general problems of the 1999 Volvo V70 - part 2

69 problems related to vehicle speed control have been reported for the 1999 Volvo V70. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

36 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 08/17/2005

Electronic throttle module failed and replaced 3 times; 11/03, 12/04, 8/05 on a 1999 Volvo V70xc.

37 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 08/14/2005

While driving at highway speed 65-70 mph car suddenly jumped forward then slowed and stalled while driving on hwy. Luckily I was able to pull to the side of the road without a problem. After a few minutes the car restarted and would drive but was surging just like before it stalled. I quickly drove the car home and parked. The problem has not yet been corrected but was quoted $1000 to replace the electronic throttle module by dealer (wilde Volvo in brookfield, WI). The same dealer also told me that they replace an average of three of the electronic throttle modules every week. That seems like a defective part if they change 3 a week at 1,000 each and the stalling could cause a serious accident.

38 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 08/03/2005

"check engine" light came on 8/3/05. Took car to dealership for diagnosis. Said it was malfunction of throttle that regulates air going into engine. No consequences as of yet.

39 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 07/26/2005

1) 1999 Volvo V70. Ets light appeared on dashboard. 2) throttle body assembly defective 3) parts replaced with new.

40 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 07/19/2005

1999 Volvo V70 xc developed problems with the electronic throttle system. Recall campaign#10131400. While in motion the vehicle experienced a sudden loss of engine power. The consumer noticed that the ets light had illuminated.

41 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 07/18/2005

My 1999 Volvo V70 stalled in traffic causing me to lose power steering. Luckily traffic was moving slowly because of an accident and I was able to pull the car over and restart it after several tries. I took it in for service and they cleaned fuel deposits off the throttle, but informed me this was a common problem with this model and if the problem persists, I would have to take it to a dealer for a $1,600 dollar repair of throttle control.

42 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 07/15/2005

My car started riding rough in about 2003. Rpm's jump, car thrusts like a gas surge. This can occur while on highway speed or while idling at a stop light. The car was serviced and repaired, but then the problem came back (after the service was no longer under warranty). Volvo has not been able to solve the problem sufficiently, but I have been told they are related to mass air control, throttle control, and oxygen sensor. My car is currently at Volvoville again for service of this problem.

43 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 07/08/2005

Consumer owns a 1999 Volvo V70. Vehicle stalled/ died and lost power due to throttle valve failure.

44 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 07/03/2005

1999 Volvo V70. Intermittent stalling and loss of power.

45 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 06/06/2005

I am writing after seeing a news article on complaints against Volvo. I owned a 1999 xc V70 (which I just traded) yv1lz56dxx2559218 twice simply lost power while driving, and would not allow me to get the car to go faster than 10 miles per hour. The first failure occurred sometime in 2003, was repaired, and then failed again in June of 2005. After spending around $1,000 to fix the problem I traded the car in. I complained to Volvo several times but they were unresponsive.

46 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 05/20/2005

Mileage approx 115,000 when purchased now 120,000 within 8 months. Hardly hard use. Failure of ecm and O2 sensors, on two occasions the second within 1000 miles and 1 month of first repair. Caused the car to surge, if restarted might stall and generally become dangerous to drive. No warning of failure. Volvo dealerships well aware of problem and offered immediate and correct diagnosis prior to checking the computer codes, without needing much investigation. 2 dealers worked on the car one don bayer in washington and independence Volvo in charlotte. Instructed independence Volvo dealer to make car safe and roadworthy. Uploaded faults and downloaded onto vehicle, new software. Within 1 month new symptoms appear. At various times these lights show and reset abs warning, engine warning, traction control warning, speedo failure, check engine, service warning (even though service is just carried out). Symptoms include lack of throttle response when pulling away, when speedo fails. No warning of change in status means this happens during turning maneuvers with potentially dangerous or lethal consequences. Checking various sources note that abs module failure is common making the car potentially unsafe in emergency, not only for braking but during acceleration as the cars ability to pull at its normal rate is vastly reduced, adding throttle does nothing, but if the system turns back on again no warning, the speedometer just comes back to life ) this can cause unneeded fierce acceleration. I noted one death on the highway of a young woman who appeared to accelerate off the road during a benign maneuver and am concerned that this on/off speedometer/abs transmission problem might have been the cause rather than the ecm currently the focus of the investigation.

47 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2005

The contact owned a 1999 Volvo V70 xc. She experienced three month of impeded performance. The problem with the vehicle was prudentially hazardous. Manufacturer should do a recall and pay the associated expenses. The vehicle stalled/died/ lost power due to throttle body malfunctioning.

