2 Air Bag problem of the 2024 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 10/04/2025

Safety complaint – Volvo Xc90 electrical and airbag malfunction issues I am reporting ongoing safety concerns with my Volvo Xc90 related to electrical malfunctions and unexpected engine shutdowns while driving. The vehicle has suddenly turned off multiple times, including: •once before merging onto a highway, •once while entering a roundabout, and •once while driving in traffic. Each incident occurred without warning and created a hazardous situation with the potential for a collision. Additionally, the vehicle displayed an airbag malfunction warning once, raising concern about the reliability of the vehicle’s safety systems. The vehicle has been serviced multiple times, but the issues persist. I am requesting a formal investigation into these failures, as they pose a significant safety risk to the driver, passengers, and others on the road.

4 Air Bag problem of the 2021 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 07/20/2025

Title: possible defect – uneven airbag deployment description: on July 20, 2025, around 5:30 pm, I was driving a 2021 Volvo Xc90 on a main road when another vehicle suddenly entered from the right side without stopping at a stop sign. I was unable to avoid a collision and my vehicle t-boned the other car (front impact on my vehicle). During the crash, I believe the front airbag system did not deploy properly or deployed unevenly. I felt like the left side of the airbag (from the steering wheel) was full of air but not the right side (that side was flat when it deployed), and I believe I hit my head on the steering wheel. I experienced severe injuries to my head, face, and right eye, including commotio retinae, lens displacement, corneal abrasion, corneal edema, phacodonesis, iridodonesis, and concussion. I am concerned that the supplemental restraint system (srs) malfunctioned, contributing to the severity of my injuries. No modifications have been made to the airbag system. I request that NHTSA investigate whether there is a defect in the airbag deployment of the 2021 Volvo Xc90, particularly for asymmetric or partial deployment. The automatic emergency braking (aeb) system also did not activate despite the imminent collision. There were no warning lamps, messages, or unusual symptoms prior to the crash. The issue has not yet been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or service center, but the police was at the scene. My insurance company has inspected the vehicle. I have also reported this to the customer care team at Volvo.

6 Air Bag problem of the 2019 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 12/31/2024

The contact owns a 2019 Volvo Xc90. The contact stated that after stopping and parking the vehicle, the vehicle failed to turn off. The contact's fiancée arrived on the scene and was able to turn off the vehicle; however, the vehicle later failed to restart, and the gear shifter seized. The message "gear lever lock" was displayed. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed that the panoramic sunroof seal strip had a gap, allowing debris and water into the vehicle, clogging the drain, and rendering the vehicle inoperable. The mechanic disassembled the entire interior and allowed it to dry before reassembling. The contact was informed that the front passenger’s side air bag sensor, seat belt buckle, and seat belt tensioner needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact related the failure to technical service bulletin: tj 35503. 3. 0 (panoramic sunroof, sealing strip has a gap). The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 65,000.

7 Air Bag problem of the 2005 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 12/24/2024

I was getting off the highway and made a left turn. As I was accelerating the motor gentle cut off. . (you wouldnt even notice if you wasnt driving) full traffic was behind me, so luckily I was able to get out of the way and pull to shoulder. It was the day before christmas and car hasn't ran since. Upon investigation I found the cem was effected. When the car died I was in left hand lane and I had to make my way to right, the shoulder. Yes the problem was diagnosed by myself. However I did investigation and researched using all data at library. It has not been inspected by anyone else. There where no warning lamps or messages prior to the failure. It happened all of a sudden in the middle of traffic when I was getting off the highway.

8 Air Bag problem of the 2020 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 04/22/2024

The airbag system detected a fault and caused an automated vehicle warning message, which, with further dealer diagnosis, caused the driver seat belt to have a ground fault issue, preventing the normal, safe, and fully operating vehicle airbags. The cause and what must be replaced to rectify the problem are unknown. Volvo has poor customer support and satisfaction regarding avoidable repairs, along with various documented airbag failure incidents confirming a severe issue with its system components that require government oversight and correction through a recall to ensure the safety and reliability of the safety systems that protect lives.

