3 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2004 Acura TL

Failure Date: 03/15/2018

I bought a used 2004 Acura Tl that has run fine for 6 months so far. Just last night, when stationary and trying to move forward my transmission started slipping, stalling out and ramping up to 5000 rpm. After a green light with cars behind me and I can't move an inch. I take my car to a transmissions specialist to learn that there is coolant mixing with my transmission fluid. There was a NHTSA recall on the automatic transmissions for Acura Tl's in 2004. Recall number 04v176000 . The transmissions specialist said that in 23 years working he couldn't remember the last time he saw this problem in a Honda, he thought they called back those coolers. Anyway, calling my local Acura dealer, they just looked up my VIN and told me there is no recall assigned to my car, and therefore they can't do the recall work. Yet I have the exact problem described in the recall! I read that manufacturers are only required to do recall work for 10 years but they might do older work (14 yrs) in this case since there are so many old cars still on the road, or if it poses a risk to the road (which in this case it certainly does). I'm looking at a $2600 fix that I feel should be addressed by the manufacturer and I'm being blown off. 'on some vehicles, certain operating conditions can result in heat build-up between the countershaft and secondary shaft second gears in the automatic transmission, eventually leading to gear tooth chipping or gear breakage. '.

4 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2002 Acura TL

Failure Date: 10/31/2016

Takata recall my Acura Tl was driving fine and all of a sudden, the transmission started to slip and jerk while on the highway I-25 in colorado, putting my life in grave danger. I tried pulling over in castle rock colorado at an auto zone to see if stop slip fluid in the transmission but that did no justice. As I was looking to get it fixed, I seen in the internet that there was a recall on this vehicles transmission. So I hope I can get this fixed and back running soon. Otherwise I may never get another Acura model car in my lifetime.

5 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2002 Acura TL

Failure Date: 10/08/2016

While driving my transmission slips and my car stops moving. The transmission was worked on in 2005 for the recall issue. After doing research it is known that the 2005 repairs did not really work. At 120k miles the transmission is out again. In the morning it drives fine until it gets hot duplicating the initial recall symptoms. The car has been at Acura for a month and diagnosed as duplicating the . A month later Acura decides not to stand behind there vehicle. I have a Hyundai and Dodge with over 200k miles and I have never had any drivetrain issues.

The contact owns a 2002 Acura Tl. The contact stated that the gears had been slipping and slow to change over with a sudden jerk or lunge. The rpms would race intermittently once the gears changed and the engine and emissions warning indicators illuminated. The dealer (rivertown Honda, 4260 kenowa Ave sw, grandville, mi 49418, (616) 667-4500) cleared the codes, but the codes returned on the instrument panel within 48 hrs. 9 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2001 Acura TL

Failure Date: 01/07/2013

I spoke to a gentleman from the NHTSA on 2/6/13 who informed me that the recall pertaining to the 2001 Acura Tl transmission, 2nd to 3rd gear slippage that can result in transmission lockup and crash, is still valid through April of 2014, with no mileage restrictions and is to be replaced at the full cost of the manufacturer (NHTSA recall I. D. 04v176, Acura recall I. D. P39). In an attempt to have a productive conversation with an Acura client relations representative on 2/19/13, in hopes of having the transmission replaced as the vehicles transmission is deteriorating rapidly, I was told that the gentleman who I spoke with from the NHTSA was incorrect in the information he provided and that the recall has already expired. I would like the NHTSA to please contact myself and Acura client relations, in writing, explaining that the recall pertaining to the 2001 Acura Tl transmission is still valid so that I may take the necessary steps in having the transmission replaced ASAP and avoid having a major incident as I fear for mine and my family's safety.

10 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2002 Acura TL

Failure Date: 10/03/2011

I was in heavy stop and go traffic in dallas, texas, when my car car started jolting foward during initial acceleration. I took it in to the Honda dealer in my hometown since there is not an Acura dealership there. They told me it was transmission slippage after they took it for a test drive. They performed a transmission service, and I was informed they found burned fluid. I have since investigated this transmission problem online and have found that there are still hundreds of thousands of Acuras and hondas with transmission problems like this and worse that are still on our highways. Acura knew the transmissions in these 1999-2003 cars were flawed from the time they left the factory, and Acura has paid for some repairs outside of the extended warranty. I have been told by the Honda mechanic that the problem will only get worse. Acura USA doesn't want to discuss the problem with customers outside the extended warranty anymore, however I can assure you this is a safety issue especially in city traffic. These cars are a real safety problem.