48 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 03/29/2005

During the month of March, 2005, I was driving my 1999 Volvo V70 on the interstate at 65 miles per hour when the car jerked several times and slowed to 10 miles per hour; not accelerating pass that speed. I exited the interstate and drove home at the speed of 10 miles per hour or less. To prevent the car from stopping at red lights, I placed the car in park and pressed the accelerator to keep the car from stopping. I had the car towed to Volvo south atlanta and it was determined that the throttle body had to be replaced at a cost of $905. 44. The parts were disposed of but I have a receipt for the throttle body, gasket and etm reload.

49 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 03/28/2005

Vehicle intermittently stalledand lost power.

50 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 03/17/2005

11/12/04 mass air flow sensor replaced 12/16/04 map sensor & shut off valve replaced 3/15/05 shut off valve replaced again! 1/18 05 master window switch pack replaced - 5/31/05 master window switch pack replaced again!! 3/17/05 electronic throttle control module replaced!!! 5/9/05 oxygen sensor and abs control unit replaced. When the throttle control module failed in March 2005, my 1999 Volvo V70 had only 55,000 miles on it! I was on the expressway when my car lost power and had no way to get back onto the road safely. . . . . I have spent over $4000 in the past year replacing electrical control units in order to make this car safe. The check engine light came multiple times over the past year. I am afraid to drive this car for fear of something else going wrong with the electrical system. I have four small grandchildren who are with me at least three days a week.

51 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 03/07/2005

Vehicle speed control. 1st failure occurred when I was driving my 9 year old daughter and 6 year old neighbor. Traffic was heavy and the surge almost caused me to rear end the car in front of me. Lack of power with normal acceleration which leads to more pressure to the accelerator leading to an eventual dangerous surge. Very noticeable at a dead start, but does occur at different speeds. Explained by dealership that etm needs replacing. Replacement cost will be $800-$1200.

52 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 12/05/2004

The consumer owns two Volvos, a 1999 cross-country and a 1998 cross-country. Vehicle stalled and lost power due to the failure of electronic throttle system (ets).

53 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2004

Ets and check engine light appeared and car refuses to accelerate and idles rough. This can occur at start up and then while driving the car. It was diagnosed as a bad throttle body and/or electronic control module. This is a common occurrence in this generation of Volvo.

54 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 11/30/2004

Vehicle stalled/died, and lost power due to throttle body failure.

55 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 10/20/2004

I've had numerous electronic problems with my Volvo V70 since I bought it in 1998. The vehicle has been brought back to the Volvo repair dealer for many repairs (I have organized documents of all the repair orders) clearly identified as "lost of power" while driving. Mostly on small roads and only once on an interstate. Originally started under warranty, I was told that the same problem was not covered outside of warranty when I spoke with the president of Volvo north America's secretary. I have had many parts replaced trying to correct the situation including two electronic throttle control units (totaling three if you include the one that came with the car). "loss of power", "stalling at traffic lights", "hesitation when pressing on accelerator", an other comments are all documented in the Volvo repair shop repair orders. The problems continued until throughout my ownership of the car. I finally gave up and sold it June 05. The repairs that Volvo did to my V70 would work for a while and then the lights would soon come back on. I'd put up with it for a while until the car started to become to dangerous to drive (hesitation) and then I'd bring it in for repair. Volvo tried different solutions and told me that the computer codes indicated different repairs, but to me it was always the same symptoms. I would be glad to share the entire book of repair orders over the 7 years (and 167,000 miles) that I owned the car. Again they were always done at a certified Volvo dealership.

56 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 10/20/2004

I have had two 1999 Volvo 70-series. One a V70 wagon, and the other a s70 sedan. Both had a failure of the electronic throttle module (etm). The etm on the V70 failed at 61,091 miles. The s70 failed at 101,312 miles for me, but since we bought the car used at about 98,000 miles, I do not know if it failed before. The V70 was exhibiting symtoms and was replaced under warranty when I brought it in for service. The s70 however failed on the road in traffic with my daughter driving, while I was also in the car. It was replaced by Volvo, but cost me as there was no warranty.

57 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 09/12/2004

"service engine soon" (ses) light came on recently purchased this car with 55000 miles on odometer. Call to Volvo indicated that this usually meant that the etm (electronic throttle module) needs cleaning. Call local independant Volvo mechanic. He had me check the color of the label on etm. Said that I had the original etm and that claing does no good, etm needs replaced as he has seen this issue many times. Had independent mechanic replace etm at a cost of ~$800. Further investigation on internet found that this is a very common occurance. Also noted that I had purchased an extended warranty with car and that the warranty explicitly exluded etm. . . . Coincidence? I think not. . . . . The etm failure is not only a safetly hazzard (car can not go > 20mph when ses comes on. . ) but for a car of the alledged quality of a Volvo to have a prt such as a throttle module go bad at 55000 miles is crazy. In addition it appears that the replacement etm will be subject to the same problem in the future. . . Note that the VIN of this vehicle is yv1lz56d2x2625163, 1999 Volvo V70-xc.

