1 Seats problem of the 2004 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 10/25/2018

I was at our automotive shop and had to give a customer a ride to work. I had the seat warmers on because it was cold outside. About a minute into the drive, I feel a burning sensation on my left outer thigh. I thought nothing of it. The burning sensation got worse, I stated, "something's burning me!" the customer states she smells something burning, like wires. I pull over, hop out of the car to notice a burn hole in my seat. Luckily, I did not get severely burnt, however, my thigh was sore for about 4 hours. After this happened, I went online to see if there was a recall on the seat. There was not. After googling this situation, I found that my 04 Volvo V70 wasn't the only vehicle that has had this issue. Many, many people with the same year, make, and model have had this same issue.

3 Seats problem of the 1998 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 04/09/2015

Purchased this car this month for my son for him to commute to school. My son told me that the seat moves to different position when the car hit the pot hole. It is very dangerous if the driver has short legs. There is preset position for the seat. No sure what to do with this.

4 Seats problem of the 2004 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 03/14/2015

The driver side seat warmer caught fire. It burned a hole through the side of the seat cover and also caused a mild burn to my leg. I stopped the car, shut of the seat warmer, and was able to extinguish the fire while it was still small. A search on the internet revealed that other owners have experienced this problem.

5 Seats problem of the 2009 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 11/29/2013

Srs warning light illuminated at approximately 70,000 miles, 4. 5 years after purchasing Volvo directly from the factory in sweden. The light remained on for a few days, then turned off. This occurred regularly for 4 months until the light remained on indefinitely. When I finally took the vehicle in for servicing, the error code indicated a faulty occupant weight sensor (ows) embedded in the passenger seat. The passenger air bag will no longer deploy in the event of an accident because the sensor will no longer identify a passenger in the car. It is unclear whether this also disables the driver (primary) air bag, as well as the side air bags. I contacted Volvo USA shortly after the 5 year manufacturer warranty expired and they emphatically claimed that this egregious safety issue was no longer their concern. Respectfully, please note that due to this faulty ows the car is extremely dangerous to operate and that Volvo should be responsible for fixing this error.

11 Seats problem of the 2004 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 01/24/2010

On Sunday, 24 January 2009, the heating element in the driver's seat in our 2004 Volvo V70 somehow shorted and/or otherwise overheated, causing the seat to begin to smolder and smoke and burned small holes in the side of the leather seat cover. After the heating element was turned off, the materials in the seat appear to have been sufficiently fire retardant to keep the seat from a full-scale conflagration. We had been smelling an unexplained odor for a couple of days prior, which we now believe to have been when the overheating started. To the best of my knowledge there has never been anything done to the seat, and it is essentially if not precisely in the same state as it came from the factory in 2004. The local Volvo dealer (don beyer Volvo, falls church, va) on Monday, 25 January 2009, found that the heating element was the problem, they disconnected the heating element to preclude a fire, said that this was the first they had heard of a problem of this type, and said that the repair (parts and labor) would be covered under our warranty (less deductible). We later on 25 January were told that the repair parts are on back-order and are expected within 7-10 days.

12 Seats problem of the 1999 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 04/06/2003

To whom it may concern: we bought our new Volvo V70 glt wagon in 1999 from kramer motor, santa monica, California. Just recently the airbag safety light (srs) went off and I was told by the authorized Volvo service dealer (rusnak, pasadena) that it meant something was wrong in the airbag system and Volvo would replace the airbag. On the day of the repair the dealer called and told me there was something wrong with my seat covers - the covers were not authorized Volvo seat covers (driver and passenger) and therefore the Volvo airbag feature might not work. Since we bought this car new from a Volvo dealer, we did not understand how this situation could happen. Volvo informed us that dealers will sometimes change factory parts, if they want to, and that Volvo can not do anything about it and does not accept any responsibility for what their dealers do. Since this dealer changed a feature that has serious safety issues, again we could not believe this situation is correct. How is a consumer protected in such a matter? we bought from an authorized dealer and how are were we supposed to know or even suspect that critical safety elements might not be functioning? Volvo America and their local representative, michael lafata, seem to feel that it is just a case of let the buyer beware. The Volvo America customer service supervisor, kathleen natale, was more understanding and tried to help but she had to defer to mr. Lafata's decision that Volvo would not replace these seat covers to return the airbag safety feature to an operating condition. Rather, rusnak Volvo put my car back together with the non-Volvo seat covers and sent me on my way with a stack of paperwork that clearly says that my car may not be safe because the airbag feature may not work with the current seat covers. As you can see below, no one has been injured or died yet, but clearly this is a safety problem that we believe Volvo America should quickly address.