11 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2001 Acura TL

Failure Date: 08/22/2011

The transmission in my car is slipping at 2nd gear, as a result of which the rpm goes high but it doesn't match the speed of the road. The transmission as per the recall was fixed in the year 2004 , but the problem arose again and its hard for me to drive. The estimated cost of the transmission is 5k as per the dealer & the same has been reported to the Acura customer care department but I haven't heard anything from their side. I would be highly gratified to see a positive response from your side.

12 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2003 Acura TL

Failure Date: 11/06/2010

Definite problem with transmission slipping. Clutch doesn't engage sometimes. Trying to accelerate from a complete stop and the car won't move. Service engine light came on, d5 light has started blinking and the tcs light is coming on intermittently now. Took it to an Acura dealership yesterday and they said the transmission is bad and definitely needs to be replaced. I bought the car used and it had a slight miss in it but I didn't realize it was the transmission until the last few days when it started slipping so back and not even engaging. Then started looking online for similar problems and this particular year and model of car, there are hundreds, maybe thousands of people with the same problem. I called Acura and they don't plan to replace the transmissions because they don't see it as a safety hazard, but it clearly is if you read the reports of other people that have had very bad experiences, some traveling at high speeds and the car is out of control. A transmission on a vehicle should never go bad this soon. Acura definitely needs to be held responsible for this as it is clearly a defect in the transmission and people (like me) don't have $3,000 - $4,000 to replace the transmission. I just bought the car 3 months ago from a used car dealership who only offered a 30 day warranty and they aren't willing to pay for it either.

13 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2003 Acura TL

Failure Date: 10/25/2010

My transmission began slipping when shifting between 2nd and 3rd gear. I took it to a mechanic who told me about a "silent warranty" that Acura had on '03 Tl models that was extended 7 yrs or 100k miles. Whew! I'm in luck, I thought, I'm in the 7th year and I have less than 100k miles! I took it to Acura who said that my VIN number wasn't covered under the warranty. I don't understand how my VIN number wasn't covered when Acura admitted there was a problem with this particular model. Acura said they'd pay for half of my transmission as goodwill, but we'd be out of pocket $1750!!! unacceptable as far as I'm concerned. The more I've looked into this issue the more I realize how many people are out there who have this same model year and have the same exact problems. The transmission should be replaced free of charge since Acura admits fault with the model. I now have a luxury Honda paperweight sitting in my driveway. Can't sell it, can't trade it in and refuse to pay the money to get it fixed. Bad form Acura, bad form!! I won't be buying anymore Acura or Honda products that's for sure.

14 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2000 Acura TL

Failure Date: 08/10/2010

There was a recall on transmissions for my 2000 Acura Tl. In 2005 I had 86,000 miles on it and Honda replaced my transmission with a brand new one due to recall. Five years later I have 178,000 miles (92,000 on transmission) and I am in need of another transmission. My transmission is showing the exact same problems as it did five year earlier. Second gear slipping and discoloration. This time Honda/Acura will not replace or even help pay for a replacement which was also faulty. I also spoke to another person who had to put three transmissions in her 2000 Honda accord. It is unacceptable for a company to replace a defect with another defected piece and not stand behind the replacement that was supposed to be fixed.

15 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2010 Acura TL

Failure Date: 04/04/2010

Transmission slipping in traffic with multiple close calls to accidents from behind. I am original owner and have kept perfect maintenance of auto. Transmission is failing on every shift between 1st 2nd 3rd gears when warm. Safety issue is when people from behind think I am accelerating yet I am stalled. The fix is $4,000+. This is a patterned problem with all 2002 2003 Acura Tls. Old part can be made available if necessary for NHTSA.

16 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2002 Acura TL

Failure Date: 03/10/2010

I am the first owner of this car (from 3. 5 miles on the odo) and my 2002 Acura Tl-s has the original defective transmission (according to Acura service department) and started slipping at 75,000 miles about 4 years ago. The Acura service department tested the car during an airbag recall at that time and was not able to replicate the problem even though it was clear to me that the transmission was slipping slightly between 2nd and 3rd gear. Now, 4 years later and at 166,500 miles, the transmission is slipping more noticeably and more frequently (once in about every 3 times). Acura carland of duluth, GA had me take off work early and drive one hour to see them and check out what's going on. Once I drove across town in severe rain and brought it in, they dismissed me within 5 minutes without even testing or driving my car because "it had too many miles. " they could have easily told me that over the phone. I commute to work 120 miles roundtrip each day and I felt I didn't get the time and respect that I deserve. I am concerned about my safety because this is my only car and they didn't even tell me if I should replace this right away or if I have enough time to save up for this $4000 repair of a transmission that several Acura service and sales departments have told me had flawed design and parts which were somewhat modified in future transmissions which I feel I am either entitled to even if I have to bear some portion but not all of the cost.

