My 2004 Volvo Xc70 died twice night and once during the day while driving at high speed on two crowded highways around new york city. The engine totally shut off, the lights went out and luckily I was going fast enough to roll over to the shoulder. This is a car I keep regularly maintained at a Volvo dealer service center as well. Someone made me aware of a Volvo customer blog where several other people had the same problem.

Rapid loss of power in fast lane on busy highway. Two incidents. First time, gauge said 90 miles to empty. Second time, 125 miles to empty. No indication of questionable low fuel. Check engine light came on. Luckily both times was able to get past semi's, as vehicle lost power totally in less than 30 seconds. From 65 to 0. Occurred in January 2009 and March 2009. January 2009 reported to state police. March 2009 reported to dealership for service.

Traveling on a busy expway during rush hour in left lane when car started bucking. I was able to switch 2 lanes and almost made it to the shoulder when the car stopped and wouldn't start again. Car information system reported that the battery power was critically low. I put my hazard lights on and called the police. I could not get out of my car because the traffic was going by too quickly (I was at the bottom of a exit ramp. ) police called their tow truck to get me off the road quickly. Volvo on line service said it would tale an hour to get a truck to me even though I told them I was in a very hazardous place) car was towed to Volvo dealership where within 5 minutes the person who went out to look at my car called me back and told me the car was out of gas; the gas meter read approx 1/3 full. He reported that there is a problem with the gas meter in the model of 2008 car ( they have had other customers with this problem) they have ordered a new gas meter and said that they will replace the old one as soon as the part comes in. I am lucky no one rear ended me and the wasn't a multiple car accident due to drivers swerving so they wouldn't hit me. If this is a problem in the Volvo 2008 cx70, I think other Volvo owners should be alerted to the possibility and Volvo should identify and replace other faulty gas meters.
My 2002 Volvo xc 70 seems to smell like gasoline inside the car. I have read on numerous Volvo forums regarding Volvo owners that has the same or similar concerns. This cant be good for the driver(myself) or the vehicle. Any insight on a recall would be wonderful. Thank you for your time. Joe boylan . . . . A concerned Volvo driver. . . . . . .
Driving south on i95 near clinton, connecticut with two other SUV's for about two hours - medium to heavy flow traffic conditions. Driving normal speeds in the left lane when the car felt like it was starved for fuel and wouldn't react to the throttle control. Top speed was only about 35-40 mph and an indicator light flashed "performance degragation" or something like that. The car was able to get into the right lane, but then died and would not start for a period of time. A state trooper did pull up behind all three cars and lended some traffic assistance. After a while the car did start again and we were able to get to the nearest exit. Since we were still 2 hours from home and aaa couldn't get us physically home, we waited 1 hour and tried our luck. The car did get us home, but there was a very slight misfire present most of the way home that might have gone unnoticed in different circumstances. The next day Volvo of westport fixed the car and said it was the electronic throttle system - they replaced it, but said they couldn't guarantee that it wouldn't happen again in the near future. We love our Volvo xc90 and purchased it for safety only, but this problem is a serious concern for us, especially since we had 7 adults and three kids ranging from 16 months to 6 years of age stranded on i95 during heavy traffic!!!!!
the car is a Volvo xc90 2001 - I was assured by the westport dealer that the problem was fixed in the 2003+ models and we are considering an upgrade - if we can trust Volvo again.

For about a week the car was running rough with hesitation and a jerking feeling of loss of power. Then as my wife was driving home with our children the night of the 27th of July the car started to lose power completely to the point where she was forced to pull the car off the road. The information center on the car indicated "performance reduced" but offered no other information and the manual offered no other narrative. The car was taken to tom wood Volvo in indianapolis where the technician had a hunch right away that it was a faulty etm. Item was replaced with new which resulted in a bill of $1100. Since the problem I have been made aware that this is a common problem with this vehicle.
