1 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2001 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 04/30/2021

Terrible gas smell every time I drive it. I got someone to check it out, there is gas leaking from the fuel pump. This person put some putty over the leak which stopped the smell but this is not safe. I see a recall for the fuel pump but it says my car doesn't have a current recall.

2 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2012 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 05/18/2020

There was one incident that my car was not accelerating on the highway. The car would stall for a bit and when I tried to maintain the same speed I was going at, I would press the gas pedal and the speed would not change, it continued to slow down. Fortunately, I was able to pull over to the side of the highway and put my car on park. This when I put the car in neutral to check the rpm, to see if the gas was working. The rpm would go up every time I pressed on the gas pedal. From there, I turned my car off and on, and tried to see if the car was able to accelerate. Once I turned the car back on, the check engine light had turned on. I managed to get home from work driving on the left lane and at a slow speed. That is when I scheduled an appointment with my mechanic. The following day, the mechanic had found out that there was an issue with my fuel pump, there was not enough pressure. Upon doing some research on the issue, I had found out that the NHTSA had reported a recall with the same issue for the same model and year of my car (https://static. Nhtsa. Gov/odi/rcl/2011/rcdnn-11v303-8835. Pdf). I searched my VIN number to see if my car fell under the recall period listed on the website, and it had reported only a door latch issue and not the fuel pump. I would like the NHTSA to investigate further into the issue with the fuel pump, more specifically, determine whether or not the time period for issue stated under the recall needs to be extended even further.

3 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2015 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 07/01/2019

The low pressure fuel sensor on these vehicles is known by manufacturer to fail. This failure can cause hard start conditions, taking over 5 seconds at times to start the vehicle. The main danger of this comes from the fact this is a vehicle equipped with auto stop/start technology. I have experienced near misses due to coming to a stop at a stop sign and then taking over 5 seconds on occasion for the vehicle to restart the engine. On vehicles with worn fuel pumps this issue could manifest as loss of power under heavy engine load, such as climbing a hill or accelerating from a stop. The failure mode is open circuit, meaning at some point prior to failure there is also a chance of high resistance which on a fuel system component could lead to excessive heat and fire. The manufacturer is aware of the issue and has issued an extended warranty for the part was offered for 8 years 80,000 miles. I do not believe this is an appropriate response and a recall should be issued for the part due to its safety related consequences.

The vehicle was not taken to a dealer for diagnostic testing or repairs. The failure mileage was 220,000.

5 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2006 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 09/03/2018

A few months back, this vehicle was leaking gasoline from the area of fuel pump. The fuel pump is located under the rear seat of the vehicle, so there was also a strong odor inside the car. The vehicle fuel tank was filled just prior to this happening. So, for 20 miles, myself and my wife were subjected to gasoline fumes, and at the same time, raw gasoline was spilling underneath the car while driving. My repair shop diagnosed, and repaired car by installing a new fuel pump. After further investigation , I have found that Volvo cars did recall, and repair some models of 2003 and 2005. . . Even my 2004 was reimbursed for this. I believe that Volvo knows that's there is a part defect, not a part failure. . . This is a stationary, hard composite plastic that is the same culprit as the earlier years involved. I am asking the NHTSA to further investigate Volvo cars to insure that no one else has this scare. It could have been catastrophic for myself and all others on the roads that day.

6 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2003 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 01/01/2018

Fuel leaking from tank (most likely top of tank), when fuel pump is operating. Upon some search, I found that there was a recall for this problem for the S60 from 2001 to 2009. But for some reason my VIN is not covered. Seems like there's some loophole that they managed to use, why not all vins should be covered. Its clearly a very dangerous failure.

7 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2004 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 01/06/2016

Fuel pump leaked. Smell gas. Scared it may catch fire. Expensive repair. Volvo is refusing to honor recall because (1) vehicle purchased in NJ (though has spent life in va) and (2) work done at non-Volvo mechanic. Due to the severity of the issue, I took it to the nearest mechanic rather than risk driving it to dealer and having it catch fire.

15 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2008 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 04/01/2015

I was driving on the freeway in southern California heading to san diego during evening rush hour traffic. The traffic had come to a complete stop and as traffic was starting again as I pressed the accelerator the car engine began to sputter. There were no dashboard warning lights or indicators to give us any information on what was going on with the car. I only knew that I had no engine power. The gasoline gauge showed that I had about half a tank of gas left. We tried to restart the engine a couple of time. The engine would sputter and then die. Fortunately, I was in the slower right hand lane and was able to pull safely off to the shoulder. If I had been the faster freeway lanes, with this sudden loss of engine power, we would not have been safe and the results may have been very tragic! we were towed to a Volvo dealer in carlsbad, California. There the dealer found that the car has a faulty fuel pump and sensors. With the faulty sensor, while the gasoline tank appeared on the display gauge on the instrument panel to be half full, the tank was actually almost empty. Currently, (as of April 6,2015) the car is still with the Volvo dealer waiting for the part to arrive from the east coast. My concern is that this is a relatively new car - 2008 model with low mileage. I am concerned that the fuel pump and the sensors are defective parts for this model car. I appreciate any assistance or advice you can provide me on this issue.

