The drivers side door keeps opening while driving. I see recalls for other Volvo models but not mine. This is very concerning when driving on the highway.

This vehicle is the C70 convertible. When driving and hitting a speed bump or a pothole, both the driver and passenger doors pop open from a fully closed state to a partially open state. The doors do not fully disengage but in the partially closed state the doors rattle and shake. When this happens, the "door open" warning light appears on the dashboard, and you need to fully open the door and then re-close it. On a standard trip of 25 miles, this occurs no less than 6 times. So this is an ongoing everyday situation. It is a bit disconcerting to be in the car and hear that first door pop and feel the door shake and rattle.

There is a know defect with the chassis used for several Volvo car models. My car is a Volvo C70, year 2012. My car is affected by this defect. The defect wasn't disclosed to me at time of sale. I only learned about it literally 10 years later when Volvo of gilbert (dealership) advised me to install a costly part on the rear suspension of my car because of "excessive negative camber". According to the Volvo repair department, they've known for years of an internal repair "recommendation" memo issued by Volvo that Volvo actually pays for on other models, but won't pay for on mine, to correct this "negative camber" on the rear of the car. ***** the negative camber causes tire walls to fail early and abnormally wear the internal edges of the tires. I've experienced early tire failure on multiple sets of tires on my Volvo C70 and never knew why. Now I know. **Volvo has always known. ** I have to replace all of my tires almost every two years due to the inside edges wearing out, despite faithfully rotating my tires several times a year. My tires have worn down to the belt on the inside edges despite having plenty of good tread left in the middle of the tire itself. About two years ago I had a dangerous blowout on the freeway because of a tire that failed early -- now I know it's because of the negative camber. More recently, two of my tires wore down all the way to the belts despite being less than two years old. ***** Volvo knows about this issue. There is a good papertrail of the issue being documented both by Volvo and their customers, but they failed to warn us of the dangerous car suspension and failed to provide the fix to all of us (while providing the fix to some of their customers). ***** please listen to this 2-minute recording with the Volvo technician (judd) who disclosed the known defect to https://youtu. Be/ids4nd-hzfo ***** this needs to be rectified for all of us with the faulty chassis'. Thank you.
While driving with the top up or down on the highway the doors will intermittently unlock and the security light come on because the door is ajar. This has been going on since I purchacesed the car 2 yrs ago. Now 5/29/23 while driving on the highway the drivers door opened while driving 70 miles an hour. This is a daily occurrence and it happens multiple times daily. This is a dangerous and scary malfunction.
This is not a singular incident; it has been persistent for five or so years at this point. Quite frequently, when I am driving with the top down for at least 20 minutes, one of the doors unlatches (a couple of weeks ago, this actually occurred six times in one hour or so trip, though such frequency is unusual). For the first year or so this occurred, it was only the driver's door, but then it started happening with both doors (though still more frequently the driver's door). To be clear, it unlatches -- it never has swung open, even if pressure is applied to it. Still, this is jarring when it occurs (all the more so at highway speeds), and I am left to wonder if at some point it will "graduate" to full door opening. I am also especially concerned given that I have a child with a driving learner's permit. I mentioned this in passing to a Volvo dealer service agent a couple of years ago, and he professed to be unaware of it and suggested I would need to bring it in for diagnosis etc. Which I have not done. However, having been on the NHTSA site today and seen other complaints about this with this year, make, and model, I felt I should add my experiences to the record. And of course, given those observations, I would like to get it addressed without my having to incur the cost of doing so.

Both cabin doors (initially only the passenger door) will pop half-open from a closed position while driving, particularly with the windows and/or roof down. This occurs seemingly at random and regardless of lock position or firmness of door closing. The effect is a startling noise as the door opens slightly, the window retracts, and the cabin lights and door warning alarm engage. This can pose a hazard to safe driving. Neither door has as-of-yet come fully unlatched, remaining instead in a half-latched position until the driver can pull over and close the door fully once more. Lubrication of the latches by a mechanic did not alleviate the issue, and a cursory browsing of Volvo forums suggests that this is a common issue for which no recall or service bulletin has been issued.

