The car makes a loud roaring sound at about 45-50 mph and the dealership says "probably the tires" but doing some research there seems to be a lot of people with similar problems and add to this it randomly downshifts while braking (or maybe it is the brakes) when coming to a stop which would cause the car to lose control on a snow/ice/slippery situation, this happens at a slower speed and only when slowing down at about 10-15 mph. I am not sure what is causing this and there are multiple complaints out on the internet and no real solutions.

When reversing out of our garage first thing in the morning, brakes were nearly inoperative and required an additional 10-15 feet of stopping distance. Unable to depress the brake (hard brake). I almost ran in to a tree and hit my dog. Dealer diagnosed as a faulty brake vacuum pump switch and brake vacuum. Scariest thing I have ever had happen. Luckily, no one was hurt as we were in a large driveway and my husband was able to get the dog out of the way. Thank goodness we had the extra space. If this had been in a parking lot, I would have hit another car or hit a person without question. There was a recall for earlier model Volvos (s40 & v40) and should be for any Volvo vehicles with the same switch/brake vacuum before someone is injured severely or worse, killed. Volvo is founded on the safety on their vehicles and should stand behind this issue 110%.

While backing out of a parking place, I felt a sensation of going over a bump. I stopped the car and examined around and under the car. No object or "bump" item was seen. I drove slowly and experienced metallic noises coming from the car. Upon having the car checked by my regular garage, it was determined that the emergency brake had broken. I have had it replaced (very expensive) and the mechanic said he had never seen this type of emergency break damage before. Other owners of this vehicle may be helped by this information.

My 2008 Volvo Xc70 spontaneously accelerated as I prepared to park. This happened on two occasions so far, and I am frightened to get behind the wheel again. The experience in both cases was almost identical. The car lurched forward suddenly as I slowed the car to park it. In both cases, my foot was depressed firmly on the brake. The car only accelerated to a few miles per hour, but both times the car stopped only once it collided: the first time with a fence, and the second time with a porch. The brake was seemingly useless. A field engineer inspected our car after the second crash but concluded that there was nothing wrong with the vehicle. My research online has revealed that sudden acceleration is an issue that Volvo did struggle with in many of their european models; however, according to Volvo, it was likely related to the fact that they ran on diesel fuel. I have found acceleration issues like mine reported with unleaded fuel engines in the us, but never with a 2008 Xc70. Volvo has yet to make reparations and we have been without a car for a month.
