Automatic Emergency Braking Problems of Volvo XC60

The vehicle came to a stop in two different occasions (6 months apart) without a reason. The first occasion was while exiting the freeway, there was no car or object in front of me. The second time I had gone over a manhole and the car screeched to a halt on a city street. I was very fortunate that in both occasions I did not have a car behind me or this malfunction would have caused a collision. After the car stopped I was able to continue driving. After the car stopped the message "auto braking by city safety" appeared on the dashboard.

The parking collision sensors occasionally stop working during the parking process going from active to fully inactive at the same time. While driving through the city the coward collision has ghost activations where the car believes an object is right in front when there is nothing there. The emergency braking activated once with nothing in front on the highway at speeds over 55 mph and applied full breaking force. Since then the sensors have been turned off.

The automatic breaking system was deployed while backing up in a parking lot. There were no obstacles, either stationary or moving, that should have triggered the braking. We have had several other times when the brake "felt odd" during reverse. It becomes very stiff and hard to depress but still works.

Airbag fault lamp illuminated. Trouble code u0433 stored in body module (cem). The problem described is with the closing velocity module, a component of the collision mitigation system. There is a TSB available from Volvo for this code, reference number us25146. 1. 1. It states a software update must be performed to resolve the error. My complaint is that the airbag system is affected and shows an airbag fault lamp, which prevents passing vehicle inspection in my state. The collision avoidance system can be turned off by the driver. As such, there is no cause for disabling or otherwise negatively affecting the airbag system in the event of a fault. A remedy is not provided free of charge from Volvo, and it should be so as this issue prevents legal operation of the car despite the affected system (collision mitigation) being designed to be turned off by the user.

I have had 5 visits with problems with engine , braking sensors, and automatic braking incidents when no obstruction is noted. Propulsion system failure has occurred 3+ times and turtle mode has come on and limited my speed to 30 mpg. It has also started bouncing and shaking while in reverse. I am extremely concerned about the safety threats and lack of consistency when taking it to be repaired.

Since owning my Volvo Xc60 I have had to change my brakes and rotors 3 times. I first purchased my car in January 2020 and the model is a 2019. The brake issues that have occurred have been the brake pedal shaking excessively as well as concern that the car would not brake due to the brakes wearing down very quickly. This has also affected the brake safety that Volvo pride themselves on. Additionally I was asked to pay $600 for a recall that the dealership told me needed to be done for my safety and admitted that Volvo should be picking up the tab for this.

The parking sensors and auto brake malfunctioned while I was parking. Nothing was in the car's vicinity, but the car sensors started to beep intensely and the car automatically broke abruptly.

I pulled my car out of the garage, I saw I had not taken the trash out and had my foot on brake. The car has an automatic shut off at stops to save gas. It shut off, I jumped out thinking it was "off" as there was no engine sound. The car started back up and started going forward. I attempted to jump in to hit the brakes . . . It kept going and hit side mirror, door, me and then kept going! it never stopped! crushed me half in half out of door. My friend jumped in stopped it from passenger side and then started it up to back it up and remove me. I was taken to trauma with fractured pelvis, broken lumbar, cracked ribs and a concussion and stitches! this is supposed to be one of thee safest cars. My family owns 3! the sensors did not stop the car! period! called Volvo and they blew me off after several drawn out forms. Said the car will not stop in reverse. I was going forward! I paid for the black box to be downloaded and it shows no collision recorded but I need two new doors its so bad! it has been since first week of Feb that I have been rehabilitating and several of my doctors have asked why this was not a case with a lawyer? so far most do not want to fight Volvo I guess. I need help with this. I have proof it did not stop or even show collision from sensors. Thank you kimberly bradshaw.

While backing out of garage, the car abruptly and violently braked. The driver was tossed forward. The rear camera showed nothing in the car's path and no alarms had been set off. Visual review confirmed the absence of anything in the path of the automobile. The automobile was purchased new about 7-10 days before this occurrence. The driver has experienced shoulder, neck, and upper body pains somewhat responsive to acetaminophen tablets. The driver was instructed to turn off the automatic rear brake each time backing up but has not been offered a permanent fix. I do not know if Volvo has been informed or if the dealership has inspected the car.

