1 Brake Electric Antilock problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2001

I am filing this report because of the concern about a potential safety problem with the brakes. The problem is intermittent, has been taken back to the dealer five times, and cannot be resolved. Intermittently when applying the brakes there is a clicking sound and a strong vibration feeling on the brake pedal when braking. This clicking and vibration continues until the car comes to a full stop. Dealer states that this is the abs and is normal for this car. I don't know if its really the abs, but the problem happens at least 5-10 times per week under normal driving conditions when the abs should not activate. This is unnerving for the driver and makes us feel unsafe. There are other complaints on your website with the same symptons, but where the car stalled or the brake pedal locked up. I'm concerned that my problem with turn into a more serious problem, but the dealer says that nothing is wrong. I've recently found out that the brake systems and abs were redesigned in 2001 and this vibration and clicking problem was resolved in the redesign. Although the dealer now admits there is a problem, they say it cannot be fixed. As a result, I have a major safety concern and don't want to drive this car any longer. It's on lease and Volvo refuses to terminate the lease.

2 Brake Electric Antilock problem

During braking, the abs seems to randomly start functioning on its own, as it would during a panic stop, the brake pedal will pulsein unison with a moderate tapping sound emanating from below the rear seat, the brakes do not pulse physically, only the pedal pulse and the tapping occurs, the dealer was notified of the problem and consumer was informed that it was a normal function of the abs, however the service manager agreed that there was a problem and that Volvo was aware of it in a small number of other vehicles.
