Tire Sidewall Problems of Volvo S80

While driving on an interstate at approximately 70mph a very slight road vibration was felt approximately 1 minute before the rear driver side tire completely failed. There was a loud audible thump as the vehicle unintentionally jerked to the left. I was able to maintain control of the vehicle and stop safely. Upon inspection, both sidewalls of the tire had separated from top tread section and the tire was in three complete pieces. The wheel incurred minor damage. The vehicle was not overloaded. The tire was believed to be at the correct pressure and showed no signs of puncture or obvious cause of failure. The tire was purchased and mounted professionally 43 days before the failure.

225/50r-17 94v proxes tpt all season blackwall had a sidewall failure while traveling straight on a highway at 70 mph, outside temp was 84 degrees f. Tire core remained intact leaving 1 or 2 inches of each sidewall glued to rim. Tire had 22k miles on it. Air pressure should have been okay since it was checked a few weeks earlier. Opposing tire was at 33 when checked cold the next day. Door panel indicates 29-39 is okay.

We want to file a complaint to a tire manufacturer, michelin. We have bought 4 piece of michelin tires on 11/24/2006 from its a tire dealer, costco wholesale club tier center, located at 50 overlook blvd, nanuet, NY 10954, tel. (845) 425-0316 and the 4 piece tiers were installed there. The tire model is michelin pilot sport a/s 225/50r17 ultra high performance price at $207. 99 per tier (current price) after 4 months, on 3/28/07, we accidentally found one tire located at front passenger side had blister (a bubble) in the sidewall, when we checked the tire air pressure. See the picture as follows: we are glad to find this defective tier prior to getting a car accident. Because we realized that the defective condition might result in a rapid loss air pressure, which could lead to a loss control and a vehicle crash. We could like to have either an inspector of the highway traffic safety administration office or a third party inspector to inspect this defective tier to get some information to protect people from potential car crash and lost lives. The michelin tire (p336/50r17) experienced a blowout, the consumer observed a 3" cut in the sidewall after avoiding a pot hole, three days later while driving a loaner with michelin tires, another blowout occurred when the consumer avoided hittin a ball that rolled into the street.
