2 Power Train problem of the 2024 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 07/16/2025

The park button does not always engage the park setting. Instead it takes 2-3 presses for park to engage. It happens several times a week when I am driving the vehicle multiple times per day. I come to a complete stop, press the park button, wait for my dash to show I’m in park, if it doesn’t, I press it until it does. This has resulted in the vehicle rolling forward several times while passengers were trying to exit the vehicle, because I had not first checked to be sure the park button worked. Huge safety concern. I have owned this vehicle since August 2023 and it has happened at about this frequency since I’ve owned the vehicle. For the first time, my vehicle actually trolled enough to hit an appliance in my garage. I have a maybe related issue with the infotainment system freezing since I’ve owned the vehicle as well. The screen will freeze and we have to reset it by holding down the clean screen button for like 20 seconds.

3 Power Train problem of the 2024 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 07/11/2025

After pushing "p" button to shift into park, the car moves slightly several seconds after the button is pushed. This can be a hazard if someone opens to door and the car then moves.

4 Power Train problem of the 2017 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 09/22/2024

The park neutral position (pnp) switch malfunctions. Yes not a huge safety issue if you are parked in your driveway and cannot start the car. But if you are driving and the if you have the engine auto start/stop engaged the car will unexpectedly not restart and you have to play with the gear shifter to get it started to move out of an intersection or out of the way of traffic! this has happened several times with my wife and myself. I have not had it confirmed by a dealer or service center no no.

5 Power Train problem of the 2024 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 08/30/2024

The system that starts the vehicle, called a igs failed yet again. This failed at 700 miles in downtown chicago on the street blocking traffic. Now several months later today going on a trip and the vehicle dies in the middle of the street blocking traffic. Was unable to restart the vehicle again. Attempted to contact Volvo customer service and was on hold over 25 minutes without talking to someone. Tried to find a way to put vehicle into neutral to safely move out of the way, but this vehicle has no way to manually overrride it. It posed a safety risk and could of easily caused an accident.

6 Power Train problem of the 2021 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 08/27/2024

Vehicle steer violently on pilot assist and powertrain disabled, not allowing us to steer the wheel on a highway. (last year) we were lucky no other cars were nearby, needed a reboot for the wheels to work again. Dealership isn’t sure what happened. Now we have a hybrid system failure which a lot of cars with the same model Xc90 t8 is having with the hybrid system. Please investigate into this.

7 Power Train problem of the 2023 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 07/04/2024

Third instance of reduced engine performance warning system taking over the car, which results in the "turtle mode" coming on and throttling vehicle speeds. The car does not respond to gas except at lower speeds. Then the check engine light also came on.

8 Power Train problem of the 2023 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 06/03/2024

Check engine light comes on every few weeks. Dealer inspects, resets, and says software issues. Now engine performance lights and "turtle mode" has come on twice throttling my speed while driving. Again no known cause and just resetting. Currently in a loaner vehicle while they research.

9 Power Train problem of the 2022 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 03/22/2024

I was going 60 mph when the check engine light came on , the car started to jerk and reduce speed. I pulled onto the shoulder until the car stopped. I than proceeded to drive slowly and the turtle appeared on the dash. I drove about another mile until I reached my home doing 30 miles per hour or less.

10 Power Train problem of the 2024 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 01/10/2024

Park fails to engage when pressing the p button adjacent to the shifter. It will, however, engage 100% of the time when applying additional pressure. The button doesn’t actually travel any further when applying the additional pressure, but park will engage. It’s even possible to push the button down fully, hold it for several seconds, and then apply additional pressure to cause it to engage. The tactile response of the button occurs too soon before activation.

11 Power Train problem of the 2020 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 03/08/2023

The vehicle shudders randomly when taking off from a stopped position around 18mph. The vehicle shudders randomly when slowing down to make a right turn. The vehicle shudders when driving at higher speeds. It's not a violent shudder, but those riding in the vehicle feel it as well. The safety concern is two fold in that there is a fear of losing control at an inopportune time. Secondly, the constant shuddering over time is going to result in damaging other part of the vehicle, particularly the engine, that will present a safety hazard while driving. The vehicle was purchased used(certified). The dealer replaced collapsed engine mounts on left and right side and considered it resolved. Forman at dealer stated it is common with Xc90's to have engine shudder as if this should be accepted. Because the engine shudder is happening at higher speeds now, we're going to return to dealer, but I do not expect a solution. I've seen others report similar issues with shuddering on Volvo forums and I haven't seen 1 solution that worked. This is a problem in a lot of Xc90's. The attached documents also contain some attempted fixes to correct a drifting issue.