9 Air Bag problem of the 2022 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 02/23/2024

I received an srs airbag, service urgent, drive to workshop warning. I took the car in six times the first two times they said it was a software update and they failed to update the software the third time they updated the software. It didn’t work the fourth time they said it was the passenger seat and the scale wasn’t working or connecting so it was throwing off the airbag. They fixed that, it didn’t change that warning. I still got the warning. And the last time they said it was a battery issue the battery wires weren’t connecting. They fix that, but after five minutes of driving out of the dealership and a repair shop, the warning came up again. I’ve sent an email to corporate asking for either a refund or or a new car in accordance with the lemon law of California. They want me to take it in the seventh time which I refuse to do because the car is on safe safe to drive and I have two kids that I cannot keep driving in this car.

10 Air Bag problem of the 2016 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 02/06/2024

When driving slowly to enter a parking garage, the steering wheel on the car started to feel stiff, and as I completed the turn, there was a loud snapping sound. The dashboard showed an urgent fault saying “srs airbag urgent - drive to workshop”. I drove it to the Volvo dealer. The steering wheel was having problems turning left. When the dealer attempted to move the car, it was then unable to turn left at all. So, the steering wheel completely failed.

11 Air Bag problem of the 2019 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 11/01/2023

There are many form online stating that Volvo has an issue with water leaking/water drainage line from the sunroof. The water leaked into some components of the airbag and electrical system. After the first time taking to the dealership they were no issue with the system and the vehicle was fine that incident happened back in 2020. The same issue happened again where water was leaking in from the sunroof area (I am assuming because it looks the same as last time) this time the water is in the driver side, and there was a puddle of water forming where the gas and brake paddles are. After noticing the water puddle I try to close the sunroof and turns out the sunroof no longer functions with the electronic control right in front of the sunroof. I also took the initiative to open some of the trims where the side air bags are and it turns out that the area are completely soaked. I do no know if this will cause an issue to the airbag or not but I am worries that prolong exposure to water will compromised the integrity of the airbag system. What's was is that since it affected the electronic for the sunroof what if it affect the sensors for the air bag system.

13 Air Bag problem of the 2016 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 02/28/2023

Hi, I had a 2016 Xc90 which has serious safety problems. The sunroof has a factory defect, leaking water into the car and causing failures in electronic systems and airbags. Many other owners have sued Volvo and won their cases. Additionally, the issue has been certified by the court, and there are technical bulletins published by Volvo addressing the problem. Yes. The water leak can damage entire electronic systems, such as airbags, the start-stop system, braking system, and lidar system. Once water enters any of these systems, it can lead to accidents and fires due to short circuits, posing a deadly risk. This issue can cause accidents or fires. No, but Volvo has published a bulletin, and there have been many court cases filed against Volvo since 2016. No, the vehicle has not been inspected. It's causing numerous random errors on the dashboard. This issue occurred approximately two weeks after I purchased the vehicle. . Read more...

Failure Date: 12/01/2022

The contact owns a 2007 Volvo Xc90. The contact stated that the air bag warning light was illuminated on the instrument cluster. The local dealer was contacted, and it was diagnosed that the failure was due to the air bag module. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, but the result was unknown. The manufacturer was contacted, and a recorded message referred her to the dealer. The approximate failure mileage was 80,000.

16 Air Bag problem of the 2016 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 06/14/2022

Srs airbag service urgent drive to workshop light has come on twice. I was told by dealership it is a faulty wire harness where the airbags could possibly deploy if I was in an accident. Volvo does have a recall for the exact issue yet my VIN does not fall in this recall.

17 Air Bag problem of the 2016 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 02/28/2022

Srs warning light and was told that is is due to a faulty misassembled wiring in the seat harness. Possibility of the airbags not deploying correctly in case of a crash. The dealer has confirmed that it is the seat harness that needs to be replaced. Due to the month/year of the vehicle it does not fall under the original recall which was only for vehicles that were manufactured between Jan/may 2015.

