2 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2005 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 12/24/2024

I was getting off the highway and made a left turn. As I was accelerating the motor gentle cut off. . (you wouldnt even notice if you wasnt driving) full traffic was behind me, so luckily I was able to get out of the way and pull to shoulder. It was the day before christmas and car hasn't ran since. Upon investigation I found the cem was effected. When the car died I was in left hand lane and I had to make my way to right, the shoulder. Yes the problem was diagnosed by myself. However I did investigation and researched using all data at library. It has not been inspected by anyone else. There where no warning lamps or messages prior to the failure. It happened all of a sudden in the middle of traffic when I was getting off the highway.

3 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2024 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 12/10/2024

Instrument cluster failure and turn signal malfunction while highway driving. No interior sounds, including no lane change warning or near collision warning signals, and no audible confirmation of signal; no exterior blinker activated despite use by driver. Instrument cluster went blank. Safety at risk and accident occurred: approaching car from rear passenger side hit front right side of our car because there was no exterior signal and no audio or visual alerts in our vehicle about lane change or blind spot. Signal and instrument cluster failure: the car is at the manufacturer/dealer for the third time for similar issues with our vehicle (2 prior times they stated the issue was fixed). Manufacturer reports that they're sending a team to investigate given that this most recent episode lead to an accident.

4 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2016 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 03/01/2024

The car has a factory fault with the windshield wiper or turn signal contact switch, which is causing the inability to use the left/right signal and the wipers. The entire part is factory faulty, rendering the vehicle unable to operate safely. This affects visibility during wet conditions because the wipers cannot be activated due to the malfunctioning switch, which can lead to serious accidents. Additionally, malfunctioning left/right turning signals can also cause serious accidents, as it is a crucial function. Yes, the vehicle is available upon request. I contacted Volvo, but they declined to fix the issue. They have published a technical bulletin regarding the problem but are not recalling the vehicles. Many other Volvo models have the same factory defect, as can be found on the internet. The technical bulletin confirms their fault. I have attached the file. No, the vehicle has not been inspected. Yes, the vehicle shows a "turn indicator malfunction" message on the main screen. This issue started around 89k miles.

In any gear I try to shift there was no warning in the vehicle no light turned on the only light that it was turned on was the one with the check engine because of the Cadillac converter but other than that no other lights were coming out or flashing.

Electrical, brake lights suddenly stopped working on both sides at once. I checked the fuse only to be told a relay may be the issue. The location of said relay is vague and not serviceable by owner. Risk of rear end collision. Of following traffic.

7 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2004 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 10/16/2021

While driving on the highway "srs urgent" text came on, also hear clicking sounds under dash on driver side, then dashboard indicator lights completely disappear (speed, fuel, temperature, etc) . Extremely hot under driver side dash. Fortunately, still able to steer and brake. This has happened twice now. Mechanic believes most likely cem failure or dim failure. My vehicle also has a wet a-pillar fabric (Volvo forums indicate possible cause of failure). I removed drivers a-pillar and found a clogged drain tube from the sunroof. However, did not notice any obvious signs of water inside the vehicle, though it hasnt rained for over a month when this happened.

9 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2004 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 06/30/2018

Similar to many others, while driving our 2004 Volvo Xc90, we hear a click, then the climate, radio and windshield wipers (if on) shut off and their display lights black out, then another click in a fraction of a second and they come back on. This was happening randomly, and nothing else was affected, until this weekend, while on a trip. We were driving on highways, outside temp in the 80's, no rain, average speed about 70mph. It happened a few times over about 45 minutes, then began happening every 5 miles or so. When I turned up the ac fan, within about a minute it clicked and we lost the usual things, but they did not come back on. Then we heard another click and lost all dashboard lighting and controls; we could not see the instrument panel, the climate control was blowing hot air and could not be shut off or turned down, and we had no idea what speed we were going as it was nighttime. Extremely frightening and dangerous. We made it to the first exit that had a gas station and stopped. The car was very hard to accelerate when we got off at the exit as well. I was able to open the windows but when I opened the moon roof, it stopped half way and then would not close or open. We were stranded for hours awaiting a family member to come get us and then hours longer waiting for the vehicle to be towed. Our mechanic researched this and encouraged me to report, as he said there seem to be hundreds of reports of similar things happening with this year, make and model vehicle.

10 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2007 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 10/28/2015

In a nutshell: at approximately 8:35 Wednesday morning (October 28th), my Volvo Xc90 spontaneously caught fire in the pouring rain. I was in the car at the time. Thankfully nobody was hurt. Toronto fire services and toronto police services both attended the scene. The most frightening part of this incident is the fact that it was completely spontaneous and very close to the gas tank! obviously it was the result of an electrical malfunction. Thankfully another driver alerted me to the fact that my car was on fire - as it was not apparent to me - and I was able to leave the vehicle safely. I shudder to think of the potentially fatal gas explosion which would have followed, had we not been able to extinguish the fire as quickly as we did. Please see link with videos and photos of the incident and resulting damage: https://goo. Gl/photos/jwbdabcrjdn7vxj77.

11 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2005 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 07/01/2015

Front head lamps go out while driving. This happened at night. The next day I drove the car and the lights were on but one is very dim. I have already replaced this light. It is still dim and I got a warning from a police officer on 01/30/16. He stated this is a safety hazard and next time I would get a ticket.

