2 Tire Sidewall problem of the 2005 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 08/14/2009

While driving on I-81 in virginia my left rear tire disintegrated. I was able to move right to safety and when doing so the upper half of the tire rolled past me and came to rest 50 feet ahead of the car against the railing. All tires are new, with less than 200 miles on them. I called 911, the state police came and called a wrecker. I was towed and received a replacement tire at a car shop and returned home. On inspection it appeared that the sidewall complete gave a way. Fortunately a piece of the rubber stayed on the rim thus protecting the rim from damage. This should not have happened and I would like you to investigate. Fortunately nobody was hurt but this could have been a very serious accident. The car a 2005 Volvo S60 in fine condition had been bought from carmax a week earlier and had been fully inspected prior to sale.

6 Tire Sidewall problem of the 2001 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 08/31/2005

I experienced a problem with three out of a set of four goodyear american eagle tires purchased at walmart in north carolina on 09/25/2003. These were 60,000 mile rated (tread wear rating 420) radial tires size: p205/55r16. These were for my Volvo s-60. . . The manufacturer's recommended size. I kept the recommended psi @ 38 tire pressure. I had them rotated and rebalanced several times, usually at about 5,000/6,000 mile intervals. During my most recent service for rotation and rebalancing on August 31, the walmart store in roanoke, va brought this defect to my attention. Three of the tires had developed severe and potentially dangerous cracks on the inside sidewall between the tread and the rim circling the inside of the sidewall and appeared to be a "blow-out" potential hazard. The manufacturer's production code was: dot pjt24ahr2403. Walmart adjusted and replaced this set with the same tire that they had in stock. I reported the problem to goodyear and was given a claim # 789726. I phoned them to ask what could have been done to avoid this problems or to avoid this same problem for occurring on the current set that walmart had put on. They told me that nothing could have been done or could be guaranteed on the newer set. I think further investigation should be done by NHTSA as this could be a very serious problem for other drivers caught unaware to this problem. Please advise.

The sidewall of the tire is very weak on the back right rear tire. The owner was parallel parking and the right rear tire rubbed against the curb, and the tire ripped. This is a new vehicle, 2005 Volvo, the car was bought in April. There was no prior problems with the tire before this incident. The owner is calling the dealer after this phone call. The tire is a continental conti touring contact. The speed was about an 1/2 mph. The owner is going to get ahold of the service department and see what they recommend. The consumer stated the manufacturer was not willing to assist.

8 Tire Sidewall problem of the 2002 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 02/04/2005

I have a Volvo S60 with 17" low profile pirelli p6 four season tires. I have 23,000 miles on the car and have had to replace 5 tires for side wall failure and unexplained flat tires( no punctures) I found a web site that lists 12 pages of complaints by other Volvo and Audi owners with the same failures and mysterious flats. Pirelli and Volvo have not responded to the problem.

9 Tire Sidewall problem of the 2004 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 10/25/2004

Driver's side front tire blew out while traveling at 55 mph. Driver side rear tire was also defective, it had a bubble on the sidewall.

10 Tire Sidewall problem of the 2004 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 10/25/2004

Bought Volvo S60 awd from Volvo of danbury July 2004. September 1, 2004 noticed a buble on the rear drivers side tire. On 10/25/2004 my wife had a blow out on i84 on the front drivers side tire while driving on a newly paved highway road. Nearly injuring herself and cars around her on the 3 lane highway she barely made it over to the breakdown lane. The entire wall of the tire was seperate from the rest of the tire all the way around. The tire is a pirelli p6 fourseasons tire. P235/45 r17. Once the doughnut tire was put on I immediately drove to the nearest Volvo dealer where the car was bought, and they would replace the tire but I would have to pay for both tires at a cost over 300 in total. I stated that the car was brand new and only had 8k miles, and they said I would need to contact pirelli. I called pirelli and they said I would need to contact an authorized dealer for inspection. I called the authorized dealer and they said there was nothing they could report because all was due to road hazards. My wife did not hit anything, therefore these tires are not made for drinving on normal roads especially with only 8k miles on the tires. I put a complaint into Volvo corportate and they have not returned my call. My concern is for my wifes safety and the financial burden of replacing new tires especially in a car that is known for safety, and for the amount of money we paid for the car. No one is taking responsibility and Volvo keeps putting these tires on their cars that are going to cause a serious accident to either my wife and or the cars that are driving next to her.

