Volvo XC70 owners have reported 17 problems related to seat belt (under the seat belt category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Volvo XC70 based on all problems reported for the XC70.
The seatbelts on the front driver and passenger side have failed to release when trying to unbuckle. This is a hazard. If there was a moment where it's imperative to leave the car (fire, water, etc) driver and passenger could get locked in their seatbelts without the ability to exit the vehicle. Volvo would have covered it if the factor warranty was still active. My complaint wa ignored while the vehicle was under warranty. Now that it is out of warranty I am forced to replace the failed parts out of my pocket.

On two p3 Volvo cars I have owned now, the front passenger and driver side seatbelt release button sometimes does not release the seatbelt, this happens almost daily and requires the button to be forcibly pressed to release, more commonly on the passenger side. Additionally, on two separate occasions, the passenger side seatbelt has slotted into the latch but was loose when tugged on, not being able to support any tension. This happened on both cars that I owned and with different passengers, where we would arrive at our destination and then they would go to press the button and the seatbelt simply disconnected. On my newer p3 car, (with the VIN here) I replaced the seatbelt catch device on the passenger side believing this was an issue with just the car, but the new replacement also had this issue. This is a serious safety issue as it prevents passengers from exiting the vehicle during an emergency and also may give a false sense of safety with the belt being latched, when really the slightest tug releases it.

When rear seats are folded to make more room for cargo, the seat belts retract more inwards due to the retractable hardware that retracts the belts. The button clips that are clamped into the belt that stops them from happening break apart easily due to the retracting force of the belt and when trying to fold back the seats the belts get locked and are unable to fold back to the original position, the only way to fix this is to unbolt the belts and fold back the seats and bolt back the seat belts. When this is done, passengers are not able to buckle in the rear seats due to the belt retractable hardware being locked. Is a safety issue because the passenger can not buckle and, when the belt works and are able to buckle, sometimes when braking hard the belt retrieves a little to keep the passenger in place and when this happens the belts lock back again having the passenger being tightened by the belt and unable to move freely and having difficulty trying to unbuckle in case of an emergency.

At age 6 years (53k mi. ), the front passenger seatbelt clasp began to refuse to latch when the belt buckle was inserted. Using a jeweler's headset, I could not see any foreign object causing interference. To rule out a bent buckle, I tested the clasp (after its removal) with 5 other buckles, and all failed to latch into the clasp every time. The clasp failure-to-latch showed no signs of gradual failure. The first notice was when a passenger tried to buckle up, and noticed it didn't latch. The car was still parked. The Volvo part that failed is 31369706 front right seatbelt clasp. I successfully replaced the part with a genuine Volvo replacement part from a Volvo dealer. A clasp latch-failure on this vehicle carries the extra hazard of inhibiting air-bag deployment, as the latch assy. Embeds a strain gauge which casts a necessary vote for air-bag activation. If interested, email me. Question: would NHTSA care to have me ship the failed clasp to do a mechanical failure analysis? it would be surrendered to NHTSA with no conditions.

Transmission issues, shifting, stop bump. Headlight issues wiring and hid ballast. Engine evap work done. Back drivers side seat belt locking mechanism faulty. Knocking clinging under carriage in suspension areas.
Wife was riding in passenger seat. We had taken her car and I was driving. Suddenly the shoulder harness got tight, she tried to roll it back to release it as is normal but, it stuck halfway out, too short to use and cannot be extended. Dealer said it was a bad seat belt re tractor. Price to fix $700. This is the passenger side front seat belt on a 54k mile car. It rarely gets used as wife is usually the driver an sole occupant. That belt probably hasn't been used 500 times. Car was bought new, no crashes, well maintained. This should never fail, let alone with hardly any use. At the time of happening I was driving on the highway at 65 mph on the freeway. . We were on an hour's drive, returning from relatives house.

I recently took my car in for service, 119,600 miles, and noted I was having a problem with the drivers seat belt latch not always releasing properly. The dealer contacted Volvo about it and was told they do not accept any responsibility for the defective seat belt latch.
Rear middle seat belt latch failed to work or secure person. It will not click. Local Volvo dealer is charging to repair the safety item.

Seat belt buckle (driver's seat) will not release under tension (dangerous after an accident) metal tab must be pushed into buckle to release at all. Dealer said it was unsafe to drive as it is, and not repairable; dealer replaced entire assembly at my expense. Now passenger side seatbelt buckle is beginning to malfunction in a similar matter.

Front passenger side seat belt does not retract efficiently. Sometimes the seat belt cannot be used at all. It's a safety risk. Volvo should replace the faulty seat belt for free.

Seat belt won't release consistently. Pressing the release button in feels "mushy" and there is no release click. I had the release replaced, but same issue. Later models (2014) worked crisply. I asked if they could install a later model release in my car, but told that is "illegal". Worried I might have trouble exiting the car in an accident.

Rear seat belt jams when seat folded down. Cannot raise seat leaving safety issues and inability to use sealbelt.
Nothing we know of caused this failure except folding the rear seat down in the cargo position. When we raised the seat up the seat belt wouldn't release. Now we don't have a seat we can use and no operating seatbelt. I tried to get the roll to release then took it to a dealer who refused to warranty it since I tried to unjam it.
This is a correction to complaint #10296298. Vehicle in connection to this complaint is a 2005 Volvo Xc70, not a 2009.

Our 2002 Volvo Xc70 has a tendency to jerk ?violently? forward ?shift flare? and harsh shifting problems at low and high speeds without warning and has done so on several occasions while riding with our family; frightening everyone in the vehicle and potentially causing a serious accident. The frequency has increased over the past year to the point we are unable to operate the vehicle without serious risk of injury or accident. We were denied warranty service by a south atlanta Volvo dealer (that has since gone out of business) and by Volvo north America during the warranty period. There are literally thousands of internet postings with the same complaints. Namely, there are several primary issues including but not limited to the ecu brain of the car malfunctioning, software malfunctions and tcm malfunctioning. The jerking is very freighting and could send one to the hospital with severe neck and nerve injury. We have contacted Volvo north America, Volvo worldwide and parent company Ford motors. The vehicle had an extended warranty contract that was breached by an authorized dealer and by Volvo north America.

I had experienced some instances of a delay in response by the throttle in my 2001 Xc70 for several months. Most times it was following an exit from a freeway and the subsequent attempted acceleration after stop was very hesitant and felt as if the clutch was slipping. I had an etm diagnostic run in may of 2007 at barrier motors Volvo in bellevue wa. And they found nothing wrong but said they could not get the car to repeat the problem. I had also experienced some infrequent instances of extra acceleration with minimal gas pedal pressure during the same time. On January 7, 2008 I was in line approaching a round-about and after the second slow move forward, I had no more than touched the gas pedal than my car surged forward into the rear of the van in front of me. I was only able to get my foot poised over the break pedal before impact. The car died and when I tried to restart immediately nothing would work. The people in the van had neck injuries, my seatbelt deployed and the retraction unit failed. Only the week prior to this I had started doing an on-line search about my transmission and found many blog complaints about similar problems but had not been to NHTSA site yet. Now I see there appears to be a concerted effort on the part of Volvo na to practice the same kind of obfuscator games that Ford mc has played all along. It reminds me very much of their sop for dealing with the pinto problem in the '70s. In looking at the NHTSA investigations and complaints I find, by looking in all the applications of topic and several other broad category searches the overall conclusion I have reached is that Volvo na/Ford mc are not being held accountable for all the expenses and grief they are causing the consumers. A full class action investigation is probably warranted and probably an involvement of a congressional oversight by the u. S. Department of transportation.
