or how it is managed. This is also not aligned with what I was told at the service center. But the member of leadership didn't care to know what they handled it.
The windshield fluid washer disappeared aka consumed mystery without the operator usage. I had to fill in a gallon of the windshield washer every2-3 months, and I did not do any washing or anything to use the fluid. Last week, the check engine came in and told me to fill the washer fluid and it could not pump the washer fluid onto the windshield while I was driving the vehicle during the snow storm that blind me visibility on the road that could cause a very serious accident if that happened. This is a very serious safety issue that could kill someone. As of today, 12/27/2024 I just filled the windshield washer fluid and it consumed 3 gallons of the washer fluid. The question is where all the fluid went even that I did not use it?.

In my vw Tiguan, the sunglasses component that has the lights, the sunroof buttons, and hands-free microphone, dropped from the roof at the end of the day. It was one of the more warmer days that this happened on and I took it into the vw dealership to have them look at it the next day. The whole component blocked my ability to see and caused blind spots. The dealership gave me the car back with the light component taken out and everything else taped up. This caused a problem to not be able to see out of my rearview mirror. The dealership told me two weeks ago on 9/20 that until the part comes in, which is backordered and I still have an unknown timeframe of it coming in, I will be riding around with it taped up. I have found it difficult to drive even with it taped up because it will come down when the tape gives up. I am unsure of what the cause of it is, but know that this has been our hottest summer in the south since I've had my car.

The center overhead console fell down (controls dome lights, sunroof, & other convenience features). Thankfully, no one was driving but it could have caused a serious issue if we had been. Many other vw Tiguan owners have experienced this issue, sometimes multiple times.
The overhead console hangs down with wires blocking my rearview mirror and creating a blind spot on the right mirror. Volkswagon in colorado told me that the console replacement part is on a national back order with no eta at the time. My safety and the safety of others are put at risk because the overhead console swings while I am driving, which is a major distraction. I have to use one hand to keep the overhead console where it's supposed to be so I'm driving with one hand. Additionally, it blocks my view to my right mirror, impeding me from doing lane changes. Yes, it's been confirmed in writing from my local dealer and they are well aware of this problem because it's occurring all over the us with 2020 vw Tiguan cars. Check out this website: [xxx] yes, my Volkswagen dealer has inspected it, however, they did not repair it because they did not have the console part. No, there were no warnings--it happened suddenly and by itself. The overhead console is made of cheap plastic and likely started dangling due to the summer heat waves which weakened the console. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
Glass is broken.
Center console above rear view mirror has broken and fallen from ceiling for the 2nd time. It as repaired in Aug 2023 after this happened the first time. This is a defect and it needs to be addressed ASAP! if this falls from the ceiling while driving, its very dangerous and most likely would cause an accident. I will be calling dealer tomorrow and it better be repaired under warranty.
My 2020 Tiguan was purchased used about 10 months ago. We moved from ri to CA and the overhead console has completely fallen down and is hanging by the wiring harnesses. I have contacted the dealer and corporate. They do not want to make the repair because it is out of warranty. Upon further investigation it appears that this is a common issue effecting many other 2020-2023 vw Tiguans. This is a safety concern as it obstructs my view from the rearview mirror as well as my line of sight out the windshield. I have a newborn child and bought this car because of the reliability and safety features. A separate issue, but there was a class action lawsuit pertaining to the ebs (emergency breaking system) not functioning properly. This has not been the best experience and I thought vw would stand behind their product, sadly this has not been the case.
Travel assist goes on and off at random times . The wipers turn on and off by themselves. Also the front collision warning light comes on randomly. . What should I be doing with this vehicle… I’ve read many reviews that other people have the same issues.
While I was driving today, I heard a loud pop. It was caused by the car's overhead console (it houses the controls for the sun roof, garage opener, cabin lights, etc) suddenly detaching. Apparently, a lot of owners of this same vw model has reported the same issue and several has reported it as a recurring issue. . Read more...
Windshield spontaneously cracked. No previous chip or crack. Temperature was about 72. Car was not being driven.
Back up camera malfunction. Most of the time does not work. Gives message on screen.
The overhead control console breaks free and falls down in front of the rear view mirror. Inspecting the broken console, the screws are to tight causing the plastic to fatigue and eventually break. Searching this issue on reddit, it seems common enough, people have had them fall when closing a door, pots holes ect. Mine broke free when giving over a speed bump.
The front windshield is very fragile. I am now replacing it again after having replaced it just a year ago from the same issue. Crack develops and travels across the entire window.
The vehicle’s infotainment system automatically displays the rear view backup camera, as expected, when placed in reverse. However, this can be overridden by selecting the x in the upper right of the screen or by selecting another function such as the app button. The only way to get the backup camera to display again is to put the car in a different gear/park and then back into reverse. Not being able to see in reverse puts anyone behind my vehicle at risk. There should not be a way to defeat the camera.
The windshield wipers have been acting up, turning on unexpectedly when I use the turn signals, with no input from me, or when I drive over bumps, which seriously blocks my view and creates a danger on the road, especially in bad weather or during turns. This problem started showing up in October 2023 when the car had about 16,000miles, still under the 4-year/50,000-mile warranty. I took it to a dealership that month, but they checked the turn signals, scanned for faults, and found nothing, yet the issue didn’t go away. I tried again in September 2024 with another appointment, but the dealership wanted $250 for a diagnostic and to keep the car overnight, so I couldn’t proceed. The car and wiper system can be inspected if needed. There were no warning lights or messages beforehand; the trouble began in October 2023. Only the first dealership looked at it, with no fix. I have several videos showing the problem.