The google/android (ihu) electrical system controls the entire car: brakes, engine, safety features, ac/heat, etc. It is unreliable after 4 repair attempts. Problems started date of delivery (9/6/22) & have been ongoing. The ones that directly affect safety are the auto braking activating without cause, blind spot warning missing motorcycles, lane keeping will pull car towards a hazard in middle of road when you swerve to avoid it and the google/android system in general malfunctioning. I live in south florida and I can assure you that air conditioning is a safety concern, especially in people like me who have medical conditions in which excessive heat exposure can result in an er visit. My ac has failed upon starting the car as well as following the rebooting of the google/android system. The rebooting of the system must be done whenever the system malfunctions & it is wise to pull off the road to do it because everything but engine shuts down during the procedure. I have had to do this several times sitting off the side of the road & the system still wasn't working. It is not safe to have to pull off road so frequently. The automatic braking was particularly frightening, as both I and the car in front of me were both slowing for a stoplight, there was at least 5 car lengths between us & the distance between us was not narrowing. My car suddenly braked. Had someone been close behind me they would likely have rear-ended my car. They might have also assumed I brake-checked them & reacted with anger. Requested Volvo corporate involvement for 4th repair attempt & ihu was replaced. System began malfunctioning again, but blind spot worked. The google system is apparently unstable, as the 2nd loaner car's backup camera & cross traffic warning froze & failed to alert. Dates: 9-6-22 to 1-25-23 (date they took car for repair try #5). About 4000 miles on it. Volvo says they can't replicate concerns. I have video of some malfunctions & sent to dealer.

Driving on rte 211 in oak island, nc, slowing to turn with no one in front or behind me, emergency breaking engaged, bring the car to a full stop.

Picked the vehicle up from dealership, rapidly received errors in may 2022. Errors as follows; blind spot sensor service required, rear auto brake reduced functionality, park assist system reduced functionality, vehicle had less that 15 miles. A different incident in may, the ac wouldn’t work and had to shut down and reset screen. July 2022, car would not start with either key, confirmed both keys working. Would not recognize key or respond to app, eventually radio would come on but car wouldn’t crank. Dealership updated software. August 2022, gps kept dropping and continued issues with electrical, tcam module replaced.

Ready to drive feature in traffic can cause a crash, when ur stock in traffic and be in the first row at red light, if the front car that pass the red light move, the vehicule advise you to move foward with visual and audio signal if you dont look up the light is green, you can accelerate and run out with red light and crash.

2 incidents occurred during the week of christmas (1 before and 1 after) in which the rear auto brake engaged without warning or provocation. There were 0 obstacles, vehicles, or persons in the vicinity which would have required an alert or braking. The 1st occurred in a parking lot and the 2nd occurred when backing out of a private garage. In each instance, another adult aside from the driver witnessed the malfunction. 1 incident occurred in January in which the rear auto brake engaged without warning and without presence of obstacles, vehicles, or persons in the vicinity which would have warranted an alert or braking. At each incident, the words rear auto brake intervention or something similar appeared on the dashboard. The braking and screen message occurred with warning or any cause for the sudden and forceful automatic braking. After the 3rd incident, the owner found the option to disable the rear auto brake intervention feature but this needs to be done at each new drive. No accidents occurred. The owner took the car to the dealer's service department. The service department was unable to duplicate the issue nor were they able to find any record of the error in the vehicle's "black box. " the car remains with the service department due to subsequent issues experienced and reported on this site by the owner.

On two occasions the automatic breaking/city safety engaged on my Volvo Xc60 2021 vehicle. In both incidences there was no need for this to happen. First incident (o/a June 25, 2021) occurred while changing lanes. There was traffic but said traffic was a safe distance in front of me. I was startled by the immediate hard stop breaking and safety belts tightening around me. No accident occurred. Only traffic behind me needing to break to avoid rear ending me. Even though shaken I continued on my way and put it behind me. Second incident (Jul 7,2021) occurred in the i95 tunnel heading to baltimore. There was no vehicle directly in front of me. Only a vehicle vehicle at least 6 car lengths or more ahead. There was a tractor trailer beside me and vehicles behind me. Again the automatic breaking/city safety engaged. The vehicle came to a hard stop. I was shaken and even more frightened by what happened. No accident occurred. However, the vehicles behind me had to immediately break. I can’t express enough how horrifying these incidents were, especially in the i95 tunnel. I called the Volvo dealership where I bought the vehicle and took it in for service the next day. They ran diagnostics on the vehicle. No codes were shown during testing. I am afraid to drive this vehicle. I was told the automatic breaking/city safety cannot be turned off. I don’t want to sound over dramatic but I fear for my life, my family and others. I don’t want this vehicle. I want a vehicle that I have control over. This safety system has failed!! this system puts my life and others in danger!! the only explanation I received from dealer was that this system works on a camera and radar. I was nonchalantly told a glare from a vehicle or road sign could cause this. This all is alarming to me. What is my recourse?!?! I am aware there were problems with the automatic breaking in Volvos in 2019 & 2020. This was said to have been resolved through recalls. Im worried and afraid of Volvo Xc60 2021!.

The contact owns a 2018 Volvo Xc60. The contact stated while driving 75 mph, the forward collision avoidance feature inadvertently activated, and the vehicle stopped abruptly without warning. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and a software update was performed; however, the failure reoccurred. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer however, the mechanic found no cause for the failure. The contact was informed that the vehicle performed as designed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was 13,000.