17 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2002 Acura TL

Failure Date: 02/10/2010

Transmission started slipping between 2 and 3 gear contacted Acura dealer they told me that they can't help me because my car was out of warranty and I have to pay full price to get fixed. Really unhappy with Acura. Always was a Acura person until now when I bought Acura Tl 2002 one year ago. Have 125000 on it and never had any idea that transmission will go out. I was reading and notice even after dealer changing transmission they still go out.

19 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2003 Acura TL

Failure Date: 02/01/2010

I purchased a 2003 Acura Tl type s 2 years ago with 99,000 miles on it. Last week the transmission was slipping from 2nd to 3rd gear and wouldn't go into 3rd gear. That problem still persists and has gotten worse. The car now has 139,000 miles on it, I put 40,000 miles on it the last 2 years. I called Acura to see if they would stand behind their product but they said since the car is out of warranty they cant do anything. I took out a loan to buy this car and I still owe on it. I don't know if I will ever buy another Acura because of this experience.

20 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2003 Acura TL

Failure Date: 01/20/2010

Faulty transmission in our 2003 Acura 3. 2 Tl. We purchased this vehicle new. At around 80,000 miles it started to shudder when accelerating between 20 and 30 mph. We didn't think much of it. We now know that it was the transmission. Acura extended the warranty from 50,000 miles to 100,000 for this reason, but we were never notified. Now the car has 112,000 miles and this week the transmission started slipping between 2nd and 3rd gear, and now between 1st and 2nd there is a bang and a lurch. Currently it is far too dangerous to drive the car. We took it to a transmission specialist who diagnosed the car and researched the problem. He said that Acura has a recall for this exact issue and our car should be covered. We met with the local Acura dealership and they say our car isn't in the "batch" of VIN's covered in the recall. They further say that since we don't have a maintenance record showing that we have serviced the transmission every 30,000 miles, we have lost our chance of them working with us at all. Our manual clearly states to do the first transmission service at 120,000 miles. We have records for having done all other routine maintenance, but never did anything about the transmission, because their information says not to. Not once has anyone from Acura ever informed us that contrary to what our manual says, we should service the transmission every 30,000 miles. There was a recall on a part of the transmission that they did replace when the car had 50,000 miles, and Acura says that is also a reason they don't have to help us today.

21 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2003 Acura TL

Failure Date: 10/12/2009

The contact owns a 2003 Acura Tl. While driving 40 mph the vehicle down-shifted without any prior warnings. The vehicle was taken to a local repair facility, and a mechanic concluded that the gears in the transmission were slipping. The vehicle was towed to a dealer. The technician advised him that before repairs could be performed he would have to pay an $140. 00 diagnostic fee. No repairs were made. The technician concluded that he would call the manufacturer to determine what recourse they would provide. The failure mileage was 63,300. Updated 11/06/09. The ball joints were replaced. 25 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2001 Acura TL

Failure Date: 06/15/2009

Transmission started to slip at first, it slip after I reverse out of my drive way and then when I put it in drive that's when it slips. Thought it was nothing until the transmission started to leak. I took it to a shop to get it look at and they said that it needs to replace. Also one thing is that I'm the second owner and never received any recalls notice. So right now I don't know if I should take it to the dealership to get it replace because of the recall.

2004 Acura 3. 2tl- transmission slipped while I was driving the car on the highway.

27 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2003 Acura TL

Failure Date: 03/13/2009

While driving the transmission slipped almost into neutral and has progressed to get worse causing the vehicle to run for a few moments and then not move at all until it sits for 20-30 minutes. I have contacted Acura and my vehicle has had the recall done so I contacted my local dealership to see if there was any kind of warranty on the recall and was told no. This vehicle has less then 70,000 miles on it and has had all maintenance maintained on it. Upon researching the problem I'm apparently not the only owner who has had this problem and someone is going to get seriously injured or possibly loose their life if the manufacture does not fix these problems. My first encounter I was exchanging from one major highway to another and because my car accelerated and then stopped if I wouldn't have gone off onto the shoulder, who knows where I would be today.