12 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2004 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 10/18/2014

Driving along a rural road in e. Oregon at around 7:30 pm and all front lights went out at once (all of them). This caused a dangerous situation as we were not in a cell phone area and had to sleep in car overnight and drove out of area at daylight the next day. The car worked fine except for a complete lighting failure, which is important as you are driving down country roads in the dark.

13 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2004 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 07/12/2014

2004 Volvo Xc90 2. 5t . . . Driving at about 65 mph with no warning aloud thump noise, windshield wiper comes on radio goes off dash lights go off, last for a sec. Then resumes to normal . This has happened several times now, while I have only owned this vehicle for a month. Today it happens again only worse . . After the initial thump and jerk it happens three more within 5 miles the last time I was going about 35 mph, big thump and jerk, wipers comes on , radio goes off , all dash lights off . . No hazards available and I get several warnings on dash brake failure , srs failure and anti skid failure. . I turn car off then back on and continue home. . . It happens again 5 minutes later at 15 mph. . . . I am reading many, many complaints like mine. This issue needs to be addressed ASAP. . I almost was rear ended twice. Volvo needs to take responsibility.

14 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2004 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 04/18/2014

On two separate occasions, our vehicle would not restart after stopping for gas. This occurred after it was serviced and battery replaced a week prior. Aaa was unable to jump start it as well, and vehicle had to be towed back to dealership for repairs. According to the two separate dealerships, the central electronics module is the culprit, and needed replacing. Across multiple online forums, Volvo owners have complained about similar problems with the cem, often placing drivers and occupants in danger as they experienced complete electrical outage at highway speeds. We were fortunately that our vehicle just did not restart, instead of shutting down in traffic at 65 mph. This is a significant safety issue, and Volvo should be responsible for replacing the faulty units.

15 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2004 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 03/06/2013

I was driving on the highway at 60 miles an hour and the car completely shut off. No lights, no engine, no power steering, no dash lights. The car went completely dead. I pulled over and let the car rest and then it started up again. I noticed the second time it happened when I took my foot off the accelerator. I took it to arbormotion in ann arbor mi and they told me a code came up and some part had to be cleaned. When I took my foot off the accelerator there was not enough air going through the part to allow gas to flow. They fixed the part and a month later, the same thing happened on the highway only this time however, unlike the first time, just the lights stayed on. I went to the same shop and they said it was another code. I could have been killed on the highway. This should not have happened.

16 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2004 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 07/02/2012

Front lights go off got a ticket for that reason and only thru that ticket did I know that the lights go off it happens once in a while and when so I have to go to side of the road and turn car off and turn on again, wont happen for a period and then surprise it happens again. We bought the car used and we dont know if there is any recalls it might not have been taken care of.

17 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2005 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 08/03/2011

Volvo Xc90 2005, turning signal acts dangerously. Sometimes it works but most time no action happens. Completely dead and restarting car sometimes fix the problem. Multiple cases of dangerous incidents due to no signal.

18 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2004 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 05/01/2011

Engine warning light alerted a "bulb failure". Replacement of the headlamp cartridge did not fix the problem. Since the incident happened, I noticed several other Xc90 SUV's with same daylight lamp out on the driver side.

19 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2004 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 03/02/2011

I was driving, and just as it started to get dark, I noticed that my lights did not seem to be working. I stopped at a parking lot to check, and the lights were in fact not working. If I had not been close to home, it would have been a perilous drive home; and, if it happened half an hour later, I would have been on a busy highway with no lights.

20 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2006 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 09/15/2010

Intermittent lighting failure in the Volvo Xc90 2006 model. The headlamps just fail. Volvos are supposed to be safe. My family and I could have been seriously injured or worse. I have spent thousands of dollars to fix the issue and I still have the problem. I can not drive at dusk or at night because of this.

21 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2005 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 12/01/2009

I have a 2005 Volvo Xc90 awd. My head lights have intermittent failures almost every time I am driving at night. It started about 10 months ago and has been getting more frequent. Sometimes left head light fails, sometimes right head light fails, sometimes both go out. They will resume working, sometimes if I do nothing, but always if I turn them off & back on. But will continue to fail. The dealer said they cannot find any problem.

22 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2003 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 10/01/2009

Operating vehicle since oct '08, since that time there has been a noise emanating from front pass-side wheel area. Purchasing dealer(hall chevy, chesapeake, va) performed wheel-alignment to "fix" the noise which did not remedy. Volvo dealer in arvada, CO diagnosed it as failed, or failing wheel hub, to be replaced at cost of $500. This vehicle also had trans failure at appx 76k miles, and throttle control module failure in oct '09. I believe there are many concerns about operating and having confidence in its ability to operate "safely and reliably" the vehicle has been in the shop nearly as much as on-the-road since it's I purchased it in oct '08.

23 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2005 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 03/15/2009

I have a 2005 Volvo Xc90 in which my low beam light just cuts out. It started about a year ago. It happens all of the time now. It has not been fixed yet. I was looking for possible information on this problem and learned that an investigation is underway now and that a recall may be issued. I just wanted to make you aware of another vehicle with the same problem. I also learned today that a friend with a Volvo crosscountry wagon had the same problem until the cem was replaced.
