The mechanic linked the failure to NHTSA campaign number: 09v483000 (fuel system, gasoline). The contact then took the vehicle to jim fisher Volvo (2108 w burnside st, portland, or 97210) where he was informed that the vehicle was not under recall. The contact was informed that he had to pay out of pocket for the repairs. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and offered a discount towards the repairs. The vehicle was repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 200,000.

I purchased this 2003 Volvo Xc70 recently and a few weeks after driving it I noticed a bad smell of gas. I looked around and did not see anything leaking. I kept driving daily and smelled gas every single time the car was on. I became very concerned because I drive with my 6 year old daughter in the car. After some time I noticed that there was a gas leak coming from the passenger side rear and this became a very scary and dangerous situation. I automatically drove to the nearest mechanic shop and got the car looked at. The mechanic told me this is very dangerous and can not be driven because the car can catch fire or even explode. After some research and after hearing back from the mechanic I learned that there is a recall on the fuel pump on this model car and this is exactly the problem. I reached out to Volvo and they tell me that my vehicle does not have a recall and that they will only pay for the part. I have plenty of pictures showing the defect in the fuel pump. I find this ridiculous since they know that this is an issue with these cars. My family and I could have died from being in this car god forbid and now I am stuck with this bill from the mechanic due to Volvo's failure/defect. Volvo is known for having the safest cars in the world which is why I decided to purchase this car for my family, and now I am stuck with a bill for there defect and can not find help or answers.

The contact owns a 2004 Volvo Xc70. While parked, the contact noticed a fuel odor coming from the vehicle. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostics. The contact referenced NHTSA campaign id number: 09v483000 (fuel system, gasoline:delivery:fuel pump) but as advised by the manufacturer that the VIN was not included in the recall. The vehicle was included in an extended warranty but the vehicle had already exceeded the mileage requirements. The failure mileage was 151,000. Fuel gauge erratically moves downward inappropriately. Seems to reset when car restarted, but totally undependable in terms of accuracy. Auto is 3. 5 years old but out of warranty at 60k mi. Dealer recommends new fuel tank (which includes sending unit) and fuel pump. Recommended against used part as "old part has been superceded" it sounds like this is a defect which has not resulted in a recall/campaign. Note: repair with parts and labor is $2100. 00.

The contact owns a 2004 Volvo Xc70. The contact received a recall notice associated with NHTSA campaign id number 09v483000 (fuel system, gasoline: delivery: fuel pump). The contact scheduled an appointment for the vehicle to be repaired under the recall. The contact traveled 55 miles each way and upon arrival at the dealer, she was advised that the part was unavailable and the vehicle was not repaired. The contact experienced the identical problem on a separate occasion with the same dealer. The third attempt for the recall repair; the contact had taken the vehicle to a different dealer where the recall remedy was performed; however, after the repair fuel was leaking from the vehicle onto the ground. The manufacturer was notified and they informed that the dealer would correct the recall remedy repair. The vehicle had not been repaired at the time of the complaint. The failure mileage was 70,000. The VIN was unavailable.
The contact owns a 2001 Volvo Xc70. While attempting to refuel the vehicle with gasoline, the contact stated gasoline continued to spew out from the filler nose and the emissions warning light was illuminated. The dealer advised there was a spider web in the vent well of the fuel tank and triggering the emissions warning light. The dealer made unknown repairs to the vehicle. On a later date, while driving at unknown highway speeds, there was smoke coming from the hood and the vehicle began to lose power. The contact moved the vehicle from the roadway just as the vehicle erupted in flames. The fire department was able to extinguish the fire and the vehicle was towed to a local garage. The contact stated there was a recall for her year, make and model however, the recall did not apply to vehicles located within her state (NHTSA campaign id number: 09v483000: fuel system, gasoline: delivery: fuel pump). The contact believed the recall should apply for her particular state as well. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure and current mileages were 79,000.

Overwhelming smell of gasoline, poor starting, brought automobile to Volvo mechanic (since 1976) determined factory Volvo fuel pump was leaking through the housing, gasoline all over back seats, top of gas tank, engine. . Same occurred July, 2009 on a 2002 Xc70, belonging to my mother, mine is a 2003. Mechanic and self contacted Volvo for defect warranty or recalls as so dangerous. No cooperation from Volvo. I kept the defective part after replacing.
2008 Volvo Xc70 on road trip to college on I-75, started sputtering and "check engine " light went on. I exited at nearest exit lake city, FL and parked and called for road side assistance. My car was flat-bedded and taken to ocala Volvo. Fuel sensor, fuel tank , fuel pump etc replaced. I had to use a loaner for the road trip after already losing one day of travel.
My Volvo's engine started to sputter then died and lost all power. This occurred in seconds and left my two young children and I in a very dangerous, potentially deadly traffic situation. My gas gauge read 150 miles worth of gas left in gas tank. The Volvo was towed to the dealership where it was found to have a faulty fuel pump and control module. Both were replaced.

She made several attempts before the engine started and then heard a loud noise followed by excessive vibration. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing and they stated that the fuel pump failed. The vehicle has not been repaired. The failure and current mileages were 95,000. Updated 2/20/09 the mechanic stated the main fuel pump had a crack at the housing. Updated 02/23/09.
Multiple check engine lights but no clear issue discovered. Now the car vibrates when I start driving it and at times I can floor the gas pedal and not go over 20 mph. I am told it is the fuel pump that needs replacing though it did not show up as an issue from the check engine light diagnosis. Also, spark plugs were changed in sept 0'7 yet were changed again at the 60k check up two weeks ago.
The contact complained about intermittent power failure while accelerating. He was able to restart the vehicle in the past, however, after the third occurrence , the vehicle had to be towed to the dealer. The dealer determined the in tank the fuel pump part # 30741993 needed to be replaced. The contact felt this part was faulty by design.
