City safety feature is triggering on intermittently with no reason to trigger. It occurs when initially accelerating. City safety applies the brakes and stops the car violently. Occurs when light or dark. Has occurred several times within the past week. The feature can be manually turned off and now is with every ignition start. The default is for the feature be on, so turning off is required every time the car is turned on.

Volvo arrived at the hiking trailhead parking lot at approximately 10 miles an hour, slowed down more to select parking space then turn right into space in front of a cement outhouse. Space had a cement parking block. As the car was about to come to a complete stop in the space, it suddenly accelerated on its own as if the accelerator was press all the way overcoming the cement block and crashing into the outhouse. Both driver and passenger airbags were deployed. The driver never took the foot off the brake when the car accelerated. The automated braking system never deployed. Prior to the accident, the low battery warning light was on but the battery was checked out by a professional to be fully charged. We walk away from the accident bruised with back and chest pains from the seat belt but considered ourselves lucky. Had we not parked with a cement outhouse five feet in front of us two spaces over, we would have accelerated into an open field and into a forest of trees.

As far back as 2011, there were complaints that Volvos equipped with the city safety system would suddenly stop or slow down for no reason. This same situation happened to me in September 2018. As I was making a left turn to cross an intersection, my Volvo S60 suddenly came to a halt. There was nothing in front of me. I was not sure what had happened as I heard a grinding noise. I pulled the car over and as I was about to get out of the car, I noticed a warning on the dash that the city safety had gone off. For some unknown reason, my Volvo had decided to just stop. Fortunately for me, there were no cars approaching the intersection from the opposite side and no one was behind me. Had there been, I could easily been rear ended or side swiped. The following day, I immediately contact Volvo and schumacher Volvo in west palm beaches. Despite providing a full explanation to Volvo, they refused to comment or address the matter. Schumacher took my car and did a full inspection, what they found was that the camera was dirty and they had to remove and clean it. Now let me be clear, the inside of my windshield is spotless. The outside is clean. What schumacher was referring to was the camera inside the unit that is sealed up against the top of the inside windshield. How could this camera even get dirty? this is the reason the city safety system could have caused a false positive. The system could incorrectly assume there was something in front of the car and put on the brakes. After schumacher had cleaned the camera, they stated the system had been tested and was working. I asked the service manager, richard, if we could test my car out when I picked it up. Unbelievably, his response was: Volvo won't let us test the city safety system. It is far too dangerous. We cannot do anything that would put our customers in danger or damage a customer's vehicle.

Accelerating on interstate and all of a sudden complety lost engine power. Engine would continue running, but would not accelerate. Could have easily gotten into a wreck if there had been more traffic on the interstate. Ended up getting towed and having to replace the throttle unit which cost almost $1000, this could have been a very dangerous situation with a very bad outcome if traffic had been heavier.

Car jerks and clunks when switching gears. Its starting to grind and clack in 1-2 gear and I hops around the rpms line crazy.
On Feb. 3rd, I was pulling into a parking space in front of a store when my S60 r type Volvo began to accelerate on its own and reached very high rpm. My foot was not even on the accelerator as the car normally idles fast enough to perform parking maneuvers. I hit the brake but the car continued to move. It jumped the sidewalk; hit the building and proceeded to dig a hole in the flowerbed at the store's front. This all happened in the length of a parking space. I can¿t remember whether I shut the ignition off or of the engine stopped on its own shortly after the collision. Neither the airbags nor the pedestrian avoidance braking system deployed. I hit the building so hard that the brick cracked inside and out of the structure. The door is still inoperable.
Etm ( electronic throttle module) did not work properly. Engine management system did not correspond to fuel and air ratio accordinly. So the car jumps even with lthe release of brake in a undue fashion and hit the car in front.

Recall done. But Volvo says throttle body is bad, should throttle body be cover? if program is extending sweeps internally of potentiometers. Would that wear pattern from previous program wear out potentiometers, creating more problem with throttle body. Volvo should replace throttle body. As a safty assurance.