58 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 07/22/2004

This complaint is regarding 2 faulty throttle modules (etm) that have been replaced by Volvo dealerships for my 1999 Volvo V70 xc. The first/original etm was replaced under warranty with 58,635 miles on 22 may 03. 14 months and 12,474 miles later, that etm failed and I had to replace it at my cost. Symptoms included irregular and erratic acceleration and deceleration of the car at highway speeds with the acceleration pedal pressed, but steady. It should also be noted that the two etm's that were installed were both model# 8644347. This shows evidence that Volvo is only replacing a failed defective etm with a new defective etm. I urge the NHTSA to look into this matter for the safety of Volvo drivers who might get into a future accident due to this defective part. Thank you.

59 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 01/14/2004

I own a 1999 Volvo V70 xc. The car suddenly stopped and stalled. I was able to restart it and drive it. I was told that the electronic throttle control module (etm) has failed and needs replacement. I am told that if I do not replace this part, $1000+ repair, that the car can experience a sudden stall again. Doing some research on the internet and talking to the mechanic it sounds like this is a very common problem with certain Volvo's. It would seem to me that because of the frequency of failure and seriousness of potential safety issues Volvo would have addressed the etm problem a long time ago. Thank you.

60 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 12/24/2003

The contact stated basically the warning light was coming on in the latter part of 2003. It happened several times. He took the vehicle to the dealer, and the dealer told him that he could have it cleaned, but the warning light could still come on. He would eventually have to replaced the electronic throttle module (etm). The contact had it replaced in 2-04, and just found out about the problem with the valves. He called the dealer stating he would like his money back from Volvo. Because the car was not under warranty at the time he had the etm replaced, and because the mileage was 64,495, they could not reimburse him. The caller was not the original owner.

61 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2003

Vehicle intermittentlystalled and lost power.

62 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2003

Electronic throttle module (etm) failed twice at 8/1/03 68,000 miles and on 9/8/05 at 76,000 miles. Volvo dealership in medford, oregon charged over $800 each time to repair the defect.

63 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2003

Last year, I brought my car to the local Volvo dealer (goodwin's in brunswick, me) because the engine was "surging". This means that the engine was revving and slowing independent of the accelerator pedal. They told me that this is a defect in the electronic throttle control, that it was dangerous and needed to be fixed, that lots of Volvo's up to the year 2003 had it, and then Volvo finally managed to engineer a fix. In fact, the service manager said he wouldn't by a Volvo car unless it was 2003 model or newer for this reason. When I asked why it wasn't a recall issue since there are so many problems, they simply replied that it wasn't. I was charged about $1000. 00 to have it replaced.

64 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2003

The contact stated while driving the vehicle stalled intermittently. The vehicle has been to the dealership numerous times to have the electronic throttle module replaced. The contact was afraid to drive the vehicle. The problem recurred after repairs made. The vehicle surges and stutters violently the manufacturer has been contacted. The door latch was broken. A loose ball joint was replaced. The drivers window would not go up. Updated 01/25/06.

65 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 04/02/2003

Ets light on, dealer replaced etm customer pay. Receipts faxed to odi, this voq created from e-mail sent by current owner mr. Scott. The consumer stated the part failed and was replaced before he purchased the vehicle, but he is sure it will have to replaced again.

66 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 03/13/2003

Engine began to run rough followed by loss of acceleration then stalling. Car stalled in traffic causing traffic jam. Subsequently restarted and driven to dealer for repair. Parts replaced were throttle control body, gasket and etm reload at a cost of $942.

67 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 11/29/2002

The vehicle stalled. The dealer replaced throttle body 3 times.

68 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 06/21/2002

The ets (relating to throttle control module) keeps coming on during acceleration followed by very sluggish performance of vehicle. Previous times upon light up, I've taken this to the dealer and both times they state nothing was wrong and reset the system. This should have been replaced during the warranty period. I'm afraid that there could be a major accident soon due to this problem.

69 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 12/23/2001

Abs brake, check engine light, transmission lights all came on. Third time in 11 months. First service was a soft ware patch. Hardware replaced last week and same problem happened again. Manufacturer unwilling to assist with problem. Dt.
