40 Electrical System problem of the 2006 Volvo S40

Failure Date: 08/23/2008

My 1 1/2 years old Volvo S40 did this twice, shortly after starting it and moving it for a couple of miles. It displayed the message "brake failure stop car safely", "anti-skid system failure", "reduced engine performance". The car could not go more than 15 mph. After parking it, I could not restart the engine and the messages kept repeating in random order. The first time that I took it to the dealer they said that they changed the computer message module (the mechanic carried a box with many plugs in it, just to show me what it looked like). But just after 500 miles, the problem re-appeared. Now the car is in the repair shop, and people do not know what to do with it for two weeks.

I have a Volvo S40 2005 and the radio/cd player just blanks out. When I start the car the radio/cd won't play. It will power up and the display will show, but no sound comes on. It has done this three times. I have to totally turn the car off and let it sit for a while before it will work again.

42 Electrical System problem of the 2005 Volvo S40

Failure Date: 07/12/2006

The s-40 was on the highway and the message came on stating engine failure. I pulled over in the breakdown lane and shut the car off. I restarted the car and was able to drive home. I made an appointment with the dealer to look into the problem which occurred at that time, today I experienced the same and now the cd does not work properly. I made an appointment to bring the s 40 t5 in for service to check the problem again.

This type of defect was identified as NHTSA recall number 01v169000. The dealer refuses to repair for free. The resistor that is defective and causing the problem. 44 Electrical System problem of the 2002 Volvo S40

Failure Date: 06/01/2005

In September of 2004, I began experiencing problems with my Volvo S40 sedan. The vehicle would shut off while I was operating it for no apparent reason. I took the vehicle to the dealer twice and then contacted the Volvo customer care department following an incident when the vehicle shut off while I was in a very busy intersection in town. I narrowly avoided a very serious crash. They sent a regional technician to the Volvo dealer. Volvo had the car for an extended period of time and said while they could not determine the problem, they replaced several parts. I experienced no further problems until June of 2005 when the exact problem resurfaced. When I took the car back to the dealer and contacted Volvo customer care, they indicated to me that they still could not tell what was wrong with the car and so they would not "throw parts" at a car. My husband and I are both in law enforcement and know firsthand the devastation of car crashes. We felt so unsafe in the vehicle, that we decided to trade it in July of 2005. . . . A very costly and financially devastating result. (we lost over $4,300) however, I felt too guilty to sell the car to anyone privately. I was so disappointed that Volvo refused to deal with this problem and left me no other choices than to drive in a very unsafe car, or face financial devastation.

48 Electrical System problem of the 2000 Volvo S40

Failure Date: 08/22/2001

While driving 40 mph, my car engine stopped. After being in the shop for a month, they detected that the tackometer was bad and replace it. This is a major safety issue in that I do not feel comfortable driving the car anymore. It has not occurred again but I think this needs to be researched. Regarding the radio, we have had problems with this over the last year. I have had them look at the problem at least 12 times. We are having static throughout the chicagoland area.

49 Electrical System problem of the 2001 Volvo S40

Failure Date: 11/03/2000

For months, the service light comes on in the car. I have taken the car in for repair 6 times. Each time, the light comes back on. Volvo engineer came in Friday to supervise the repair of car. Saturday evening the light went on. Two weeks ago, dealer loaned me a 2003 v40 for several days while they worked on car. Surprise! service engine light went on in loaner car. During last visit to dealer, two people in front of me were coming in for service engine light! there is a problem with these cars. I am on a lease, and asking factory to terminate lease.