Despite several service bulletins and recall, the Volvo dealership refused to honor the recall #155 campaign charging me $1,120. 92 for a new electronic throttle. We would like to know where we can send this invoice for reimbursement. We also would like the administration to triple fine Volvo cars for its blatant disregard of the laws governing recalls.
While driving 70 mph, car lost acceleration and stalled without warning. If I would have been rear ended going at this speed I could have lost my life. Check engine light came on and all codes are associated with the 181 recall. Called Volvo and Volvo stated that this VIN number was not part of the recall yet I am experiencing the same exact problem and have the same exact engine codes when running a diagnostics test associated with this recall.
When pressing the accelerator to enter traffic there was a very significant hesitation followed by a sudden lurch which almost lead to a t-bone accident. This was the third time this has happened in the last two weeks. Volvo found a service bulletin for 6 cylinder engine and installed the software upgrade. It is too early to tell if it worked.
While driven from work. My car suddenly slow down and show a message. Reduced engine power. Then car stopped by it self. Restart the car and engine start jumping. Need advise.
On the above date I started my vehicle and put the vehicle in reverse to pull out of parking space. Immediately after releasing my foot from the brake and before touching the gas pedal, the car accelerated in reverse so fast that I bounced off a cement pole in the middle of the parking lot. The force was so great that the vehicle bounced three times before I was able to stop it which I did by applying the brake and being blocked by the pole. After I came to a stop I realized that it was in fact the pole that had stopped my car. I was also blocking the parking lot so I put my foot back on brake and put the car in drive to get out of way of other motorists and to assess damage to the rear of my vehicle. At this point, to my surprise, as I took my foot off the brake and before I could touch the accelerator, the vehicle did the same thing in drive as it had done in reverse and I went hurling toward a very busy four lane street. I applied foot brake and pulled emergency brake and was still not able to stop due to the force of acceleration. Thankfully I hit the cement parking marker and a divider which raised my car off ground so that the front wheels we in the air. Never once did my foot touch the accelerator of the vehicle nor was their anything else touching the accelerator.
The contact owns a 2002 Volvo S60. The contact stated that while driving 15 mph, the throttle failed. The contact stated that she tried to engage the accelerator pedal but the vehicle would not move. The vehicle was towed to the dealer who diagnose that the electronic throttle module needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure who stated that although the vehicle was included in recall NHTSA campaign id number: 06v441000 (vehicle speed control) it was no longer eligible since the vehicle had surpassed the statue of limitation. The failure mileage was 140,000.
The dash information system will randomly go blank and display srs failure. Along with all information lights start blinking on and off. The analog gauge like the speedometer and fuel gauge will go to "0" or just move eratically to any number or position while driving. At night the entire information center go blank the clock and the mileage(no lights at all).
Purchased used S60 in November 2011 with 137,000 miles. A few weeks later various problems manifested: scrambled letters in dashboard message, driver door locks intermittently worked, radio self tuned to different station, speedometer giving false readings or stuck at current speed or reading zero, fuel gauge malfunction, all instruments on panel flickered, all instruments went "dark" while driving. At first restarting car would clear problem. Then frequency between failures increased. Just before complete failure - car needed to be "cold" for instruments to work - with instruments failing once engine warmed. Finally in February 2012 at about 147,021 miles the panel completely failed while driving - giving driver no readings (speed, fuel, temp, mileage, or warning indicators) and would not reset. Internet forums of Volvo owners suggested it was a driver information module failure. Owners forums pinpointed 3 probable causes of a dim failure - 1. Loose connection of the motorola microchip, 2. Loose capacitor/resistor 3. Lack of protection from heat/heat transfer to individual prongs in microchip or between capacitor/resistor and the circuit board. Some electrically savvy owners fixed by reflowing/resoldering/heat protecting said components. Our local Volvo dealer confirmed dim failure and quoted aprox. $1500 for a new instrument cluster and 3 hrs. Labor. We chose to send dim/instrument cluster out for a refurbishment to baa remanufacturing inc. On reinstallation warning message read "sra/airbag-service urgent". Asked dealer to clear dim code first, then from srs module per baa-reman instructions. Dealer job description/receipt stated they cleared codes dim 0001, 0003, 0005, 0006, e003, srs 00d4, e003. No problems with locks/radio/instrument cluster since remanufacture in the last 10,000 miles/5 months. Volvo's original dim circuit board poorly designed/assembled.
I own a 2005 Volvo S60. When driving today to work, with no warning, the vehicle stalled. I was unable to control the gas and the steering became rough. Hitting the accelartor did nothing. I was able to slow the vehicle to the side of the road. Once I turned it off and back on it restarted. If this had happened on a highway, it could have resulted in a major accident. Research shows that this is a common problem with Volvo. There was a recall for these incidents for under years 2003 -and 2004- 07v226000 . The recall for the s40 covered through 2006 - 08v033000. A search of the internet forum shows that this is happening for a lot of the 2005 models as well. Please consider including these model years as this is a danger.

The contact owns a 2003 Volvo S60. The contact stated with his foot on the brake pedal, the vehicle would intermittently surge forward. The contact also stated that the vehicle would intermittently hesitate to accelerate from a stopped position. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer to have the failure diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, but offered no assistance. The failure mileage was 20,000. Updated 01/04/12 updated 01/09/12.
The electronic throttle module had to be replaced in my 2006 Volvo S60. The car only has 72,702 miles! this is after having paid several hundred dollars to have the etm cleaned several months ago. The cost to replace the etm was over $800. As I search the internet, these cars seem to have problems with this particular part. It's ridiculous to think that I'm going to have to keep paying for this part, especially when the car is only 5 years old and has far less than 100,000 miles!!! I demand a recall and warranty replacement! the service manager at my local Volvo dealership tells me these units need to be cleaned or serviced about every 30k miles. I have a copy of my receipt from this weeks service. This part should be covered under a warranty by the manufacturer! believe me, I'm active on the web and I'm going to tell everyone I know to stay away from Volvos.

2001 Volvo S60. Attorney writes on behalf of consumer in regards to problems with vehicle as described in NHTSA action number pe05-041 the vehicle was taken to the dealer regarding the recall. However, the vehicle was not exhibiting the characteristics at the time. The dealer claimed their diagnostic test did not indicate anything wrong with the etm, but there could have been something wrong with an outside temperature sensor, which they suggested might be a part of the problem. The consumer was charged $103 for the diagnostic test, and they indicated it would cost $270 to replace the sensor. The consumer declined the repairs. The consumer took the vehicle to a repair facility and they replaced both temperature sensors. Following the replacement of the sensors, the technician reported the vehicle exhibited symptoms of surging, idle fluctuating and loss of power. Clearly, the sensors were not the problem. The consumer is seeking reimbursement for the diagnostic test.