12 Power Train problem of the 2023 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 02/21/2023

The contact owns a 2023 Volvo Xc90. The contact stated that before exiting the vehicle, he pressed the park button and the vehicle inadvertently started to reverse. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where the vehicle was diagnosed but no cause for the failure was found. The contact stated that the gear shifter and parking brake failed to engage as needed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 1,000.

13 Power Train problem of the 2016 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 02/15/2023

The vehicle exhibits excessive oil consumption due to defective oil control rings, as highlighted by quality bulletin p10186. Additionally, the sunroof leaks, as noted in technical journal 31272 and tj 35503. 3. 0, and there are further issues with the windshield wiper/turn signal system, the parking brake system, and the steering wheel module. Yes, the vehicle is available for inspection upon request. The excessive oil consumption and related engine issues can lead to engine damage and potential failure while driving, posing a serious safety risk. The sunroof leakage could impair visibility and cause electrical failures. The persistent dashboard warning messages and system malfunctions further distract and endanger the driver and others on the road. Yes, the problem has been reproduced and confirmed by various dealers and independent service centers, as indicated by numerous customer cases, court rulings, and a class-action lawsuit. Yes, the vehicle has been inspected by the manufacturer and documented in various technical journals and bulletins. There is no specific mention of inspection by police or insurance representatives. Yes, there were several warning lamps and messages, including the low oil light, check engine light, and messages related to the parking brake and windshield wiper/turn signal system. Symptoms such as slow acceleration, loss of power, higher tailpipe emissions, and a foul odor from the exhaust were also observed. These issues appeared shortly after acquiring the vehicle and persisted despite multiple repair attempts. The incident is primarily caused by engineering flaws and faulty materials, particularly the defective oil control rings leading to excessive oil consumption. Despite engine replacements, the problem persisted, indicating a fundamental design flaw. The sunroof leakage and other system malfunctions further suggest widespread safety and durability issues in the vehicle, rendering it unsafe to operate.

14 Power Train problem of the 2017 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 02/15/2022

While driving in hybrid mode while both the gasoline and electric motor are running or shifting back and forth, occasionally the electric motor will come on with a sharp, sometimes loud, metallic “bang”. The sound and feel appears to be coming from the rear. The last two times it happened, the car lunged forward on its own without additional pressure on the accelerator, and once over the past week it lunged forward near an intersection when lifting off the accelerator pedal and engaging the brake. The lunge almost caused me to rear end the car in front of me which I was not very close to. This occurs about once every 50 miles travelled or once per day and at various speeds. To date it has not generated a cel or any other type of warning.

15 Power Train problem of the 2021 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 10/05/2021

Check engine light illuminated at 11,000 miles. Diagnostics showed a software update was needed but the software update did not fix the problem. Volvo corporate said the iem module needed to be replaced. The iem module controls the rear axle / propulsion and this is a serious safety issue because sudden loss of propulsion while driving at high speeds increases risk of having an accident. After replacing the iem module, the mechanic cleared the dtc codes, test drove the car, and re-ran the dtc - and the code indicating a software update was still needed was present. Also the hybrid battery doesn’t keep its charge and depletes at an extremely fast rate.

16 Power Train problem of the 2016 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 04/04/2021

The attached file outlines details - 1. After a recent car wash at a shell service station…. . April 5,2021, upon starting the vehicle – the computerized dashboard displayed erratic and incomplete information. It attempted to indicate multiple system failures – eg brakes, suspension, and others too garbled to understand. The entire driver’s console and information center display which were designed to show all of the vehicle operating modes and driver information were compromised and not functioning correctly. The start/stop switch would no longer shut the engine down. I could not get the vehicle to shift out of park. I found myself quite concerned about a highly computerized vehicle now running with no apparent operator control. I could not be certain whether the engine was being cooled properly from its electrical fans because the cabin was becoming uncomfortably hot. None of the environmental controls worked. Even the electric windows were affected. There were no engine safety indicators of any kind visible working to ensure electrical, engine oil pressure, coolant temperature…. None of the other operator information systems were working properly and the engine still could not be shut down. I found myself uncomfortable getting out of the vehicle since it has so many self-driving, collision avoidance steering and braking functions that could be affected. I did not want to risk being run over by my own car. Nor, could I allow the vehicle to move, possibly on its own…so I sat in it for about 3 hours sweating while waiting for a Volvo tow service to arrive. The tow operator was somehow able to get the gear shift to move and was able to back the vehicle out to the street and onto his truck. He was also unable to shut the engine down and towed it to the neillo Volvo dealership about 3. 5 miles away, here in sacramento CA. I had deep concerns about safety with this vehicle being towed with the engine still running. All of the instrumentation remained unusable.