The overhead console broke and fell, dangling by wires only. It became a hazard inside the vehicle as it blocked visibility and swung inside with the possibility of hurting someone. I called vw customer care and they refused to acknowledge this issue and stated since the vehicle was 1000 miles over warranty limit (though still based on age, as < 3 years) there was nothing they could do.
I have had to replace multiple windshields for something barely hitting it on the freeway - I think this is my 4th windshield and have not been driving near big trucks or construction during the incidents. Another issue is that I have had the car abruptly break in both leaving the parking lot and on the freeway in traffic thinking I am going to hit something when nothing is there which seems to be a sensor issue.
We have a cracked windshield and vw has not been able to provide us with a replacement windshield. I have contacted vw parts at the dealership, called vw care, and called harrs auto glass. No one can get me any info on when a new windshield will be available for my car. I'm told the windshield is on backorder with an unknown eta. I have been waiting for a windshield for 1 year with no news.
Windshield provided cracks super easily.
1-most importantly, while driving my vehicle on 4 separate occasions I am alerted of possible impact or close vehicle and the car hard brakes by itself on 2 of theses malfunctions I was almost rear ended. 2- I was sitting in my vehicle on a phone call in my buildings garage and my windshield just cracked out of nowhere. Nothing hit my vehicle and a crack just started rising from the bottom of the left drivers side straight across the center of my windshield . 3- on several occasions while driving my radio/gps display just blacked out and I had to reset it in order to get it back on. 4- my front suspension sounds like is is going to fall out of the car when I hit the smallest of bumps, it almost sounds like it was installed and never tightened up. 5- when it rains or snows the sensors on the vehicle start bugging out and alerting me of multiple hazards when in fact there is nothing near me. This issue may be related to the earlier mentioned statement #1 this could be a scary thing for some people.
Windshield cracked while stationary no impact. Glass is unavailable to replace due to demand as dealer states this model is having multiple failures of windshield.
Windshield cracked from the driver side a pillar towards rear view mirror. The crack was about 18” in length and happened while parked at work. Windshield was facing the sun in the afternoon. The crack did cause a safety concern and was breaking federal and state dot laws.
The overhead console in the vehicle detached on its own in October 2022 and will not stay secured. This has prevented my ability to see out of the front windshield and therefore hindered my safe operation of the vehicle. The dealer confirmed the issue but would not cover it under warranty, claiming that it was my fault for installing a dash camera. However, no wires are near the roof liner and the installation of my dash camera has nothing to do with the overhead console. The dealership then charged me $155 plus tax for this "assessment". Please see the attached files showing this is a known issue with the vehicle that Volkswagen will not properly address and cover. I have contacted vw customer service multiple times by us mail and have still not received any type of response.
The windshield on my 2022 Tiguan randomly cracked one day with no points of impact along the crackit's about three and a half feet long it takes up about 85% of the windshield. It really affects my visibility as it makes the lines on the road appear in two different places on either side of the crack. After contacting insurance and getting an appointment to get the glass replaced I was told by several windshield repair shops including safelite and the vw dealership that the part is on national back order indefinitely and they cannot provide a replacement part at this time. I am not the only one this has happened to I will provide links to other accounts of the same thing happening on the same car. Https://globalnews. . Read more...
The overhead console detached and was hanging down and blocking the rearview mirror and proper vision along with hanging in mid air. The overhead console just began to fall and looked loose and then a day later was hanging all the way. This is clearly an issue, I have googled it and immediately found that this has happened to others and I find that the terminology that the dealer uses is similar amoungst customers to put the blame on the customer and say it is not a faulty part. The screws that hold this piece up seem to have been over screwed causing this overhead console to detach. I also saw others report that they get it fixed and it even happens again and again it is not covered due to the plastic breaks too and they say that is an outside force that the plastic broke. With this part broken I am also unable to open my sunroof too. Another point I would like to make is that if my husband was not able to disconnect the wires I would of had to drive with the part hanging in the way. I tried to duct tape it up and unhook it and it did not stay up nor was I able to unhook it. I also saw comments stating that this is happening to vehicles when it is hot out and it has been hot the past month or so here. I think the worst part is that a dealer is basically saying you are lying and had to damage the part which I have no idea how you would of even damaged the part due to the location of the part. I am completely dissatisfied with the dealer and how they handle the situation by saying it is the customers fault when clearly you can google it and find others with the same issue, did everyone damage the same part that is located in an awkward location? I dont think so.
On 07/01/2022 while driving on a highway a rock hit my windshield at one inch from passenger side middle of the windshield which resulted in a star like chip plus a long crack that kept getting longer by the day. Currently that crack is three quarters of the windshield, I tried to fix it by a repair kit without success, took it to safelight auto glass they said it can't be repaired and needed a new windshield which only a dealer can carry since it's the car is a new design for 2022. I called my local dealer, findley henderson Volkswagen, I was informed it will take at least 8 weeks for them to get one with a cost of $1,200. It's unacceptable to drive around with a cracked windshield for more than two months due to lack of this safety part.
Water coming in through sunroof and pooling in the back seat foot pans. Only reason I was aware was first because someone with the same vehicle told me it happened to them and second I began to see moisture and ice on the inside of the windshield. Also began to have a mold odor. This lead to corrosion of the floor pans and damage to electrical wiring. Unknown what other long term damage could be caused.