18 Air Bag problem of the 2016 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 02/25/2022

While driving the vehicle the "srs airbag" warning light comes on, I took the vehicle to the dealership which indicated the "seat harness" would need to be replaced. The seat harness has a integrated chip to alert the airbags to work properly. Volvo has had previously recalls for this issue on 2016 xc 90 vehicles but my VIN isn't included in the recall, I feel they need to expand the recall knowing their are several vehicles having this exact issue. Air bags are federally regulated and this is a safety related issue.

19 Air Bag problem of the 2017 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 10/01/2021

The contact owns a 2017 Volvo Xc90. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle, the air bag and check engine warning lights intermittently illuminated. Additionally, the message "pullover engine overheating" was displayed. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who diagnosed that failure was caused by the drain hose for the air conditioning leaking into the passenger’s side compartment due to a drain hose installation error during manufacturing. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The contact was informed that the vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 16v690000 (equipment, air bags). The contact indicated that the vehicle had experienced the failure listed in the recall. The failure mileage was 92,000.

20 Air Bag problem of the 2016 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 05/21/2021

Every 1500 miles or less, engine looses oil. Adding a quart of oil each week once it passes the 1500 trip mile. Also srs warning light has come on, was told it was the seat harness that has a airbag module in which the airbag possibly won’t deploy in an accident. Dealer indicated it is not covered nor will the manufacturer repair it. These two issues can cause the engine to get on fire and the airbags not deploy in an accident which I believe are safety related.

24 Air Bag problem of the 2011 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 07/08/2018

The built-in child safety seat in the middle cracked after the first time I opened it so I can't put it back down and don't know if it affects the child airbag. I asked Volvo about it and they told me it would be $500 just to simply look at it before deciding whether to fix it or if covered by the warranty. This isn't safe and I now have a child seat I can't use and a seat I can't put down. This isn't the first of complaints I have seen about this and am worried about the safety of my children aka sons. My VIN [xxx] and it's a 2011 Volvo Xc90. Thanks, [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

25 Air Bag problem of the 2010 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 07/06/2018

Tl- the contact owns a 2010 Volvo Xc90. The contact stated that the dasboard had deteriorated to the point that it was structurally unsound with if buckling in the area of the front passenger air bag components so the contact was uncertain if the failure may affect other components in the area of the dashboard. The dealer Volvo escondido 1938 auto park way, escondido, CA 92029 was notified, had not provided a diagnosis as to what was causing the failure and had only indicated that extreme heat in the area of the dashboard caused the failure. The vehicle was not repaired yet. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was not available. Dyd.

26 Air Bag problem of the 2005 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 04/15/2018

All the vehicle lights will come on over the dash and the wheel locks then it shuts off while I am driving. This is so unsafe for my family. I am not sure why there is not a recall for my VIN # when google clearly states that this is a hazard and that there are recalls for this problem.

27 Air Bag problem of the 2013 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 07/12/2017

Having bought a 2013 Volvo Xc90 with 36k miles on it, I was driving on a highway 2 weeks later when I saw smoke coming out of the engine. The engine stalled and shut down. I quickly pulled over the car and was able to get out as the smoke was increasing. Within 4-5 minutes, the car was on fire. It was completely gutted and destroyed. Volvo declined to accept blame and said that the cause of fire cannot be determined. This is supposed to be the safest car and I was surprised at their callous attitude. The dealer from summit NJ was far more professional. The highway it happened on was rt. 295 near princeton NJ. I hope others can learn from this debacle and get some help if there is a fundamental problem with 2013 Xc90. They did have a recall for the 2010 Xc90 for the same reason. I feel the cause was either an electrical short circuit or a problem with transmission.

28 Air Bag problem of the 2004 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 11/02/2016

While driving any distance over 60 minutes the car warning comes on saying sudden loss of brakes, stop safely. Airbag check light comes on. Within a few seconds all the electronics shuts down; all dash, stereo, lights, wipers, windows and lack of power to engine but car stays running. This was almost a deadly crash while driving in pouring rain and there were cars everywhere. No way to signal or flashers, I honestly thought me and my family were gonna get in an accident. I have read other stories online so my question is, what is the cause of this? how do I fix it before some gets hurt or even worse killed!.