17 Power Train problem of the 2004 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 04/13/2020

I am concerned these 2 issues may pose a safety risk. I recently purchased this car from a friend and have had it about a month. I notice the steering is very stiff and difficult to maneuver. I was trying to find out if there were any recalls on this but having no luck. Also, when the car is in gear "drive", when stopped on an incline (even the slightest hill) I notice that when I take my foot off the brake pedal the car rolls backwards! it shouldn't do that. The transmission notice on the dash is saying it needs service but my friend I bought it from said she had it checked twice and was told there is no transmission issue. Is there a recall on power-train/trans parts? the car should not roll backwards when in gear "drive", even if I am stopped on a hill. Even a slight incline and the car rolls back. Not normal. Thank you for any and all help you can offer. This isn't an "incident" but I do not know who else to contact for help.

20 Power Train problem of the 2018 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 12/11/2018

Sometimes when the start stop system is activated at a stop and you start back off the vehicle accelerates forward without depressing the accelerator. On 3 occasions it caused me to almost run into things. I reported it to Volvo and they said the system is fine.

22 Power Train problem of the 2017 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 09/18/2018

On 2018-09-17, the vehicle, a 2017 Volvo Xc90 t8 hybrid, reported an error stating "reduced performance" within the instrument gauge. The vehicle continued to drive, without the hybrid system, only working on the gas engine. The vehicle was driven approximately 3 miles after the error message appeared. The next day, 2018-09-18, the vehicle was started, with the same error. After driving less than a quarter of a mile, the vehicle abruptly halted in the middle of an intersection, and then limited the vehicle speed to 17 miles per hour. The vehicle was returned to it's origin, unable to exceed the 17 mph restriction, and a tow truck was called in. The vehicle was at the nearest Volvo dealer for repairs for 20 days undergoing repairs. As of 2018-10-15, the vehicle has begin to exhibit a similar problem as was originally reported with 2 months of vehicle purchase in September, 2017, and what led to a multi-day repair in early September, 2018, prior to this incident occurring in mid September, 2018.

23 Power Train problem of the 2004 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 06/30/2018

Similar to many others, while driving our 2004 Volvo Xc90, we hear a click, then the climate, radio and windshield wipers (if on) shut off and their display lights black out, then another click in a fraction of a second and they come back on. This was happening randomly, and nothing else was affected, until this weekend, while on a trip. We were driving on highways, outside temp in the 80's, no rain, average speed about 70mph. It happened a few times over about 45 minutes, then began happening every 5 miles or so. When I turned up the ac fan, within about a minute it clicked and we lost the usual things, but they did not come back on. Then we heard another click and lost all dashboard lighting and controls; we could not see the instrument panel, the climate control was blowing hot air and could not be shut off or turned down, and we had no idea what speed we were going as it was nighttime. Extremely frightening and dangerous. We made it to the first exit that had a gas station and stopped. The car was very hard to accelerate when we got off at the exit as well. I was able to open the windows but when I opened the moon roof, it stopped half way and then would not close or open. We were stranded for hours awaiting a family member to come get us and then hours longer waiting for the vehicle to be towed. Our mechanic researched this and encouraged me to report, as he said there seem to be hundreds of reports of similar things happening with this year, make and model vehicle.

24 Power Train problem of the 2004 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 06/28/2018

Transmission does not shift correctly. Numerous of problems involving others. Needs to be replaced. On highway did not want to go during rush hour traffic. Could of been seriously injured by oncoming traffic when they obviously know that the transmission is a problem.

25 Power Train problem of the 2014 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 04/25/2018

Purchased 2014 xc 90, 5,200 miles on it March 2018. Steering wheel vibration issue reported by me 5/2018 . It doesn't matter if it is in neutral, drive, reverse with the brake depressed. When turning the steering wheel left or right,it vibrates. Now feeling more vibrations from engine/steering wheel when accelerating. Volvo USA/sweden techs have been involved. It is now Dec. 2018. Motor/transmission mounts, steering wheel oscillator, power steering pump/pulley replaced, engine torque mounts adjusted. Being told this is "characteristic" of this engine. Between 2008 to 2014 the 2. 3l engine, which was originally designed for the landrover, was not designed for the xc. The engine cabin was designed for the 5 cyc. Volvo has determined there is nothing else that can be done to correct the vibration, period. They say no safety, engine, transmission, drive train concerns. I'm chagrined this is acceptable to them. Has been serviced 9 different times between 5/18 to 12/18. Volvo has been paying for all charges since first reported even though it has been out of warranty. Not sure what else to do? thanks for any suggestions. Ken.