Within the last 6 months, (fall 2021 – spring 2022), one of the doors in my car has opened multiple times by itself, while I was driving the car. The door was closed properly when I started driving and I did not accidently pull on the door handle. This occurred so far only with the driver side door, while the top was down, (the car is a convertible), and while driving at highway or close to highway speed. Last time the door opened and closed multiple times, before I had a chance to pull over and close it. I noticed the door opening and closing as the interior light came on and off and window lowered down and went up several times, which occurs while the door is being opened. This leads to a dangerous and unpredictable situation.
Vehicle 2008 Volvo C70 hardtop convertible. Doors randomly unlatch/open while the vehicle is in motion. This occurs on both the drivers side and passengers side doors during vehicle operation in drive. It has occurred numerous times while driving on straight flat non bump roads and in roundabouts, while cornering. It is a serious safety issue. It occurs when the top is up and when the top is down.
When top is down, at highway speeds, the driver-side door becomes ajar, interior light comes on and window goes down 1/2 inch. This seems to happen about 20 minutes into the drive. Will happen multiple times on long drives. This only seems to happen when the convertible top is down. Driving at highway speeds and having the door go ajar is not safe. Not sure why Volvo never took this seriously, as its reported by many others on the internet - same exact issue. Reported to Volvo (leiken Volvo cars cleveland), they cannot reproduce and said everything looks correct. Offering to replace the lock mechanism. The issue is easy to reproduce, but just driving with the top down for longer than a 20 minute period.
Passenger door keeps opening whether top up or down, mainly on highway driving. Very unsafe!.
The "passenger side door open" indicator suddenly showed on the dash while driving approximately 50mph. As I slowed down , I asked my wife that was in the passenger seat to make sure her door was properly shut. The door opened right up without unlatching, she then promptly shut it and made sure it was secure. About 45 minutes later the same thing happened again. After investigating, I found this is a common issue with certain Volvo models. Recalled for some models, not recalled for my model.
This occurred after driving for about an hour. While driving at a fairly high rate of speed, I felt the driver's door move slightly. The dome light came on indicating that the door had opened. The windows were down so I cannot state if they would have slightly lowered as they normally do when the door is opened. I pushed outward on the door to see if it was fully open. The latch held the door. Using the interior door handle, I then opened and closed the door. The doors were then locked as extra security. Approximately 30 minutes later this happened again on a busier highway. I then had to worry about the door opening on me again while I was driving, however, there was no further occurrence. Later after returning home, I performed an internet search to see if something like this had happened to others. After seeing other comments of C70 doors opening & door latch problems, I decided to report the problem to get it on record.
I am having an issue where the driver side door randomly unlocks and opens while driving. This has happened daily multiple times a day. Upwards of at least 5 to 10 incidents daily. Now my passenger door is alerting my it is opened. This is a very risky. This is a faulty issue I am seeing in forums about the 2009 C70 Volvo. Please let me know this will be taken care of.
The large coupe doors on this vehicle have a tendency to become unlatched while driving requiring the need to stop the vehicle and re-open and close the doors. This happens when doors are locked as well as unlocked. When this happens on the highway at high speeds, it is very dangerous and difficult to hold the door closed while making your way to the side of the road to correct the problem. This happens with no warning. There are recalls by Volvo for this exact issue on several other models but not the C70. I have reported this issue directly to Volvo customer service. I am also aware this is a widespread issue as I have have seen it identified by several other C70 owners on various Volvo owner internet forums.
The trunk will no longer open although when I use the remote key to unlock it I do hear it click. I have read that this has been a problem for other drivers, which is why I'm reporting it here.

Door opens while driving.
Right front door unlatches when I go around a corner while driving intermittently. It has not opened all the way yet but I am certain it was fully closed and latched before the car was in motion. I have heard of other people experiencing the same thing.
When driving and operating the vehicle with the top door the door becomes ajar on the passenger and driver side with a slight bump in the rose.
The passenger door has, on at least ten occasions, partially opened while the car was moving . It opened in the first phase like it is when not fully closed. My mechanic says the latch is bad and will at some point open all the way. Volvo does. Or seem anxious to address the problem. When the Volvo dealership repair was told of the problem on at least two, occasions, they said there was no problem.
While driving on the interstate, the passenger side door popped open. The convertible top was down when this happened. We were driving about 65mph when this happened. Car has never been in any accidents.
While on highway at highway speed, the driver door moved outward as if it was opening. The open door warning light flashed on the dash. Makes you feel like you're about to fall out of the car. Had to stop and close the door again. Would hate to have this happen while cornering.
I have had the passenger door open on its own while locked and driving on the expressway at least 2 times with no one in the seat. The dome light goes on and the warning light on the dash lights up that door is ajar. The passenger door has also opened on its own when its been parked (off) in my garage at least 2 times as well. Dome light on for what could be hours (overnight)! unsafe and a potential battery drainer.

