3 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2012 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 07/20/2023

These headlight assemblies commonly develop significant water ingress problems as they age. Owners report issues in wet climates even when these cars were relatively new, resulting in bulb ignition problems as water finds it way into the ballasts, resulting in high-voltage shorting. The water in the headlight housings also "fogs" up the forward lens, resulting in a poor distribution of light out the front, both poor for the driver and dazzling for oncoming traffic. The headlights can work fine for weeks or months, and then a wet week comes along and 1 or both headlights fail to operate or work but poorly and blind oncoming traffic. If caught after dark in the rain the headlights often fail to function. If this could be solved with new headlight assemblies for a reasonable price, I would not consider this a major safety issue, unfortunately, they are difficult to source, astronomically priced (~$1100 per assembly), and replacing them doesn't seem to fix this problem for many owners of these cars. The way these assemblies are vented from the factory seems to be problematic for water ingress and the position of the ballasts ensures that any significant water ingress causes the ballast to short internally. I believe that the atmospheric vent on these must be positioned in such a way that they suck water in as they cool if its raining. The all-halogen assemblies for these cars work better, likely because there's no ballast for the water to leak into and more heat from the bulb to quickly evaporate the water out of the same assembly design. The poorly designed housing is "saved" by the simpler electronics and thermal output of the bulbs. Unfortunately, different factory programming is required to run the all-halogen assemblies. A recall should be issued to replace all of these gimmicky (and distracting) "steerable" xenon headlights with the halogen versions, with the reprogramming effort included in the recall.

5 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2012 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 06/10/2021

When I purchased the 2012 Volvo S60 back in June we started to drive and it said low beam out and later found out that it was the drivers side low beam took it back and they tried a new headlight but didn't work but we found the problem it was the ballast to the hid bulb was bad changed it bam fixed 2 days later the light came back on and said low beam out but this time it was the passenger side took it back and they checked and said that it was the samething the low beam hid ballast so got that they changed it and bam fixed well left there and less than a week later the light comes back in saying low beam out and only its the same side again this time the passenger side, so my question and concern is I can't ve the only one having this issue with my headlights causing me to drive with high beams on which isn't safe so please get back to me with an answer I believe there is something faulty with these S60 r-design hid low beam headlights please help.

6 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2012 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 06/10/2021

When I first bought this Volvo there was condensation in both of the headlights then took it for a test drive and I really liked it and when I got back the dealer said if I was to buy it he would take care of both headlights so I assumed that he did but I bought it and left and was driving and then a code came on in the car saying low beam out I was like OH shit so took it back to them they had me go buy $120 light bulb and that wasn't the problem they did some working and testing and said that it was the low beam ballast so I bought 1 for the drivers side and that fixed that problem but then not even a week later the same light came on saying low beam out, took it back and they said that it was the same thing on opposite side on passenger side so they said order the part and we'll fix it I did that took it back to them and they said it was fixed not even a day later and the light was back on swing low beam out I'm thinking that there is an issue that has to deal with some kind of recall with these lights cause there is no way that they should break that easy or quick so please get back to me and let me kno thank you.

10 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2003 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 08/03/2015

I am surprised there has not been a recall issued for certain model year Volvos relative to the center dash module losing all communication apparently due to failed solder connections (based on chat-rooms, Volvo specific). I understand components can fail, but the sheer number of failures and the failure mode is beyond typical or expected failures. The failure mode causes most or all dash gauges, indicators and lights to fail, including the speedometer. These failures apparently occur randomly, and at any age/mileage.

11 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2007 Volvo S60

14 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2002 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 02/17/2012

Purchased used S60 in November 2011 with 137,000 miles. A few weeks later various problems manifested: scrambled letters in dashboard message, driver door locks intermittently worked, radio self tuned to different station, speedometer giving false readings or stuck at current speed or reading zero, fuel gauge malfunction, all instruments on panel flickered, all instruments went "dark" while driving. At first restarting car would clear problem. Then frequency between failures increased. Just before complete failure - car needed to be "cold" for instruments to work - with instruments failing once engine warmed. Finally in February 2012 at about 147,021 miles the panel completely failed while driving - giving driver no readings (speed, fuel, temp, mileage, or warning indicators) and would not reset. Internet forums of Volvo owners suggested it was a driver information module failure. Owners forums pinpointed 3 probable causes of a dim failure - 1. Loose connection of the motorola microchip, 2. Loose capacitor/resistor 3. Lack of protection from heat/heat transfer to individual prongs in microchip or between capacitor/resistor and the circuit board. Some electrically savvy owners fixed by reflowing/resoldering/heat protecting said components. Our local Volvo dealer confirmed dim failure and quoted aprox. $1500 for a new instrument cluster and 3 hrs. Labor. We chose to send dim/instrument cluster out for a refurbishment to baa remanufacturing inc. On reinstallation warning message read "sra/airbag-service urgent". Asked dealer to clear dim code first, then from srs module per baa-reman instructions. Dealer job description/receipt stated they cleared codes dim 0001, 0003, 0005, 0006, e003, srs 00d4, e003. No problems with locks/radio/instrument cluster since remanufacture in the last 10,000 miles/5 months. Volvo's original dim circuit board poorly designed/assembled.

15 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2004 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 01/12/2012

When turning a corner, the engine stopped, steering stopped working and lights on dashboard come on. This happened a second time two days later. Took to independent mechanic and he checked all work he had done in the past plus checked the whole car out and he could not find why the car stopped. Two days later the car again stalled out when in traffic - engine stopped, steering stopped working and lights on dashboard came on. Last two times this happened I was driving on a straight road. This has happened 5 times now in the last week. All times engine stopped working, I was driving between 10 and 40 miles per hour. After researching this problem, I found out that my vehicle had been recalled and at 53,333 miles the fuel pressure sensor was replaced by the dealer. Now 42,000 miles later it appears that it is once again the fuel pressure sensor. This is very dangerous especially since I do a lot of highway driving and also live in an area where children have been know to run out into the street. Not only is there a possibility of a car accident, but also the possibility of a child being hit if I cannot turn the car quickly to avoid the child. At this point I am afraid to drive the car and fell very unsafe even though Volvos are know for their safety. After reading numerous reports of many people having this problem with their 2004 S60 Volvos it makes me wonder why Volvo is not correcting this problem on all 2004 Volvo S60s that are having this same problem. My mechanic is checking on this problem and will replace next week if this is the real issue. Sometimes doors lock for no reason at all. Also I have had to replace the rear lights on this vehicle several times. Seems much more than normal.

16 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2004 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 09/03/2008

About every 2-3 month when I go to start my Volvo S60 the front left light blows out. I have had my car for a little over a year and have had to replace the headlamps 5 times. The first time I changed the lights I did not wear gloves so it could have possible been my fault. Everytime after I have worn gloves to change the lights and still have the same problem.

17 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2004 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 06/15/2008

Purchased auto new. It would seem that I have had some of the same problems mentioned by others. Car stalling on highway at 65 miles per hour, twice, very scary. Pulled off and restarted. (fuel pressure sensor malfunction) seems there is a recall however when I inquired my VIN # was not included. Costly repair as must purchase part from dealer. Driver side head lamp, low beam, has been replaced so often lost track, over half a dozen times, is out now! have never replaced passenger side lamp! I point out the other S60's I see on the road with a headlamp light out to my kids as a game now.

18 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2001 Volvo S60

Right front power window inoperable from either side switch control. Power door locks do not respond to remote. Ambient temprarture readout inoperable. Dealer claimed to have upgrade component software. Position bulb outage error text: replaced right rear position bulb.