29 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2003 Acura TL

Failure Date: 02/04/2009

I bought a certified pre owned 2003 Tl type s in 2006, was never notified by the dealership that the car was on a recall list of any sort. On 2. 04. 09 I left a stoplight accelerated to 40mph, transmission slipped, car dropped to 1st gear forcing me to pull over, engine emission light came on, vsa light came on. After stopping the car, the vsa warning cleared. Delivered the vehicle to the dealership the next day. Dealership ran diagnostics, received 2 transmission codes and stated the transmission must be placed at a cost of $3700. Dealership called corporate and the stated corporate would apply a $1200 credit on this vehicle. Dealership just inflated the price of a transmission replacement to cover costs, sounds like collusion to me. Interestingly aamco charges $2300 to replace the whole transmission. Called corporate again to file a complaint, no resolution, awaiting a return call. Did an internet search found multiple complaints of the same nature on this vehicle. Honda clearly knows this is a problem as they promptly offered a credit. Car remains at dealership.

30 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2003 Acura TL

Failure Date: 11/22/2008

The contact owns a 2003 Acura 3. 2tl. The contact stated that the transmission failed at 91,000 miles and needed to be replaced. On December 24, 2004, the contact received a recall notice for NHTSA campaign id number 04v176000 (power train:automatic transmission), Honda recall number 222110. The failure has recurred and the transmission needs to be replaced at the cost of $1,800, which is half of the repair cost at Honda american. The vehicle was towed 100 miles away and she was informed to have the vehicle towed back to a local dealer for repair. 33 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2001 Acura TL

Failure Date: 05/28/2008

In March 2007 I purchased a 2001 Acura 3. 2tl, after a couple of months I noticed the transmission was slipping, I took the vehicle to a local Acura dealer to find that the transmission needed to be replaced. After doing some investigating I found Acura had recalls on the transmissions, mine was considered out of warranty because the miles exceeded the recall. (this occured in may 2007) in may of 2008 my transmission went completely, during this time frame the transmission would slip, down shift etc which could have caused an accident or even death with my family and me. I contacted Acura hq and was given a case manager, who asked me to take the car back to the dealer repair shop, they would inspect it and contact me to see if they would possibly replace it (as a goodwill gesture)I was also told that I would never had received any notice of the recall because I was not the original owner, therefore since a repair was never done I feel that they should honor the recall, do the right thing and repair it. I received a phone call from the dealer stating Acura would only cover 25%, I was told by the repair shop that the transmission was so far gone that they couldn't even tear it down to do an inspection of the gears. At this point and time I have had to pay for a car rental for one month, may have to put out at least $2500 for a repair and I am not a happy customer. To me a recall is a recall and I feel Acura hq would want to keep satisfied customers. I have owned both a Honda and Acura prior to this and had approximately 250,000 miles on my other Acura. I was told by Acura hq, that if 2nd and 3rd gear were damaged they would replace the transmission, I faxed my paperwork from may 2007 which certainly stated this and am now told that this will not occur. What are my next steps to have Acura shoulder the full responsibility.

34 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2002 Acura TL

Failure Date: 04/11/2008

The contact owns a 2002 Acura 3. 2tl. A few days prior to the failure date, the vehicle's transmission began to slip. On April 11, 2008, the contact's wife attempted to accelerate from a stop and the vehicle began to buck violently. The check engine light illuminated as well. The vehicle was pulled over and the vehicle was towed to a local shop. A diagnostic was performed and the failure was identified as the transmission. The vehicle has not been repaired. The failure and current mileages were approximately 132,000.

35 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2001 Acura TL

Failure Date: 01/03/2008

On January 24, 2008 we sent a letter to richard colliver, executive vice president, auto sales at Acura in response to a questionnaire. We bought a used Acura 2001 3. 2tl in November of 2005. It had a "reconstructed title". In oregon this means there was no frame damage. The car had about 50,000 miles. I have put over 30,000 miles on the 3. 2 Tl since we bought it and had no problems until the transmission started slipping. After visiting with my mechanic and the local Acura service department regarding the transmission we discovered there had been a recall on the transmission and was told this was done in January of 2005. At some point, Acura also extended the warranty on the transmission because of an internal problem with the transmission that caused it to slip after it warmed up. I feel we have been left in the lurch with a transmission Acura knows is faulty. The car was in an accident more than two years ago, before we bought it, and you are telling us the accident voids the warranty. If the accident caused the transmission problem I think it would have shown up a long time ago. I don?t think body work on a car ? no matter how extensive ? would necessarily add up to transmission failure. It seems to me to be an excuse for Acura to push aside a problem they know is their responsibility. I have never received any response from mr. Colliver. The man who did call and give us the run around again about the reconstructed title when faced with our logic then changed his tune and said the service department only said the transmission was slipping they did not say anything about it clunking. It does clunk into gear after it slips but evidently if the Acura service did not designate that on the invoice they won't consider it. However, I believe if they had designated that very thing, there would have been another excuse.