The "door open" warning and interior lights come on and the door slumps slightly ajar (even the window drops like when you open the door). This happens only with the top down, driving at highway speeds. Can be either driver or passenger side. Locked or unlocked. Doors are securely closed beforehand.
Without notice, the driver's door comes unlocks itself and unlatched which results in the door opening while driving. I have researched this and it appears to be a fairly common problem. Https://volvoforums. Com/forum/Volvo-c70-14/c70-door-unlocks-opens-itself-while-driving-83545/.
The passenger door unlatches after hitting mild bumps in the road. The door does not fully open due to the secondary safety latch but it still represents a dangerous condition especially if a person is sitting in the passenger seat.
While driving, periodically, both doors (not simultaneously but it has occurred in both doors multiple times) will come ajar. Most often, this occurs at highway speeds and when a bump occurs to slightly jolt the car. The door does not come all the way open but it is clearly ajar. A warning light comes on on the dash and the interior lights come on. While the door doesn't come completely open, this causes a dangerous situation as it distracts the driver, causes you to pull over on a highway and then re-enter that highway from the shoulder. I always keep a hand on the door in case it swing completely open, which means I only have 1 hand on the wheel. In researching this issue, I have noted it reported by multiple people across multiple model years. It is a consistent and constant complaint with the car. It presents a dangerous situation and is an obvious design flaw. I'm sure the fix is relatively simply and can't be too costly as the car has been out of production for several years. Volvo is well aware of the issue and I am disappointed that a brand that advertises and emphasizes safety has not taken action to correct this issue. I'm confident that our government will put the safety of the citizens first and force Volvo's hand in fixing the design flaw. In my amateur opinion, the door on this car is heavier than most and, when bounced, the weight of the door overpowers the latch. The has occurred over 20, and likely over 25 times in the 20,000 miles that I have owned the car (approximately 18 months). I used the most recent occurrence for the date asked for below ("when did this happen"). Thank you for your time and attention to this matter.
While driving at highway speeds, passenger door suddenly comes unlatched. Doors are automatically locked when driving. The information system reports a door open, the interior lights flicker on and off with the door vibrating by the wind at 70 mph. Also, the window starts going up and down about a half inch like it would normally function when the door is opened for clearance. This has happened on a road trip, and was in a place where it was difficult to find a safe place to exit the highway, the door, after closing, appears to shut properly, and the lock seems to function. Then, when there is a bump or dip in the road, the door becomes unlatched again. This is very scary to have the door come unlatched for no reason at all. There was not a passenger on this trip, so it was not accidentally opened. There was a small dog with me, and she was terrified by the noise, and the window movement. I was terrified that my dog would go out the open door. There are other complaints of this happening to other owners, so it is not a rare occurrence. Volvo should issue a recall to repair the doors to prevent them from opening unexpectedly. Reference NHTSA id numbers 10680779 and 10616590.
Driver door opens while driving. It happens while locked or unlocked, top up, windows up. It has happened in city and on highway. Traveling at high speeds as well as low speeds. It comes ajar and the interior light comes on and message that driver door is open. . It happens intermittently but is becoming more and more frequent until now it is almost daily. It began probably 2 years ago.

This car is a convertible. When the top is down and I hit a bump, the driver door pops open, door ajar message appears, and dome lights come on. Like the previous driver complaint, I am forced to pull over to re-close the door. I reported this to the dealer back in 2012. We looked to see if there were any active recalls. None then and none currently. Since then, the door pops open 50% of the time when the top is down. The car has never had structural damage to it. The local auto body shop recommended I post to this site. I agree with the previous post: "there are many examples of similar problems on the Volvo forums" suggesting a systemic issue. . Read more...
The passenger side door has opened while driving on over 12 occasions under varying speed and road conditions. Several have been at 65 mph during highway operation, and at less than 30 mph rural roadways. The roof has been both up and down, and the doors have been locked and unlocked. The interior lights suddenly come on and the passenger door open warning light is illuminated. I have had to pull over and shut the door each time. If I wasn't any experienced driver I shudder to think what might have happened.
Doors unlock & randomly pop open during highway driving. Only "safety latch" keeps them from actually swinging out free and clear. Very alarming and disconcerting.
This car is a convertible, and when the top is down/open, and I am driving at speeds exceeding 25mph, both the driver and passenger door can spontaneously open. The doors do not fly open, but the "door open" warning light comes on, the interior lights come on, and the window drops slightly as it does when you open the door. Then, I am forced to pull over to re-close the doors. This happens whether or not the doors are locked, and I am confident they are fully secured before this happens. This happens more often on the passenger side than the driver side, but it has happened on both sides. This was reported to Volvo on 6/17/2016, and they indicated that there are no outstanding recalls for this issue. There are many examples of similar problems on the Volvo forums, which suggests a systematic safety issue. E. G. . Read more...
While driving either the passenger door or the driver door suddenly becomes unlatched even when locked and the information message system comes on saying passenger (or driver) door is open and cabin lights come on. I am required to pull over and resecure doors. This issue has escalated to a nearly daily occurance. This problem should be fixed by a recall as doors are not supposed to automatically come open on a 7 year old car that has never been in an accident. I have made an appt with the herb gordon Volvo dealer in silver spring MD for an assessment.
The doors open while driving. Even if they are locked. The information system gives a message drivers door open or passenger door open and the interior lights come on while driving. This happened to me recently 4 times while driving from kent, ohio to naples, florida. The doors were firmly closed and locked and hours later came open by them self. I went to the Volvo dealer in bonita springs and spoke to brian gatzki the assistant service manager. He told me the problem was in a door actuator and they were aware of this problem and he claimed this is a wear and tear item costing around a $1000 to repair. I asked what wear and tear could cause the doors to electronically open while driving. He had no reply. I also explained that this is a very unsafe condition and if there isn't a recall, there should be. I called Volvo also on 12-11-14 and spoke to lisa who also gave me the run around. I feel this condition is a common problem with theses cars and is an accident waiting to happen, can cause injury or death and should be repaired by Volvo at no cost to all affected owners. Owners who have paid for this repair should be refunded. This is a safety problem caused by Volvo and should be repaired by Volvo.