11 Tire Sidewall problem of the 2002 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 07/10/2004

I have a 2002 Volvo S60 equipped with pirelli p6 235/45 r17's as oem option. I have less than 25,000 miles on my car and I have replaced 3 of these tires already. The first one blew out with less than 5,000 miles driven, the second one at 18,500 and the last one, which almost cost me to lose control of my vehicle on a major highway, with 22,500 driven miles. All three failures were on the sidewall of the tire and none could be repaired. The p6's supposedly come with 50,000 miles warranty on them. Volvo customer service claims failures are due to road conditions in ne USA and also due to the fact that these are "high performance tires": they seem to forget that tire safety is the basic performance criteria. I did some research on the internet and other "high performance tires" do not seem to fail as often as pirelli p6's. I'm convinced that these tires are junk and I will replace all four before winter driving conditions start.

12 Tire Sidewall problem of the 2002 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 03/04/2004

While vehicle was parked rear side tire sidewall separated. The dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.

13 Tire Sidewall problem of the 2001 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 06/25/2003

The mileage on the perelli p6 tires for Volvo S60 t5 is only 11,000 miles. During a crusing on the freeway, the driver heard a loud "pop" noise inside the car. After the car was driven home (within 5 miles), the driver notice a flat tire short time later. I went to Volvo's dealer service department on 6/25/03 to see if I can get some assistance or explaination on the causes of my tire problems. The same thing happened 2 times before on the other tires. I was surprised how little help I got from the service consultant working there. It appears that they don't even care to hear or discuss my problems. Later on, I find out information from NHTSA that other drivers also experienced problems with pirelli p6. Since I don't feel safe driving on these factory installed tires, I decide to replace them the following day.

14 Tire Sidewall problem of the 2003 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 06/15/2003

The grief from this car literally began on the way home from the show room, as the seat belts were not functioning. They required four visits to the service department to correct the problem. The issue of the tires being unsafe became apparent when the car was two weeks old, with under 1000 miles on the odometer front & rear bumpers separate from vehicle , with little or no provocation. Tires self destruct at speeds of 2-4 mph (while parking), if a curb is touched. I'm informed that tires have weak sidewalls & to replace tires (at my expense). Air conditioning required three visits to repair shop & is still not getting the car as cold as it should in hot weather. I should add that I'm also informed that replacement tires will diminish the handling of the car.

15 Tire Sidewall problem of the 2001 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 05/01/2003

I recently brought my Volvo S60 for 15000 mile service(my car had 16200) and was informed that I needed 4 new tires. How shocked we were. The dealer informed us that this was pirelli and we must contact them. I did and was told to see a authorized pirelli dealer. Brought the car in waited and then told me they will only take 20%off. While I waited for tire dealer to return my call bubbles formed in the tires. This can't be safe . Volvo prides themselves on safe cars. How safe can they be with bad tires. Pirelli and Volvo better watch out. Remember Ford and firestone. They are only a few miles behind. No fatalities yet!!!.

16 Tire Sidewall problem of the 2003 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 01/18/2003

The side walls were very weak, the slightest touch/brush caused them to go flat. Tires were replaced. The replacement tire had a bubble. Model type 4 seasons.

17 Tire Sidewall problem of the 2002 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 08/11/2002

I have a 2002 Volvo S60 awd with pirelli p6 tires. Back in January I had a blowout after hitting a bump in the road. Now the 3 remaining tires have developed large bubbles in the sidewalls. All 4 of my rims are bent. I have complained to Volvo and pirelli tire. They blame the road conditions in the northeast. They offered no assistance. I have found other people with the same complaint. Over the weekend another tire went flat as one of the bubbles ruptured. As the car is not drivable, it sits in my driveway as I can't get anywhere with Volvo.

18 Tire Sidewall problem of the 2002 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 04/19/2002

Tire bubble developed on sidewall of tire without any impact. Car taken to dealer for review and service manager said this was a safety issue and tire needed to be replaced. Tire dealer would not replace tire under warranty. Said I would have to pay for it and then fight it out with pirelli. Many people have had the same problem. Tire only has 1350 mile on it.

19 Tire Sidewall problem of the 2002 Volvo S60

Consumer noticed bubbles in the tires sidewall. Took vehicle to dealer, and the dealer stated that sidewalls are failing.

20 Tire Sidewall problem of the 2001 Volvo S60

I have replaced 3 pirelli p6 235/45 r17 tires due to bubbling of the sidewall. I complained to the dealer about this and they stated that they knew of no particular problem with this tire or car model. I then found on the web that someone had already complained to the NHTSA about this very same problem. I have e-mailed Volvo and pirelli and I am awaiting reply. However, the safety issue appears serious enough to warrant my contacting the NHTSA.
