Driving along 495 heading west in fast lane at about 65 mph. Etc light came on. I started moving over to breakdown lane and stoped. Had to put the car in neutral as engine was surging. Shut off engine. Looked up etc in manual which said "shut off engine then restart. After restarting, engine was surging. Tachometer going up and down. Switched off engine. Opened hood to look for loose wire, connector or blown etc fuse. Saw no loose wires or connectors. Identified fuse. Removed fuse, fuse looked fine. Replaced same fuse. Tried engine, problem disapeared!.
While driving my 2000 Volvo V70xc on the highway, the car took itself out of cruise control and began to flucuate +/- 3 mph in speed. The ets light came on too. After pulling off the highway and turning the engine off, I re-started the car and drove home without incident. My local mechanic (hoshi motors of boulder, CO) downloaded the engine codes (904d, 91ac) which he said indicated that the etm needed to be replaced. The etm was replaced on 7/27/05 at a cost of $908. 60. The problem has not occurred again. The etm was returned to me and is available. This complaint is related to NHTSA action number pe05041.
At highway speeds (60 mph), on an uphill grade, the car was attempting to shift between gears. The car lost power and rpm indication began to fluctuate between 1800 and 2300 rpm. The ets light came on and the car continued to intermittently lose power for the remainder of our trip home (roughly 60 miles). The car has 57,000 miles on it and sounds very similar to other complaints I have been reading. Since then, the car repeats these symptoms at any speed in the two trips to 1) local mechanic and 2) dealer vehicle purchased at.