27 Power Train problem of the 2016 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 02/01/2017

The SUV has had lots of problems with the engine. The engine has stopped without warning numerous times while in motion. It even stopped one time on the highway. The vehicle loses power in an instance and few times we have had to tow the vehicle to our house and to the dealership for repair. Even though this problem has occured over and over (which the dealership has attributed to the pistons misfiring), the dealership can not seem to repair the issue. We have asked dealership/Volvo to buy back the vehicle as it is not driveable at all. Everytime we get the vehicle returned after the repair from the dealership, between 100-300 miles the engine light comes on again and makes the SUV not driveable. We have complained numerous times to the dealership to no avail. The service manager has confided in us that this issue has occured on almost all the Volvo Xc90 from 2016 and onwards.

28 Power Train problem of the 2005 Volvo XC90

The contact stated that the vehicle experienced the same failure listed in the recall. The failure mileage was 172,000.

30 Power Train problem of the 2012 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 10/03/2016

There appears to be an intermitent defect with the transmission when the vehicle gets wet. When wet the vehicle lock up and not easily go into forward or reverse. This occasionally occurs after going through a car wash or when the vehicle is driven in wet weather and then, parked. After a few hours, when it is attempted to put the vehicle in gear, the transmission is locked up and the vehicle won't move. Only by rocking the vehicle does the transmission loosen up and the vehicle goes into reverse. The parking brake is not engaged. This issue is mentioned multiple times on Volvo related forums.

31 Power Train problem of the 2016 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 09/04/2016

While driving at @35mph on a busy city street the car decelerated suddenly without warning and the drivers instrument panel went out, giving me, the driver a blank screen. Car would not accelerate and slowed to about 5mph. No previous indication of this happening. Spoke with 2 Volvo service departments and both providers stated this has happened to other cars before. This is a huge safety defect especially on a brand new car. What if I had been on a freeway going 70mph and the car decelerates all of a sudden? very concerned that my children and I will die in a crash getting rear ended on the freeway if this should happen again.

32 Power Train problem of the 2016 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 08/27/2016

The dashboard instrument panel suddenly went blank on a city street and the car could not accelerate more than about 5-10 miles per hour. It's frightening to imaging what would have happened if this occurred on a highway. Volvo's towing company put rear wheels on ground and damage all wheel drive system during towing. After stayed at dealership for a month but within 48 hours after pickup, a warning message "all wheel drive service required" popped up.

33 Power Train problem of the 2016 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 06/26/2016

Around 10. 30 am on Sunday, 26th June 2016, I was driving on I-95 (near stamford CT) with my family when the car suddenly lost power, slowed down dramatically in the middle of I-95 and started to crawl at 10 miles/hour. We were in danger of being hit by a number of vehicles while I negotiated to exit the highway on exit 9 and pulled over into a side street. The instrumentation panel of the car had blanked out. The car could only crawl at about 10 miles/hour. It would not shift to higher gear even in manual mode. I called the Volvo on call and they advised me to switch off the car, exit the car and then re start the car after five minutes. I did that and the problem still persisted. I some how drove the car to the nearest Volvo dealership (stamford Volvo) which was closed on Sunday. Dropped the car off in the lot, rented a car and drove 200 miles back to boston.

34 Power Train problem of the 2016 Volvo XC90

35 Power Train problem of the 2004 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 05/29/2016

2004 Volvo Xc90 sudden engine stall with lose of headlights: I was traveling on the interstate at night with the cruise set at 75 mph when suddenly it was like someone turned the ignition key to off for about 3 seconds, and then turned the key back on without restarting the engine. With all the warning lamps illuminated, and the engine at a stall I pulled into the emergency lane, and stopped. I then shifted to park and attempted to start the vehicle, where it took several attempts to start. The headlights did not stop working while pulling over, and when I stopped I switched the lights off before I restarted the engine. The first thing at mind was a fuel pump that was starting to act up. After restarting I revved the engine up a few quick times (to clear the engines throat). I then got back on the interstate accelerating to 75 mph , but doing so manually this time(no cruise control). About 10 min had passed when suddenly the engine started losing power as I was having to press the accelerator harder to maintain speed. While still coasting at 65 mph or so I placed the transmission into neutral, and attempted to restart the engine, when I turned the key to the start position I lost all the lights, I quickly released the key to the on position, and the lights remained off. I quickly pulled to the emergency lane and used the force to avoid the guardrail and the ditch. All the warning light were illuminated, and the engine was at a stall. I then turned the ignition key off and then back on, and that restored the headlights. It took 5-8 attempts to restart the engine, and again I'm thinking fuel pump acting up. Each time I attempted to restart the engine it would spit and sputter like if the fuel pump were only delivering half the pressure needed for the fuel injectors. After the engine restarted I made it home, and the problem has not arisen since,.