29 Air Bag problem of the 2004 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 11/02/2014

Traveling on highway at 65 mph, hit a large deer, no air bag deployment. The deer smashed in the front end of vehicle.

30 Air Bag problem of the 2004 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 06/17/2014

While on the interstate at 60mph, experienced temporarily loss of power, the ip displays and an abnormal 'jerking' in the transmission/drivetrain. The srs airbag and brake failure error messages appeared in the ip error display. The wipers momentarily came on. Lights dimmed. Power failure was only for a split-second (at 60mph) before returning to normal. After normal power was restored, error messages continued to be shown in the ip error display. The brake failure message instructed me to pull over and bring the vehicle to a safe stop. Upon bringing the vehicle to a safe stop and turning off ignition, I heard excessive electrical clicking under the dash (like relays clicking). All ip displays were non-responsive (dark). I locked the car (alarm armed) and later returned with a tow-truck. Upon return to the car, I was unable to unlock it or disarm the alarm. Car was unresponsive. Alarm was armed (unable to be disarmed) and the engine bypass feature of the alarm prevented me from starting the car. Could only gain entry into the car from the driver's side door with physical key. Car was placed in neutral and loaded onto a flatbed truck for tow back to Volvo dealership. Temperature at time of failure was 110f.

31 Air Bag problem of the 2004 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 05/25/2014

While driving down the road around 50 mph the Xc90 skipped and temporarily turned off all elections. Thought it was a glitch so continued down the road more carefully. Then it happened again and the electronics never came back on. I couldn't make it up a small hill on the road to get safely home. My transmission wouldn't pull. The speed gauge and rpms were completely unworking. Windows would not roll down air had went out. Power steering temporarily went out. Made it home finally and nothing seems wrong now but there is obviously a problem that needs to be fixed. I could have easily been in a wreak or stranded on the side of the road with my babies. Volvo needs to take responsibility.

33 Air Bag problem of the 2004 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 07/09/2012

At highway speeds, the windshield wipers randomly start, followed immediately by a loud thump sound from the engine, also immediately followed by all the electrical items on the instrument panel going dark, all guages go to zero, speedometer doesn't work, radio goes dark and stops working along, a/c stops working, error message appear for the abs and srs. There is also an slight loss of engine power. Problem has occcured 4 times over the last year. Dealer could not replicate the problem on the first visit which is not surprising since the problem is completely random. On a more recent visit dealer says car needs a instrument panel module replacement at a cost of $1,500. According to my online research, this complaint is by far the most prevelent problem with this year and model by maybe a 20 to 1 margin.

34 Air Bag problem of the 2004 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 06/27/2012

While driving on a 40mph busy road, my cd player display began to flash, then a few seconds later, my srs air bag service urgent message came on. Everything continued to flash and then all my instruments (speedometer, rev counter, turn signals) all died. Lucky I was passing my dealer who I just bought the car from and able to turn into it. After braking, I could not accelerate the car and had to let the momentum carry me into to the lot. I have had the car for 5 days now. I noticed on the first day that simple things were not quite right, including my mirror button only working half the time as well as my window control. Also my wipers would turn on randomly. This seems to be a very common problem with this year and model car if you read any Volvo forums. It seems it has happened to enough people that there should be a recall on the electronics of this car. People's safety are great risk with the failure of these said item in the car.

35 Air Bag problem of the 2004 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 06/01/2012

All interior lights, guages, windshield wipers randomly shut down at freeway speeds and at idle. Engine power is also affected as unable to accelerate properly. Dealer replaced driver information module however problem continues. Dealer unable to source the problem as the vehicle needs to be in the process of failing for them to source the problem. This has not been possible as the issue is random and typical goes away after the car sits for several hours. The service airbag and brake failure code remains in the driver information module. This is a serious safety issue especially at freeway speeds and at night.