20 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2005 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 09/15/2014

The car had difficulty in starting all of a sudden. It appeared to be an electronic ignition problem. After a few starts, warning signals started coming on. First was "engine under performance" and then it was "break failure". The car was stopped and towed to Volvo dealer. The dealer indicated that the car's fuel pump / lines were designed and installed outside the weather shielded housing. The salt used for snow melting corrodes these lines and several cars show up with this issue. So they replaced them and moved them to within the weather protected area. Searching the internet, I found several Volvo cars of this era have this problem and several occurred while driving - both loss of speed and break failure. My car was well maintained, regular oil changes with the synthetic oil and maintained by Volvo dealer or specialist. I also use the recommended 91 or 93 octane gas, so it cannot be attributed to lax maintenance or lesser quality fuel. The online forums seem to have all kinds of diagnostics for this problem. If it was a design fault at manufacturer, as advised by the Volvo dealer, I would think it would should be investigated for recall.

22 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2004 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 03/21/2014

I had my car in for service at my local Volvo repair shop and one of the items I had them investigate was a fuel smell. They told me they found a crack at fuel pump sender rh side. They mentioned that they thought there was a recall for this since they have seen it several times before and that I should contact my Volvo dealer. I just looked online and found what they were talking about but it does not list the state where I purchased the vehicle and reside? I am the original owner. The repair shop did contact a local dealer for me and the dealer told them that there was not a recall? I guess I will contact some other local dealers this week and see what they say? seems like colorado should have been added to this recall every state near us is part of it. If I cant get this repaired under the recall what should I do to make it happen?.

23 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2003 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 01/31/2014

Some models had a recall notice for a cracked leaking fuel pump (pe09039). This exact thing happened to our car. Volvo refuses to cover the vehicle under the recall because it was not sold in one of the states listed. The problem is exactly as described in the recall. This doesn't seem right as it the same safety issue. Please let me know if there is any further action that can be taken.

25 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2002 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 07/23/2013

Took vehicle in question to my mechanic due to starting issue and fuel smell. He diagnosed a significant fuel leak due to a cracked flange on the fuel pump. He found there was a recall for this exact problem for this exact make, model and year of Volvo. Called Volvo and they rejected request for recall repair due to VIN number not being included in recall. I believe this vehicle should be subject to the recall regardless of the VIN number because it has the exact same diagnosis as is described by the recall. The notion that a maker can exclude a vehicle which exhibits the problems to be fixed by a recall based on extraneous criteria is fundamentally flawed. The vehicle in question is unsafe to drive and there is a recall to fix the safety issue for the make, model and year in question. That the vehicle is excluded based on extraneous criteria is reckless regard for my safety and potential bystanders!.

26 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2002 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 05/21/2013

Fuel pump leak , dealer told me it was recalled for cracked fuel pump under campaign # 07v152000. R176 and car is now too old to have free repairs I was never notified of recall and the car was purchased used but from a Volvo new car dealer, can I be made whole?.

30 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2002 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 08/27/2012

Began to notice strong fuel smell inside and outside the vehicle. Also noticed that starting the vehicle when engine is cold became more difficult. Researched various forums and NHTSA and discovered that Volvo has had 2 recalls for fuel pumps. My vehicle exhibited same symptoms as detailed in both NHTSA recalls. Called Volvo at 800-458-1552 as instructed in the NHTSA recall notice. Informed the representative that vehicle exhibited the symptoms detailed in the recall notice. I was informed that my vehicle VIN number was not part of recall. Also contacted local Volvo dealer regarding recall notice. Dealer would diagnose problem - if part of the recall, they would replace. Dealer called back, informed me that my vehicle was not part of recall. I cancelled appointment for diagnosis. Another local repair shop specializing in european vehicles verified that fuel pump has cracks and is leaking fuel. A full recall to include all VIN's should be issued. The fact that there have been two previous recalls for the same issue shows that there is a systemic flaw with this part.

34 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2002 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 07/09/2012

I am a resident of texas. I just bought a 2002 Volvo S60 about three months ago, and I've noticed a strong fuel smell in and around car. There is a leak in the fuel pump and when car is parked, fuel forms a puddle under car. It is extremely dangerous to drive a car in this condition, both for myself but also for the general public. I searched online about this issue and found the following recall information from the national highway traffic safety administration website: make: Volvo model: S60 model year: 2002 manufacturer: Volvo cars of n. A. Llc. Mfr's report date: Dec 17, 2009 NHTSA campaign id number: 09v483000 NHTSA action number: pe09039 component: fuel system, gasoline:delivery:fuel pump recall states that as remedy for this issue: "dealers will inspect the fuel pump installed in the vehicle, and if necessary replace the fuel pump with a part of a modified design. This service will be performed free of charge. The safety recall began on January 15, 2010.
